Rarely has the ScoutCast witnessed the collision of such contrary forces. With the radical “Andy G” dropping in alongside the self-proclaimed “dullard” Fantasy Manager, Jonty, we were always going to be in for an entertaining ride.

Foxes fan Andy arrives to express his emotions with both Leicester and his Fantasy Premier League lineup riding high. We look back on his implausible captaincy of Riyad Mahrez back in Gameweek 1, whilst picking out the highlights of Andy’s rip-roaring “maverick” season.

Another round of questions from you, the community, has us attempting to unpick the looming double Gameweek scenarios, whilst “Andy M” takes time to dispel the template myth. The four of us then turn our attentions to Gameweek 30, with beatnik boss Andy G revealing his rebellious streak with some crazy transfer talk.

This episode of the ScoutCast was first shown live via our YouTube channel on Wednesday. Be sure to subscribe for details of future episodes.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I can field 11 players this GW, but have 2 FT. Where could I use one of them instead of it going to waste?

    Forster
    Alderweireld Wollscheid Simpson Daniels
    Mahrez Alli Sigurdsson
    Kane Vardy Aguero

    Hennessey*, Bellerin*, Ozil*, Payet*

That's my problem with him - early games is not so productive for captaincy this season. Much more gained from MNF and latest TV games on Sat and Sun at all... Was on Kun till I realised that Norwich still have a chance to avoid relegation and this could be really tight game.

Still unsure if Silva or YYT is the best Sanchez replacement. Just get the feeling Silva gives more an effort, which with the fixtures and position of City in the table (i.e.chasing) will lead to more points.

Looks good, assuming City get a DGW34, not 37. Think about Defoe instead of Ighalo. Better form and fighting to stay up. Ighalo shows nothing atm.

For me Defoe or Ighalo/Deeney all depends on wether it's Sunderland or Watford that has a game in GW35. Your bench will be full of the Payets and Ozils and Lukakus and a couple of defenders.

As I'm about to restart my junior management duties this weekend another "state of the game" post as respite from DGW posts. A bit long but maybe of interest to folk.

Junior football from grass roots right through to the best academies has a major problem that has held football back for years. We choose to accept players into teams based on their birthdays falling in a calendar year that runs from 1st Sept > 31st August. This obviously means some players are damned near a full year younger than other players.

    Does it matter ?

Well yes...it means that some players appear to be better players than others when in fact they are only more mature.
The obvious scenario then rears it's head of the scout appearing at a junior footy match and recruiting a player who appears to be the best player on the pitch for his academy..forgetting the fact that he is simply (maybe) just the older, more mature player. The younger players get far fewer chances and the English game by passes a massive pool of talent.

So a stat. Currently the number of players in premier league academies with birthday's from ranging from Sept > Nov is 45%. The number of players with birthday's from June > August stands at 10%

The solution is a process called Bio banding that was first used by Southampton (and look how that's working)...Here's an article on the whole thing... http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/news/2015-16/sep/170915-premier-league-bio-banding-helping-late-developers.html

It's a terrible couple of stats though that show just how naïve our scouting system is.

My team is quite small, and young, so every now and again we get thumped by the big lads. I'm forever having to reassure them. We have some great players who will all fall into this trap.

Brighton Council, in the days we had one of biggest play departments around.
Based around holiday schemes from a few hours support to voluntary and community groups to Summer long sites run by our own staff.
I did a lot of training for incoming staff and the logistics for all our sites and the short one or two day community support venues.

Most of the sport side was special needs and over 50s.

My Birhday is 26/8 was the youngest in the school for first year but from the second year I got to play in my year and year below, not sure if that was legal or not. Luckily I was never that small but a couple of teammates were.

Not sure if it's legal with the FA league...in fact I know it isn't. As a manager I would agree that it was right..completely agree...At the other end the oldest (and biggest?) lad in your year should have played a few games with the year above to stretch his development as well.

      Very interesting.
It does highlight a very poor state of the game at that age where physical stature is so important, it seems almost medieval and archaic approach to scouting that's being reflected in your stats.

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 9 months ago

Yep. The next time you have a conversation about why we get so few David Silva's and Mata's produced in this country you'll know the answer.

The problem is further compounded by the state of the pitches we play on as the strength of the older lads opens the gap even wider on heavy pitches...particularly the closer they get to full maturity.

it reminds me of watching england schoolboys when we seemed to just put the biggest lads in the team. they then got given the runaround by the smaller younger technical continentals. to be honest not much has changed in that respect since hungary battered us 3-6 at wembley and showed us how to play the game. 66 aside - a cup won by true english grit and heart - we have been behind the times ever since.

Most sports have problems like this. As a cyclist I was always the youngest in my age category, if I was born 2 days later I'd have been treated as if I was a whole year younger.

Instead of racing against people a few days or weeks younger than me, I was up against people 11 months older. It's a lottery.

This is a common feature in most sports I think and is robust against all kinds of cut-offs (school year, calender year etc...). I remember reading studies about this for football, baseball etc.

One important issue is what you highlight, with the scouting, and how kids born "at the right time" are more likely to be picked up into PL academies, but an often forgotten side is the motivation for kids to keep competing. When kids are grouped according to a date cut-off instead of Bio banding, the younger, smaller kids often lose motivation after a few years of not being able to compete with the best in their group, and drop out even before they have a chance of being scouted in the first place.

I completely support Bio banding both to stimulate the development and also the motivation of kids in their early years as an athlete.

Definately Clyne. But he's more expensive than the likes of Sakho and Moreno, and has little attacking threat and gets no bonus points. But definately nailed on to play both games.

Maybe Skrtel? Just returning from injury, should be fit and "firing" by then.

Only issue I can see is Flanagan maybe coming in for 1 of the games at the expense of either Moreno/Clyne. Skrtel could be a good shout actually.

I know. It's why I scupper my season to begin with, it can take over. Every season I start with the intention of taking a hit a week because I really don't want it to be "serious"...I only bother with how I'm doing against my lads and that won't ever change.

I like the banter of footy and FPL first and foremost. I've done well in a couple of games lately...The WC last year when I got up to 13th and UFPL this year where I'm around the 30 OR. It becomes a bit of a head mash tbh.

Damn I usually like jonyy he's a decent skin but having just watched the scoutcast, I absolutely hate his view on mimicking a rivals team just to win.
Most of the fun of FPL is watching a match with mates and cheering when you're guys do well and getting an earful when your friend's players do something. Mimicking and blocking a rival literally removes any fun or skill from the game and the eventual (boring) victory won't feel half as sweet either

    1. Bibelnissen

It doesn't remove any skill. Not blocking a rivals team just for the sake of having different players is poor strategy, IMO, and therefore little skill.

Also skill is what got you into the position where you're able to block and defend in the first place.

FPL with a WC every week like the Scout Picks would make it impossible. Need to cut rivals good differentials if leading.

The thing about matching a rivals good players is that it helps you to win the game - which is to come top of mini-leagues for many. Of course you can't just do that - the real test is making sure you have differentials in place that your rivals don't own.

So for example this weekend if I was chasing someone and they already had Alli, TobyA and Kane I'd get Eriksen in as I know they can't get him and he could do really well.

Matching good players, getting in differentials are both equally important to mini-league victory. I've won both my cash ones every year for the last five years by using this tactic - which is around £150 to £200 a year. When I spent my winnings one year on a new Fender telecaster - now that was fun. 🙂

You want to play nice and fun, by all means. But don't hit someone for playing to win, because if it involves money then all the more it's important to win rather than have fun.

It is a wonderful tactic as long as it helps in winning. Full stop. Don't add all this rubbish about having fun. FPL is about winning first, then having fun second.

So many posts here saying "I'm out to win, not have fun", I'm baffled by those comments..!

It's an online GAME that we all voluntarily play. Why do we play? Because it's a fun way to spend our time. Something to chat about at the pub. Something to rib your friends over. Competition yes, but just like any game/sport it was invented as a fun way to spend time as well as learn a few new skills along the way.

Regardless of if you think this tactic sucks the fun out of FPL or not (personally I know a couple of friends who love doing this to other people in our ML and torturing them), I certainly think that people who are saying that FPL "Is about winning, not having fun" are missing the point big time. What an over-serious way to look it 😛 !

Picture this: You're first in the world, i.e. OR is 1, in gameweek 37. You're ahead of 2nd place by 20 pts. You know he has your exact squad but has Sanchez whereas you have Ozil. You also have enough in the bank to do Ozil to Sanchez.
If you can tell me that you won't block by getting Sanchez, then you're either lying to me or yourself. It's a strategy that is a part of the game and it does require skill. It definitely does not take away from the fun aspect

Have not led in my ML for years, always been 2nd or 3rd and chased. Play my own game till GW 34/35 after which take differential risks.

First time this year have led since GW 13/15. And havent looked at my league once, been doing my own thing, getting a decent OR.

Its my rivals headache to choose a good player who will score well at the same time not be in my team.

    Morning DZ, whatcha reckon?

    A) Hennessey -> Lloris
    B) Save

Based on my current squad of 7 potential GW34 DGWers, I can still get 11 DGWers for GW34 with 4 FTs after this week. B gives a bit more flexibility and a potential fixer for the GW35 blanks though. If WCing in GW33 then A) to Lloris (or even Butland) looks a no brainer.

    Elliot
    Kompany, Wolly, Simpson
    Yaya, Mahrez. Alli, Arnie
    Aguero, Kane, Vardy

    Hennessey, Sanchez, Bellerin, JEvans

The dullard in me says B, the maverick in me says A. I think A gives you a better chance of a clean sheet and those points could offset any hit you subsequently take if injury or suspension would stop you fielding 11 DGWers in GW34.

    Butland (McCarthy)
    Kompany, Huth, Berty, (Bellerin, Oxford)
    Mahrez, Arnie, Alli (Alexis, Barkley)
    Kun, Kane, Vardy
A: Thinking of getting rid of Alexis for Yaya or Siggy then WC GW33 to BB15 in DGW34
B: Get rid of Oxford to get a 5th playing DEF to maximise players for GW34 and blank 35 so I can save WC for GW36.
Leaning towards A as I can then TC Kun in DGW37 (if it happens then) as City have a better fixture than potential DGW34
