Moving Target

Moving Target – Ashley Williams

Everton continued to step up their summer recruitment drive with the signing of Swansea defender Ashley Williams for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £11 million.

The 31-year-old put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the Toffees, and speaking about his latest signing, new Everton manager Ronald Koeman explained why he was so keen to bring the Welsh skipper to Goodison Park:

“We wanted to bring in a strong player in the central defence position, a player who knows the Premier League and Ashley fits the bill for us very well. He is an experienced defender and the kind of player we need in the team. He is a leader. He showed this at Swansea and he has shown it for his country and he is looking forward to his new challenge here at Everton.”

The History

Williams began his youth career at West Brom, but was released by the Baggies at the age of 16. He then spent two seasons at non-league side Hednesford Town, before joining Stockport County in 2003.

He lasted five years with the Hatters, making 165 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and registering two assists, while he was also handed the captain’s armband at Edgeley Park.

In March 2008, then Swansea manager Roberto Martinez swooped to sign Williams for a then club-record transfer fee of a reported £400,000, and the centre-back immediately established himself as a key player at the Liberty Stadium, helping the club rise from League One to the Premier League by 2011.

Over the past five seasons, Williams, who took over the Swansea captaincy from Garry Monk, has been one of the most consistent centre-backs in the Premier League, and helped lead the club to two top 10 finishes, as well as a Capital One Cup success in 2012/13.

Williams, born in Wolverhampton, qualified to play for Wales due to his Welsh grandfather, and made his international debut in a 2-0 win against Luxembourg in March 2008. He led his country to qualification for this summer’s European Championship in France, and the team exceeded all expectations to reach the semi-finals, only to lose 2-0 to Portugal. Williams has currently made 66 appearances for Wales, scoring two goals.

The Prospects

As alluded to by Koeman’s comments, the former Swansea defender has been brought in to provide some leadership to a defence that conceded 55 goals last season, with only five teams having a worse record.

Koeman trialled a three-man defence during pre-season, a system he utilised whilst at Southampton, and also opted for the same set-up at home to Spurs on Saturday afternoon.

At this point, though, it remains to be seen whether the Toffees’ boss will only use this against the stronger teams in the Premier League and revert to a four-man defence thereafter.

Following John Stones’ departure to Man City, Williams looks set to be the first-choice selection at centre-back at Goodison Park, with Phil Jagielka, who Koeman revealed will not be leaving this summer despite interest from Sunderland, likely to be battling it out with Ramiro Funes Mori to start alongside the Wales international.

The Toffees have also been heavily linked with Sunderland defender Lamine Kone though, and should they sign the Ivorian, the chances of using a three-man backline would certainly increase.

Analysing the underlying statistics of Williams, Jagielka and Funes Mori in terms of their goal threat last season, the Argentine held a clear advantage, averaging a goal attempt every 97.1 minutes, significantly superior to both Williams (214) and Jagielka (216.8).

Nonetheless, Williams’ all-action type of defending, with a desire to put his body on the line every times he steps foot onto the pitch, has seen him put up strong numbers for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) over the past few seasons.

Only Leicester’s Christian Fuchs (with 25) garnered more bonus points than Williams (24) in the last campaign, with the centre-back regularly benefitting when his side managed to keep a clean sheet.

In addition, Williams has missed just nine Premier League matches over the past five seasons, so his durability offers another string to his bow.

Williams, Jagielka and Funes Mori are all priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and whilst the new boys’ CBI boosts his appeal, it’s worth noting that Funes Mori scored four goals last term from just 24 starts and is one to monitor if he nails down a regular role.

The new recruit was handed an extended break following his Euro 2016 exertions, and with 10 days’ training alongside his new team-mates, should now be ready to take on West Brom next weekend.

He edges into the picture just as Everton embark on a very favourable upcoming run (wba, STO, sun, MID, bou, CPL, mci, bur), with only the trip to Man City in Gameweek 8 providing a stern test of he Toffees defence; clean sheets around that encounter look likely.

Ultimately, Koeman’s chosen formation will depend how we assess this new Everton rearguard.

Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman (when fit) will be the favoured options if stationed as wing-backs. Both are more expensive at 5.5 apiece in FPL, though with Coleman injured, Baines is set to emerge as a candidate to consider over the medium-term, particularly bearing in mind Koeman oversaw a Southampton side that kept an impressive 27 clean sheets over the past two seasons.

Kone over Williams would be a no brainer if he went to Everton. I'm confident we'll keep him now though.

Koscielny potentially still unavailable for Leicester trip. Holding and Chambers conceded four at home to Liverpool. Arsenal won't sit back. Vardy has the pace to get in behind.

    Mahrez - Hazard - Townsend - Ramirez - Leko
    Aguero - Vardy - Long

He claims he knew nothing of the transfer request or statement. I highly doubt that but at same time think his agent has driven all of this and handled it very poorly. Now that moyes has said he'll get a new deal on Sept 1st I expect him to stay at Sunderland, unless someone offers in excess of £20m for him.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Keep or ditch?

Of those being transferred out this week, who do you think should be ditched and who should be given more time?

Vardy – 23,000 FPL managers have already ditched him. No penalties in a Leicester side that was humbled by Hull? Or are his promising underlying stats a cause for optimism, especially against a vulnerable Arsenal back line?

Morgan – Dumped by 16,000 - With no Kante, is the Foxes defence’s time up?

Mkhitaryan – Not a certain starter and Martial has been bringing in the points? Surely it’s a no brainer to ditch him? Or will he come back firing against Southampton?

Long – overshadowed by Tadic and Redmond and taking up a precious striker spot in a market where many cheap strikers are doing well.

Firmino – Are those to ditch for Coutinho right? Or will they be left disappointed?

Gray – promising underlying stats, but as with Long can FPL managers afford to keep him with Negredo, Rondon and Defoe among others all doing well in that general price bracket?

How is Firmino in the Silva mould?

He smashed it last season and for me as a false 9 was the obvious pick out of the Liverpool team.

I think they'll share point between the 3 of them - Firmino, Coutinho, Mane but will hopefully score enough goals each game to regular get points.

Leicester were missing Huth badly. Hernandez was poor I thought. So I am giving Morgan the benefit of the doubt to see whether the return of Huth will result in better defensive performances.

Interesting point, Huth could well improve them. I wonder if Hernandez will challenge Simpson for RB, probably not until CL starts to hit.

No penalties for Vardy will probably be the deciding factor. Specifically chose him over Mahrez for that reason

      Morgan - sell
Mkhit - sell (and be prepared to get back)
      Long - keep
      Firmino - keep
      Gray - keep

For me its all about whether there are better players.

With Gray and Firmino I want to see how they do over another one or two gameweeks. I dumped Wilson early last season and regretted it. Gray, unlike Kane, also registered a few goal attempts.

Mkhitaryan should also be given a bit more time. If he doesn't make the starting XI v Southampton then its definitely time to go.

I think with Vardy and the Leicester defence though we already have two key pieces of information. Leicester without Kante means their defence is weaker. there are cheaper and better options elsewhere so I'd dump them if I owned any.

Vardy not on pens is a huge blow - as that means Mahrez is the better option. Leicester's style of play invites penalties, as we saw at Hull and last season.

Arsenal's defence looked porous however, not sure how wise shipping Vardy is just yet, he really should have scored twice yesterday, lax finishing.

Mikki is the one player from the OP that i can't justify giving another chance. Mata, Rooney and Martial all contributed, which makes me think it's highly unlikely for Mikki to start vs Soton. Not that I have Mikki anyways.

Vardy I picked with the 3 first gw in mind, and i will still give him those juicy matches without penalties. Punch in the stomach though to see Mahrez hold the ball prior to the pen...

I think it's not about Gray, it's about Burnley who look underwhelming. Better options: long term - Rondon, short term (Hull!) - Llorente.

    14. Justin T
      • 9 Years

I have both Long and Firmino in my team and I was always on the border whether to recruit in Rondon (on my watchlist) or Gray for Long's place.

Think I'm going to stick it out with both Long and Firmino for one more week then re-asses the situation.

It's very easy to get pulled out of position just on the basis of GW1 results and performances.

My fear with Negredo is his work rate isn't that great and although he's a great poacher and does get goals I'm not overly convinced yet. I would choose Defoe over Negredo but I've currently used up my entire budget so can't afford the extra 0.5m

      1. Biancazzurri

I know a fair few people on FFS had CRY's Defender Dann on their team. After the fairly poor performance from Crystal Saturday what are all your thoughts on keeping him as a 5.5m when there are other options like:

      Valencia 5.5m (Great fixtures)
      Shaw 5.5m (Great fixtures)
      Baines 5.5m
      Walker 5.5m
Clyne 5.5m (Good assist potential but not so much on CS)

I got Dann for his scoring potential indeed!

I may take him out for the next couple fixtures and then put him back in the squad as the fixtures ease up.

Everton have very good fixtures over next 4-5 games and Ronald they showed great promise in the first half against Spurs.

Id have thought that if you are going to spend £5.5m on a defender you would want clean sheets in addition to the 'odd' attacking return.

      On Vardy:

      1) Could and should've scored two if it wasn't for poor finishing.
      2) has two home ties against Arsenal (that defence!) and Swansea up next.

I would stick for 2 more games and see how it pans out...

I predicted Leicester would finish 11th before the season started and thats based on a defence getting older, Kante going and teams setting up to cope with Leicesters attacking attributes. They are a mid-table club now and should be seen in the same bracket as Stoke et al. Good players like Mahrez will always find the way into our teams though but Leicester should be watched with caution imo.

      Keep firminho.
      I didn't go for any of Coutinho/Firminho/Mane/Winaljdum/Llana.
Get feeling, its like rolling a dice every week, and kicking yourself. Or you'd need to double up to improve your odds.
You'd argue that coutinho ahead of winaljdum due to price, but i think the rest are priced about right.
Any of the above could have scored a brace, so wouldn't drop firminho.
I actually like the look of llana, get the feeling he'll be punching well above his weight this season.
Analysis urgently needed on this for the next scoutcast.

I'll keep Fuchs for at least another week. Might bench him against Arsenal, in favour of Friend though. Despite conceding two goals and getting a yellow card, his BPS was still petty decent.

Vardy looked better than Mahrez imo, just a shame about pens. Think i'm gonna keep for next week.

Gray looked just as good if not better than the other cheapies, didn't get on the scoresheet this week, gonna give him another couple weeks.

Points are coming for Firmino, I think he looked more threatening than Coutinho yesterday, just didn't get in the points. It happens.

They're the 3 I own and plan to keep them all.

Sold Long for Ibra as I had 5.0m ITB due to ditching Mkhi late for Oscar. Planned to get either in after GW1, having seen Long fail to score against Watford and now next up away to Utd I have ditched for Ibra. If he'd hauled I might have kept and got a 9.5m 5th mid in and gone 3-5-2 rotating Long and Gray but decided I don't want the hassle after all!

Keeping Firmino, next for the chop is Townsend for Redmond maybe.

Although I'd keep Sanchez, one game not enough to go on

i wanted to give everyone a few games but Mane/Coutinho do look like big points scorers, and Sanchez doesn't offer much up top

    Firmino > Coutinho or Lallana?
Main reason is to save some monies

Lallana isn't guaranteed starts when/if Sturridge is actually fit enough to start.

Keep firmino. OOP in a very attacking team. Proven goalscorer. The points will come.

He was lively as well - unlucky to get no points

Two points ahead of my rival.

I have Hazard. He has Costa and Willian. Any predictions?

A Costa red card for head butting Willian and spitting in Hazard's face straight afterwards.

    De Gea
    Azpi Shaw Stones
    Tadic Firmino Lamela Redmond
    Gray Zlat Kun

1.0m ITB... With Southampton playing at Man United should I ditch one of Tadic/Redmond?
    If so, who for who?

Seeing as you've got both I'd maybe get Siggy or Barkley in for Tadic, but wait till Thursday or Friday

    Foster / Jaku
    Valencia / Stones / Kone / Friend / Amat
    Firmino / Oscar / Lamela / Redmond / Capoue
    Aguero / Ibra / Vardy

    a) Stones -> Jags/Williams, I'd like an Everton defender
    b) Vardy -> 6.5 , to free up cash for midfield?
    c) save FT

Is Carroll expected to lead the line for West Ham every game?

    Valdes - Jaku
    Valencia - Van Dijk - Stones - Friend - B. Smith
    Mahrez - Firmino - Townsend - Redmond - Capoue
    Kun - Ibra - Gray

    1m ITB

Would you change B. Smith (didn't play) to Amat or Kingsley or save the FT for now? Which one of the Swansea players is more nailed for long term?

    Thanks!
