World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Italy

The third team in our assessment of Group D is Italy. Having analysed Costa Rica and England, we now take a look at the prospects of Cesare Prandelli’s side – the Azzurri open their campaign against England on Saturday June 14 at 11pm before taking on underdogs Costa Rica six days later at 5pm and finish the group stages with a potentially crucial clash against Uruguay on Tuesday June 24 at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

The Italians clinched their progress after topping a six-team group that also included Denmark, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Armenia and Malta. Prandelli’s troops won six of their 10 matches and scored 19 goals (netting two or more on eight occasions), though they seemed to struggle defensively – conceding nine goals, they managed just four clean sheets over the course of their campaign.

Most Starts Andrea Pirlo (9), Gianluigi Buffon, Leonardo Bonucci (8), Claudio Marchisio, Riccardo Montolivo (7), Daniel De Rossi, Pablo Osvaldo, Andrea Barzagli (6)

Most Goals Mario Balotelli (5), Pablo Osvaldo (4), Andrea Pirlo, Daniel De Rossi (2)

Most Assists Andrea Pirlo (4), Antonio Candreva, Claudio Marchisio (2)

The Key Targets

Since clinching qualification, Italy have failed to win any of their three friendlies, drawing with Germany and Nigeria before tasting defeat at the hands of Spain. Prandelli is set to announce his final 23-man squad after a weekend friendly with Republic of Ireland, with a number of Juventus- title-winning side key to his plans.

At the back, Gianluigi Buffon – available for 6.2 in FantasyiTeam – is nailed-on between the posts, whilst Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci are the likely central defensive pairing, allowing Milan pairing Ignazio Abate and Mattia De Sciglio the full-back berths in a four-man backline. Coming in at in 5.8 and 5.7 respectively in FantasyiTeam, the latter two are slightly cheaper than the centre-halves; Chiellini mirrors Buffon’s 6.2 price tag, whilst Bonucci sets you back 5.9.

Prandelli tends to favour a 4-3-1-2 formation but has also admitted he is considering a 4-3-3 or 3-5-2 set-up as an alternative – the latter system culd allow another Juventus defender, Andrea Barzagli, to slot in alongside Chiellini and Bonucci, with Abate and De Sciglio utilised as wing-backs in a five-man midfield.

Regardless of formation Andrea Pirlo remains vital to Italy’s approach. The veteran’s set-piece delivery and distribution from deep will surely earn him plenty of investment, as evidenced by his four assists during the qualifiers – he may be 35 years old but, at 6.6 in FantasyiTeam, Pirlo’s ability to keep cool under pressure and hold onto the ball could be vital in the energy-sapping conditions. Daniel De Rossi’s (6.2 in FantasyiTeam) versatility could be key to Prandelli’s tactics, too. The Roma midfielder will provide the energy in the centre of the park but also offers an option at centre-half if the Italy boss changes his approach mid-match and turns to a back-three.

Elsewhere in the centre of the park, Claudio Marchisio and Riccardo Montolivo are likely starters, with PSG pair Thiago Motta and Marco Verratti consigned to bench-warming duties. In a 4-3-1-2, Montolivo should tuck in behind a front two and could be one to consider for those eyeing up alternatives to Pirlo – he comes in at 5.8 in FantasyiTeam compared to Marchisio’s 5.9.

Up top, Mario Balotelli is the main man. Despite featuring just five times in qualification, the AC Milan start still managed to net five times and is the one forward we can rely on to make Prandelli’s teamsheet – he also remains ahead of Pirlo in the spot-kicks pecking order, despite losing his 100% penalty conversion record last season. Priced at 9.0 in FantasyiTeam, Balotelli isn’t cheap but looks the man most likely to notch doe Prandelli’s outfit.

The Long Shots

Coming in at 5.3 in FantasyiTeam,Lazio’s Antonio Candreva is far from certain to start but he arrives in arguably the best form of any Italian midfielder. Fielded on the right of a front three for his club, he produced 12 goals and six assists in the 2013/14 Serie A campaign and is perhaps best-suited to a 4-3-3 system, though could also offer an option in “the hole” at Montolivo’s expense.

If he can prove his fitness, Prandelli will be desperate to include Guiseppe Rossi in the squad. Sidelined by a knee injury for four months, he’s back in training with the national squad and would be an ideal partner for Balotelli up top should the Azzurri continue with a two-man frontline, though a potential absence would boost Antonio Cassano’s chances of making the starting XI. Those two will set you back 8.8 and 8.4 respectively in FantasyiTeam.

Yeah I agree 100%, they need quality more than quantity. If they can attract some real quality with the CL as a carrot they may be able to qualify for it again next season. They need to really capitalise on the CL carrot this window imo.

Interesting player, I could see spurs/utd going for him as he can play right across the forward line.

He always reminds me of Van Der Vaart when I see him playing and I could see him fitting right in with LVG style of play.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Got a really interesting community article coming out later today about FPL bonus points. Its a really indepth look at what players have to do to get bonus - aside from the obvious such as clean sheets and goals.

In the meantime I thought I'd start a discussion on FPL bonus points. Are they still valid? Or would you prefer they were scrapped and replaced with a UFPL scoring system that has in built bonus for players who do something extra (eg def mids can do well). Or are you happy with the BPS system? Or would you like to see a return to the randomness of the man in the stand (Barry Ferguson's dad)?

I like the new bonus system but I think there should be a minimum threshold for bonus points to be earned. I think it is ridiculous that in a dour 0-0 where no defender has to do much that 4 players can end up with 3 bonus points having only hit 7/8 bps whereas in a game where a defender has to do a lot of defending to keep a clean sheet in a 3-0 win the goal scorers get all the bonus and the defenders can often get none.

I also think creative players should be rewarded more for chances created and assists. If a goal scorer gets 8bps for a goal then a midfielder should get 5 for an assist (as this would mean a goal and assist for a mid or a forward would = 11bps each since the mids only get 6bps for a goal). The same should go for an assist for a defender, it should be more than the forwards as they only get 4bps for a goal and have less chance of scoring or assisting. All round I think the assister's are not getting enough reward.

In short I think the UFPL system sounds better than the FPL one (although I have not played it so not sure how it works in practice) as long as the creative mids get more for their work. The waiting for bonus points every evening does add that extra bit of excitement though.....

If FPL can somehow tweak the system so that def and creative mids get more (currently there is a huge percentage of players that are just a no go zone) or so that we avoid that terrible Palace game where half the players got bonus then I'm keen on keeping bonus.

I think after a season of UFPL though more people may look at the two and think, hang on...I think I prefer UFPL, as you have.

Yeah I'd agree with that. As long as we can make more players worth owning and create more variety I'm all for it.

Min threshold and more for creative players would go a long way to this imo. I'm Not sure if there is a need to bring the def mids into it as they are not very exciting to have in your fpl team while everyone loves to see the dribbling creative players but due to the bonus system there is not much point having players who are likely to get dispossessed or give the ball away trying a difficult pass to set up a goal.

THe UFPL score system suites players like Mata, Silva etc, especially if they get a point per key pass(which they should). Passing completion should also be accounted for imo.

Yeah this looks like a complete upheaval of the current bonus system again and tbh I think the change in the bonus system really effected the experienced players more than the noobs so another change next year is something I could do without tbh.

Agree with all of this..^..The current system should hav a threshold for performance. Reach a paticular threshold 1bp..the next 2 bps..then 3 bps...if that means six or seven getting 3 bps in a good game then brill...and no bps in a 0-0 bore fest then so be it.
Having read this thread I'm still wondering why the makers of the game would possibly run two scoring systems for UFPL and FPL...I think it possible we may be in for a surprise this season.

          True. I was just joking.

I guess something "in the middle" needs to be found. If the Maccy D rules for example stay the same for the WC it will be one massive abortion. Thank God FPL have their heads screwed on correct and will surely not go down that path...

What if there was a system where you were rewarded for a certain amount of Baps?

As in, if a player reached 10 bps, he'd get a point, 13 bps, he gets 2 points, 16+ bps and he gets 3 points.

This would mean that games with a lot of outstanding performers would have a lot rewarded, whereas boring 0-0s between say, Burnley and Palace, would have few rewards, unless defenders actually warranted it.

(Those examples are purely just random examples for the record.)

but if a play say scores the winning goal or is a rock at the back the whole game and gets 9 bps, then he would get zero....a nice idea but like with everything there is a loop hole 🙁

I think it is a good idea but as per AR the threshold for gaining the bonus would have to be different for each position as it is almost impossible for a defender to get 16bps.

Either the thresholds would have to be different or more bps awarded for different actions.

Yep, those numbers were purely for example sakes, I'd lean towards rewarding more actions, but it would take a lot of tweaking and its a risky process.

They should keep baps, I don't want it getting similar to UFPL otherwise it's pointless playing both.

        Agree with this.

Subjective baps are the best option IMO and the scoring should stay separate in FPL and UFPL.

I think they need to remain distinctive from UFPL. I don't mind the extent to which certain players are a no go zone - defensive mids are not fantasy footballers, I don't see an issue with that. Players who assist the assister don't need to be rewarded, that's just not how the game works.

Agree that a higher theshold to prevent the stupidity following 0-0s would be ideal, but in general I think the system has improved - being able to tell at the end of a game who has got them is much preferable to man in the stand - and doesn't need too much tinkering.

      About bloody time Jonty! 😉

I also like the thresholds idea. A more simple ( if arbitrary) solution to the multiple bonus problem would be to reduce the maximum bonus awarded from 3 to 2 if two or more players are tied, cascading down to the lower point levels too.
As for changes to the system. Id like to see a goal be worth 6BPS for all players but make it harder to loose points for things like loss of possession, or perhaps add extra points for things like dribbles and touches in the box. That way strikers wouldn't loose out attacking mids would actually gain. Maybe more BPS for saves too for keepers

Now if only there was some way of breaking down how BPS scores add up....

Anything that brings in variety for capt choices is to be welcomed too and more bonus for attacking mids would defo make people think twice about captaining the star forward or an attacking midfielder.

The old bonus system seemed to favour attacking mids over forwards so everyone captained the big mids so trying to find a balance where you can be rewarded equally is the tough thing.

As baines says above Def mids are not what fantasy football is about and nobody wants a situation where everyone is captaining defenders either so the same system with a min threshold and a bit more bps for attacking mids would be close to perfect.

I used to be very strongly against the multiple baps awarded to defenders in boring 0-0 draws. But looking at it another way, defenders used to be under-rewarded, so this could be considered as a way of redressing the balance. Last season's changes did have the effect of making defenders more valuable and midfielders less valuable than they used to be, and this was probably a good thing on the whole.

It would be nice to see creative midfielders and assist-the-assist experts better rewarded though.

...Also, I don't think players should be penalised for shots that hit the post or crossbar, only for shots that go wide or high (especially if they are very wide or very high).

And does a cross-cum-shot that isn't quite on target count as a missed shot or just as an attempted pass?

Soak it overnight in milk, then cook on a low heat for as long as you can. While it is cooking add some honey and some raisins.

Once it is cooked take the saucepan off the heat and empty the contents into a bin, take suasages and rashers from the fridge and whack them in a frying pan, butter some bread and make a nice cup of tea. Job done 🙂

Mine only goes wrong when I rush it.

I use the Sainsbury's oats (blue bag) with roughly twice the volume of milk.

Heat in a pan, stirring occasionally, until it shows the first signs of starting to simmer.

Turn the heat down and simmer gently for 3-4 minutes, still stirring occasionally. If it's sticking to the bottom try to scrape this off with your stirring spoon before it burns (and turn the heat down some more).

Take it off the heat and leave for 2-3 minutes before serving.

Personally not convinced that Bonucci will start ahead of Barzagli/Paletta and unsure about Motta having a bench role. I guess it just depends on the formation and opposition.

Buffon/Chiellini, Pirlo and Balotelli the only ones I'd have out of Italy anyway, maybe Rossi/Immobile/Destro if they nailed down a spot and came in quite cheap.

Barzagli has been injured for a while so they may go for Bonucci. But I suppose you could argue Barzagli is more fresh for the tournament of for someone his age.

Yeah, Thiago Motta should definitely be starting over Montolivo in terms of form from this season...

How I expect them to lineup:

      Buffon
      Abate Bonucci Chiellini De Sciglio
      De Rossi Pirlo Motta
      Marchisio
Balotelli Rossi (Destro if Rossi not deemed fit)

Seems to suggest Marchisio will play a deeper role with Candreva/Montolivo in the hole so to speak. No place for Motta.

Montolivo/Candreva over Marchisio as the trequartista IMO. Need some creativity other than Pirlo.

Could even see De Sciglio RB, Chiellini LB and 2 of Bonucci/Barzagli/Paletta at CB.

If they play Spain they may change to 3-5-2. There's so much at Prandelli's disposal...

Yeah the 3-5-2 works very well against the Spaniards as the midfield is packed and they don't really use width except from their full-backs.

Now, is this paving the way for Vorm or Tremmel to leave?

Liverpool have been backed into evens to sign Southampton striker Rickie Lambert this summer following a string of bets this morning. The England forward is 16/1to follow former manager Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham and 10/1to join West Ham.

would be shocked if this happened

Seems perfect to me, adds something different, has experience, at the age where needs to be rotated and liverpool will need to rotate so it isnt going to be an issue for him/no sulking. Only issue is you can see him playing the easier games and suarez be rested for those.

The thing is, with iving in he area I read the local paper, all the players are tied to long contracts, and the club is owned by a billionaire family. They don't need to sell for financial reasons.

It's just the national press small club syndrome coming through. Like always being last on MOTD. And Hansen saying what a shame the team might break up now etc. Who says this?
