England and Iceland go head-to-head at 8pm as the Euro 2016 Round of 16 comes to an end.

Both sides were runners-up in their respective groups on the back of a win and two draws apiece, though there’s no question that the underlying stats are in favour of the Three Lions.

Given that Iceland have averaged just 28.3% possession so far, it’s fair to say that their opponents will be expected to dominate proceedings as the Scandinavians sit deep. As we saw against Slovakia, though, Roy Hodson’s side have toiled to break down obstinate opponents – they registered 29 unsuccessful attempts in their goalless draw against Slovakia.

England produced almost three times the number of attempts on goal (64 to 23) than their opponents over the group stages, though despite a wealth of options in the final third, currently lack a cutting edge and have scored just three times so far.

Iceland have found the net on more occasions (four) but given they’ve managed just nine shots on target, it remains to be seen if they can maintain a lofty 17.4% goal conversion rate – the highest in the tournament.

At the back, England again have reason for optimism. Hodgson’s men allowed a single big chance against in the group stages – less than any other side – and conceded just 11 efforts inside the box.

Iceland, on the other hand, have afforded the opposition 25 efforts in the penalty area, which bodes well for the Three Lions’ chances of grabbing the win that would see them square up to tournament favourites France in the quarter-final stage next time out.

    Clyne---Smalling----Stones---Shaw----
    -------------------Dier-------------------------
    ----------Barkley----Wilshere--------------
    -------------------Alli---------------------------
    ------------Vardy---Rashford----------------

Would be starting the world cup qualifying campaign with this lot.. Rooney needs put down... Kane will have to earn his place again after a shambolic tournament.. Likewise Sturridge who aside from a cameo against Wales has been gash in an England shirt.. Vardy and Rashford together bring a real intensity excitement composure and fearlessness to the side.. waste of time and effort on my part really they will still get turned inside out when it matters lol

can we actually have a functioning midfield please?

Put Dier and Drinwater in a two then work from there, I don't mind if its 4231 or flat 442 but your line up completely fails to address the black hole in the middle of the park. We need some semblance of control of the ball in the middle that can then be built on effectively with attacking talent in front of it. Dier cant do everything by himself.

      1. KingNidge
        • 10 Years

Fair points Balders my friend.. but i ain't having any wide players apart from the width from full backs.. it means Vardys and Sturridges getting shunted wide or drafting in sub standard Townsends and Sterlings...

          • 12 Years
          10 years, 23 days ago

That's why a 4231 probably works better than a 442. But Albrighton and Sterling or Ox as wide men in a 442 would still be better than a trash 433 with only one positionally and defensively competent midfielder.

How do these moves look for next round:

    Out: Dier, Alli, Perisic, Muller

I guess so. I don't like going into a week with less than the max no of players really especially with the quarters being spread out over 4 days. There is so much scope for changing your playing staff mid gameweek.

For outfielders its 2 out of 3 and that sounds much less reassuring. I think this round is more useful to have a full 15 too as there are the 4 matchdays to slowly change the team. Then for the next round there's 6 FTs anyway.

I'd WC this week regardless. Easier to cover the damage with 6 FTs.

I think it seems logical too

Of course you know what would happen. You load up on France players and they get sunk by the Icelandic Iceberg

Possibly. But it would limit the midweek transfers somewhat.

Rami would be the obvious one to keep I guess

Not sure whether to wildcard now or save for the semi-finals.

    Current Team:

    Hennessey / DE GEA
    Hector / Jed / Meunier / DIER / Taylor
PERISIC / RAKITIC / De Bruyne / Payet / Kroos
    Bale / Muller / Lukaku

    What would you do?

I am not sure what is worse
Being Scottish fan and knowing they are crap
Or being English fan and getting convinced they could be good only to be let down again.
