A stunning performance from Philippe Coutinho at the Emirates overshadows even Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Premier League debut as Liverpool hit four in Arsenal’s backyard. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches.

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We thought the debate on Jurgen Klopp’s midfield was settled. However, Coutinho’s display at the Emirates already threatens to change matters and have us reconsider Roberto Firmino as our top target.

Coutinho simply sparkled, fetching a pair of breathtaking goals and is likely to end the Gameweek as the leading points scorer. He is already officially first transfer bandwagon having soared to the top of the “transfers in” ranks.

Worryingly, he limped off in the second-half having dealt the damage, although Jurgen Klopp has since confirmed that his withdrawal was caused by cramp rather than a hamstring injury.

We’ve always had concerns on Coutinho’s consistency as an FPL asset but should he profit from the trip to Burnlye in Gameweek 2, he will already become difficult to ignore.

Sadio Mane
Mane also came out of the Arsenal victory with plaudits. A superb solo effort capped an effervescent performance and offered a reminder of his explosive qualities. Mane looked at home in Klopp’s line-up on the right of a front three and, like Coutinho, if he delivers again at Burnley, his stock will close further on Firmino.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
It was almost inevitable that Ibrahimovic would score on his Premier League debut. Again, the Swede often dropped deep at Bournemouth and both his attempts on goal were from outside the box. That won’t bother his 42% ownership or the 21% who handed him the Gameweek captaincy.

Wayne Rooney
While Ibrahimovic will get more attention, the United skipper emerged from the Vitality Stadium with a goal in a busy display of some promise. We’re not convinced just yet but, based on these early signs, it’s possible that Rooney could outperform his 9.0 price tag.

Anthony Martial
Another stand-out performer in Jose Mourinho’s ranks – Martial looked sharp and positive on the left-flank and came out with two assists and a share of the maximum bonus. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan used from the bench once again, if Paul Pogba’s raids are curtailed by a role in the double pivot, Martial could yet be the most attractive of the United midfield.

Antonio Valencia
Once again the Ecuadorian offered far more going forward than Luke Shaw on the opposite flank, confirming that he is our favoured route into the United backline. Eric Bailly was impressive but Valencia’s quality going forward is enough to keep him firmly in place at the top of of Watchlist, despite United’s failure to earn a shut-out.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Let’s not panic. However, there’s no doubt that the performances of Coutinho and Mane took a nibble out of our confidence in Firmino. It’s possible that we have to live with every Liverpool midfield asset taking turns to come to the fore. However, if Klopp’s side win at Burnley in Gameweek 2, Firmino really needs to get amongst the points to restore our faith.

The Arsenal Defence
The injury troubles were well publicised and we expected today’s encounter to test Arsenal’s resolve. However, the nature of the Liverpool performance indicated that it could take several weeks for Arsene Wenger to restore stability. Hector Bellerin at 6.5 and with 30% ownership already looks a liability.

Alberto Moreno
If it wasn’t clear that James Milner was Klopp’s first choice at left-back heading into today’s game, Moreno’s performance at Arsenal fixed that. The Spaniard’s desperate lunge on Theo Walcott went unpunished when the penalty was saved but, just a minute later, Moreno was exposed for Arsenal’s opener. He is surely destined for cameo roles this season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not a lot of love for Ayew on here. Remember last year when everyone said he was unproven, then he scored at Chelsea on his debut?

vert annoying but no way I am switching Firm to Cou after one game. I picked Firm for a reason, and he was excellent today, unlucky to get amongst the points but I picked him for a reason and am happy to hold/

If an injury happens tomorrow I would consider a double up with Cou&Firm for a few games but that's about it

he has always had great stats but the problem in the last few seasons is his lack of output, has been more of a Silva type, very creative, assist the assist.

He has had sparks of of magic but tonight was different, it was a higher level of performance and this could be his breakout season with the players Klopp has brought in.

I still think selling Firm for him week1 is madness and am happy to wait another week or two and see if he keeps it up. I am glad he improved his FK as it's been an issue for Liverpool last few seasons

Yes, yes, he was guilty of that before. Yet this year he's certainly turning a new page in the marvellous book of the Coutinho. Now they have players capable of finishing all his chances with Mané & hopefully a fit Sturridge or Origi. Could very well end up being the highest scoring Pool mid & looks certain to have the burden of the attack flowing through his veins.

He's got the magic, he's got the spark, Coutinho is the real deal.

          58 with Hazard to go.

          So not bad.

I have the same issue re: Vardy & Ibrahimovic. My take is come Friday after update we will have two transfers so if needs be I'll do it then maybe.

          1. Jay_
            9 years, 11 months ago

Great start! Yh I get ya, depends on the price of the downgrade really, if for instance I downgraded Hazard to Ramirez and upped Gray to Ibra, there's no way I could wait as anything below 5.5 is dead in the mids. If it's Vardy that has to go then I'll only need .5 so can just wait as lots of good cheapie defenders get.

    Foster (Heaton)
    Shaw-Stones-Morgan (Kone-Amat)
    Mane-Redmond-Townsend-Deulofeu (Capoue)
    Aguero-Ibra-Vardy

Looking for a transfer for GW2
Morgan > 5.0 Defender (Funes Mori?)
    Deulofeu > ??
    Vardy > ???

Probably should wait til Chelsea v West Ham game but would love to get your thoughts.

Save the transfer. Start Amat over Morgan.

If you're set on making a transfer then Morgan -> Everton defender looks good.

Ah didn't notice Kone there. Probably him. Sunderland looked quite solid against City and he has goal threat.

If I had a wildcard all I'd change is

        Shaw > Valencia
        Morgan > Williams
        Townsend > Ramirez

And keep a million in the bank for Vardy to Kane. So jealous of your team right now 🙂

Tempted to join the bandwagon and get Cout/Ibra for Kane/Firm

I've done well this week, I played Capoue and have Kingsley and Amat already onboard, I just forgot out of pure forgetfulness to get Damante for Grabban! But he got an assist so all good.

I didn't see highlights yet but heard Kane was gash. If Ibra takes off I'm bummed so might make the Cout in for Firm and Ibra in for Kane move sooner rather than later.

If you could turn back the clock a few days... Which one player would you kick out and which one would you bring in? I'd have to say goodbye to Firmino and hello to Redmond I think.

    1. Jay_

I just wish I didn't get VVD and got a cheaper defender and kept 1.5 for Vardy to Ibra. Only kept 1 million blindly only thinking about Kane.

I was inches away from going Lamela + Ibra over Firmino + Vardy. It was my last decision. I had Lamela in pretty much all preseason for Spurs cover then panicked slightly. Still happy with the start but it stings. Only been one GW and all that, though.

I also had Lamela in almost all preseason.
Deciced upgrade Lamela -> Alli because I had 2.5m itb.
