The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Sunday

A stunning performance from Philippe Coutinho at the Emirates overshadows even Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Premier League debut as Liverpool hit four in Arsenal’s backyard. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches.

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We thought the debate on Jurgen Klopp’s midfield was settled. However, Coutinho’s display at the Emirates already threatens to change matters and have us reconsider Roberto Firmino as our top target.

Coutinho simply sparkled, fetching a pair of breathtaking goals and is likely to end the Gameweek as the leading points scorer. He is already officially first transfer bandwagon having soared to the top of the “transfers in” ranks.

Worryingly, he limped off in the second-half having dealt the damage, although Jurgen Klopp has since confirmed that his withdrawal was caused by cramp rather than a hamstring injury.

We’ve always had concerns on Coutinho’s consistency as an FPL asset but should he profit from the trip to Burnlye in Gameweek 2, he will already become difficult to ignore.

Sadio Mane
Mane also came out of the Arsenal victory with plaudits. A superb solo effort capped an effervescent performance and offered a reminder of his explosive qualities. Mane looked at home in Klopp’s line-up on the right of a front three and, like Coutinho, if he delivers again at Burnley, his stock will close further on Firmino.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
It was almost inevitable that Ibrahimovic would score on his Premier League debut. Again, the Swede often dropped deep at Bournemouth and both his attempts on goal were from outside the box. That won’t bother his 42% ownership or the 21% who handed him the Gameweek captaincy.

Wayne Rooney
While Ibrahimovic will get more attention, the United skipper emerged from the Vitality Stadium with a goal in a busy display of some promise. We’re not convinced just yet but, based on these early signs, it’s possible that Rooney could outperform his 9.0 price tag.

Anthony Martial
Another stand-out performer in Jose Mourinho’s ranks – Martial looked sharp and positive on the left-flank and came out with two assists and a share of the maximum bonus. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan used from the bench once again, if Paul Pogba’s raids are curtailed by a role in the double pivot, Martial could yet be the most attractive of the United midfield.

Antonio Valencia
Once again the Ecuadorian offered far more going forward than Luke Shaw on the opposite flank, confirming that he is our favoured route into the United backline. Eric Bailly was impressive but Valencia’s quality going forward is enough to keep him firmly in place at the top of of Watchlist, despite United’s failure to earn a shut-out.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Let’s not panic. However, there’s no doubt that the performances of Coutinho and Mane took a nibble out of our confidence in Firmino. It’s possible that we have to live with every Liverpool midfield asset taking turns to come to the fore. However, if Klopp’s side win at Burnley in Gameweek 2, Firmino really needs to get amongst the points to restore our faith.

The Arsenal Defence
The injury troubles were well publicised and we expected today’s encounter to test Arsenal’s resolve. However, the nature of the Liverpool performance indicated that it could take several weeks for Arsene Wenger to restore stability. Hector Bellerin at 6.5 and with 30% ownership already looks a liability.

Alberto Moreno
If it wasn’t clear that James Milner was Klopp’s first choice at left-back heading into today’s game, Moreno’s performance at Arsenal fixed that. The Spaniard’s desperate lunge on Theo Walcott went unpunished when the penalty was saved but, just a minute later, Moreno was exposed for Arsenal’s opener. He is surely destined for cameo roles this season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Almost 20,000 have axed Vardy already. Realistically, how many until he drops to 9.9m, do we reckon?

The bit that annoys me I missed out on all this goals last season.
Got him this season playing against a makeshift defence and club in turmoil, design my team so I can get him to captain him and he blanks.

Xhaka picks up a lot of red cards (he got 5 for gladbach last season) I don't think Wenger was confident in having him start in such a big game.

I'd rather have Xhaka/Cazorla controlling the game and run the risk of a few bookings/early subs than Coquelin/Elneny operating as workhorses.

To be honest Leicester and Vardy in particular are more suited to playing against teams like Arsenal who keep possession, attack and leave space in behind their defence than a team like Hull.

No doubting Mane's explosiveness but question marks over his consistency. It'll be interesting to see if he can become a more reliable FPL asset with better teammates at Liverpool.

Honestly I don't know...the prospect of having an arsenal starter for 4.5 seemed like people would transfer him in + Wenger preferred holding over chambers in preseason. But arsenal just conceded 4 and chambers scored a goal so if anything people will transfer in chambers. Stupid decision I know.

No I actually did. He played every preseason game and started 4/5 of then. Chambers played 3/5 and started 1 or 2. But chambers scored a goal so I'm not confident holding will keep his place

bailly so much better, a defender that can defend and is better than stones on the ball.

    CITY UPDATE

Now this update is gonna be a biggy coz I'm gonna include everything I know about the Joe Hart situation, from the moment I was originally told up to now!
But first I'll get the other bits of news out of the way....
I've now been told that Claudio Bravo was definitely the keeper who I mentioned had signed when I released the info on Saturday and not Ter Stegan.
The mistake is easily done if someone says 'City have signed that Barca keeper they're after....'
Bravo has agreed personal terms already and will definitely become a City player. The two Club's are just sorting out fees and a release date due to Ter Stegan's injury.
Jason Denayer is on the verge of re-signing for Galatasaray on loan again. He was left out of the squad at the weekend so he could have talks and sort things out. He has since changed his profile picture on Twitter to him playing in a Galatasaray kit, has tweeted a few things in Turkish praising Galatasaray and has removed 'Manchester City player' from his profile.
Next is that FC Porto have definitely made a loan offer for Mangala but City are unsure of agreeing as they would prefer a sale or a loan with an obligation to buy, which at the minute Porto aren't offering - talks continue....
Finally is the Joe Hart stuff....
    So, from the beginning....
First of all Joe Hart has been doing extra training work all summer, before and after the Euro's, which mainly consisted of distribution and playing with his feet coz he knew Pep wanted that in his goalkeepers. He was also very excited about working under Pep.
Once Joe came back to City training after the Euro's, Pep almost immediately told Joe that he wasn't part of his long-term plans, which was about 10 days to 2 weeks ago. Joe responded by telling Pep that he loves the club and wanted to stay and fight for his place and prove Pep wrong. Pep said he would think about it.
After a couple of days Pep told Joe that his mind was made up and that he wasn't his long-term keeper but after talks he agreed to let Joe stay until next summer where Joe would then get a testimonial and say goodbye at that game in a fitting way. Joe accepted this decision even though he was gutted and upset.
We then get to this week!!!
Apparently, Joe was under the impression that even though this was probably his last year at City, he would still be No.1 and in the back of his mind still thought he could change Pep's mind throughout the season.
At training on Friday evening at the Etihad Joe was told that Willy would play against Sunderland. Joe then erupted and stormed of leaving the training field and then went on to do this (see picture below) to the video screens in the tunnel....
Later that night Mikel Arteta, NOT Pep, informed Joe that he and his agent needed to start looking for a new club immediately and he wasn't in any kind of Pep's plans whatsoever and that it's unlikely that he'll play for City again.
He was then ordered (with the rest of the team) to the usual pre-match meeting at the CFA at 1pm on Saturday where things were cooled down and Hart was named on the bench. Before that meeting he was omitted from the entire squad!
Apparently, he has already turned down a move to Everton coz he thinks that's a step backwards and he's been offered to Barcelona as part of the Ter Stegan deal, which obviously isn't happening at the moment.
Like I said, the original plan was to wait until next summer after a testimonial coz Joe and his agent thought that he could move to Arsenal, Spurs or Juventus coz of Cech's pending retirement, Lloris will join United, PSG or Madrid and Buffon is also looking at retiring.
If Joe doesn't leave in the next two weeks these could still be his options but his England career would be over if he stayed coz he's not gonna play under Pep.
Willy Caballero will also definitely start against Steaua Buchrest regardless of what Pep said in interviews! It's highly unlikely that Joe will ever play for City again after all this, which is a shame and as you can imagine Joe is distraught.

Hart is frustrated and has been told to leave the club now (by Arteta). He tho want to wait and join Arsenal, Spurs or Juve next summer, but was also offered as a deal for Bravo.

Pep really made this so wrong, I can't believe it, I am frustrated also. This is not how you treat one of legends of club's latest history. Hart is fan favourite and this is not the way how Pep should get love from the fans.

You don't take criticism very well do you?

                  A bit like Joe Hart.

You mean recent history? Let's face it, he's been poor recently.

Still, I'd rather have him as back-up than let him go, but he's a diva and he's sealed his own fate. Good riddance.

                    Yes, I mean that.

Only few keepers are better than him at this moment - DDG, Lloris, Buffon, Neuer and Navas. Match with Oblak.

At the moment? I'd easily argue more than half the prem keepers are better than him. But that's only my assessment and I'm not a City fan.

I always wanted Butland or Forster to start in the Euros though, and Hart managed to let England down miserably.

Forster is a much better keeper.

Agreed. I was livid when he didn't take Hart's place after Wales match.

Du, I appreciate your passion on this topic, but this is flat out not true. He can't sniff DDG, Buffon or Neuer who are the clear top 3. He's not as good as Lloris or Navas either. He played well at times in the past, I usually dont miss a City game on TV for last 4 years...but he also makes weird blunders that better keeper never make or only make once in a...wait for it...blue moon.

I'm not a City fan. But if I was, I'd be glad the club signed Guardiola. A manager who isn't into 'being nice' and lying to his players that he'll consider them and give them a chance, when he knows he won't.

As much as he tried during pre-season, Hart just can't magically raise his pass completion from 50% to 80%. And he can't become a 'sweeper keeper' like Neuer over one summer.

Even if he tried, he knows it would end in numerous howlers. And not only for Hart, the same applies to the majority of PL 'keepers.

Pep is being realistic and he wants better options.

Doesn't Pep have, somewhat, a history of treating those he doesn't want poorly? Or better said maybe, of totally ignoring them?

Pelegrini got dogged by the English media when he dropped Hart for his sub-par performances to the point where he almost had to restore him. Hart has always been poor, it's just taken way too long for the English media to accept it

Reading this somehow really hurts. He's been poor recently, but he's still been a real benefit for the club throughout all these years. Kept us in so many lost cause games. I don't feel too good about this, and from what you're saying, they've handled it very poorly.

You don't transfer in players on only the basis that they scored the last week. Either or, but definitely not both.

So, it's highly unusual that I go so top heavy from the outset but I am not really feeling much value in premium mids or def. Feel like I'll be saving my ft.

    Heaton/Mandanda

    Stones/Evans/Baines/Ogbonna (Friend)
    Shaqiri/Martial/Bolasie (Ward-Prowse, Gradel)
    Kun/Ibra/Rooney

    Any thoughts for GW2???
