Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Son Steers Spurs Through

Heung-Min Son grabs a goal and assist as Spurs sweep aside Leicester at the King Power. Christian Benteke blanks again as Liverpool ease past Exeter at Anfield. Eden Hazard is back in training for Chelsea, whilst Adnan Januzaj is set to earn a recall to United’s squad for the weekend visit of Southampton.

Son Sparkles in Spurs win

Tottenham Hotspur ran out 2-0 victors over Leicester City in their FA Cup replay to line up a trip to Colchester in the fourth round. Heung-Min Son arguably produced his best performance in a Spurs strip, rifling home the opener (Tom Carroll assist) and delivering a through ball for Nacer Chadli’s goal. Popular Fantasy picks such as Harry Kane and Dele Alli didn’t start but were called upon in the second half, while Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele were given the night off. Eric Dier displayed his versatility by slotting back into central defence.

The Scout Says: Given that Mauricio Pochettino has a propensity for rewarding standout performers in cup competitions with league starts, Son will be pushing for a start when Spurs travel to Crystal Palace this Saturday, with Erik Lamela perhaps the man most under threat. From a Fantasy standpoint, the South Korean’s classification as a forward undermines his chances of ever attracting investment. For now, Alli (5.5) represents the choice route into Tottenham’s midfield – irrespective of Christian Eriksen’s brace last time out. The former MK Dons starlet ranked top among midfielders for attempts (14) over the last four Gameweeks, highlighting his budget potential.

Foxes drought continues

Claudio Ranieri made eight alterations to his side as Leicester’s mainly second-string unit came up short against Spurs’ well-drilled outfit. The likes of Demarai Gray and Ben Chilwell elevated their standing with eye-catching displays, whilst Riyad Mahrez remained rooted to the bench throughout and Jamie Vardy was introduced at the 74-minute mark as the Foxes searched for an unlikely comeback.

The Scout Says: Having crashed out of the FA Cup, Leicester now lay claim to just one win in seven outings across all competitions. Moreover, they chalked up just four goals over that stretch, illuminating their drop off on the attacking front. Clearly the East Midlanders are suffering from their much-vaunted duo’s recent lack of productivity: Mahrez has drawn five successive blanks, while Vardy hasn’t netted in six league starts. The former is still FPL’s most popular player (65% ownership) by a significant margin, but that figure could start to plummet if he doesn’t hit form during Leicester’s challenging quartet of upcoming fixtures (STO, LIV, mci, ars). Both Mahrez and Vardy will be buoyed by Stoke’s recent form on the road, though, with the Potters shipping five goals in their last two away fixtures at Everton and West Brom.

Much-changed Reds progress

Liverpool cruised into the fourth round of the FA cup by way of a 3-0 win over Exeter, setting up a home clash against West Ham United. Joe Allen struck first, before Joao Teixeira and Sheyi Ojo applied gloss to the scoreline in the second period. Christian Benteke, Brad Smith and Jordon Ibe supplied the ammunition. Fan favourite Jon Flanagan was subbed on in the 51st minute to make his first appearance following an 18-month injury layoff.

The Scout Says: Given that Jurgen Klopp fielded a very inexperienced team against the League Two outfit, there was little to glean from the Merseysiders’ comfortable victory. That being said, the fact that Benteke was tasked with leading the line elucidates Klopp’s intention to deploy Roberto Firmino as a false nine for Liverpool’s trip to Norwich this weekend. On that note, the 7.8-priced Brazilian boasts strong differential-potential ahead of an alluring quartet of match-ups (nor, lei, SUN, avl).

Hazard back in training for Blues

Reports indicate that Eden Hazard stepped up his rehabilitation from a groin injury by returning to team training on Wednesday.

The Scout Says: Hazard has completed just one league match (a turgid stalemate with Manchester United in Gameweek 19) under Gus Hiddink’s reign, so we’re yet to see whether the Blues’ managerial change can act as the catalyst to kick start his campaign. Certainly, since the departure of Jose Mourinho, the likes of Willian (one goal, five assists) Diego Costa (four goals, two assists) and Oscar (two goals, two assists) have all served up the points, whilst Cesc Fabregas bagged a goal and assist against Everton last weekend. The 10.8-priced Belgian will be looking to replicate his team-mates’ improvement, having produced just one goal and three assists this campaign, but light of the fact that he’s slipped down the spot-kick pecking order and has accrued just seven shots on target in 19 outings, the jury is out for now.

Januzaj set for United squad return

Having been recalled from his loan to Borussia Dortmund earlier in the month, Adnan Januzaj netted a brace for Manchester United’s U21s on Monday. In response, Louis van Gaal is set to include the Belgium international in the Red Devils’ matchday squad for their home encounter against Southampton this Saturday.

The Scout Says: Available for 5.5, Januzaj flickered briefly on our radars at the start of the season, scoring in one of his two starts before being farmed out to Dortmund. Three goals and as many assists over the first seven Gameweeks saw Juan Mata emerge as an United’s main man in the early stages of the season but the ex-Chelsea playmaker has managed one goal and zero assists since then, starving us of any viable route into Man United’s midfield. Van Gaal has started Jesse Lingard (4.2) in each of the last two, though, and the youngster found the net against Newcastle in Gameweek 21, suggesting he could stake a claim for regular pitch time. Recently, though, the Red Devils’ upturn in attacking output has seen Wayne Rooney (four goals and one assist in three) establish himself as the chief source of attacking points amongst their ranks. England’s all-time top scorer has rediscovered his groove of late and could profit from a schedule that includes back-to-back home ties (SOU, STO) and a trip to Sunderland over the next four Gameweeks.

    Repost:

Btw, on the Koscielny is a bap magnet thing...

He's got 14 baps but 8 of those were due to him scoring in the respective game.

Bellerin on the other hand has 7 but none in the 2 games he got assists and Monreal has 8 with only 1 coming from a game where he got an assist.

Don't really think there's much in it in terms of consistent baps besides from the better goal threat Koscielny carries.

Looks like baseline BPS wise Koscielny is ahead on average - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WN7wHzk8VeoCdPEZM40uFi0UVUVM81RU9dNl5R1GlBc/pubhtml#

Bellerin still a decent pick though.

Hey guys, thoughts on doing Ramsey -> Firmino here?

    Butland
    Toby, Monreal, Evans
    Ozil, Ramsey, Payet, Mahrez
    Kun, Lukaku, Ighalo

    Schmeichel, Alli, Darmian, Dann

I'd much rather have Ramsey. I'd free up some defensive cash, personally. Darmian > Simpson and bank the other one. You may want to upgrade Ighalo next week if he blanks again.

I suppose Ramsey doesn't really have to go but i feel transfer in defence is a bit of a waste. Could Targett be an option over Simpson as i already have Schemichel and i think it's 50/50 on Darmian or Dann out. CPL have conceded 8 in 3. Man u coming off a CS

Lost at end of last page. Never burnt a transfer (I have 2ft) but I cant see anything worth doing with just 0.4 in the bank.

    Butland ,Elliott
    Toby, Belerin, Moreno, Simpson, Evans

    Kane, Lukaku, Aguero

Let a transfer go? Maybe Mahrez to Mirrales?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

In a lively Scoutcast last night the Agueroless (Mark) took on the Aguero-ed (Myself, Andy and D1sable)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJO1YStvHoo

Mark's argument is that while Aguero is a good player his huge price tag means too many sacrifices have to be made elsewhere in the squad (eg having a cheap defence). Our argument was that as we saw in GWK 8 and GWK 22 his ability to produce a huge haul particularly at home makes him an asset it is dangerous to go without.

So which argument is right? Is Aguero too costly and therefore ruins your squad? Or is he worth every penny, in a season where cheap defenders are doing well anyway?

Be good to hear from Aguero-ed and Aguero-less alike.

      Lloris - Hennessey
      Baines - Toby - Bellerin - Moreno - Wollscheid
      KdB - Ozil - Payet - Mahrez - Arnie
      Kun - Lukaku - Ighalo

If you have a cheap enoguh third striker, Kun + decent defence is more than affordable.

As I may have mentioned before - There's no way Aguero is worth 13 point something the majority of the time. But at the moment he gets 16+ points as your captain and your rivals don't have him, then both you and your rivals quickly come to the conclusion that he's worth every penny.

For me Aguero's return to form has coincided with a desire to actually weaken my bench.

A key problem for me this season has been having too good a squad - but a complete failure to pick the right XI from it. Too many bench points so far. Since getting Aguero in I've started to get those points within the team and not the bench. Certainly makes decisions each week easier. More than happy to have Ryan Bennett as third sub if it means I can have Aguero, Kane, Lukaku, KDB, Ozil and at least one premium defender (in my case Ivanovic although I'm tempted to get Koscielny in for him in the next week or so).

I have Aguero alongside two other expensive forwards, I have expensive mids, expensive defenders and an expensive keeper.. I'm interested to know where he sacrifices my team?

      Courtois
      Baines - Bellerin - Walker - Moreno - Simpson
      KDB - Ozil - Mahrez - Alli - Stanislas
      Aguero - Lukaku - Kane

      1.4 in the bank also

You have accumulated funds by having two bargain midfielders (Three if you count Mahrez).

          Similar to mine too:

          Butland - Hennessey
          Bellerin - Moreno - Evans - Ward - Targett
          KDB - Ozil - Payet - Alli - Mahrez
          Lukaku - Aguero - Kane

          £0.3m ITB

I know I'm about one decent defender short but I just can't see that there's enough consistency out there at the moment to invest in defenders. This means that the front 7/8 can be pretty good without needing to chop and change. I've earmarked Mahrez as the makeweight for a DGW player as and when they come (e.g. Barkley/Deulofeu/Henderson) as he has a sale value of £7.0m for me (I sold him at the same time as Granville but then brought him back) so I'm not worried about losing money here.

I'm not going to make many more changes now until we have a good view of the DGW plans as that is what is important in the next phase of the game.

Haven't listened yet but 100% feel u need aguero there for the (c). Last week for example that's 32 points behind and a ruined gw. I don't feel it ruins the squad either. Lots of mid priced midfielders payet, mahrez, Arnie, firmino, Alli are amongst the strongest options.

I think there are plenty of people that can afford both, I have this team now.

      Butland - McCarthy
      Moreno - Toby - Bellerin - Ward - Simpson
      KdB - Ozil - Payet - Mahrez - Alli
      Kun - Lukaku - Kane

Still have 2 FT and 0.5 in the bank as well, so Ward -> Target and Moreno -> Baines is an option to give me this:-

      Butland - McCarthy
      Baines - Toby - Bellerin - Target - Simpson
      KdB - Ozil - Payet - Mahrez - Alli
      Kun - Lukaku - Kane

      Looks good to me...

I think Team Value is key- if you have accumulated a decent TV so far then you'll be well set to get Aguero and not destroy the rest of your team.

However the Caveat with this is that you do probably need a couple of lower to mid price assets to carry on their early season form (Igalho, Alli, Vardy etc...)

Im very surprised by mark's stance. He identified being stubborn has the reason for his horror season 2 years ago but here he is digging in on a quite untenable argument.

Aguero has the highest pts season in the game and is a great captain option each week. I remember mark in seasons gone by arguing why you pay the top money for the top players like RVP for the captaincy effect. He was right back then imo.

Money is not much of an issue this year anyway. Most have Aguero kane and lukaku and still have room for kdb and ozil. There are no sacrifices needed.

Madness to be going without imo.

Great scoutcast yesterday, loved it. Good debate guys. I think if you bought every crucial player at the right time, you could have a decent team even if Aguero is in it.

      Hennessey - McCarthy
Daniels - Alderweireld - Koscielny- Cresswell - Wollscheid
      KdB - Ozil - Payet - Mahrez - Stanislas
      Kun - Lukaku - Kane

I quite like my team, I know I have a GK problem for this GW but I like my chances for the next few. So if I needed a better GK I could get him with downgrading one of my defenders.

I think you can have Aguero and still have a decent team. But I get what Mark is trying to say. Not everybody can have Kun and all the premium players at the same time and it could be a problem for them.

      Cheers.

I didn't really see any logic to Mark's argument if I'm being honest except from 'I'm not going to manage a better rank than next year so I'm gonna try something a bit different'. There was really no strength in his argument to convince me, or a fair few others that he's better off without Aguero.

For starters, you can only play 11 players so being able to bench a 7-8m player because you have a great squad is simply a luxury. Secondly, money really isn't THAT tight at the moment and you can see plenty of players with Aguero-Kane-Lukaku front lines, as well as the likes of KDB, Ozil and a few good defenders (Toby, Bellerin). Perhaps you could argue that when Sanchez is back and firing you won't be able to afford them all but this is also not a strong argument because: a) Aguero over Sanchez every day of the week, and b) you always have the option of getting rid of KDB or downgrading to Silva and upgrading someone else.

All in all, I just don't see the appeal in not buying Aguero at all. You need to trouble yourself week in week out with captaincy, you don't 'need' a strong squad but maybe just 1 solid sub most of the time and, finally, Mark's argument relies on him making 2-3 week constant, short term punts which I don't think is feasible.

That said, fair play to Mark who wants to enjoy the game more so if those are his motives I fully understand his decision. If we're just talking about maximising your points and doing as well as you can in OR, then I don't agree with him.

I agree with this . If I was going to go Agueroless I would want to be stocking up on expensive mids like Hazard and Sanchez . Having a slightly better defence and an expensive 5th mid does not appeal

I'm a fully paid up Aguero owner and haven't felt like I've been making big sacrifices anywhere in my squad up to this point. Thanks to the likes of Alli, Mahrez, Vardy, etc. it hasn't been a problem fitting in Aguero, Kane, Lukaku, De Bruyne, Ozil, Payet...

Perhaps that will change if Sanchez/Hazard start firing but at the moment I have a strong midfield and attack, Butland in goal with a playing back up and my cheapest defender is still 4.8.

      Feisty Scoutcast last night!
Got to hand it to Mark sticking to his guns but an Aguero on form is a must have.
The leader of my ML now has Aguero but the advantage I have is having a few million better TV which I'm hoping will eventually mean I can close the gap once someone like Sanchez or Costa become must haves.

If you don't have Kun you are probably spending that money on KDB anyway. He costs as much more than other midfielders (Sanchez aside) as Aguero does more than other top strikers. And isn't as good.

it's not such a big problem at the moment when budget midfielders are performing and there aren't many premium defenders really performing or essential.
Also there's no pressure at the moment to get in other big money premium players like Hazard, Sanchez.
i don't see anyone that Aguero is keeping out of my side for purely financial reasons.
if anything he's more essential now as the 2nd half of season should see the better sides start to up the ante.

      You're both right.

I've captained Aguero for both gw8 and gw22, certainly unable to imagine not having him. This forum's echo chamber has confirmed my obsession with him on numerous goal scoring occasions.

I've also taken a -8 to get him in only to see him injured in the next match, and have repeatedly watched him fail unlike any other captain choice, and have just looked to see these are his returns for the season so far:
      25, 16, 9, 6, 6, 5
The rest are blanks or injury. Doesn't seem like 13m well spent the majority of the time.

The challenge is if you can spend it well, and in the first half you really couldn't so Aguero was a luxury worth having. Now that the forwards form table has five of the most expensive players, and the cheaper options in attack are predictably reverting to type, money is tighter so he now becomes a luxury item that has to lead the line and produce, IMO.

I agree that it's to a certain degree a gamble that he'll stay healthy, and that he's back to his best form. But history has shown that when both is the case, he'll go on a run with repeated double figure hauls. Should he during next few weeks blank too many times to justify his premium , no problem getting rid and revert to a more expensive midfield.

For me I have to go with Aguero because I know everyone ahead of me will have him and he is good so he will get those double figures. As for captaining him I dont really need to captain him week in week out. If I have some good options like Kane & Lukaku I would pick the one who has the best form & fixtures just like this weekend I'm going with Lukaku for his good home form. So getting Aguero in my squad is just for security really just like what D1sable said!

Marks argument for going without Aguero seems like a simple points/£ calculation to me.

      For illustration purposes only:

If Aguero is capable of a 200 point season and the next best captain is capable of a 175 point season. That's 200 points for Aguero and 50 points for the captain deficit (25 x 2) that we have to find elsewhere with our £13M. You could also remove the baseline equivalent for a striker that turns up each week at 5M - 76 points.

That means Mark just has to make sure that every £1M he spends is worth at least 18 points more than the baseline equivalent e.g. if I can be assured of 2 points a week for Fletcher at 4.3M, then Mark will need to get at least 96 for 5.3M, 116 for 6.3M etc.

If the relationship between points and prices was linear, then Mark would have a good argument.

The issue of course is the number of players that are putting in a performance above their price point (all the ones we have already picked) and the inability of the FPL transfer system to adjust pricing in good time.

In any case, it seems like a good experiment and I would love for Mark to be successful.

      Am I oversimplifying it?

      Kun isn't needed.

      Never scores in away games
An injury waiting to happen especially with all the games Citeh have
Only two decent scores all season
Price stops you having the Power 5 milfs

With the armband slapped on Aguero, what you are basically getting for 13m is two world class players each for 6.5m.

While the likes of Wijnaldum is 7m and Barkley somes at 7.3. So definitely Aguero-ed is the way to go. That's how simple it is, and I don't own Aguero atm if anyone is interested to know.

Mudhoney was one of my favourite ever gigs as a teenage - a packed and sweaty Zap Club in Brighton.

Shellac too - incredible live band. Looks a brilliant line up.

Deerhunter too - another great live band.

It's an incredible line up, those that you mentioned then Radiohead (my favourite band), PJ Harvey, Sigur Ros, the genius that is Brian Wilson, Richard Hawley, Animal Collective, Tame Impala, Dinosaur Jr...pretty much every artist on there is brilliant.

I know! The first gig I ever went to was Wilson performing Smile in its entirety in 2004, he's completely shot to pieces but I think he's one of music's true geniuses. Pet Sounds is an astoundingly beautiful record.

      yeah it;s unreal

Brian Wilson doing Pet Sounds, although he is awful live, always has been, if the band are good it shouldn't matter.

It's sad that he seems to be wheeled out as something of a novelty act now, I think some people are unaware that he didn't just write feel-good surfing songs, he actually created some of the most beautiful music in existence. I grew up obsessed with The Beach Boys, I barely listened to anything else for years, Pet Sounds has a strong claim to being the greatest album ever made.

I'm a big fan of Surf's Up myself. Pet Sounds in an incredible album but not sure how he will do live. Even at his peak he was never very good at live performance (I don't mean that in a negative/mean way, he was more a studio guy and I know he had a lot of personal issues)

As I say if he gets the right band it could really be something special.

Umm, good team, but 1 obvious thing...Lukaku....

Now I know Ighalo is home to Newcastle, and he's been good at home, but Lukaku is better this week...I guess getting Lukaku next week and letting Ighalo ride out this week is also a good option?
The other thing which i did, whilst others havn't just yet (trust me, this will work out) is got rid of Ozil last week. Seems dumb but when Sanchez comes back Ozil gets less points...

Thanks for the input. The on,y way I can afford Lukaku in for Ighalo is downgrading Dawson to Targett or Toby to a 4.5m. I have considered Ozil to Sanchez.

This week could be the chance to add a little spice in your life by punting on a (c). I normally fly straight and narrow but the usual suspects all seem a bit dodgy.
Aguero- playing away where city struggle as a whole, also West Ham can beat anybody.
Lukaku- my original choice but after watching Swansea on Monday feel Ashley Williams could be well suited to deal with the threat. Also a new manager.
Kane- away at palace, could be a low scoring affair.mpalace aren't as bad as people make out.

Just trying to convince myself to go maverick and (c) firmino or something....

Ok I just can't make my mind up... Someone please help..

    Play ONE...

    A) Bellerin(CHE) - attacking full back, playing one of the most in form attacks, but they could always cancel each other out..

    B) Toby(cpl) - great attacking threat from CB, good defence, but away from home vs a good attacking side that will be looking to rediscover some form.

    C) Wollscheid(lei) - Stoke have been solid recently and Leicester are out of form, but they're still Leicester and Vahrez have been rested midweek..
