Scout Scribbles – Costa Charged by FA

Diego Costa has been charged by the FA following the weekend encounter with Arsenal. Mame Biram Diouf could return for Stoke this evening, whilst Ryan Bertrand steps up his comeback for Southampton.

Costa Slapped with FA Charge

Diego Costa has been retrospectively charged with violent conduct by the FA for an incident involving Laurent Koscielny during Saturday’s win over Arsenal. Chelsea now have until 6pm on Tuesday to appeal the three-match ban.

The Scout Says: Costa is doubtless one of the top forwards in the league when on song, but his poor disciplinary record, recurring hamstring problems and relative aversion to bonus points conspire to diminish his appeal on the Fantasy market. The hot-headed Spain international sat out 12 matches last term through suspension (four) and injury (eight), and, should the FA repeat last season’s decision, which saw him retrospectively banned for three matches following a stamp on Emre Can, the forward would miss the Blues’ next three match-ups. This would see him sit out tomorrow’s cup clash with Walsall, in addition to league clashes against Newcastle and Southampton, with either Radamel Falcao or Loic Remy tasked with leading the line.

Pellegrini Boosted by Trio’s Return to Training

Pablo Zabaleta, Samir Nasri and Eliaquim Mangala were all snapped taking part in training ahead of Manchester City’s League Cup clash against Sunderland tonight. David Silva was also pictured but didn’t participate in the action.

The Scout Says: Whilst it remains to be seen whether Silva will be available for this evening, or indeed the weekend, owners will be desperate for the Spaniard to return after he missed the last two Gameweeks with ankle and calf problems. Silva racked up four assists and tallied 12 key passes in the first four Gameweeks and his absence has seen City score just twice in the subsequent two, with Kevin de Bruyne staking a claim for our attention by netting the hosts’ consolation against the Hammers. Bacary Sagna’s 11.5% ownership will be observing Zabaleta’s progress keenly – the Argentine right-back will be looking to reclaim a starting berth when back to full fitness, with doubts now growing over the Frenchman’s security of starts. Should Vincent Kompany fail to recover from a calf injury, Mangala could partner Nicolas Otamendi in central defence at Tottenham on Saturday as Pellegrini looks to return to winning ways.

Toffees Decide Against Mirallas Appeal

Roberto Martinez revealed on Tuesday that Everton will not appeal Kevin Mirallas’ red card against Swansea, conceding that’s it’s unlikely the decision would be overturned:

“We were really disappointed with the decision. The truth was it was his first challenge, his first action in the game, and it looks worse than it actually is. Kevin is never looking at the opposing player and there is never any intent. It’s a harsh red card. [But] from that, to be able to appeal and get the decision overturned is difficult. I don’t think we have a chance to do that. I just feel the red card was very harsh. Understanding how the system works, I don’t think we have got a chance to get it overturned so we need to feel hurt with the decision and support Kevin. He was just over-keen to win the ball and nothing else. It wasn’t reckless or dangerous.”

The Scout Says: After starting the season opener at home to Watford, Mirallas has been a peripheral figure for the Toffees this term and played just 47 minutes from Gameweek 2 onwards. Tom Cleverley’s injury opened the door slightly for the Belgian winger to increase his playing time, yet Muhamed Besic, Steven Naismith and Gerard Deulofeu (first off the bench against the Swans) are demonstrably ahead of the 6.8-priced midfielder in the pecking order. Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, both Naismith and Arouna Kone – who were stationed on the flanks at the weekend – are classified as forwards in FPL, leaving Ross Barkley as the one viable midfield candidate in the three slots behind lone striker Romelu Lukaku.

Diouf Steps Up Recovery

Mame Biram Diouf is likely to be named in Stoke’s squad to face Fulham in their midweek League Cup clash on Tuesday, having recovered from hamstring and groin problems that sidelined him last weekend:

The Scout Says: Both Diouf and Ibrahim Afellay – who served out the last match of his two-game suspension – could be line for a start at home to Bournemouth this Sunday. Although the former (if fit) is almost certain to displace Jonathan Walters at the lone-striker berth, the latter might have to muscle his way back into the side, given that Marko Arnautovic delivered a sumptuous reverse pass for Bojan Krkic’s opener against Leicester City. With the extra creativity and thrust that fit-again Bojan affords the Potters in the number-ten slot, Diouf could enjoy a strong run of form over a favourable quintet of match-ups (BOU, avl, swa, WAT, new). Despite sitting out the last round of fixtures, the Senegal international ranks joint second among forwards for shots on target (nine), highlighting his ability to cause damage in an underperforming Stoke outfit.

Jones nears United Comeback

Louis van Gaal has confirmed that Phil Jones returned to full training last Friday after recovering from a blood clot in his calf. The Dutchman conceded that Jones is not yet match fit ahead of the Red Devils’ home clash with Sunderland :

“I said last week that he was ready to train. And Friday was his first training session with the group. It’s nearly done, but he’s not match fit yet. It’s very early.”

The Scout Says: With Luke Shaw out of the picture, the 6.2-priced Chris Smalling stretching the bank balance and Matteo Darmian emerging as a surprise rotation risk (he was replaced by Antonio Valencia at half time of the Saints clash), Marcos Rojo (5.4) will doubtless attract investment before the Black Cats encounter. However, Jones’ return to action could thwart these best-laid plans, prompting Van Gaal to field Blind in the left-back berth to facilitate a Smalling-Jones centre-back partnership. For now, the Red Devils’ unforgiving quartet of fixtures (ars, eve, MCI, cry) beyond Gameweek 7 limit their clean-sheet prospects in the short term, though at a price of just 5.2, Jones is bound to attract interest if he can nail down a regular role.

Bertrand Handed Reserves Run Out

Ryan Bertrand clocked 46 minutes of pitch time as Southampton U21s ran out 4-2 victors over Reading U21s. This was the defender’s first appearance of the season, having been sidelined for the opening few weeks with a knee injury.

The Scout Says: Although Bertrand is expected to miss out at home to Swansea this Saturday as he builds up his match fitness, his eventual return to the side spells the end for budget pick-up Matt Targett. The Saints academy product was subbed at the break against Manchester United – with Cuco Martina taking his place in the second period – and looks poised for a bit-part role hereafter. Frustratingly, Ronald Koeman’s decision to bench Cedric Soares (5.0) and opt for Maya Yoshida at right-back last weekend means the former is no longer a guaranteed starter, further restricting our budget-friendly options in the Saints’ defence. With three clean sheets in four, Koeman’s side are finally starting to find their form again, though Bertrand (once fully fit) and Jose Fonte, at 5.4 apiece, now look the cheapest reliable starters in Koeman’s rearguard.

Been thinking a looot about whether to bring martial in or not...It involves changing my 352 strategy (rotating Wilson/deeney) to a 343 (upgrading deeney and downgrading sterling)...tough decision.

Having thought about it..It suddenly hit me..What are the chances of martial being rested this weekend? The more I think, the more I get confident that he will be rested. Has played 2 in a row..The ucl game midweek is very important..He is 19 so van Gaal would like to rest him when given the chance...sland @home seems like a good time to do it...

Thoughts? Am I right in my thinking or trying to convince myself to not buy martial

I've been led to believe that teenagers don't have the muscle-tone to cope with the strain the way guys in their twenties can. It harms their physical development, I understand.

Obviously, we're talking about elite athlete levels of performance optimisation. For guys playing amateur leagues, there wouldn't be a noticeable impact.

  4. What the Bookies Say - Gwk 6 review

Due to more work commitments, going to be easier to do the review as a hot-topic (hopefully) and keep the previews as an article. If people are still keen on them, I'll keep going 😀

    Here's a review of GW6:

Only 4 of the top 10 captaincy options under the FFS poll delivered attacking returns this week.

Only 2 (Tottenham & Bournemouth) of the top 5 likeliest to keep a clean sheet according to the bookies did just that, with only 6 teams in the whole league keeping a clean sheet this GW.

Only a Troy Deeney goal (yes it should have been Ighalo) and a Palace win kept the first bets from being winners this week.

2 exact scoreline predictions were a highlight for me this week (including Watford BTTS and Liverpool drawing 1-1 with Norwich)

Here are some stats from the games you might be interested in:

West Ham's Dimitri Payet has contributed to 12 goals (four goals, eight assists) in his last 14 league appearances in both the PL and Ligue 1 combined.

Of the 15 goals scored in Premier League games involving Crystal Palace this season, 12 have come after half-time.

Martin has scored as many goals in his last five Premier League games as he did in his previous 86 appearances in the competition. Form

United have scored from their last six shots on target in the Premier League

14 of Graziano Pelle's 16 league goals have come at home

No team in Premier League history has seen more players sent off than Arsenal with 79!

The Baggies have lost just one of their last seven Premier League matches on the road (W4 D2 L1), keeping five clean sheets in that run. (WBA defender anyone?)

Sunderland didn't manage a single shot on target after the 40th minute.

Steve McClaren has gone 10 Premier League games without a victory (six at Newcastle, four at Middlesbrough), his longest run without a win in the English top-flight.

Riyad Mahrez has scored seven goals and assisted three in his last nine PL appearances.

Swansea have not won any of their five Premier League meetings with Everton at the Liberty Stadium (D2 L3), scoring just two goals in the process.

After the next GW, it will be the 6th week in the series so I feel that will give a big enough sample size to collate some results from all the review. Enjoy your day.

Gargatron last season was very useful for managers to track how they've been doing captaincy wise. A score of 20-30% was pretty decent and I recall, more or less the average.

  6. Erratic Price Changes - The Strange Case of Pedro & Martial
    GunsnRoses
    • 12 Years
    8 years, 8 months ago

In case anyone wonders about the erratic price changes in IPL

    Pedro Joins Chelsea on 20th
So I am assuming he is added on 21st
Hence his price is protected for 10 days. So it should be about 31st.
Now for the first week he got 12k transfer in (23rd)
2nd week (29th) he got 363k transfer in and he scored 20 points in these two matches.
Now next week he got 173k transfer in
Since Perdo has scored in two weeks a huge portion of 173k must have transfered him on 29th,30th or 31st.
So Assuming that it could be very high we can see his ownership is about 450k by the time his price is unprotected.
And now he just got few transfer in .. now if FPL tower RESET the transfer in then I think it can be explained.
Next week he got -160k transfer out so he should be in the -ve transfer now.

For Martial, he got just 12k transfer in by 12th and by that time his price became unprotected so he had a very low ownership.
Now currently he sits at more than 12% owner ship and if I remember correctly before the first price rise his ownership was about 7-8%.
So I think it's not as absurd as it looks.

Need to bear in mind the net transfer in frequency per day. Did Pedro get 300K+ transfers in in two days or was it over the course of the week? Martial's 12 pointer coincided with Benteke's 1 pointer. Benteke is the highest owned forward in the game. Easy exit from Benteke. Straightforward swap, 8.5M Liv fwd out, 8M MU fwd in. If Benteke didn't get injured, I doubt Martial's rise would have happened this quickly.

He was on 2.3% ownership before he scored his first goal vs SOT
By the end of the match that was 3.5%
      And then it's history

If Costa gets banned and Beneteke is out we'll see 20K + more transfers in taking him well over 500K

And a 0.3m increase this week, 0.4m on Sunday morning.

If he scores vs Sun it'll go again, despite fixtures.....

He won't. I'm assuming, of course, that the price rules are the same as last season. After the 3rd rise (probably Thursday night but maybe Friday as he's obviously slowing down a bit), he's effectively price protected. None of the transfers count until the next gameweek starts. So he's got to go up 100% in a little over 12 hours on Saturday. I really doubt that it'll happen as most people who want him will have already got him.

    Who to captain? I'm torn!

    A) Aguero - can explode this week, but haven't yet found his form.
    B) Payet - good form and fixture, but unsure how much he'll score this week
    C) Martial - good form and good fixture, but unstable. Except from the LIV-goal, the rest has been because of defensive errors.

    What To Do About Chelsea

With new SOT AVL whu in the next four Chelsea have a set of great fixtures. But their early season form has been woeful - that was until last week's Champs Lg and Arsenal victories. Are we seeing an upturn in Chelsea form and if so which players are key to get in.

What of Costa's FA Charge, if he is out are Remy or Falcao options? Or will Oscar, Pedro or Hazard step up and score the goals.

Is investment in their defence the best course of action? If so is Azpilicueta the best option? Or is Zouma worth looking at.

Che player in was what I happened planned but Martial happened then. I'll probably get 1 or two Chelsea players next week. Looking at Azpi.

From memory last season when Costa was out, Hazard's numbers improved. I think that will happen again and we'll see Hazard gain some form. Remy and Falcao should be avoided.

Azpilicueta is definitely the best option in their defence. Not much point risking Zouma when Azpi is only 0.6 more.

They didn't score many goals when Costa was out (32-36) but that also coincided with the end of the season so Mourinho was grinding out 1-0 wins. Hazard was the man though I think.

I had a look at this earlier today (Hazard impact with and without Costa) - it actually stayed rather constant.

Got Bego on my GW4 WC. Enough Chelsea defence there. Rest are a bit of a minefield and Azpilicueta is expensive.

      Definitely Hazard.

I have Pedro now, but looking to shift to Hazard soon.
I'm not to convinced to go Double Chelsea because it's too early.

Yes, the defence looks more solid; but I will only invest after 1 or 2 more clean sheets.

      Maybe for Begovic.

      Good Hot Topic Jonty.

This has been playing on my mind as im sure it has for everybody else.

With Chelsea seemingly only going to get better from here on, its making me think Chelsea coverage is required.

Personally, im looking at Pedro for attackive returns and possibly Fabregas to start ticking over with his assists. It has to be said, im not too enthralled by Chelseas defence at present. But Azpi would be my safe bet if i had to choose one.

I was eyeing up Costa until the FA action. My gut feeling is that Pedro is the one, hence why he will be firmly deployed in my midfield for this Gameweek.

Playing on my mind too. I already have Pedro so am covered, but from gwk 8 I'll be looking to move Sanchez on and a Hazard/Pedro double up is a strong potential....with a view to ditching whichever underperforms over the weeks. This double up on big hitters from the same team tactic is one that has done me proud in the past as allows that flexibility of keeping the best one, or in the case of Suarez and Sturridge just keeping both.

Darmian to Azpi is defo on the cards. Especially with LVG bringing Valencia into the mix again and utd's fixtures toughening up after Sunderland.

I like that approach. I foolishly took Pedro out when he was flagged as doubtful last week. Im shipping Sanchez out this gw for Pedro. Brave more i know, but i feel Chelsea are more of a threat now than Arsenal away to a tough Leicester side.

Chelsea's fixtures through gameweek 21 are the best there is, better than any other team's over the same stretch... with their only tough matches being Liverpool at home in week 11 and Manu away in week 19.

Defense investment is a must. They have to and will turn it around. Azpi seems worth the premium for sureness of starts and bonus points over Zouma.

Costa being ruled out should be good for Hazard. Don't view Remy or Falcao as real options and we have plenty to choose from for our sacred 3 strikers. Monitoring Pedro, Fabregas and Oscar as well.

I'm probably going to double up on their defense with Azpi and Begovic. I expect them to grind out a lot of wins with 1-0 and 2-0 results. Not sure if any atacker except for Hazard is worth a bother, and I think Hazard may only be worth it while Costa is out (if he's out).

Have Pedro and keeping for these fixtures and likely to add Azpilicueta or maybe even add Ivanovic back in 😯 apart from maybe Hazard, I don't see many worth investing in with Zouma not nailed on

There's obviously nothing wrong with that Chelsea team Talent and Skill-wise. But the problem has been completely mental imo.

What was lacking in the first few matches, imo, was Fitness. Swansea had a strong pre season and ran them off the park, immediately causing some instability in Confidence. That Confidence was further battered over the next few matches and Mourinho's panicky/random outbursts was definitely not great for team and fan morale.

I think what we've seen is an uptick in confidence and morale over the past 2 games that has been a throwback to what brought them success last season - clinical in attack, strong at the back.

Confidence and feel-good factor should be much higher now amongst the team and fans. I won't be surprised if they spank the next few teams as fitness levels start getting better.

I think at least one Cehlsea defender/GK + mid is required soon. Key question is whther to go with Hazard or Pedro, and whether Begovic, Azpi or both. Got my wild card, so can monitor this weekend. Also a bit unsure about clean sheet potential against Newcastle, despite the Magpie's woeful form.

think we should be giving it another game before transferring in Chelsea assets, the CL game was against Maccabi Haifa so not much to go on and they looked very poor against Arsenal, just won because of Gabriel and Coquelin getting injured. with their notoriously poor for at the St. James' I would definitely give it a week before getting a Chelsea player.

Remy and Falcao are not worth it, will be in for 3 games tops and they haven't really showed any exemplary form.

defense investments should be Azpilicueta and Begovic if anyone, Zouma will definitely not play every game.

They definitely played better than they have been, but it was a derby. The question remains about their current form, was the arsenal game a blip, because of old rivalries, or have Chelsea managed to get a bit of passion back into their game.

Personally I would be amazed if Chelsea don't start getting their mojo back, they have one of the best teams on paper.

definitely, their two goals came from very shambolic defending from Koscielny who played everyone onside and a massive deflection, plus Arsenal's lone holding midfielder for the second half was a 5"6 player who got sent off later himself. they didn't really create much.

Arsenal are no pushovers. Chelsea looked good from the start. Maybe lacking in penetration until Gabriel was sent off, but there's no way you can say that they were very poor.

Oscar it is for me. 8.3m and playing in the hole. When he's fit he usually scores quite a few points as well. Only problem he had last year was that he was sacrificied for Ramires when Chelsea play top teams, but they don't play a lot of top teams in the coming GW's. Also, he played against Arsenal so he might have even more gametime than usual. No brainer for me.

Have my defence and midfield sorted. At GK already have Begovic which I always believed would be excellent value to get into the Chelsea defence. So will decide next week if it's the time of o double up on Chelsea back line by bringing in Azpi as well.

In terms of their attack, if Hazard starts showing his consistency then Sanchez to Hazard might be on the cards for me!

      Palace 1-2 Chelsea - nothing
      United 1-1 Chelsea - nothing
      Chelsea 3-0 Spurs - 1 goal
      Chelsea 1-1 City - 1 assist
      Villa 1-2 Chelsea - 1 goal
      Chelsea 1-0 Everton - nothing
      QPR 0-1 Chelsea - 1 assist

      Arsenal 0-0 Chelsea - nothing
      Leicester 1-3 Chelsea - nothing
      Chelsea 1-0 Palace - 1 goal

it looks like a 3 game ban. Costa seems to drop in sharpness every time he misses a game or two and it takes a while for him to get going again. The same happened when he was banned last season.

Rumours that Benteke won't be fit enough this weekend. Would have to take a hit to replace him.

So what should be done with him? (I have got Aguero and Wilson as other two strikers)

Take him out as he is not on form and Liverpool are woeful going forward.

Hello all. Sold Lovren to Evans already. 1 FT left and .9 itb. Any suggestions?

      McCarthy
      Kolorov, Evans, Richards
      Hazard, Sanchez, Yaya, Mahrez
      Aguero, Gomis, Wilson

      Boruc, Janmaat, Westwood, Morgan

      A) Save FT
      B) Richards to Zouma (bit risky?)
      C) McCarthy/Boruc to Begovic(how long is Courtouis out for?)
      D) other?

      Ighalo Aguero(vc) Martial (c)

      Bego Nyom Drinkwater Martin

I'd take Martin out. He can't keep this scoring rate up and Norwich look wobbly defensively.

good point - yes thats a 4.5 spot is up for grabs. Maybe Cook is a better choice

I would probably choose Yaya instead of Kdb and someone else for Cresswell

Or Silva... just getting a bit fed up with the same old players though.

Yeah, I'll pocket those price rises. SUN up next and not many other strikers to get at the moment...

Is pocketing 0.2m worth possibly burning a transfer? Personally think Ighalo/Pelle are better picks.

      Hi All,

Silva to Pedro for a hit?

Really worried about my defense and Sanchez.

      Begovic, McCarthy.
      Munisea, Richards, Francis, Evans, Smalling.
      Montero, Mahrez, Payet, Silva, Sanchez.
      Wilson, Rondon, Aguero.

0.2 ITB and no free transfers!

I just did that thing where I went to the toilet but realised when I got there that I'd forgotten my phone. Catastrophe! So i actually went all the way back to my seat to go get it.

Madness to drop Sanchez or Coutinho for Payet for a hit? I hate those two lumps in my team.

Basically boils down to this. Which would you do?

      1. Ayew+Gomis >> Payet+Martial -4.
      2. Ayew>> Payet.
      3. Gomis >> Martial.
