Team of the Season – Mesut Ozil

Limited to just 22 appearances in an injury-hit 2014/15, Mesut Ozil was priced at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after managing a mere four goals and six assists. The Arsenal midfielder went into the previous campaign firmly in the shadow of Alexis Sanchez but took his game to a new level, racking up six goals and 19 assists to clinch the final midfield spot in our Team of the Season, with 11% of the votes.

The Statistics

Ozil kicked off the season in steady yet unspectacular fashion, notching three assists in his first six appearances. The former Real Madrid midfielder then embarked on a spectacular run of form between Gameweeks 8 and 17, scoring two goals and bagging 12 assists, averaging 8.9 points per game (ppg) over that stretch. That led to his value peaking at 10.0 by Gameweek 20, though Ozil failed to replicate that form over the rest of the campaign and went on to blank in 13 of his final 19 matches.

The Arsenal playmaker ended the season as the fourth highest scoring player in FPL with 200 points, while he ranked as the second highest scoring midfielder behind Riyad Mahrez (240 points). Ozil led all players for assists, with 19, having only managed a best of 10 in his two previous Premier League seasons, while he created a chance every 21.9 minutes this term, better than any other player in the league.

One of the more surprising aspects regarding Ozil’s output this season was his penchant for racking up double-figure hauls, totalling eight over the course of the campaign. That was helped by an ability to hoover up the bonus points, accruing 30 over the course of the season, ranking him joint-third among all players, bettered only by Mahrez (38) and Harry Kane (33).

The German international’s average of 5.7 ppg was only trumped by Mahrez (6.5) among midfielders, while he ranked joint-fourth for ppg among all players who featured in at least five matches, with team-mate Sanchez just behind on 5.6 ppg.

The Prospects

Having enjoyed his most productive season by far in English football, Ozil looks poised to become one of the highest priced midfield options across the Fantasy games as we head into 2016/17.

A hike to around the 10.0 mark looks likely, though bearing in mind that Sanchez seems set to come in at no more than 11.0 as a result of his relatively disappointing 167-point haul, the German – whose ownership rose over 50% last year – will struggle to remain such a popular pick.

After a dire first few months of the season, Sanchez scored or assisted in eight of his final ten appearances in a new role on the right before being shifted back to the left for the Gameweek 38 win over Villa. If he can continue in the same vein, it’s fair to say that Ozil faces a tough task to oust the Chilean in our Fantasy affections.

Although Ozil remains top dog in terms of creativity, Sanchez’ goal threat is far more convincing. Despite missing eight matches in 2015/16, the former Barcelona man led the way for total attempts (107) and efforts in the box (72) amongst midfielders, producing more than double Ozil’s numbers (47 and 32) in over 600 minutes’ less pitch time.

Whilst Ozil and Sanchez look the only two nailed-on options for Arsene Wenger in the final third, there’s the hope that Alex Iwobi could continue the progress that saw him start eight of the Gunners’ final nine league outings. With Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also vying for pitch time out wide, though, few will be prepared to take an early punt early on.

With less of a price difference between them, Sanchez’ eye for goal may well make him the go-to man at the Emirates next time around. It would be remiss to rule Ozil out altogether but, should a value option emerge, either in the final spot in Arsenal’s attacking midfield slots or up front – depending on Wenger’s ability to find an upgrade for the erratic Olivier Giroud – the German may have to surpass last year’s output to remain prominent in our plans.

    Hello,

I'm not sure on which set of players to choose from. In the first set I had lewondowski. However after downgrading him to milik (I also have grosicki). I was able to change around other areas.

Which set of players would you choose?

    First set
    1. Kozacik (Slovakia gk)
    2. Lopes ( Portugal gk doesn't start)
    3. Lewondowski
    4. Arnautovic
    5. Hector
    6. Denayar
    7. Payet

    Second set

    1. De gea
    2. Patricio
    3. Milik
    4. Griezzman
    5. Alaba
    6. Boateng
    7. Leicensteiner.

Yes. Especially when I have grosicki in addition to milik. Has anyone else considered this approach to cover not having lewondowski?

It's also important to note. Poland and Germany play on the same day. So if you have Mueller..its either him or lewondowski for the captaincy. This is where I started rearranging...

I've gone back to lew and dropped muller out, planning on transferring lew > muller for the 3rd game

I'm not going with Lewandowski as I consider Muller more important and I'd like to have the option to change captaincy between 'big hitters'. They play in the same group so that's not possible.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Leicester's perfect storm. Who's next?

During 2015/16 Leicester enjoyed a perfect storm of circumstances which helped them achieve Premier League glory.

    1. Injury free - while many other teams were blighted by injuries Leicester's key stars finished largely unscathed. A testament to their fitness and training programme perhaps?
    2. A good manager - Ranieri knew what he was doing and his tactical shift to shore up defence mid season was significant in taking them over the line and making them tough to beat.
    3. No Europe - without European distractions, as Southampton had early on and Liverpool had later on, Leicester could focus on the Premier League from start to finish.
    4. A new way of playing - it sounds simple, but their lack of possession play and swift counter attack is not usually the mark of Premier League champions. Their opponents were caught off guard, time and time again.
    5. The other title contenders faltered to unprecedented levels. Manchester United's lack of attack, Chelsea's dire early season, Arsenal's mid season malaise and Manchester City's faltering form meant that there was no consistent threat to their title bid.

Taking all that on board who do you think has a chance of Premier League success next season? Which teams and players do you think will be the next Leicester and next Vardy, Mahrez and Fuchs for Fantasy managers?

With no European distractions Chelsea and Liverpool are firmly on my radar. For Liverpool Firmino's goal involvement looks very appealing. If Chelsea recruit another striker that player looks another who could do well. Elsewhere Mourinho at Manchester United fulfills the good manager tag - he knows how to win titles.

If City recruit well, they will be my favourites for the title. Their core of Hart, Bad K, Yaya and Kun is hard to surpass. It will be theirs to lose again imo.

They certainly fulfill the 'good manager' requirement of the perfect storm. He knows how to win titles.

Injuries is something Man City really need to address though - and off loading some of their oldies will probably help. They are constantly restricted though by relying on an injury prone Aguero. If he stays fit the storm is looking good for Man City.

Agree that they are favourites if they recruit well. Disagree with their core being hard to surpass, Hart isn't the force he used to be. Kompany is always injured these days, Yaya doesn't even try anymore and looks like he might be on his way out and as good as Aguero is he will always pick up injuries too. I agree that as it stands their core is better than the rest don't get me wrong, just feel that it's not that hard to surpass

Injuries again makes the perfect storm tough for Arsenal each season. Also I wonder with Wenger whether they have a manager capable of winning the title again. Mourinho, Pep, now Ranieri know how to win titles. With European competition they need a fit squad.

Liverpool will be dangerous with no European football at all. As I would imagine will Chelsea - honestly don't know much about Conte but he's inheriting a very good squad

I think United will be solid if Mourinho takes over. I also can't see him taking the Europa League seriously so until Feb at least I would see them as a team without European football

Everton could be another one if they get the appointment right

Agree, defence is where they might fall down. Fantasy wise though they'll have some attacking potential. If Firmino comes in at under 9mil then I think he'll be in a lot of teams

With the resources they have at their disposal and Pep in charge it's City for me. Plus the fact they are not in the CL I can't see past them winning it.

United will be where it's at.

Usually Europa League teams suffer. United won't, they'll more or less have a separate team for the EL and C1C - Rashford, Lingard, Fosu-M, Borth-J, and others of that ilk have little or no chance of being 1st choice starters under Mourinho but C1C and EL will give them plenty of games to aid their development. Add in some fringe 1st-teamers and you have a very decent 2nd XI for the cups in the first half of the season.

United will sign some big names - a CB (Varane?), a CF (Ibra?), a CM/DM (Matic?) and a top wide midfielder (Griezmann?) probably. Those that stay and make Mourinho's preferred XI (Rooney, Shaw and Martial for example) as well as some of the new arrivals should be great assets next season.

This will help FPL too by the way. Forget the new Leicester. Next season 'normal service' with pressure on budget and emphasis on efficient squad structure will be resumed. And a good thing too. 🙂

Agree, I fully expect normal service to resume with one of Man City/Man U/Che and to a lesser extent Arsenal competing for the title.

By the way, by next Leicester I didn't mean next underdog I meant next title contender.

Ah, OK. I have read a few comments about 'next season's Vardy, Alli, Mahrez' etc. I guess my point is that there may not be many players like that to emerge, this season was very unusual with the proliferation of 6.0/7.5 players performing so well (you can add Arnautovic, Ighalo, Willian, Ayew and others to the list as well).

There will always be one or two unheralded players emerging. But the constellation of them we had this season is unlikely to repeat.

Yep, a key part of why this season was a little different was the huge number of cheap and good players. I've never known a season like it. It was like 20 Michus and Zakis all at once.

          Hands off Varane 😉

United would have to offer Griezmann one hell of a deal to tempt him this summer too, especially if Atletico win the CL.

Agree though, normal service to resume next season, United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, City, Spurs could all improve.

Hopefully Burnley + Middlesborough can provide something close to Bournemouth + Watford levels of value!

They should provide some value defenders for use mainly in home matches, but they have no outstanding attackers to compare with Deeney, Ighalo and Wilson.

Spurs and Leicester both shared the role of providing stable XIs in form at decent prices. I expect Southampton to do this again next year, as they did at the end of this year and the start of the previous.

ManC, ManU, Chelsea all have a rebuilding job. Of those, City look the most serious challengers. Spurs, Arsenal, and to a lesser extent Liverpool are more stable. I think Spurs have the best chance from those three.

I think Arsenal will finish outside of CL spot if they do not get a striker and get rid of Wenger.

IF and its a big IF lei keeps all players and adds depth for the CL i can see them being top 5 again next season.
I think MCI and CHE will be top two next season, with UTD close third.

That is irrelevant to this kind of competition. It is only a group of players who produce a cumulative score against another group of players who produce a cumulative score.

For this tournament it is teams of 3 players.

I know I'm reading too much into this but....

Ibra loves Mourinho right? And he doesn't like Pep?

He's on a free transfer so massive wages aren't such an issue. One season to try and get that English title under his belt, whilst also stopping Pep?

      Could it be?

I know we don't even have Mourinho yet officially but can a man dream? 🙂

I don't it tbh just because a manager and player worked together in the past does not mean they will want to work together again . Messi is going to be linked with City , Every Dortmund player past and present will be linked with Pool , Varane will be linked with United etc etc . I think the manger would only tip the scales rather than being a key reason for going to a club

I'd agree normally, but I think Ibra vs Pep is a different matter entirely, and I don't see many other teams in England other than the Manchester teams that would go in for Ibra at his age.

Arsene, Poch, Conte won't want a quick short term fix, but he could take the expectation off Rashford / Martial / Depay at United for a year or two while they develop.

Likelihood that Alli starts for England at the Euros?

Has to be nailed but maybe wait until the final pre-tournament friendly as it's very likely our first XI starts that match.

For me the team that started yesterday with 2 changes will be the starting XI. Rooney+Smalling in for Stones+Sterling. Might be a bit narrow but Roy has liked the diamond formation in the past and it allows us to play Vardy and Kane as strikers.

I'm against the diamond so I'd drop Vardy or Wilshere out for Rooney. Sterling looks a little low on confidence but I think we need him for a bit of width.

I hate leaving Ronaldo out but I am starting with this:

      De Gea
      Boateng Koscelny Bonucci
      Ozil Alli Rakitic De Bryun
      Dzyuba Griezman Kane

4.0 mil keeper R/sanchez Smalling 4.0 mil defender
      Subs too weak?

I had Dier over Smalling but can't see how England can keep a clean sheet. Both have a little attacking potential but not sure it's enough, especially looking at the first 2 games

I'd have Perisic over Rakitic. I'd downgrade one of KDB or Ozil and upgrade R/Sanchez. Smalling -> Dier would also help with that.

      2mil to improve this team...

      Sommer / Almer

      Evra / Denayer / Hector / Wawrzyniak / Chester

      Alaba / Alli / Perisic / Grosicki / Mario

      Griezemann / Morata / Muller

Obviously waiting on Morata to see if he's nailed. Considering swapping to Kane and upgrading Alli to someone else?

I like that idea. Plenty of interesting options around 7-7.5m. You'd then have a bit left over to upgrade that defence.

          Yeah actually, this looks better:

          Sommer / Almer

          Evra / Denayer / Hector / Wawrzyniak / Chester

          Alaba / Koke / Perisic / Grosicki / Mario

          Griezemann / Kane / Muller

And I still have 1mil to play with. Would love to fit Alba in somehow but it looks too difficult

Not convinced Ronaldo is worth the money. I think there are other options in the 'big' category (like Muller) that would give you more to play with

I know Portugal are a defensive team, but their fixtures are strong and I think Ronaldo senses tournament time is running out. In the group at least I think he's worth a go...then maybe Muller come the knockouts.

Agree with that and I'm a big Ronaldo fan. I'm thinking he might be worth it for the last group game as I'm planning to wildcard then. Austria and Iceland didn't concede many in qualifying, he might get a goal but is that enough for 12mil?

Two absolutely dirt cheap subs are making me think twice... Not sure where to downgrade though tbh.

      Sommer - Almer
      Alba - Koscielny - Hector - Dier - 4.0 portugal def
      Perisic - Cesc - Alaba - Grosicki - 4.5 portugal mid
      Lewandowski(C) - Muller - Janko

Yeah I don't see how you can change that easily, without losing one of Alba or Lewa, which I can't see you being keen on 😉

I'm open to losing Koscielny / Perisic / Grosicki but not 100% sure that downgrading any of them is worth it with not many cheap options on offer.

          For example:
          Koscielny -> Schar
          Perisic -> Alli / Dzsudzak

gives me 1.5m to upgrade, but I don't see much at 6m in midfield (BRADY!) and not 100% the downgrades are worth a 5th defender at 5.5m

Just for the first 2 Matchdays against Czech and Turkey. I'm not sure if he is nailed but we got the friendlies to confirm it. I think Matchday 3 is the best time to WC as teams that've progressed through will definitely rest their key players.

It was probably more essential with LVG in charge to be honest.

Impossible to say who is essential right now, prepare for the biggest influx of top players to the PL ever.

United, City, Chelsea all big spenders with new managers.

Short term I'd say no. He needs to get fans on side with entertaining football so will have to go on the attack, 3-1 type games. He can focus on clean sheets later.

I have an almost identical team although i've gone Janko over Kane. Kane and Alli seems like too much England attack to me. That £1m has freed up cash to upgrade the likes of Denayer and Juanfran (who i don't think either are nailed)
