This Much We Know – Gameweek 25

There’s much to chew over from the weekend’s ten matches this Monday afternoon. Riyad Mahrez re-affirms his essential status, Mesut Ozil’s return to form keeps Alexis Sanchez on the backburner, Ronald Koeman returns to three at the back, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jesse Lingard and Wahbi Khazri stake a claim for our five-man midfields.

Mahrez remains locked in…
The Leicester winger rolled up to the Etihad on the back of just two assists in seven but returned to form in style on Saturday lunchtime, bagging a 14-point haul in the 3-1 win. Mahrez’ massive 64% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) continues to remain a deciding factor in our starting XIs – given his penchant for explosive returns (this was his tenth double-figure haul of the season), we can’t think about selling or even benching the Algerian in any given Gameweek for fear of a bumper haul forcing us down the overall standings.

City’s set-piece vulnerability is glaringly obvious…
With Vincent Kompany still sidelined, the City defence’s inability to deal with dead-ball situations was all too evident after Robert Huth notched twice in Leicester’s 3-1 win. Although Kompany is expected back soon, City’s upcoming schedule – a home clash with Spurs and trip to Anfield on either side of a blank – may well persuade those holding City defenders that it’s time to reconsider, with the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier pencilled in by many from Gameweek 27 onwards.

Lingard could end the fifth midfielder debate…
It’s three goals in the last five league fixtures for the United winger after yesterday’s opener at the Bridge. Lingard looks to have cemented a role in Louis van Gaal’s starting XI for the time being, starting every match from Gameweek 21 onwards on the right flank, and his output suggests the role is his to lose. At a price of just 4.2, he’s looking like the ideal cut-price fifth midfielder right now.

Ozil’s done enough to put Sanchez switch on hold…
A goal and two bonus points in Arsenal’s win at Dean Court ensured that the German’s 49% ownership will happily hold for now. Ozil headed into the weekend on the back of five blanks in six and with Alexis Sanchez offering an obvious alternative in the Gunners’ midfield, some had been eyeing up a straight swap for the explosive Chilean. For now, though, that trade looks on hold, with many likely to keep faith in Ozil and potentially miss out on a first big haul from Sanchez until he can prove himself again.

Canaries are in free-fall….
A 2-0 loss at Villa continued a dire run of results which now leaves Norwich sitting inside the bottom three. Alex Neil’s men have conceded 16 times over that period and, aside from their 5-4 home loss to Liverpool, have shown little attacking edge and netted once in the other four fixtures. With West Ham, Leicester, Chelsea and City in the next five, the Canaries are in danger of becoming whipping boys unless Neil can arrest their decline, with Dimitri Payet owners licking their lips ahead of the Hammers’ weekend trip to Carrow Road.

Liverpool always find a way to concede…
The Reds defence yet again let us down this Gameweek after blowing a 2-0 advantage at home to Sunderland with just eight minutes left on the clock. Although Jurgen Klopp’s side have now gone six matches without a shut-out, one look at the underlying numbers suggests how vulnerable they are right now. Liverpool have allowed their opponents just 15 shots inside the box over the last four Gameweeks – that’s fewer than any other side – yet they have conceded nine times, with questions again asked of Simon Mignolet’s showings between the sticks.

Butland can’t cope as Stoke’s one-man defence…
Despite another impressive display by Jack Butland, the Potters succumbed to a third straight 3-0 loss as Everton ran riot at the Britannia. With Ryan Shawcross still sidelined, Mark Hughes’ backline is looking a far cry from the solid unit that racked up seven clean sheets in nine league outings between Gameweeks 8 and 16. Certainly, a schedule that pits them against Bournemouth, Villa and Newcastle in the next three offers hope of a return to form but if Shawcross fails to recover, Butland’s save-point heroics may be as good as it gets for his 23% owners.

Sunderland are already dancing to Khazri’s tune…
Two assists in his first start for Sunderland suggests that Sunderland’s winter signing could yet keep them afloat. Khazri proved instrumental in the Black Cats’ comeback draw by teeing up Adam Johnson and Jermain Defoe, with the playmaker wasting no time in bringing his Ligue 1 form (five goals and seven assists in 20 appearances) to the table. At a price of 6.0, the Tunisian international is shaping up as another new face for us to consider for our five-man midfields.

Baggies’ goal famine is reaching critical levels…
A trip to injury-hit Newcastle seemed the perfect opportunity for West Brom to grab a vital win and boost their bid for survival. Although the Magpies were down to the bare bones at the back, Tony Pulis’ side once again failed to produce the goods and have now scored just once in the last four Gameweeks. Given that they’ve managed a mere two clean sheets in 15, the Baggies manager’s inability to strike a balance looks set to see them dragged into the relegation battle ahead of clashes with Everton, Leicester, United and Arsenal in the next five.

…and Watford aren’t faring any better…
It’s a similar story at Vicarage Road, with a 1-0 loss at Tottenham meaning that Watford have failed to score in four of the last five Gameweeks. Worryingly for Quique Sanchez Flores, his side – just like West Brom – failed to register a single shot on target at the weekend, with Odion Ighalo blanking for the fifth time in six. The Nigerian suffered his first price drop of the season last time out and with the fatigued Troy Deeney rested to the bench, Ighalo’s owners will surely be scouring the market for alternatives.

Pochettino won’t let us pick his full-backs…
Saturday’s clash with Watford once again saw Mauricio Pochettino successfully utilise his rotation tactic in the Tottenham full-back berths.
Since Gameweek 28, the Spurs boss has started Kyle Walker and weekend match-winner Kieran Tripper three and four times respectively at right-back, whilst on the left, Ben Davies has featured in the first XI on three occasions to Danny Rose’s four over the same period. With Jan Vertonghen still injured, it leaves only Toby Alderweireld – at 6.3 – as the one secure starter in the Spurs back-four right now.

…but Wenger is tempting us with Gabriel….
A 2-0 win at Bournemouth earned Arsenal a fifth clean sheet in seven yesterday afternoon. Having replaced the suspended Per Mertesacker for the recent FA Cup win over Burnley, Gabriel has remained ahead of the German in the pecking order and has now started the last three in all competitions, helping Arsene Wenger’s side to successive league shut-outs. At 4.3, the Brazilian’s minutes are clearly worth monitoring as a potential route into the league’s joint-second most resilient defence.

Dead-ball prowess has elevated Sigurdsson…
The Swansea playmaker’s recent renaissance shows no sign of slowing after he bagged a fifth goal in the last six Gameweeks at home to Palace. Sigurdsson’s expertly taken free-kick means he has scored three of those efforts via dead-ball situations, though, having netted spot-kicks against Sunderland and Everton. Although just seven of the Icelandic international’s 17 attempts during that period have arrived inside the area, his set-piece and penalty duties are keeping him firmly in the mix.

Koeman is sticking to his wing-backs experiment…
After the exploits of Fraser Forster earned Southampton a very fortuitous clean sheet in midweek, Ronald Koeman switched back to a three-man backline for the visit of West Ham. The 1-0 win took Southampton’s run to five straight shut-outs, emphasising the prospects of their chief protagonists at the back. Koeman’s decision also keeps Matt Targett’s Fantasy hopes alive for the time being. The youngster missed out with a minor injury at the weekend but, once recovered, he could reclaim that left wing-back berth, allowing Ryan Bertrand to return to the centre of defence once again.

On Schmeichel/Mahrez and soon to be Vardy here.

Still only three confirmed in that case. A West Ham win means one of NOR/mcy and LIV/che will survive, but if Liverpool win then they could both be off. West Ham's GW30 fixture would also go (despite them being knocked out) if Watford beat Leeds.

By who, some lumbering extra DM the opposition have? They'll get beat when they come up against a side with better players at whatever stage that is. If you want to make a team with your best players rather than fitting as many of your best players into a system as you can, then it'll be something like the above. Hodgson is flexible enough to do this. First English manager to not play 442 for a start. Think of all those years wasted with "Can Lampard and Gerard play together" when they could've found a system that works for both.

Guess the issue if the lack of width.

Despite his patchy form, Sterling is a very potent player and outlet - especially in international football.

Too attacking I'd say, even for a fun manager.

Needs a Henderson type in midfield to break up the play - and just think Delph is nowhere near good enough imo.

The big elephant in the room is Rooney obviously - if he was dropped it would make picking the team so much simpler, but he wont...so that's that really.

Not enough room for all 3 and you're right, Rooney will get played ahead of both.

      Should be something like:

      Hart/Forster
      Clyne - Jags - Smalling - Shaw (Gibbs/Rose/Bertrand)
      Henderson - Dier
      Walcott - Alli - Sterling
      Kane/Vardy

Problem is Walcott hasn't been playing as much recently so not sure he really deserves a start. Maybe Sterling on the right and Vardy on the left but then you're getting into OOP issues.

If we think Dier could cover the back 4 enough then perhaps Barkley in CM instead of Henderson but wouldn't be sure about that either.

Lots of choices for Roy to make

Agreed on that shape and team. Dier makes sense as an option if Hodgson tells the full backs to kick on forward. If not, he's a wasted player. Dier best sweeping and turning the defence into a back three.

He won't get picked, but currently England could do a lot worse than sticking Drinkwater in at defensive midfield.

In the group stages we can afford to be attacking - so potentially a diamond formation with two up top may work. Vardy has to be utilised off the bench if not though, will stretch the game and create so much space for Alli, Barkley etc

Vardy will be played out wide, I'm almost certain.

Such talents coming through into the England set up at the moment, and yet the management will scupper their potential to do well.

Might not be the absolutely worst option for Vardy out wide. Obviously not ideal but in far better form than any other winger we have and has the gas to play out there.

Just seen this, no, at the moment he is last on my bench 😆

Current defenders are VVD (swa), Azpi (NEW), Ward (WAT), Daniels (STO) and then Huth, hard to see how to fit him in!

I'm bringing in Lingard for Wijnaldum this week.

Sick of benching Alli / Mahrez points so they'll both definitely start now. And Lingard covers week 27 too.

Maybe, but probably not straight away. Moses will lose his before Antonio.

      Can see it being:

      Noble - Kouyate
      Antonio - Payet - Lanzini
      Carroll/Sakho

May be the odd occasion where Song or Obiang replace Antonio.

what went wrong for you in this season?

i see a lot of this site posters are not in top 10k like they used to be in every season before?

my rank is 450k and i am very dissipointed cause i've been playing like every year before where i had 3 top 10k finisshes and 2 top 50k , but now i just can't do anything about it

template scoring for fun and every time i try something different it ussualy backfire at me

my defenders and gk choices has been truly shocking this season ( 4 gk CS in whole season , Moreno, dawson, souare did nothing...)

also capitan choices , i've been switching from kane to kun i last 5 gws and every single time i managed to c wrong one

i dont panic yet and hoping for at least top 100k cause of wildcard , TC and BB combinated with dgws

also i'll try to C leader in poll no matter what cause my C expiriments has been shocking

still i quite enjoy this season

I've managed to claw my way back to just outside the top 100k, and still hold a slight hope of making it to the top 10k before seasons end.

I've had captain problems most of the season, and my DF has been pretty poor too. Another problem I've had is I have this amazing talent of selling a player just before he gets a massive haul (off the top of my head.....Sterling, Silva, Payet, Ighalo, Lukaku and many many more)

But the main reason I think is that the amount of interest in the game has risen generally, and the people finding this site and others has risen a lot. So these people we like to call 'casuals' are actually decent players now who know what they're doing and what DGW's and WC's are etc....

I've had just the opposite after a last season like yours this year. This GW broke into the 10k for first time ever (my 3rd season)...I think it has been mainly due to faith in Leicester, willing to captain the likes of Firmino/Mahrez/Vardy and sticking with Vardy, Kane, Ighalo until recent switch from Kane to Kun...jury still out on adding Alexis from Ozil ... and also cutting out quickly from the Hazards and all of Chelsea at the start of the season. Well, I think it is probably a bit of luck since I after GW1 I was 1.4 million, then steady uptick as people reacted slowly. I think a lot of luck, and the good info on this site!!

      Wish you good luck man!

Expensive defenders bringing in the points in the first half of the season and the template (Mahrez, Alli, Ighalo) being so strong since then that you'd have to nail captain selection almost every week to reel them back in. Well done to anyone on here that's in the top 10k but I would think the % of active FFSers there is much lower than in previous seasons

Horrible start coupled with quite the few captain blanks and weeks where i transfer out a midfielder after having 3-4 successive blanks, only for him to score the following GW.

However I still have all my chips, and I am leading 2/3 MLs, with the leader in the third having spent all his chips.

Hoping to claw my way into top 10k (158k now)

It seems every year there are more dedicated players.

But still; i found it hard to make significant progress and hovered around 100k before moving to about 10k after 4 good weeks.

The main point, I think, is that a lot of those in the top 10k are there falsely. They have used chips and will be reigned in with dgws and others use of chips.

This year will have the most change in rankings at the top within the last 10gws I reckon, which means those who have muddled through and held their chips, staying patient, will end up where they belong.

      Keep on going mate!

The template has been very cheap. Last season, we had to pick Hazard, Aguero, Sanchez, Ivanovic/Baines and the determiner of success was how well you could pick the rest of the midfield on a tight budget. This season, the entire 'template' has been ridiculously easy to copy because it's only cost 90% of our budget.

Getting too excited by small little samples of results (Saints early form, C Palace clean sheets, Aguero early season) and then not changing quick enough.

I still can't work out whether it's a season of fixtures or form.

Either way, doubt I'll reach the same heights of previous seasons.

Slow start and delaying the WC. Should've got on board with the early bandwagons.
But it's getting better atm and I'm confident I'll finish the season better than I started.

Tried to be too clever, and benched Mahrez/Ozil in "tricky fixtures"

Aside from that, i can't complain with how it's gone. Think it's been similar to most seasons. Main difference has been the cheaper players being such viable, consistent captaincy options, while the likes of Aguero and Sanchez have so often disappointed.

Benched Mahrez 2 times, benched Sinclair with 2 goals, didn't have Utd and City defence at the start of the season, many captain fails.

Last season, my rank was 2071.

You've literally just described my season.

My failures have been captain choices and as usual not enough points coming from my defence.

At 700k at the moment my lowest finish is 60k and I've 3 finishes in top 2k so fairly hard to take at the moment.

Hoping my wildcard, triple captain and bench boost plans send me into the top 100k by the end of the season as finishing outside top 100k will be embarrassing.

From GW 1- a lot of poor picks but what has really killed me has been my poor Captain Picks..
Very few big successes and not even enough decent returns.

      Sticking with Martial didnt help..
      Wijnaldum/Kane.. bad timing.
Sold Cech which wasnt a great move either.

      - Starting season with 3x Southampton due to good preseason
      - Not learning from above failure and brining Mane in again after purple patch
      - Too late on bringing in Lukaku, Vardy and Ighalo
      - Failure to bring in decent goalkeeper - brought in Myhill after WBA's good start, only for him to deliver a series of 2 pointers
      - Poor captain choices

My season was going fantastically, got to 11k by GW13. After that, I couldn't break the top 10k, yet never fell below 50k, I just stagnated. Last weekend it all went wrong - sold Lukaku, benched Mahrez, captained Kane - and I fell from 33k to 68k. Not bad compared to some, but really disappointing having been in such a strong position.

So it's beginning to slip away now but I managed to have a decent OR for a good portion of the season despite avoiding the Mahrez and Vardy party until the end. That's probably cost me my leagues.
It was mostly stubbornness and expecting LEI to be found out in playing style, I AM A FOOL!

Coupled with really poor choice of Captain almost every week.

Still within reach of the top 100k so will be hoping for a strong use of the chips to eat into the points gap.

I'm learning each year how important it is to get a good start.
I started the season with both Walcott and Hazard along with more Chelsea.

Also took to long to get on the Mahrez and Vardy train.

After 4 years playing and ever increasing rank until last season my first top 10k like a lot of people round here I was confident for this season. Here though are some reasons why I think people are having it tough. There are some general faults that are the same for every season such as not jumping on bandwagon's quick enough or untimely injuries but here's some i think are specific to this season and/or the FFS community.

-The implosion of Chelsea: Who could have predicted Chelsea would have such a torrid season, especially the first half. Some might argue signs were there but for many last season's champions made up their pre and early season backbone eg: Hazard, Costa & a defender.

      - Believing the template must eventually crumble. Maybe the best players at the start of the season will be the best player come the end, a rarity but this is the season of exceptions.

      - Placing so much value in differentials when the form players are still scoring eg: The ill fated Ramsey bandwagon. A symptom of the above point

      - Projecting our desires combined with previous season's performances onto players. The mid season Hazard resurgence is a good example and to a point the Sanchez good will at present. Just because a premium player did well last season and we really want them to perform again doesn't mean it will happen.

      - The three clean sheet false dawn: Clean sheets have been hard to predict, several team have gone on good short turn runs such as West Ham and Swansea only to go back to being leaky.

"Season long, Liverpool have saved 57.6% of the on target shots they have faced compared to a league average of 69.4%. This is a lower rate than Bournemouth, who have had a horrific season preventing chances and goals and is lower than any full team season recorded over the last six years. We can make it look worse by looking at Klopp’s era (56.0%) or taking it just to Anfield (48.5%). No wonder home fans are frustrated; they are witnessing it right now and in front of their very eyes."

It's how you defend the shots you do concede. Positioning, getting blocks in, making it difficult for the attacker etc

I generally like xG and xA for more info on quality of chances, but even those models can't paint a full picture. The models usually just take into account position of the shot, not the number, positions etc of defenders that surround the attacking player.

There will be outliers in this model- and Liverpool are one- and the question is why? Trying to work out why the stats lie sometimes can give you more info than the raw numbers themselves.

I think mainly Mignolet is at fault like you say, but the quality of their defending in and around the area leaves a lot to be desired.

I think it's a combination of both? Mignolet and a very weak defence. They get played around quite easily and both the goals they conceded against Sunderland could and should have been prevented. Defoe turned too easily for his goal and Mignolet horrible keeping when AJ scored.

Nice research there. What could have been if they had a Butland or a Cech at the back.

only going on watching as a migs owner, but they do seem to prevent teams having hopeful pot shots that allow keepers to mount up 6-7 saves. But seem to give away a lot of space in box that allows opponents to get much more scoreable chances.
I reckon the full backs along with lack of mid cover out wide has a lot to do with it.

In my mini leagues alot of folks are switching to 4 or even 5 at the back, and they seem to be doing well 10-15 more points than average in the mini league.
Is it that time of the season to switch it from attacking to defence?

Goes well its at least 30 points (5 players), however goes wrong its 5 points.
