Our final article on Group C runs the rule over the first team to qualify for this year’s tournament, Japan. Alberto Zaccheroni’s men get their campaign underway with a showdown against Ivory Coast on Sunday June 15, then take on Greece four days later at 11pm before a final encounter with Colombia on Tuesday June 24 at 9pm:

Road to Qualification

Japan’s form during their first qualifying group was far from impressive. Drawn in a four-team group along with North Korea, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, they finished second to the latter after winning three and drawing one of their six fixtures. Their displays picked up significantly thereafter, though. Up against Australia, Jordan, Oman and Iraq, they finished at the summit, winning five and drawing a couple of their eight fixtures. Zaccheroni’s side found the net on 16 occasions, conceding just five times and registering four clean sheets.

Most Starts Eiji Kawashima, Yasuhito Endo (8), Shinji Ozazaki, Yasuyuki Konno, Yuto Nagatomo, Makoto Hasebe, Ryoichi Maeda (7), Maya Yoshida, Keisuke Honda, Shinji Kagawa (6)

Most Goals Keisuke Honda (5),Shinji Ozazaki, Ryoichi Maeda (3), Shinji Kagawa, Yuzo Kurihara (2)

The Key Targets

Japan will be looking to improve upon their record in last year’s Confederations Cup in Brazil, where the tasted defeat in all three of their games against the hosts, Italy (unluckily losing 4-3) and Mexico. Since then, they’ve won the East Asian Cup and played a further 12 friendlies – a 2-2 draw with Holland and 3-2 win over Belgium in November highlights their capabilities and, whilst a 4-2 triumph over New Zealand also underlined their ongoing problems at the back, they’ll be hoping yesterday’s 1-0 win over Cyprus is an indication they are picking up in resilience.

As the stats above show, Zaccheroni’s side – set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation – is a relatively settled one, with 10 players starting six or more of the second qualifying group. In defence, attacking full-backs Yuto Nagatomo and Atsuto Uchida are the likeliest source of returns. The former, in particular, excelled last season, chipping in with five goals and six assists for Inter Milan and is available for just 4.7 in in FantasyiTeam, whilst Uchida (at 5.0) has recovered from injury after playing 17 of Schalke’s 34 league games and scored the winner against the Cypriots yesterday. Centre-backs Yasuyuki Konno and Maya Yoshida (4.8 and 4.7 in FantasyiTeam) are equally as nailed-on but offer less in terms of attacking potential.

In the double-pivot, Yasuhito Endo and Makoto Hasebe are the preferred pairing, though the latter featured as a second-half sub yesterday after recovering from injury – Toshihiro Aoyama or Hotaru Yamaguchi also offer options in the defensive midfield positions.

Fantasy managers will be far more drawn to their attacking midfield options, though. Despite the fact that Keisuke Honda and United’s Shinji Kagawa have struggled for game time at their respective clubs, they both remain key men in Zaccheroni’s system, with the Milan man utilised in “the hole” behind a lone striker. Honda notched five times during the qualifiers and looked to be number one for spot-kicks, though Kagawa scored a penalty in a recent friendly win over New Zealand whilst Honda was on the pitch. Coming in at 5.9 and 5.7 respectively in FantasyiTeam, they look likely to pick up most of the Fantasy interest from those willing to invest in Zaccheroni’s squad.

The Long Shots

Shinji Ozazaki is nailed-on down the right of the 4-2-3-1 and played every match of the qualifiers. Classified as a forward in FantasyiTeam, and priced at 6.9, he’s likely to be overlooked due to the cheaper options afforded by Honda and Kagawa, though with three goals to his name during qualifying, he’s more than capable of producing.

Uncertainty surrounds the lone forward role, however. Ryoichi Maeda started all but one of the qualifiers but failed to make the 23-man squad – it seems likely that one of Yoichiro Kakitani or Yuya Osako (5.9 and 5.8 in FantasyiTeam) will lead the line instead, judging by recent friendlies. Kakitani has now started four of the last six, producing a goal and assist against Belgium, whilst Osako has featured in the first XI in two of the last six, delivering a goal and assist in the draw with Holland.

Here are a few choice quotes from Redknapp on Remy, Rio Ferdinand & Lampard:

"Loic has done well at Newcastle," he said. "It would be difficult to get him back here. I think he's looking to play Champions League next year somewhere.

"He's had a great season at Newcastle - he's certainly worth much more than we paid for him when we brought him here."

"Again, I love Rio, I signed them both as 15-year-olds but the chances of getting them to QPR are very slim."

& news on Chelsea buying a new LB:

Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of Atletico Madrid left-back Filipe Luis and are ready to meet the Brazilian's €24 million (£19.4m) buy-out clause. The defender is keen to move to Stamford Bridge, with the Blues prepared to double his wages.

I'd be doubtful on the merits of any of the Atletico defenders tbh. The reason they were so good last season was the system they played was ultra defensive with every forward and midfield player working their nads off to close down the opposition. I am sure the likes of this guy, godin, the LB Chelsea were linked with above and Courtois are all good players but I think they might be overpriced due to their excellent defensive record last season.

Manchester United have made a significant move to sign Atletico Madrid defender Miranda, and are on the verge of offering €30 million (£24m) for the Brazilian centre-back, a fee which would meet his buy-out clause.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    The Pochettino effect.

Spurs have notoriously been a tricky team for us Fantasy managers. Prone to swapping managers quickly as well as rotating players thanks to Europa League commitments many a Fantasy manager has found themselves left with a non playing Spurs player or misfiring striker in their team.

Can Pochettino turn it around? What players can he realistically bring in? Which current Spurs players do you think will fit in with his management style? Are Adebayor and Eriksen Pochettino players?

Yeah I hope so, I think he could be a real asset to a team where he gets to play as a proper no10 but I am doubtful that he will fit in with what Pochetino wants.

I must say it shows the class of him that he was able to adapt to the higher tempo and quality of the EPL as a lot of players from other leagues never seem to manage. It helped that he was young and willing to put in the graft to learn imo

He won't last two seasons. Spurts won't make top four either. A number of Soton games he didn't go for the win that was there for the taking. His players seemed shot-shy too often, relying on a Lallana Brazilain-esque move to score...

It will turn out another bad move for a settled manager that had it all at a slightly lower club. Think Big Sam going to Toon from Bolton, and of course Moyes most recently...

But the best thing about this could actually be to keep Sterling nailed on at Liverpool.

If anyone happens to be playing the telegraph game, Okazaki is classed as a midfielder and comes in very cheap. Also, he was top scorer in Asian qualifying with 8 goals, not 3, when taking both rounds into account (Honda didn't play in any of the earlier matches and got all 5 of his in the last round).

I know Athletico had a great season but people buying their players for upwards of thirty million is madness. They did so well because they were part of a drilled system that pressed and harried and played direct .. They're not world class players who can fit into any team seamlessly and make a huge difference with their skill alone.

This is just what regularly happens with teams like this. You see, there are these crazy clubs who buy the best players of smaller clubs of the season X. Then after season X+1, they think those best players who now, all brought to smaller roles in the bigger clubs, no longer are the best, and they buy again the best players of the smaller clubs from that season. And so on. Always a significant number of biggest clubs ends up paying heavily for players worse than what they already have, and then they wonder why they won't perform. That's how it goes.

Courtois is obviously an extraordinarily great GK, though. He may well end up being one of the best of all time.

And meanwhile your suggested Belgium has conceded in 6 last matches. And even if you take all matches from 2013-2014, it's only 4 cs in 13 matches, and 4 matches in which they've conceded more than 1 goal.

They had an impressive record throughout the qualifiers, though, but the recent form of their defence isn't that good and usually good preparation to a tournament leads to good performances. As first timers, expect them to make silly mistakes throughout the tournament.

I might start a fight with you just for entertainments sake.
I went to Australia a few years ago and the officers asked me if I had a criminal record to which I replied "Do you still need one of those to get!" 😆

      Definitely shouldn't.

And couldn't either, as only one of the clubs can use money on players at the moment.

You'll probably only get a couple of decent seasons out of Dani Alves before he filters out, he's 31, surprisingly. Whereas Marquinhos is up and coming, only 20 years old and a typical Barcelona centre-back, fast, technically brilliant yet not very physical(or not physical enough).

Exactly. One starts to be past it, and has never excelled defensively, one is one of the most promising defenders of his generation, already doing it on the top level despite being just some 20-year-old.

Not at all. Rather they are too late reacting to the problems they've had in defence for a couple of seasons now. They desperately need to renew that defence now as they failed to do that before despite clear signs of decay being there for all to read.

Plus Montoya is a natural replacement for Alves, he's just signed a new deal till 2018 so I expect him to become number one right-back next season.

Alba-Pique-Marquinhos-Montoya weaker than Alba-Pique-Masherano-Alves. I think Marquinhos is a great signing but i think this deal is not so good for Barça.

Yeah. Either that, or then his new contract extension makes no sense. Montoya is 23 now, it is the time for him to be either a first team player or leave Barcelona.

alves has built a career largely on incredibly intensity of running, age therefore is an issue, or at least will be.
guess value largely depends on how much a team needs you. barcelona are more desperate for a centre back, whilst i think montoya and adriano make less dodgy replacements than mascherano and bartra
