Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata are amongst the goals as United get the better of Liverpool. Steven Gerrard nets the Merseysiders’ consolation in a 3-1 defeat, with Raheem Sterling once again influential in the final third. Elsewhere, David Nugent grabs his fourth strike of the summer as Leicester ease past MK Dons:

Rooney Seals Early Bragging Rights
Wayne Rooney skippered a triumphant United line-up as they earned a morale-boosting 3-1 win over rivals Liverpool in the final of the International Champions Cup final.

Rooney levelled matters with a smart left-foot finish from a Javier Hernandez cross after Steven Gerrard had earlier put a dominant Liverpool in front from the spot – the Reds’ captain profiting following a foul on the lively Raheem Sterling by Phil Jones. With Daniel Sturridge sidelined, the electric Sterling was again the major threat for Liverpool throughout but he could not prevent his side slipping to defeat as goals from Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard earned United the trophy with assists from Luke Shaw and Ashley Young.

Rooney was later named player of the tournament, having registered four goals, and now looks in pole position to take on the United armband – even upon Robin Van Persie’s return. Rooney’s pre-season form is set to seal his place in many a Fantasy lineup, as his 34% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership continues to grow. Post-match, Van Gaal had this to say on the United captaincy, hinting that Rooney would likely keep the captaincy…

“I am always looking for opportunities to give players the captain’s armband. Today Rooney played 90 minutes for the first time. Darren Fletcher had already done it two times, then he was the captain, and Tom Cleverley because he also had 90 minutes. I think you have to choose, when it is possible, the English style. That is when it is possible.”

Mata is another target who has played himself firmly into the reckoning. With 18% FPL ownership, the Spanish playmaker starts the season in fine fettle having claimed a pair of pre-season strikes and an assist playing in the “number 10” role behind twin strikers.

Both sides put out strong lineups in Miami, with United’s perhaps closest to their likely opening day teamsheet. Louis van Gaal again retained the 3-5-2, deploying Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans at the back, with Antonio Valencia and Young as wing-backs.

Valencia was an early casualty: he limped off on nine minutes with Shaw introduced on the left and Young switching to right wing-back. Post-match, Van Gaal gave us an update on the Ecuadorian and fellow injury victim, Danny Welbeck, who missed last night’s encounter…

“Valencia had feelings in his leg. I had told him before the game that you have to listen to your body. The accumulation of tiredness in this tournament is high. All the players want to play but you have to be clever and he was clever to step out. When you’re feeling something in your leg, you have to pay attention to it. His [Welbeck] reaction today was good, but it’s wise we didn’t play him.”

It remains to be seen if the pair will recover to face Swansea a week on Saturday; right now the duo seem doubtful and, with Rafael also sidelined, Shaw and Young could now be set for the wing-back roles for the visit of the Welshmen – a pleasing scenario for Shaw’s 26% FPL ownership. Equally, with Robin van Persie expected to miss the opener, Hernandez could be poised to partner Rooney in attack to offer a short-term attacking option.

As for Liverpool, they were without Jon Flanagan, who continues to struggle with a knee problem sustained on tour, forcing Brendan Rodgers to deploy Martin Kelly at right-back and Glen Johnson on the left. With new signing Dejan Lovren back on Merseyside, Rodgers paired Martin Skrtel with Mamadou Sakho at the back. Joe Allen again started alongside Gerrard in the double pivot, with Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho supporting Rickie Lambert in attack.

We could see a similar starting XI against Southampton on the opening day, although much depended on the availability of Sturridge, with Rodgers remaining optimistic that he’ll be available following a recent hamstring twinge. There’s little doubt that Raheem Sterling’s form over the summer has been the eye-catching factor on show for Rodgers’ side. Handed the freedom of a central attacking role, he could well justify his burgeoning 23% FPL ownership with early returns.

Post-match, Rodgers remained upbeat in spite of the loss and confirmed there are still “one or two to come in” as he continues to add to the Merseysiders’ first-team squad. The Reds boss also took time out to praise Sterling, after another standout display:

“I thought Sterling was outstanding, a real threat. The intensity in his game, how he presses the ball, and technically he’s very aware for a young player. At 19 years of age he’s a young talent and getting better all the time.”

Nugent Nets Again
Leicester’s busy schedule continued with a 2-0 win over MK Dons last night. In the third of four games over the period of six days, Nigel Pearson split his squad in two ahead of tonight’s clash with Rotherham and fielded new boys Marc Albrighton and Ben Hamer alongside the likes of skipper Wes Morgan and David Nugent. The latter opened the scoring to take his pre-season tally to four goals – only Stevan Jovetic and Glenn Murray (five apiece) have managed more – while James Pearson fired a superb second as the Championship winners clinched victory for the fourth time in five matches this summer. Whilst Nugent’s 5.5 FPL price tag is kind, the opening schedule is anything but. With games against Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal and United, allied with trips to Stoke and Palace in the opening six, only 2% of FPL managers have been willing to take a chance on The Foxes spot-kick taker so far.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Your justification for thinking that ... I.e. Hull have better fixtures, Snod has good strikers to assist and is nailed on. Sig has been in good pre season form and should play in an advanced midfield role so has assist potential etc.

I've never understood his hype. I remember he went something like 15 games without any returns, then he got 2 returns in a row and all of a sudden he was essential.

I would argue that, he's a rubbish captaincy option and even when he plays 3000 minutes he winds up scoring similar levels of goals and assists to players that play 1000 minutes fewer.

You can't have 7 captain options in your front 7 every week, your 4th mid or third striker just needs to keep ticking along with points

Here's my justification, Hull don't have good strikers, fixtures are good but they have Europa matches in between meaning rotation and injury, Siggy has the ability to be an 8.0 level mid so he's a bargain and finally Snodgrass is f**king shit.

Agree with Siggy. Agree about Hull and their strikers and cupgames, that still doesnt make Snodgrass a bad player 😉 Maybe (maybe) a bad pick, or a worse pick atleast..

I would love to invite people to mine as an example... But because money exchange would be done by post, people wouldn't risk

Exactly how I feel. I also have Mata & Fabregas for the early fixtures. Costa captain first 2 weeks & Rooney captain weeks 3-5. We'll smash anyone who doesn't have both imo, just due to the fact we're having £10.5 M strikers playing with our armband against promoted teams.

Just a note to people who missed it, we have a new RMT daily article for you to use to post RMTs:

Also, if you use it to post your RMT, at least give others feedback or it really won't work lol

I watched the Man United v Liverpool game last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it - here are some of my thoughts:

The 3-5-2 formation for Man U works. It works as long as the 'wing backs' can beat defenders for 90 minutes. Ashley Young gave a fantastic display of this last night.

Carrying on from the point above, Ashley Young seems to be benefiting strongly from the new formation brought in by LvG. He's fit enough to perform the 'wing back' role, has the technique to deliver the ball in to key areas and the ability to score goals. Strong FPL prospect especially at that 5.5 price tag.

Luke Shaw isn't a long way off the mark with regards to his role in the team. He has great control on the ball and gets forward. Against Liverpool he wasn't really defensively tested as Raheem Sterling was playing on the opposite wing, but week-on-week in the PL he might come up against tougher, faster wingers and he needs to be fit for that. Still my favorite United defender for FPL as long as he plays.

Darren Fletcher had a bad game last night, misplacing a lot of his passes. Over the course of pre-season he seems to be making a name for himself again, though. Still no real FPL prospect as he plays too deep.

Rooney is essential. Not much more to say! With the fixtures put before United you'd be hard pushed to see beyond Rooney scoring loads. Young and Mata could be big providers. RvP could change things, though.

United have great youth talent emerging. Tyler Blackett especially, and Jesse Lingard when he came on as a sub, looked solid and professional. An exciting future for United.

United's defense looked shakey at times. There were a some misplaced passes and mis-communications amongst the United backline making them look less than solid, which begs the question "Will LvG make new CB signings?". I think Jones, Smalling and Evans are all great players, but maybe they aren't ready yet.

Liverpool looked fairly neutered last night. Without Daniel Sturridge up front they lacked a target in the box and missed some finishing quality. Lambert was too slow on many occasions and had maybe 1 shot on goal.

Sterling and Coutinho look good. Really good! If Sturridge was playing I think they would have had a much better result. Sturridge could be the key to these 3 becoming dangerous against any team. Keep your eye on Coutinho as an FPL prospect - this could be his year.

Joe Allen was anonymous. I think I only heard his name when he was being subbed off.

Lucas is still terrible. Came on for 20 mins and still got beaten by Young as he crossed for the 3rd goal.

Liverpool's new signings looked ok. Not offered much game time last night, but they got on the ball a bit. Jordan Ibe gave Luke Shaw something to think about for a while.

Liverpool need to sign another world class striker. Open for discussion I suppose, but it felt like they were seriously lacking bite (excuse the pun) up front. They've potentially 'done a Spurs' and leaked a load of money on too many players rather than making 1 or 2 killer signings.

Hope this helps for some of those who didn't watch the game last night.

    Cheers.

    p.s. That was never a penalty! 😀

Totally agree about Allen. Didn't even notice he was playing until he was subbed.

Don't think we need another world-class striker, as then we would almost be forced to play 4-4-2, but another good mobile striker is required.

Sturridge will probably be injured enough to give him plenty of games anyway.

Yeah I know what you mean. As long as Sturridge is fit we're fine without another class striker, but that goes to your second point.
Still too many good strikers is a damn good problem to have 😉

A transformation from 4 back line to a 3 is very hard to adapt to for most CBs. I think that our guys have done good so far but it takes time. You say they are not ready? When will they be ready then? I agree we need 1-2 more CBs, Blackett could be one, Vidic should have been the other. He has been great in Inter so far, and they play a 3 5 2 formation as well, really bad decision to sell our captain!

gd stuff.......any thoughts on ander herrera?.....i watched last night and thought he was also poor......covered alot of ground and made many challenges but was unsuccessful in winning the ball most times, conceded alot of fouls and gave the ball away cheaply too often.....he did make a few nice forward passes which show he has potential.....but overall considering the huge role he has for utd this season i have been left very unconvinced that he can dominate the midfield in the premiership.

We didn't watch the same game then. Herrera was one of the best yesterday, had to cover for Fletcher who had a really bad game. Had some killer passes and showed great creativity in a maybe too deep role for him. Often went back to help the defence.

Anyone else think it would be handy to have set hot topics that appear at the top of whatever page you're on? So regardless of it being on say page 6, it would be the top comment (a 31st) on pages 7, 8, 9 etc.

These could allow people to have easy access to crucial information (like the RMT article) without it having to be reposted frequently. Could potentially extend that to allow each user to select which hot topics they want to see from the hot topic widget.

But doing that means you miss all the new comments, as you only see the stickies OR the most recent page, but never both. Across articles, yes. Sort of as a separate comments section between whatever article you're on and its comments. This would contain either the hot topics chosen by admin, or if possible let each user select say 5 from the current 10 in the hot topics widget.

i have noticed most people have 4+ not nailed on players in there teams, mostly in defence.

personally at the start of the season it is wise to have 11 players def 100% nailed.

i think people are trying to get cheap defences and are going for punts like Cameron, Bavies, Mariappa, Chambers, Bruce.....

It is an easy trap to fall into.

what is everyone else's thoughts on this?

what 3 def you going with?

Trouble is no one appears nailed on, people have been long debating which Chelsea defender will be left out of GW1.

      Same with Utd.

      Zabaleta/Sagna

Etc...spending 6mil doesn't guarantee a starting defender. What a time to be alive.

I agree. It might be ok to have one or two 90% players but the rest must certainly be 100% nailed on.

How well do you reckon United will do this season? top 4? champions? mid table?

They have only bought 2 players off the top of my head and that defence for me is not good.

Another season of frustration is likely in my opinion

Unless they invest in central defence I can see them having a few problems, they looked terribly fragile with poor communication in the game last night. More teams will be willing to have a go at them this season as a direct result of last seasons losses. However I certainly think they will improve upon last season at the very least.

we all seemed to blame Moyes for last season but that doesn't change the fact that the majority of the squad is poor.

It's like Fellaini, Cleverley, Jones, Smalling, Evans, etc etc are all now suddenly good players

LVG said Shaw was unfit, I take it that was down to poor techniques at Southampton.
So are all the new Liverhampton players now unfit too?

Shaw is not unfit, LvG said himself. But he requires extremely good fitness for the WB positions as they are the players that dictate whether the formation is defensive or attacking and will be running up and down the pitch all game.

Aye you're right about goals being the main thing. I guess it's just that with Dzeko you will solely be relying on goals. If he doesn't he will always get a low rating.
It's not a bad team on the whole though. I just think there will be times when you don't get a full XI out.

Couple of notes about the game last night from a United perspective.

    - Tired legs.
The high tempo throughout the game, and the fact both sides had played just two days ago meant there were a few tired figures out there, particularly Darren Fletcher, his passing was not up to scratch compared to the previous games on the tour. Although this really shouldn't be an issue for us next season, with no European commitments.

    - Ashley Young is like a new signing.
Don't question me on this one. It's only early days but he's already proven to van Gaal that he has the energy and ability to man an entire flank, from defence to attack. The fact that he still had the energy to burst down the right and pull the ball back for Kagawa(Lingard) after 87 minutes of running up and down the flank proves how fit he is(http://youtu.be/PFTykv12sbE?t=5m47s). Although his defensive capabilities could do with some fine tuning, after he let Sterling run in behind him, leading to a rash Phil Jones challenge which gave Liverpool the penalty.

    - Rooney & Shaw partnership is just surfacing.
On numerous occasions last night Rooney naturally drifted out to the left to link up with what was usually an isolated Shaw. The understanding of one anothers games at such an early stage is pretty impressive, and will hopefully continue, with either Shaw being released down the wing and becoming the creator or Rooney cutting inside and hitting a typical finesse shot. If this continues, both could be excellent fantasy assets.

    - Wing-backs are key.
Last night proved the importance of wing-backs. During the first half, the wing backs were very deep and unwilling to run up the line and take risks. van Gaal changed this at half-time, told the players to begin attacks about 15/20 further up, which meant even more defensive tracking back. This was very effective, as both Young(http://youtu.be/PFTykv12sbE?t=5m47s), and Shaw(http://youtu.be/PFTykv12sbE?t=3m23s) provided cutbacks which lead to United scoring.

    - The back three need work(Or we need to sign one ASAP).
It's obvious from last night that van Gaal loves having his back three(turning into a five) in a straight defensive line across the pitch, with either them all moving back as a unit, or if an opponent receives the ball just in front, one stepping out from the backline and being responsible for tracking that player until he passes the ball away/loses it.
It's clear the wide centre-backs(Jones & Evans) need to work on becoming the full-backs at times, as well as Young becoming more of a natural full-back and squeezing in as quick as possible.
The other thing to note is the back three need to work on their distribution, too many times last night the centre-backs couldn't play out from the back, Jones in particular needs work. de Gea is a prime example of how to distribute the ball well, finding the wing-backs unmarked with quick passes, or playing it down the flanks to Chicharito/Rooney when the opposition full-back is occupied by the wing-back.

    - Finally, take more risks.
This goes out to Herrera, Mata & Rooney in particular, who chose the easy option(playing it back to the wing-back/Fletcher) on too many occasions last night. Against quality opposition you must dare to be different, I didn't see too much of that last night, which was frustrating as all three have the ability to beat a man, take a long shot or play an exquisite through ball.

Oh, and we need a midfielder.
