Our attentions are focused firmly on the upcoming round of fixtures as we prepare for the final double Gameweek of 2016/17. Eden Hazard’s return to favour, Jermain Defoe’s home form, West Ham’s approach to their final two fixtures at Upton Park, Claudio Ranieri’s tactics with the title in the bag and Tottenham’s response to Monday’s collapse at Chelsea all make our lunchtime menu.

The Hazard revival…

Named amongst the subs at home to Spurs after bagging a brace at Bournemouth, the Belgian emerged from the bench with a title-deciding goal that brings him back onto our radars in time for the double. Hazard’s dazzling second-half display looks set to see him unleashed from the start at Sunderland this Saturday and with a trip to Liverpool’s unconvincing defence in midweek, he’s even crept up to second in our Captain Poll. Can he carry on that momentum as he looks to build confidence ahead of this summer’s Euros or will we be burned again by a player that scored just once in the first 35 Gameweeks?

Defoe’s home improvements…

A late leveler at Stoke took the Sunderland striker’s tally to 14 goals for the season, with ten of those arriving in his last 11 away appearances. Earlier this week, Big Sam acknowledged that the Black Cats’ style of play is best-suited to Defoe on his travels – indeed, the striker has notched just three times at the Stadium of Light by comparison. With their survival on the line ahead of back-to-back visits from Chelsea and Everton, though, the Wearsiders need the veteran to step up in front of his own fans if they’re to have any chance of clambering clear of the drop zone.

The Hammers’ goodbye to Upton Park…

Having scored at least twice in each of their last seven league outings, West Ham have pushed their way to the forefront of many Fantasy managers’ double Gameweek plans. The emotion and motivation of the upcoming week, which sees them play their final two matches at Upton Park, has merely added to our enthusiasm with the likes of Dimitri Payet, Mark Noble and Andy Carroll amongst this week’s top targets. After years of Big Sam playing the percentages, Bilic will be well aware that the fans want to see their side bow out in style in the “West Ham†way and goals look on the menu again as Swansea and United prepare to pay visit.

Ranieri’s approach with the title in the bag…

The past few months have seen Leicester tighten up on their way to the title, with a raft of clean sheets vital to their success. Having clinched the crown on Monday as a result of Tottenham’s draw at Chelsea, Claudio Ranieri’s men now have the chance to go on the offensive once again and celebrate their triumph in style. With Danny Drinkwater banned and Robert Huth facing an FA charge, will the Italian go on the front foot and allow Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy to run riot or will he stick to the usual plan A as Everton roll up to the King Power?

Norwich’s need for a talisman…

The Canaries are one of a few sides with everything still to play for ahead of home clashes against United and Watford. Whilst relegation rivals Newcastle and Sunderland have Andros Townsend and Jermain Defoe to thanks for their upturn in form, Alex Neil’s side have failed to score in each of the last three Gameweeks. It’s all or nothing now for the Carrow Road outfit and they look more reliant than ever for the likes of Robbie Brady, Nathan Redmond and Dieumerci Mbokani to step up and prevent a tumble into the Championship.

Van Gaal’s team sheets ahead of Wembley…

United’s pair of road trips look promising from an attacking perspective, with upcoming hosts Norwich and West Ham anything but resilient at the back. Nonetheless, as we saw in their previous double Gameweek after Anthony Martial was afforded a 15-minute sub appearance at home to Villa, Louis van Gaal is clearly keen to rest and rotate with one eye on the FA Cup as he looks to end the season with silverware. Subject to over 42,000 transfers in so far, Martial is the most sought-after striker in FPL this week but his manager’s tinkering clearly has the potential to dent United’s Fantasy prospects prior to their Wembley meet with Palace.

Tottenham’s morale…

Monday night’s capitulation at the Bridge leaves Mauricio Pochettino’s men licking their wounds ahead of a crucial home clash with Southampton that’s vital to their prospects of finishing second. A total of nine cautions against Chelsea, allied with an FA charge that’s likely to see Mousa Dembele join Dele Alli in the stands due to suspension, suggests that the cracks are starting to show at White Hart Lane. With Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose both doubts and Harry Kane’s record of one goal in nine league matches with Dembele on board more than a little alarming, is it time to bail on Pochettino’s regulars or do they have the mettle to overcome their title disappointment?

Townsend against Villa’s defence…

Last weekend’s free-kick winner against Palace took the Newcastle wide man’s tally to three goals and two assists in the last six matches. Townsend looks a man transformed under the guidance of Rafa Benitez and has almost single-handedly dragged them out of the drop zone to the brink of safety. With rivals Sunderland still holding a match in hand, however, the Magpies will turn to their winter signing once again as they look to take advantage of Villa’s dire defence and get another three points on the board.

The Saints’ momentum…

After putting four past Villa and City in the last two Gameweeks, Southampton sit just three points behind fifth-placed United ahead of their final two fixtures. Ronald Koeman’s recent decision to dump Graziano Pelle and instead utilise Shane Long as the lone striker has added greater mobility to a transformed Saints’ attack, with Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane also racking up the points out wide. As Spurs attempt to recover from Monday’s setback, can the Saints heap further misery on their former manager as they step up their late bid for a Europa League slot?

Pellegrini’s last Etihad hurrah…

Last night’s loss at the Bernabeu has ensured there’s no fairytale ending to Manuel Pellegrini’s tenure at the Etihad. Instead, the Chilean is handed a home match against Arsenal on Sunday that his side must win to overtake the Gunners into third spot and place themselves in pole position for an automatic Champions League slot for 2016/17. After ringing the changes for St Mary’s last week, the outgoing manager must surely roll out the big guns as City look to clinch a vital victory in Pellegrini’s final home match in charge.

Sturridge’s minutes…

At a time when rest and rotation seems the order of the day under Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool frontman’s run of six starts in the last seven bodes well for his double Gameweek pitch time. Sturridge – who scored off the bench in his one sub appearance over that spell – seems one of the few players almost immune to Klopp’s domestic tinkering and has racked up five goals and an assist during that time frame. Can he emerge as a valid option for our three-man frontlines or will the Anfield manager’s team sheets render the Merseysiders a no-go area once again?

    Haven't watched much Chelsea recently, so those who have some knowledge of how they've been lining up, do Pedro and Hazard coexist, or is it one or the other with Fabregas?

    I have Pedro and am trying to figure out who else to get for a double up. Cheers.

      I think the Chelsea double up is a bad idea. And Pedro could be in danger...

        Agree with everything you said, which is why I am trying to salvage something out of that spot -- I don't want to drop him, so I am trying to figure out who to pair him with.

      Willian has been in recently i think Hazard was due to injury, mid 3 of Hazard, Wilian and Pedro with Fab in the pivot 2.

        Would you say Fabregas and Hazard are the most secure?

          I disagree with the Hazard/Willian/Pedro lineup. They're all better suited to wing positions and we more often have either Oscar or Fabregas, or even Loftus-Cheek now, in that #10 role. It will be a bit of a guessing game at this point since Oscar is rumoured to be leaving so he may not get as much time.

          Hazard was just rested first half last game due to his recent return so he should be nailed from here on. Fabregas always seems to be nailed thanks to his passing and versatility.

    A) Payet + Deeney (-8) [8 Dgwers]

    B) Carroll + Sanchez (-4) [7 Dgwers]

            A) would get me:

            Smalling*, Cresswell*, Simpson;

            Payet(TC)*, Mahrez, Lanzini*, Hazard*;

            Deeney*, Aguero, Defoe(VC)*

            Looks OK doesn't it? I worry about losing Kane, but I have to downgrade him or Kane to afford Payet+Hazard

    Looking for a differential striker to close a 20pt gap, rival has Caroll so can rule him out.

    Currently got Aguero, Deeney and Sturridge.

    Equivalent bans for an elbow and a hair pull. It doesn't feel right to me.

      Can't condone what Afro did (esp as he has previous), but you have to acknowledge that Huth pulling his hair (what's up with that by the way?) led to the elbowing. So I think an equal ban is fair in this case.

      1. foley_fd
        • 11 Years

        Not sure why the length of a ban for an offence such as a hair pull should be linked to whether it provoked a reaction or not.

      Tough one. Afroman has previous and a stray elbow could easily break a nose/ jaw. Remember Berkamp breaking Lomas nose in his playing days. Pulling hair wouldn't do such damage but was this action that led to retaliation and the catalyst.

      When there is a cause, there is an effect. You have to issue a ban on the person creating the cause as well otherwise it would be unfair to ban just the person who did the effect.

      1. foley_fd
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 2 months ago

        I disagree, for two reasons:

        1. I am not saying Huth shouldn't be banned - just questioning that the ban is equivalent to Fellaini's.

        2. So if the cause was saying 'you are a smelly man', would there still be justification for a 3 game ban? How about if the cause was pointing & laughing?

        I'm being facetious, but it hopefully helps put across my bemusement at the idea that provoking someone means you should share in the punishment, no matter how out of proportion the reaction is.

          Facetious indeed

          It's simple. The panel judge each case on it's own merit. If Huth had indeed called Afro a smelly man and then he elbowed him in the face breaking his nose. The bans would have been very different I'm sure.

          But it was six of one, half a dozen of another in this particular case

          1. foley_fd
            • 11 Years
            10 years, 2 months ago

            In which case, you are deeming a hair pull and an elbow as equivalent - and so the fact it's 'cause and effect' becomes irrelevant.

            I don't. I think they're very different things with very different potential outcomes.

            If you believe they are comparable, that's your opinion - no problem.

            But it doesn't make the 'cause and effect' comment any less bemusing to me. Ultimately it's irrelevant as to who did what first. They are treated as separate pieces of behaviour and punished accordingly.

            1. thegaffer82
              • 14 Years
              10 years, 2 months ago

              Disagree that they are treated as seperate pieces of behaviour. That's not how the FA (or even a court of law) do things at all in cases like this.

              Each case on it's merit. No need for a blanket rule or severity barometer for every offence. Everything is on camera and can be viewed several times with all causes and consequences catered for.

              Just my two cents anyway

              1. foley_fd
                • 11 Years
                10 years, 2 months ago

                They are treated separately in the sense that how the offence is categorised depends entirely on the offence - not what led to it.

                Ultimately it's irrelevant whether you are provoked or not, and it's irrelevant whether you provoked someone or not.

                The issue here is that violent conduct carries a three game ban, so it's relatively standard to issue both with a three game ban, despite most people (in my world anyway) concluding that an elbow is worse than a hair pull.

                I don't believe for a minute that Huth's ban is linked to the fact that it provoked a reaction.

    Seemingly obvious answers but the DGW is certainly messing with my head - hunting a ML leader (25pts). 1FT

    To fund Iwobi -> Hazard:

    A) Kane -> Defoe (-4)
    B) Aguero -> Carroll (-4)

    Additionally Aguero out could also be used to upgrade Rose -> Cresswell (-8)

    Would give me this front 7 for the DGW:

    Sanchez Payet Hazard Townsend
    Sturridge Kane/Aguero Defoe/Carroll

    Any insight if Klopp will rotate Migs again or if Howard will get a game despite both being away?

      Mignolet.

      Not an expert, but I understand from people around here that both may face rotation.

      If that's the case, I'd err on the side of Mignolet, as he has two home games, and Liverpool have a somewhat better defence than Everton.

    1FT, 1.4m ITB. I'm abit stuck, any ideas?

    Robles*

    Sanchez Payet* Lanzini* Firmino* (Coutinho*)
    Aguero Kane Defoe*

      Same 7 as me (Firmino/Mahrez).

      I'm chasing and looking at Kane> Sturridge and Coutinho>Fabregas. Benching Sanchez wont feel great though.

    In order to afford Alli & Kane -> Hazard & Carroll, which downgrade is best?

    A) Rose -> Bassong (5th def)
    B) Mahrez -> Kouyate (5th mid)
    C) Aguero -> Sturridge

    1. RustyBz

      A or C (if he starts both games)

    Robles Darlow owners.... What are we doing for DGW? Robles has been a total disaster. The only good thing he's done was get dropped to ensure everyone got Darlow's big haul.

    It's gotta be Darlow v Villa even in the knowledge Robles will probably play both games in 37 hasn't it?

      Not sure. Been on Darlow for a while now, but don't think I will be able to resist the lure of a DGW come Saturday

      Robles got 14 points GW33, hardly a disaster. Playing Robles.

      people like you shoud be banned.

      You come here saying this like that without even knowing!! How come has Robles been a disaster? He has been Everton´s best player.. If Liverpool didnt score 10 goals was because of him.

      And he wasnt dropped. Martinez said Howard was going to play the last two home games in order to honour him for his Everton´s career.

      Robles is playing the away games.

        Banned. Lol. Slight over-reaction there I think.

        Robles has been a disaster not because of his personal form. More that he's playing in a shambolic DF that doesn't keep clean sheets. Then he got dropped for home games....

      I'm considering Robles > DDG for a hit. Weighing up which will score better over the season:

      a) Robles (lei, sun) & Darlow (TOT) +4
      b) DDG (nor, whu, BOU)

    Start 2:
    1) Kane (who's without Dembele)
    2) Mané (against a Dembele-less side)
    3) Mahrez (who has just 3 attempts on target in 4 weeks)

      Williams and Sigurdsson both out for Swansea this weekend. Could be a cricket score for the hammers.

    My rival in head to head league have him. Currently my def is weak for this DGW (Bellerin, Simpson, Cresswell, Gabriel, Souare). What to do?

    I'm playing wc and just struggling with midfield.

    Currently looking at

    Hazard Payet Fabregas Milner (Sánchez)

    Milner could be Firm/Cout but what do you reckon?
