Moving Target

Moving Target – James Tomkins

Having already brought in Andros Townsend and Steve Mandanda, Crystal Palace made their third new addition of the transfer window last week by signing West Ham defender James Tomkins for £10 million.

The defender has joined on a five-year deal, and speaking to the club’s official website, spoke of his happiness at linking up with former Hammers boss Alan Pardew, while also outlining his ambitions for the forthcoming season:

“He helped me through by getting me training with the first-team when I was a kid and got my career started which I’ve always been thankful for, so it’s nice to be reunited with him. He’s been interested in signing me previously so it was an easy decision when I heard Palace were interested… Given how ambitious the owners and the chairman are and with a few numbers coming in, the top half is a good goal to look at… There’s a nice feeling around the place and it feels like we’re going places here.”

The History

Spotted by West Ham scouts playing for his local Sunday league side, Tomkins joined the club’s academy when he was just eight-years-old. Initially a striker, Tomkins moved into central defence, and made his Premier League in a 1-1 draw against Everton in March 2008.

The following season, Tomkins was sent out on loan to Derby Country by then-Irons boss Gianfranco Zola, playing eight matches in all competitions for the Rams before being recalled. He would go on to make 12 Premier League appearances in 2008/09, and was subsequently handed a long-term contract at Upton Park.

Tomkins was part of the West Ham squad that suffered relegation in 2011, but in the one season the Hammers spent in the Championship, was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, racking up four goals and as many assists.

In recent years, Tomkins has remained in important part of the first-team squad, although under Slaven Bilic last season he lost out to Angelo Ogbonna as the preferred partner for Winston Reid in central defence, while Michail Antonio was utilised at right-back during the second half of last season.

In total, Tomkins played 164 times for the Hammers in the Premier League, scoring four goals and registering five assists.

The new Palace signing has featured at every level for England from Under 16 to Under 21s, making 37 appearances, but has yet to earn a senior cap. Tomkins did feature for the Great Britain Olympic football squad at London 2012, playing twice.

The Prospects

Perhaps tellingly, Tomkins was immediately handed a role in Pardew’s first XI in their opening summer friendly against Philadelphia Union earlier in the week, with the Palace manager playing down a slight strain picked up by the new boy midway through the match.

Tomkins’ arrival certainly looks bad news for Damien Delaney, with the former expected to replace the Republic of Ireland international alongside Scott Dann in Pardew’s back-four. The versatile Tomkins has also played at right-back, and could offer cover behind Joel Ward in that position for the Eagles.

Looking at Tomkins’ underlying statistics last term, he was on a par with Dann for clearances (one every 18.3 minutes compared to Dann’s 18) and was superior for interceptions (38.2 minutes to 53.7), though lagged some way behind for blocks (one every 206.4 minutes to Dann’s 72.4 minutes).

There’s little doubt Dann will be the name most Fantasy managers will gravitate to when looking for a Palace defender given his performances last season, when he scored five goals and grabbed one assist. The downside is that’s likely to earn the former Blackburn man a price rise in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, perhaps up to 5.5.

Other members of Palace’s backline could come in at either 4.5 or 5.0, with Tomkins possibly valued at 5.0 in light of his proven Premier League pedigree.

Given that the Eagles managed just eight clean sheets (six at home) and conceded 51 times, Tomkins will need to offer a decent attacking threat to come into consideration. Encouragingly, he won a higher percentage of his aerial duels than Dann last season and bearing in mind that Palace were third for goal attempts from set-pieces last term, he may yet emerge as a viable cheaper option.

The fact that Palace have, according to our Season Ticker, the most favourable fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks (WBA, tot, BOU, mid, STO) certainly boosts their appeal as we start to assemble our 15-man squads. Tomkins looks very likely to become a key part of the rearguard alongside Dann, and with an expected cheaper price tag, has the chance to stake an initial claim for a spot in our five-man backlines.

I plan 2 double ups at the back. A Keeper and defender from united and 2 Chelsea defenders.

I will be going for the strongest 11 possible with 4 weak players and if i get into trouble will just wild card when needs be.

Pray for some clean sheets for an early lead 🙂

My sources/local media suggest that Pelle will not be replaced as he was already expected to move and that was why Austin was brought in. If Austin and JRod continue to struggle with fitness, Long will be nailed on. I grow more and more convinced that JRod's top flight career may be over after this season, unable to recover from that crippling ACL injury.

Saints remain committed to bringing in a first choice no. 10 and potentially a winger of the Mané kind. That would give a lot of creative talent behind Long (who is also expected to sign a new contract in the coming weeks).

Bertrand signing a new contract means that the Saints should have their first season of continuity at the back, as I now expect none of the back 5 to leave. Koeman could have had a chance stealing Van Dijk, had he not got him to sign a new 6 year deal. 😆

I'd have wanted to replace Pelle but I don't think my opinion counts for much 😉 Austin will do great if he can put last season's niggles behind him.

Yes likes 2 up top. Wonder if he might change for the PL though. If he was going to commit to 2 up top, I think we'd be buying strikers as we've had a squad that's used to playing 1 up.

I would dearly love Austin to be at least 1st choice. I think as a scorer he is better than Long. But Long better at running the channels and in behind

Redmond was a long-term interest of the club, having scouted him for several years. When his contract came down and the price relatively affordable, we moved for him. It was hoped at that time that we might still keep Mané. Also, Redmond wasn't a Puel signing and it is thought he will want input on the new man. 🙂 I understand that this will depend on the availability of targets though so we'll stick with Redmond if things don't go our way, rather than paying over the odds.

    @Lucy

A #10 and a winger? Wonder if a return for Walcott could be on the cards? Wages would be a huge stumbling block though 😕 Maybe someone from Newcastle; Wijnaldum or Thauvin?

Likewise Mata would be an awesome #10 or maybe even a move for Nasri from City? Again, wages could be an issue.

Some of these moves aren't really typical Southampton moves. Mata and Nasri have limited resale value and aren't young so I can't see them happening. Mata may well end up with Koeman. Not that I wouldn't love Mata...

I've seen us linked with the Ox for the no. 10 role, rather than Walcott for the wing role.

Would like Wijnaldum but £25m is obscene so that won't happen. Thauvin has shown nothing to make me interested and I'm sure that applies to the other teams in the PL.

If we don't go for the Ox, or can't afford him, I expect the moves to come from outside the UK. The dream is Boufal but I think a bigger team will snap him up. Stanciu, Praet and a few others remain in the frame. 🙂

I don't think Conte will go 3-5-2, Cahill & JT will start the season. Depends on whether they perform or not as to whether Zouma has a case for starting

If conte will play his 3-5-2 he s deffo gonne be one of the outer CB's as they look need his speed. Either terry or Cahill central to clear crosses and they will bring in a new face to complete that line of 3

Really, really disappointed we haven't got more for him. Think he's worth at least 40m in today's market. Also think it's poor of him to leave, the only reason really being for the money, thought our players might show a little more loyalty if I'm honest.

Ah well, Amartey and Mendy in the wings so hopefully they can step up.

You can't blame Kante for leaving. Chances Leicester will finish in the top 4 are pretty low. And if you were being offered to be the 5th best-paid player in the world, in Pelle's case, at 29 years of age, you would take it. Get off your high horse

It really does depend on how Mendy does in that role. Kanté was unbelievably good at screening the back four and took huge pressure off the defence, as they could sit back rather than coming out to tackle. However, last summer we wanted Mendy over Kante so there is a chance he'll be just as good.

I'd wait and see how we start, and what system we play. Champions league will also make the starting XI less predictable and the squad more tired so wouldn't gamble on starting with our defence.

    Double Gameweek Planning (no, really!!!)

There are a lot of “ifs” and “buts” here, so take this with a pinch of salt!

If there are no postponements for non-football reasons, there shouldn’t be an issue with fixture congestion/clashes like last season this year.

    Potential Gameweeks (GWs) with blanks

    GW26 (League Cup final)
    GW28 (FA Cup quarter finals)
    GW34 (FA Cup semis)

These all fit like a glove with the free midweeks for possible re-arrangements (assuming there will be no Champions League clashes this season)

    GW26
    GW34
    GW37

FA Cup replays shouldn’t cause problems either – there are no Quarter Finals replays this year, and blank midweeks in other rounds free (all pre-GW26) for replays in rounds 3, 4 and 5.

    What does this mean?

Well, we obviously don’t know who the League Cup finalists or FA Cup quarter/semi finalists are going to be yet, but the re-arranged matches for the League Cup could easily (and logically) just slot in the midweek after the League Cup final in GW26, thus making it a normal Single Gameweek (SGW) for all 20 teams.

Easily and logically also the Premier League (PL) matches postponed for the FA Cup quarter finals could slot in to the midweek GW34, and PL matches postponed for the FA Cup semi finals could slot in to the midweek after GW37.

If the FA Cup quarter finalists and semi finalists are the same as last year (I know they won’t be, but this is just as an example), AND the fixtures are re-arranged in line with what has been stated above, this means the fixtures for GW28, 24 and 37 will be as follows……….

PL FA Cup quarter finalists: Arsenal, Chelsea, Palace, Everton, Man U, Watford, West Ham

PL FA Cup semi finalists: Palace, Everton, Man U, Watford

GW28 (8 teams with SGW, 12 with blanks)

    Hull v Swansea
    Man C v Stoke
    Middlesbrough v Sunderland
    Liverpool v Burnley

    Everyone else with a blank

GW34 (7 teams with DGWs, 10 with SGWs, 3 with blanks)

    Weekend
    Arsenal v Sunderland
    Bournemouth v Middlesbrough
    Chelsea v Southampton
    Leicester v Spurs
    Man C v West Brom
    Swansea v Stoke

    Midweek re-arranged from GW38
    Arsenal v Leicester
    Bournemouth v West Ham
    Chelsea v Watford
    Palace v Spurs
    Everton v West Brom
    Southampton v Man U

GW37 (8 teams with DGWs, 12 with SGWs)

    Weekend
    Bournemouth v Burnley
    Palace v Hull
    Everton v Watford
    Man C v Leicester
    Middlesbrough v Southampton
    Stoke v Arsenal
    Sunderland v Swansea
    Spurs v Man U
    West Brom v Chelsea
    West Ham v Liverpool

    Midweek re-arranged from GW34
    Burnley v Man U
    Hull v Watford
    Liverpool v Palace
    West Ham v Everton

All signs point to GW34 being pivotal as it looks very likely there will end up being some teams with DGWs AND some teams with blanks……….

If the chips are the same as last year, it looks like a shoe-in that the best tactic to maximise player numbers without hits will be to WC in GW33, because of no teams having both a fixture in GW28 and a DGW in GW34, and therefore a WC33, BB34 and TC37 tactic may work out the best, but we know from last year maximising player numbers doesn’t always end up being the best tactic……..

      Costa - Batshuayi

        Surely Matic ahead of Fabregas?

I'd prefer Matic to be there with Kante & let Hazard & Willian take care of the creativity.

Fabregas and Oscar gonna be surplus next season.

On the other hand, that's a massive midfield duo you got there; Matic - Kante. Expecting bundle of CS next season.

With Kante being the first rat to jiump ship, will Mahrez now follow?
One suspects a few of the Leicester players will have been bidi their time not wanting to be the first to be seen to be cashing in.
Very sad in footballing terms. Rather like the rich elite, the top Four always find a way to cling onto power
