FA Cup Third Round Team News

With the FA Cup Third Round set to get underway later this evening, there’s been a raft of press conferences taking place over the last 24 hours. Here’s the main news coming out of the Premier League camps so far..

Phil Jagielka is set to start Everton’s clash with Dagenham and Redbridge as he steps up his recovery from injury. Seamus Coleman, Tom Cleverley and Romelu Lukaku are ruled out for the Toffees, though Roberto Martinez has confirmed the latter is reacting well to treatment after being forced off with an ankle knock against City in midweek.

Alexis Sanchez remains sidelined for Arsenal’s clash with Sunderland, Arsene Wenger has confirmed. The Chilean will also miss the midweek league trip to Liverpool but could be back in time for next weekend’s Gameweek 22 encounter with Stoke. Mikel Arteta is available to face the Black Cats, whilst Tomas Rosicky will return to full training next week.

Alan Hutton, Carlos Sanchez and Gabby Agbonlahor are all doubts for Villa’s clash with Wycombe tomorrow afternoon. Winger Adama Traore has been ruled out for eight-to-ten weeks with a broken bone in his foot.

Philippe Coutinho, Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure have all been ruled out of Liverpool’s encounter with Exeter tonight. Whilst Toure is expected back for the midweek visit of Arsenal, Lovren is likely to miss the next two league matches, whilst Coutinho is set to be sidelined for around three weeks, according to Jurgen Klopp. Jordon Ibe is also set to miss out after becoming the latest Liverpool player to sustain a hamstring injury.

Slaven Bilic has revealed that Manuel Lanzini is expected to be out “for two or three weeks” with the groin problem sustained against Liverpool. Winston Reid is back in full training for the Hammers, whilst Victor Moses is set to return to training after the weekend.

Yohan Cabaye returns from a one-match suspension for Palace’s clash with Southampton. Alan Pardew has talked up the fit-again Bakary Sako and revealed he also hopes to have Connor Wickham and Dwight Gayle available for the Gameweek 21 trip to Villa on Tuesday evening.

Graziano Pelle is set to miss Southampton’s cup clash with Palace, Ronald Koeman has confirmed. The Italian has a chance of making the midweek match against Watford, though, as he steps up his recovery from a knee problem. Victor Wanyama serves the first of a two-match ban this weekend, Cedric Soares is fit for selection once again and Sadio Mane will return to the starting XI after being dropped last week for disciplinary reasons. Koeman also revealed that Frazer Forster remains out this weekend – the keeper will be assessed after he plays for the reserves again on Monday before a decision is made over his first-team return.

Geoff Cameron is a doubt for Stoke’s match with Doncaster after picking up an ankle problem in training. Mark Hughes also has concerns over Phil Bardsley (groin) and Stephen Ireland (thigh).

Sam Allardyce has hinted at rotation ahead of Sunderland’s trip to the Emirates. Jack Rodwell, Younes Kaboul, Seb Larsson and Adam Matthews remain sidelined through injury for the Black Cats.

Quique Sanchez Flores has revealed he won’t make too many alterations for Watford’s showdown with Newcastle, though the Watford boss conceded it’s possible he will rest “at least one” of Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney.

Eddie Howe has revealed that Josh King was forced off with a niggle against Leicester last week and will continue to be monitored. The Bournemouth boss also confirmed his side are yet to receive a work permit for new boy Juan Iturbe.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Ok Spurs fans and others... I ve been read right now some text about how Real wants Kane for price around 100.000.000 euro.... So if it's true, which players would you like to see in Spurs like replace??? I know for that money we could buy few players (like when Bale was sold), but now just 2 pure quality players... I vote for Ighalo and Mane 😀

its not true its the mirror
When he goes to man utd in the summer for 60 odd (hopeful man utd fan)

I'd go for Bony, Mane, and a proper winger not sure who though

Why not an swap, Kane for Ronaldo + 25M, since Ronaldo is evaluated at 75M.
With Ronaldo up front, I think Spurs can.. not only finish in top4, but win the league.. They are in a perfect position this season for a push. Ronaldo can still play 2yrs at top level

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is it time for a complete overhaul of our frontlines?

With Lukuku injured and with poor fixtures, Kane next to useless without Dembele and Vardy’s form slipping and a doubt for next week are this trio’s days numbered?

Who should replace them? Ighalo has done nothing wrong and looks a great prospect still. But will be he unsettled by transfer gossip linking him to bigger sides?

What of Diego Costa, he has the form and fixtures to shine surely?

And then there’s Aguero? Is he now essential? Or is KDB enough coverage for now?

If I was wildcarding right now I'd probably go Aguero+Costa+1 other - Lukaku, Kane or Ighalo is a tough choice!

I'm surprised Vardy is even being considered given his form and the other options available. Time to let that one go...

Check the members area and Kane's stats when Demebele is out. Alli becomes the forward and Kane is, well, next to useless as a FPL asset. Hopefully that will change but without Dembele Kane is a shadow of his usual self.

You must have noticed Alli playing further forward. Kane forced to track back. Alli's passes to team mates being not quite as good as Dembele's then so all's well. 🙂

Jonty you need to remember that Dembele hardly played last season and Kane scored 21 goals.

Kane's lack of form recently has been down to tiredness, he's played almost every game. It's nothing to do with Dembele not playing. Also if you look at when Dembele has played - Kane has scored in relatively easy fixtures.

I'm not buying into these stats and heat maps, it's mainly down to tiredness. I will eat my words though if Kane doesn't get at least 2 goals in the next 2 game weeks but I think he will.

Also Ali will stay further forward when Dembele is back in a few weeks so this also will not make a difference.

You're right it's not so much Dembele having a direct impact on Kane's chances rather as Jonty points out Alli playing further forward when Dembele is out. This causes Kane to drop back and try to get involved in the game. As a Spurs fan who watches the games this is very clear. Alli going forward has a negative impact on Kane's position

I'm on Aguero, Kane and Lukaku at the moment.

Aguero + Kane/Lukaku + Ighalo looks a nice, balanced front 3 to me if it looks like I'll need Sanchez in midfield.

I haven't owned Iggy all season yet though, so will see who of Kane/Lukaku should make way, if any.

I'm in a quandry on this. Have 2 FT's, I think I'll keep Lukaku and Kane and sell Vardy. I will need to sell Sterling or Walcottt for Alli to get Aguero, but can't decide which lol. Walcott goes to a Liverpool team with no fit defence, Sterling has two home games...

Aguero, Kane(fixtures), Lukaku(form) looks the way forwards for me. With Mahrez whom I bought at 5.8m covering Leicester.

thats really tough, having 2 spurs is a bit overkill (which I actually have if I'm honest). was leaning to wally myself as sterling is the most likely to be subbed in a city game plus I think his finishing is beyond woeful

Yes true. I could do Vardy+Lukaku > Ighalo+Kun, but my rival has Lukaku and Ighalo. If Lukaku keeps scoring I can't see me gaining. I need Kane and Kun - neither of which he has at present - to do the biz in their two home games.

It has to be Sterling our for Alli as I'm gaining an in-form mid with two home fixtures over Sterling who simply has two home fixtures so there's some upside there, and Vardy in for Kun, with 0.9m left over. Then if Theo gets rotated I can always go back to Sterling or get someone new.

I have Alli and Kane in Sky and it's worked out pretty well over the last month!

I still feel kane deserves his place and cannot understand not having igalho so if you want to replace any of the main hitters with someone its him in my book. Currently my frontline is Aguero Ighalo Kane

KDB not enough to cover aguero, simply because Aguero when fit is up there with Suarez for 4th best striker in the world

I'm struggling with this, I was set on Giroud to Ighalo, leaving me with Lukaku/Kane/Ighalo, but I am slightly concerned about the transfer rumours, as you mention. I vowed that I would not rush to get Aguero back, after being burned so badly last time, but it's so damn hard to resist. With 2FTs, I could do a simple defensive downgrade and Giroud -> Aguero.

Also, is he essential? Was that put in to specifically antagonise me Jonty? 😉

City aren't playing that well at the moment, so I'm not sure neither about Aguero, nor KDB.

Costa is a good prospect but will he be starting all the games now? If yes - he's very good.

I have no doubts about Ighalo or even Kane - they're too essential now to just fade.

Lukaku is a monster but Everton aren't that consistent - that said, I'm keeping him for now (his injury doesn't seem that serious).

As for Vardy - I haven't seen Leicester play recently, so can't judge. Not transferring him back in yet, that's for sure.

            I like.
It's jacked the way they changed the prices, so hard to put out the 11 you want.

Also auto subs are only at the same position. So if a forward doesnt play, and mid or Def is not subbed in.
Can be key with minor injuries

Just to let you guys know that an update to the members area is currently in testing and is planned for rollout tomorrow afternoon.

This will include a fix for the "Goal Attempts" bug that some members have been experiencing.

Was going to downgrade Ramsey initially, however now with Vardy and Lukaku doubts I feel one may need to be replaced... But no one standing out other than maybe Giroud but that'd mean taking a hit as have 3 arsenal already.

        What would you suggest?

        Schmeichel
        Koscienly Dann Cresswell
        KDB Ozil Ramsey Mahrez
        Ighalo Vardy Lukaku

        Gomes. Arnie Moreno Kolerov

I'm seeing all these w/c RMT's with more than half of teams have no rotation in defence.

Have people just given up on it?

I don't think it's necessarily been given up on but because there's no "forced" wildcard in January people aren't looking at rotations for the rest of the season, just a defender who can do a good job for the next 4-5 matches etc.

I don't think people are paying any attention to rotations at all, shame really because early wildcards now seem to be about getting the same teams as people higher up the rankings, which is ultimately futile.
More needs to be made about rotations and alternative defence theory by FFS opinion makers..

In terms of this Kane/Dembele/Alli theory, what actually happens when Dembele is missing?

Is it that the formation changes and Kane plays behind Alli as more of a number 10, or does Kane just not play as well? I'm wondering if it's how the team sets up from the outset or just that Kane is forced to drop deeper in order to get involved more.

          1. Still Unsure
              8 years, 4 months ago

The stats are showing that Dembele's higher passing accuracy means he links the play better and therefore Kane stays further forward and gets more chances. When he's missing, Alli plays further forward and his passing accuracy is terrible, therefore Kane gets less service and spends more time coming deep to get involved in play.

              Basically.

Not a massive difference. Conceded/match exact same, and only 0.16 more scored/match w Dembele. In this small sample, the fixtures may weigh heavy.

Yeah, potentially. I don't have the time to analyse that, though!

It's just a theory, anyway, I'm not entirely saying I buy into it. He's only missed a handful of games so the sample size is very small.

As people have commented below, Dembele is just much better than his replacements (Carroll, Mason) so it's obvious that will affect the team's service to the striker, I would've thought.

For those curious, in the PL:

                            With Dembele: 6W, 8D, 1L
                            Without: 3W, 1D, 1L

Kane Goals per game w/ Dembele: 0.66
Kane Goals per game w/o Dembele: 0.2

I see, so not necessarily that Poch employs different tactics, but more the direct result of losing a very good player who in Dembele who can link the play up. If Dembele playing is good for Kane's fpl prospects, is no Dembele better for Alli?

Basically means that Alli is woeful at the most important thing that midfielder should be good at and Kane has to do all the playmaking when they are missing Dembele.

His poor passing accuracy could because of playing further forward and taking more risks as a forward thinking player? But yeah Dembele at the mo is certainly a much better all round playmaker

Or he has gradually moved further up because of his awful passing?

And, fyi, if you check his match history, this looks like the true scenario, as he produced sub-80% pass completion rates already when playing lower in the midfield in the early season.

Yeah I wondered that as well, whether Poch thought his skill set was more suited to playing further forward. Probably mainly this as the sub 80% pass completion shows. I wonder if he is more willing to take risks and adapt his game when playing further up the field?

How does this look for this gameweek:

                    Vardy + Ramsey + Kolarov ---> Aguero + 4.6m MID + Dier (-4 hit)

-Allows me to bring in Aguero
-Means I can start Lukaku just incase he does play but have a 5th MID to come in if need be
-Sorts out my defensive problems and means I have a Spurs defender for their good fixtures

Zidane's first lineup as Real madrid coach is expected to look like this:

Keylor – Carvajal, Pepe, Ramos, Marcelo – Kroos, Modric, Isco – Ronaldo, Benzema , Bale.

Which really reminds me of how they need a DM/CM.

Because he was terrible, very slow and not a cdm. he's a box to box powerhouse like a Fellaini with worse shooting, not a holding anchorman.

Sorry, not trying to say he's a bad player, he just really wasn't what we needed.

Half the players you buy are not quite what you need. Kroos could basically be the replacement for Özil, though, they're very similar players in many ways. Maybe Zizou will put him in that role and a new era will begin at Real.

This Lass Diarra thing really is a strange one. And Özil. Both were excellent, and extremely useful tactically, neither was really adequately replaced. And you can add ADM to that list.

Ozil was "replaced" by James Rodriguez.. No?

Lass Diarra I think was replaced by a mixture of Illaramendi and Casemiro, neither of whom are as good at CDM.. but I've given up on expecting Madrid to be sensible in the transfer market 😛

Oh yeah, I forgot about Illaramendi. But let me ask: in a tough tactical position that DM/CM is, why do you sell a sure value and replace him with a player you don't quite know if he'll do the job yet?

I didn't think James is really the same player as Özil. Kroos rather.

Haha nobody knows Camp.. Maybe due to nationality or something, it's a bit of a farce at times anyway.

Kroos is closer to Ozil than James, but purely in terms of position in Madrid's team, I'd say Isco/James are closer to what Ozil was..

He was not sexy enough for their shirt. But he wasn't really a DM either, although at Real he was apt for that.

They have one in Casemiro, he's probably JUST below the level they need though in terms of potential.

I'd go for Ruben Neves 🙂

Does anyone else buy into the theory that only so much is possible from a player over the course of a season, in terms or goals/assists/clean sheets etc.

For example Ozil has 16 assists already, I believe, the most ever PL assists is 20, from Henry in a totally dominant, free scoring Arsenal team, if Ozil carries on at the rate he's going to smash this record.

Same with Mahrez, is it really possible for a Leicester midfielder to score 25 goals in a season, the most from a midfielder since Ronaldo.

What I'm asking is have we seen the best of these players 'Ozil, Vardy, Lukaku, Mahrez etc' and should we be looking to cash in on the price rises before the form dips away and the TV drops, or do we keep them for the season, injury permitting, and trust in their quality?

Take each one of individual merits i suppose. I see no reason why Ozil won't continue given his proven record and Arsenal's tenancy to finish the season strong.

The likes of Vardy/Igahlo i'd expect to slow down considerably given that i expect Leicester and Watford to fall away

The only thing I keep thinking of with Ighalo is Charlie Austin. I agree that Watford will probably have a dip in form and a bad spell but even getting relegated last year Austin was able to score a bunch of goals

I expect something similar with Igalho, but that would mean him scoring just 4 more goals in the remaining games to match Austin. I could deal with that as a non-owner all season!

Ozil has been the best player in the league but he's getting a lot of assists that other players wouldn't get. He probably won't get close to 16 assists in the second half of the season.

Ozil has been breaking assist records for years, and is a proven world class player, so I think he's a different case - he has the stats to back it up. He may not end up on 30+, but he'll smash the record. Leicester and Watford will, I expect, have a tough patch at some point. I don't believe Vardy and Mahrez will continue at the rate that they have, and Ighalo may not either, but they should all still provide excellent value. I don't think they are having a Michael Ricketts-esque purple patch, they are quality players (particularly Mahrez and Ighalo), but the rate they have hit so far is ridiculous.

If Walcott, Giroud and Ramsey had been finishing better recently Ozil would already be on about 25 assists! I really hope he gets to 30.

Ozil has undoubted quality, but my questions is based purely on statistics, when you consider the most ever PL assists is 20, even when you think of the Chelsea and Utd teams of the mid-late 00's scoring around 100 goals a season, no one has more than 20 assists, and I don't think Arsenal will get near 100 goals this season either.

So it is really conceivable to think Ozil will better the 20 assist record by a margin? and if not is it really worth 10m for a player who might only get another 5-6 assists in the 2nd half of a season?

Excellent Michael Ricketts reference by the way.
