This morning we take a look at our latest captain poll, assessing the likely favourites for the armband in Gameweek 3.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We predicted that Sergio Aguero (13.1) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) would slug it out at the summit of the Gameweek 2 captain poll. They not only dominated voting but both excelled, bringing in a brace, maximum bonus and a 26-point Fantasy Premier League haul to those who chose to captain them.

We expect more of the same this Gameweek as Manchester City’s Aguero hosts a West Ham side that has looked disjointed due to injuries so far this campaign.

Meanwhile, the Manchester United frontman, who at 51% ownership has overtaken the 50.2% owned Aguero as FPL’s most popular player, visits a Hull side that have won both their opening fixtures. In the big Swede’s favour, the Tigers have conceding the third highest number of shots in the box of any Premier League side to date.

However, there could be a third protagonist to upset this duo’s dominance, with the 22.9% owned Eden Hazard (10.1) bringing in attacking points in both matches under Antonio Conte. The Chelsea wide man entertains a Burnley outfit that have conceded more shots than any side this season.

For those eyeing up a differential armband candidate, Southampton midfielders Dusan Tadic (7.4) and Nathan Redmond (6.1) look ideally placed. Although Tadic has yet to register attacking returns, his strong underlying statistics suggest that could change when Sunderland visit. The Serbian’s ownership in FPL is now down to just 4.6% after being discarded by more than 42,000 managers.

Nathan Redmond, who sits in 11% of FPL managers’ sides, has a goal to his name already and looks set to profit from his out of position striker role in this potentially prosperous encounter.

Ibrahimovic’s team mate Paul Pogba (8.5) offers another intriguing alternative armband option, following a strong debut in Gameweek 2 at home to Southampton.

After two matches without a goal, the 16.4% owned Harry Kane (11.0) will be lucky to register significant interest. The Spurs striker has continued to struggle in front of goal without the suspended Mousa Dembele in the side and, in Gameweek 2, his star waned further when he was forced into a number 10 role to accommodate Vincent Janssen (8.0), who was Tottenham’s most attacking player against Crystal Palace. Visitors Liverpool have already shipped five goals this season, but it could be the 1.9% owned Janssen who prospers rather than Kane.

Another of last season’s stars to fall out of favour this term is Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez, who has been jettisoned by 35,000 FPL managers already this Gameweek on the back of two relatively poor displays from last season’s champions. A home tie against Swansea, however, could be the ideal fixture for the 27.9% owned midfielder to prove he is worthy of a price hike to 9.5 this season.

    Foster
    Shaw Stones Amat
    Hazard Sánchez Tadic Ramirez
    Aguero Ibra Diomande
    Jak Capoue Friend McAuley
Already wasted transfers to get Ibra. Probably ok for next week so WC can wait? Capoue ruled out and no Gray, Sanchez not hot but I might just wait at least a week before jumpin on WC?

At least 6 of those must be crap shots from Coutinho from 30 yards out.

That stat could easily be skewed by the 1,000 shots Liverpool, and in particular Coutinho, made from 20 yards out last gw.

Same Aguero or Ibra captain decision for me this week and I'm not looking forward to 5 days of swapping torture.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    How patient are you?

Do you have a set time or criteria for a player that is underperforming to be shown the exit?

I ask this as many of those with a strong fixture and underlying stats like Tadic are being jettisoned very quickly. Even those like Vardy, Kane and Mahrez are being discarded, after just two gameweeks.

Do you think the patient will be rewarded? Or do you think the knee jerkers will claim bragging rights?

Depends on the alternatives. With Ibra's high ownership it's almost impossible not to sell Vardy or Kane for him. I think it's a bit different in middfield, apart from Hazard none of the popular picks on here scored fpl points in 2 consecutive games. Tadic is def one to keep if you have him.

I think it really depends on the situation.

This year I had a good start so I can afford to be patient, save transfers etc.

But if I had a slow start and was struggling to catch up, I go into panic mode (like last season)

I think you need a bit of luck and a healthy mix of both.

I tend to be less patient at this stage of the season when the market is volatile and prices are all over the place. Firmino may have got one or two more weeks out of me further down the line but with him due for a drop and Barkley on another rise, I moved early.

Had to move Tadic to Redmond in order to fund Eriksen-Haz which looks a big upgrade.

Didn't want to lose Tadic but hoping I won't be burnt too badly as I still have attacking cover for the nice fixture.

I think it has been easier to be patient (so far) this season as Ibra aside, there have been no really outstanding options that weren't already in our squads. For me, no obvious alternatives to Tadic, Townsend, Long who all have great fixtures this week. However, I'm not happy about the price drops that I've had and another set of blanks might see me make wholesale changes!

Tadic is a long term plan. Vardy was always an exit route to Ibrahimovic.

Last season I persisted with players who continually frustrated me by showing just enough potential to make me believe. This season, I'm being ruthless. Considering a hit to do Gray to Negredo; have already jettisoned Ivanovic for Shaw. Cut and run - if they show form afterwards I'll switch them back in.

At the beginning of the season with price drops have to move quickly - wish I'd jumped on teh Ibra bandwagon last week but didn't due to fear of points hit but Vardy was just so disappointing!

To me it's not about a fixed set of gameweeks or about being patient - It depends on whether your original thesis has changed - for example at the start of the season I chose vardy because I thought he would score about 180 points this season.. but his not being on pens has caused me to revise my view

Likewise for Ibra, I wasn't certain if he could adjust to the EPL and wasn't certain if he was on pens.. these two weeks have given me confidence to back him so I've done the swap..

If your thesis (to why you chose the player in the first place) still remains the same then there is absolutely no reason to make the transfer. Doing so it what I would call kneejerking.

It depends... I'm being patient with Tadic (because he's the most dangerous Saints' player) - but is everyone else? If he blanks against Sunderland, that will be it.

Trying to be patient this year and only transfer out players who are playing badly, rather then just because they haven't got a goal/assist/big haul as missed out on some big points last year because of this.

Hence I've held onto Costa and Tadic but ditched Eriksen. If I'm still in 500,000th place after 2 more gameweeks I may resort to a knee jerk wildcard however!

    28. Michael_Scott
      • 16 Years

It depends because sometimes patience is just blidness or stubbornness to stick with a particular player.

2/3 games I normally give... I have firminio and it's likely I'll transfer him out this week.

For me it's all about the underlying numbers. Tadic has strong numbers so it would appear he's been unlucky not to get some returns. On top of this, southampton have also looked fairly dangerous in both their matches, even with one being against United.
On the other hand I'm looking for get rid of Phillips & Eriksen as their underlying numbers, and that our their respective teams, are low and it would appear that a lack of FPL returns is only going to continue...

Normally too patient, however, had to accept Kane without Dembele and playing deeper had to go. Firmino looking like a price drop and only 1 shot on target so far and needed extra .6 to finance Kane->Ibra soo Firmino->Barkley. Also have Tadic but like others definitely keeping, however, if blanks against Sunderland will definitely need a rethink.

    32. Still Unsure

It depends on the replacement options. If there are many good players to replace yours that aren't performing, I'm more inclined to change it.

forced into Ayew out through injury but brought in Ibra as he can obviously cause a great deal of damage quickly.
current ranking 700k which is way better than 2.6m same time last season and prompted an early WC in GW3.
whole squad are regular starters, slight concern over defence but not serious enough for any rash actions

Extremely patient. It's not really about patience though. It's more a trust thing. There are levels of trust that develop with a player.

For example, removing Mahrez from your team when he has already scored a goal, sits on penalties and has just scored a 200 points plus in a season, is nonsensical. You would trust him to deliver even if he went a couple of gameweeks with blanks.

Tadic, I'm afraid is a different case entirely. He is what I call a nearly-man of fantasy football and has not delivered the consistency needed to be trusted in my team. Yes, his stats look good and the heat maps show promise aplenty but it is another matter entirely when it comes to delivering the points that matter.

Then there is Shane Long. Scored 10 goals last season and with an injury free season ahead of him, hopefully, I am prepared to show patience and trust him to come good. He has a good fixture this week and I am expecting a good return.

Trust is an important commodity in fantasy football. I don't believe you can train for it because it is something instinctive that looks different in all of us. When I see a knee jerking fantasy player, I know they are setting themselves up for failure. They make a transfer during the game or before the gameweek has even finished. You just know that they are doomed no matter what you say to them.

      Trust your players, trust yourself.

I've got Valencia, Shaw and Ibrahimovic and Aguero and Stones (presumably like you 😀 ), yeah it is a bit of a concern, but hopefully I'll have 2 FT the week before and might have moved Stones on by then. Unfortunate part of the game.

What are people's thoughts on Nolito? Hazard's price rise has priced him out for the time being and Man City look food in attack. Don't know much about Nolito and I don't really fancy Sterling long term.

They do look good in attack, but remember he came on as a sub, so seems to be a rotation risk and won't be getting that many minutes it seems for now.

How do prices of the hazard s agueros and ibras rise without prices like Kane or Sanchez falling?
You can only really upgrade to the big hitters by selling similarly priced big hitters.
So the sales surely a ad to drops too?

    Would you WC this:

    Valencia > Shaw
    Stones > Williams
    Pieters > McAuley
    Souare > Friend
    Mahrez > Hazard
    Firmino > Coutinho
    Wilson > Negredo

Already missed out on 0.4m in price rises (McAuley, Hazard, Coutinho, Negredo) this GW

    1. FF Dirtbag

Valencia to shaw is sideways, Mcauley is totally a kneejerk (I guess you have foster in goal anyway), Firmino to coutinho is meh and not worth it. And who knows how williams is going to play. So no?

      1. Jafooli

Valencia to Shaw is purely for price rise, reckon he'll get a double minimum this week.

Had planned McAuley before the goal, but Ayew got injured.
