With less than a fortnight to go before the big kick-off, Fantasy managers and our community writers and posters are continuing their mission in search of quality budget options and prosperous heavy-hitters, whilst sifting the crop of new top-flight talent.

We look back to soak up the highlights of the week’s community submissions and drop in on the key Hot Topics to contemplate Southampton’s exodus, the potential starting XIs and the case to select a certain Manchester City full-back.

The Community Articles

The community section is simmering nicely as we near that August 16 deadline, with rotations and predicted teamsheets earning some keen interest over the past week.

ForzaInter was the latest community writer to tackle the issue of defensive rotation, putting forward a compelling new angle. His strategy is to focus on heavy-hitting, premium defenders from top sides and supplement them with a cheap defensive pair that can drop in when tricky fixtures rear their heads.

Defence was also the focus of Bowstring The Trout’s budget balancing article in which he lays out some furtehr cheap rotation options, in addition to a handful of mid-priced stoppers.

Meanwhile, The Puntmaster returned with another of his excellent player analysis updates focusing on the new arrivals to the Premier League. This time around he presented a useful summary of the key acquisitions to this point, including links to his new player spreadsheets, which will be particularly helpful to those catching up on his series of must-read updates.

Saniul, is another community writer who has been compiling a series of illuminating spreadsheet analysi. He’s focused his attentions on the potential starting XIs, based on the latest injury, transfer and friendly fixture news and events.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some pre-season analysis or lengthy opinions and foresight to share, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

While I was away on my family holidays this week, Fantasy Football Scout’s moderators and contributors kindly stepped up to take over our daily Hot Topics, covering a range of issues from differentials, to the continuing quest for individuality as we seek to avoid the template team.

Mark posed a pair of differing posers during the week, firstly asking how many new players to the Premier League we will be considering and just how far we should go with our punts on the likes of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea’s Diego Costa?

Meanwhile, Mark also chirped up to ask whether Fantasy managers are being duped into a defensive template by the recent transfers involving the likes of Ben Davies, Dejan Lovren and Andre Wisdom.

Manchester City was a focus for moderators Spencer and Applebonkers’s Hot Topic contributions. Spencer pondered just how much the World Cup will affect the pitch time of those players involved in the latter stages of the tournament, with Sergio Aguero a particular concern.

Ironically, one of those players who could well benefit from late returning World Cup players is the much-maligned Aleks Kolorov. Applebonkers asked whether the defender, who is often referred to as ‘Lolorov’ due to his bandwagaon cameos and frustrating knack of letting us down, could be in for a sensational early start to the campaign. Applebonkers certainly volunteered some compelling statistics to back up investment in the Serbian. Personally, I think this is a blatant attempt to lure Mark into the Kolarov honey trap from the get-go.

Elsewhere, the community’s most experienced Fantasy managers such as Triggerlips and Rasping Drive, were quick to respond to moderator Athletico Timbo’s excellent Hot topic asking for the top tips for success. Efficient short-term planning and watching as many games as possible, were among Rasping Drive’s nuggets of advice. Meanwhile, in a separate Hot Topic, Triggerlips wondered, with so many unknowns in the game, whether Fantasy managers would be better off carrying out minimal planning and seeing how the early season unfolds.

Another experienced campaigner, Torres Magic, also helped out with our daily Hot Topics. His focus was on differential players and proved one of our most discussed posts of the week. Inspired by this thread, Squeaky Bum Time decided to look specifically at some of the best mid-priced differentials available in the Fantasy Premier League game.

While holidaying in Hampshire, the local news inspired my first Hot topic on my return, as I pondered the fate awaiting Southampton following the exodus of their crown jewels in July. Some of the responses demonstrated faith in their remaining players to step up and replace the likes of Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw. Among those who could be destined for a great season is young full-back Matt Targett. Be sure to check on Lucy’s thorough analysis of his prospects here.

While investing in Targett and other Southampton players could be a risk, there was a cast of more reliable sources discussed this week.

Arsenal’s rejuvenated midfielder, Aaron Ramsey, stands out in particular according to the aptly named Aaron Ramessi, who predicts another stellar season for the clinical Welsh playmaker. Elsewhere, Beavis nominated Romelu Lukaku as an asset who could offer us a decent level of assurance, while Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas is said to be another dependable points scorer, particularly before January, if Dandec’s analysis rings true.

Finally, Innsie was on hand to provide this excellent summary of all the key questions during the week, including the demise of Southampton’s squad and the conundrum surrounding Chelsea’s tempting defensive assets.

The Community Tournaments

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing is returning for the 2014/14 Fantasy Premier League season. The code to join is 52587-7172.

Xward has also set up an open FPL league, called “Naughty Filthy Punters” (3079-201991), while Narenda Wicaksono has a league (67393-21769) and a cup (67393-21807) in FPL that is open to the community.

Elsewhere, Zep has set up a dead team challenge, where teams stick with the same squad selection until the end of the season. Full details can be found here.

  3. Which Chelsea defender?
    Chris_White

Okay I see a lot of discussion and opinions on the Chelsea defense and I'd like to have my take on this dilemma...

GARY CAHILL - As I see it, Cahill is the most nailed-on in the back four as things stand. Coming off a great season and only gonna get better. Still quite young and will be future captain when JT retires imo.

JOHN TERRY - It will be interesting to see if JT keeps up his form and fitness from last season. Even if he does, I think he will get more rotated now that Ivanovic has Azpi to compete with at RB and the fact that Zouma is staying with us this year. He hasn't looked very sharp in pre-season but that could easily change come opening day. I think he will certainly play from the go, but personally I think there is a good chance he'll see more of the bench this time around.

KURT ZOUMA - Zouma will most likely get the chance to prove himself in the cup games and maybe in a few of the 'easier' league games at the Bridge. I'd still be surprised if he gets more than a few league starts with Cahill, JT as front runners.

BRANISLAV IVANOVIC VS. CESAR AZPILICUETA - The arrival of Filipe Luis will see Azpilicueta, if not from the go then at least eventually, switch to his natural habitat at RB and this will hurt Ivanovic's gametime. I am personally very interested in how this will turn out. My initial thoughts are that they will share gametime with Ivanovic getting some starts at CB.

FILIPE LUIS - As a Chelsea fan, I'm very excited to see that we finally have found a worthy left-footed replacement for Ashley Cole. Luis has already received his praise from Mourinho on the back of some fine pre-season showings, and taken into consideration how Mourinho has been looking for more offensive contribution to support Hazard I can't see Luis not being first choice here - if not from the go then at least after he has settled promptly. Azpi may start at LB, but I think Mourinho wants to fit Luis in quickly and judging by our early fixtures against promoted teams it will be a perfect time to do so if you ask me.

    CONCLUSION:

If I were to get a Chelsea defender from the go, I'd go Cahill. I also think Terry will be a certain starter in the first period of the season, but Mourinho has also stated that he shouldn't expect to play as much as last season - especially if his performances start to drop. Being the warrior he is though, I think Terry will have another great season. This spells trouble for both Ivanovic and Azpi as I see them sharing game time at RB with Azpi occasionally shifting to LB to cover for Luis. As for Kurt Zouma, he will probably get a few appearances but not given the time to shine before next season.

I personally think there's nothing wrong going with Luis from the start, but there is a chance Azpi will deputise every now and then because simply because that we have 5 defenders that all should be starters!

I agree with Luis but he has been quite average so far! Probably rustiness (have watched him in the past), but is misplacing the ball too much. Azpi will be brilliant this season, I think. Personally, I've gone Terry/Cahill so far, the extra .5 is worth it. Both more of a goal threat than the full-backs, just need to wait and see who is the most nailed on, but I agree that it is Gaz at this stage

I disagree with a lot of this

I think all 5 will be rotated...it's obvious that there's a good chance that Terry will play less than last season and he's likely to play in very tough games when Chelsea play with a deep line...of course Mourinho praised Luis...every manager praises new signings...last year Mourinho said if he had 11 Azpi's he'd win the Champions League

at any point Mourinho could drop Terry like he did with Cole...not saying it will happen...but it might

Cahill and Ivan played in the World Cup so they could be in for some early rest...Luis is new...he's likely to start the early fixtures but this isn't certain

so I say Azpi is the best chance of starting all the first 4

Terry is by far and away the most nailed on Chelsea defender in my opinion. Mourinho said "When you have a player able to perform during the whole season it’s because you believe that the next season he can do the same." He's the captain and was outstanding last season. Where are his comments regarding him having less playing time please?

Some good players in terms of points - Rooney, Mata, Yaya, Siggy. Fab worries me slightly. Sitting in the back of that midfield I just wonder whether he'll be an 'assist the assister' type of player. Lukaku good but tends to go quiet for long periods. Pelle unproven as yet. It's a side which has a few gambles, but if they pay off, you'll be flying!

Agree with above. Clyne is in my team and with those fixtures it's hard to justify B. Davies. This, and we may see a Clichy/Kolarov style rotation initially, which would hurt.

Yep, rotation seems to be the main issue, and of course it's a big deal. Wonder would anyone say Clyne if they knew Davies was also nailed on?

Thanks for all the replies. Seems to be a vast majority saying Clyne. Would prefer to go safer so leaning that way right now too.

I still think with those fixtures, it has to be Clyne. You'd be so much happier playing him first 10 GWs than Davies (well, you should hope so anyway).

Lets have a break from football. What are your guys favourite TV series ever?

Between Breaking Bad and The Wire for me. Breaking Bad just edges it for me as I found it a bit easier to watch.

Have to say the first 2 seasons of Lost is the best TV ever made though.

I'm sticking with Giroud for now. Yes he's frustrating, yes he's slow, yes he can't really seem to shoot - but by any objective analysis he's a good price whilst he's starting.

Don't want to poop on your pick but he scored the same number of goals as Dzeko in 1000 more minutes. With Dzeko almost guaranteed gametime at the start of the season surely he's the better pick.

Just got this crazy craving for Yaya, well not really crazy seeing as how he dominated the points last year, barring Suarez. Thought I'd decimate my team and see what it looks like with him.

    Krul - (Pantilimon)

    Luis - Mariappa - Cameron - (Naylor) - (Wisdom)

    Haz - Yaya - Ram - Eriksen - Siggy

    Rooney - Dzeko - (Zzzzamora)

Evening Y'all, I've been enjoying my time on this site so far despite only joining yesterday, lol, I try to comment alot but I really don't ask too many questions. My second question to ask is about Stoke City. Based on what I saw here, a good portion of people on this site has Stoke players, how do y'all feel stoke will do?. They finished 9th last season, will they improve or drop out from top 10? To add on, so far this pre season, they haven't won a game with 3 draws and 2 losses

Stoke is always pretty solid at home, they do not play the best footy but with a new manager( last year ) they are looking better. I am going with one defender and perhaps Bojan as a punt( 5.5 )

I would also rather have Sturridge but can only see Bony as a place to free up funds, and I think the difference between Costa and Sturridge is less than the difference between Bony and Austin and then upgrading defence by 1m
