Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 9

We’ve now launched our latest captain poll to canvas your opinion on the likely favourites and differential options for the armband in Gameweek 9.

Saturday’s two goals has seen Theo Walcott (7.8) continue to emerge as a viable captaincy alternative to Alexis Sanchez (11.3) in the Arsenal attack.

Following that brace against Swansea, Walcott welcomes a Middlesbrough side to the Emirates with just a single clean sheet to their name. No player has had more shots on target than the England international, who has also scored five times in the league and is currently the most popular transfer target ahead of Gameweek 9.

Sanchez, who is in 23.7% of FPL teams, has been no slouch either this season with four goals and three assists. The Chilean, who clinched the top spot in the Captain Poll last time out, is expected to once again feature amongst the top candidates for the armband in Gameweek 9. Team-mate Mesut Ozil (9.5) also offered a reminder of his armband potential with a goal against Swansea on Saturday.

Manchester City serve up a variety of choices this week, but with a resolute Southampton side visiting the Etihad, leading captaincy contenders Sergio Aguero (13.1) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.6) may have to toil for points.

City could also be weary after their Champions League exertions against Barcelona and up against a Saints outfit who may well shuffle the pack for their own European tie on Thursday to preserve some legs.

Claude Puel’s side have two clean sheets on the road already, and Aguero’s stock as a captain took a major dent in Gameweek 8 when he finished with negative points after emerging from the bench to miss a penalty.

De Bruyne also fluffed his lines from the spot on Saturday, although with eight goal attempts against Everton, he was City’s most vibrant threat on goal. Following an injury lay off the Belgian differential is only owned by 8.7% of FPL managers, compared to Aguero’s 44.8%.

With West Brom visiting, Liverpool’s midfielders continue to offer strong alternatives.

But, as ever, deciding which of Sadio Mane (9.0), Roberto Firmino (8.5) or Philippe Coutinho (8.3) will rack up the highest points tally may prove too difficult.

West Ham’s home encounter with a Sunderland side without an away clean sheet, presents Dimitri Payet (9.4) as a key captaincy contender. The Black Cats are winless and have shipped 15 goals in their eight Premier League outings – they will surely be stretched to contain Payet’s influence.

For those who favour form over fixture, the Premier League’s Golden Boot leader Diego Costa looks an enticing option for Chelsea’s home clash with Man United.

The Blues striker has seven goals this term and, with maximum FPL bonus points from just one goal over the weekend, looks to have upped his all-round game. It is little wonder Costa has already earned a price hike this week to 10.2 and seen his ownership soar to 32.4%.

Romelu Lukaku’s (9.4) strike at the Etihad took his tally to six goals in five outings, yet he travels to a Burnley side that have yet to ship more than a single goal in any of their five matches at Turf Moor.

Leicester City’s plum home clash with Palace’s porous defence looks promising, yet Claudio Ranieri seems to have stepped up his penchant for rotation and is likely to deter most.

Islam Slimani has netted twice in two top-flight appearances at the King Power Stadium and could be a real differential with under 2% ownership.

With 13 goals conceded in their last three fixtures, Hull City have swiftly switched from surprise package to whipping boys over the first nine Gameweeks.

This could make Stoke’s 1.3% owned midfielder Marko Arnautovic (7.2), who had four goal attempts against Sunderland at the weekend, an intriguing captaincy candidate when he visits the KC Stadium on Saturday.

Joe Allen – second only to Walcott as a current transfer target – could even tempt some as an option having returned four goals in his last four Premier League outings.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    Sanchez for me next week.

Can't trust City at the moment, especially with a tough mid-week game. (Which I'm going to so will report back on overall performance).

I'm thinking Aguero - as it'll be one of those weeks where many will avoid. But will wait until after the CL to decide.

    After having my worst gw in my fpl history.. my team looks okay for next week;

    Pickford (whu)

    Lovren(WBA) - Williams(bur) - Koscielny (MID)
    Snodgrass(STK) - Antonio(SUN) - Sanchez(MID) - Firmino(WBA)
    Benteke(lei) - Lukaku(bur) - Aguero(SOU)

    Foster(liv) - Capoue(swa) - Amat(WAT) - Evans(liv)

1 FT 0.7 ITB- thinking to upgrade Antonio - Walcott however Sunderland at home would be a risky game to drop Antonio for.

    Should I save transfer?

    Thanks,

You could cash in on Capoue to give yourself an extra .5.

Something I'm considering for next week.

Said before this gameweek that if Antonio didn't deliver points against cpl I was dropping. Just got the funds to do Antonio to Walcott so am going to pull the trigger before next price rises. (Middlesbrough didn't offer much against Watford and only one clean sheet so can't ignore Wally imo).

Have almost similar team and who would have thought that you can get only 20 points with this team. Of course Aguero (C) for me didn't help. 🙂

Very weird GW, some people are talking about 60,70 points they got and I'm hoping Firmino doesn't get a YC today to get 22 points 🙂 That's the spirit I'm in after disastrous GW 🙂

I think we'll be fine, it happens I guess. 🙂

How's that possible, it doesn't add up if you count the points? Did you already make a transfer or do you have more than one player left (Firmino, Lovren)?

You played both Sanchez and Lukaku, right?

Thanks mate, wish you all the best, too.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Sanchez v Walcott or just get both.

Is Walcott now a better option than Sanchez, or with their kind fixtures is it better to double up?

I think with their upcoming fixtures and Arsenals goal scoring ability having both is a good option. Can always change it up after the good fixture run - e.g Sanchez out for KDB. Took a risk with an early transfer and did Antonio to Walcott yesterday.

In the long run I think they could go close as long as Walcott keeps starting. The money saved is a no brainer if it keeps up but both is a potentially good option too.

Right now I'm not looking at a way to get Sanchez in. I'm hoping he's about to go through a quiet patch. I'll keep faith in Firmino, Sterling and Walcott.

A lot also still depends on Ibra for me (if I can ever hit that transfer out button). With him in my team it makes Sanchez very difficult.

If he doesn't perform I might look at bringing in Sanchez but otherwise I'm going to go without and hope for the best.

I bought Walcott a couple of GWs ago because it would have taken a hit to bring in Sanchez, but their stats were so similar I didn't think it was worth it. Sanchez blanked in the following game and Wally got that controversial assist, plus a brace this weekend, so I'm pretty happy so far!

Can't help but feel I might be riding my luck a bit going without Sanchez, though. I do have funds in the bank to get him or KDB, so will be keeping an eye on both.

I've been on Sanchez wagon for the whole season long so far. Didn't feel the need of doubling on with Wally, but now I am getting him in, no other chance. Especially with thos fixtures for Arsenal and their capability of scoring 3+ goals in EVERY game.
I'll most likely go with Sterling+Antonio ➡ Wally+Arnie for my 2 FTs and change my City double for Arsenal double attacking assets.

Get both. I made the stupid mistake of not hitting in Wally for Antonio this week, having planned it over the whole two week international break. Suffice to say I have now doubled up.

When you have both, you have flexibility to decide who goes first when the fixtures stiffen. You can either do a straight swap of Sanchez to KDB, or downgrade Wally to upgrade some like Stirling/Antonio/Son to KDB.

P.s. Do you think I am looking at getting KDB in? I think he will be the highest scoring mid this season. I just want to ride the next two fixtures for Arsenal and then decide my KDB path.

I brought in Walcott this week and captained him. I still have ibra so might be ditching him and bring in Sanchez.

Historically Arsenal normally have a very poor November... so I might hang on a bit before I double up.

I didn't realise that they have Spurs and United in November. I might look st KDB instead, much better fixtures and city don't have the November jinx that Arsenal seem to have.

There's no right anwser, who's to say Ozil wont beat them both over next couple of games. I think long term Alexis your best bet but thats why he so expensive, certyainly nothing wrong with doubling up but id be wary of only having Theo, the historical warning signs are there

This is an excellent article - written before the swansea game that shows exactly why Walcott is a great option.

Wenger has gone back to his most successful tactic of the past in the Bergkamp and Henry era...this means the front players are fluid...which in particular is drawing players out and handing Walcott space on a plate.

I think it depends on when Giroud is fully fit. Right now we're pretty sure Sanchez going to start up front. For now, if Sanchez continue to play up front and Walcott in the wings, I think it is worth it to double up, considering that Walcott didn't cost much below 8 mil.

That said, I would wait until europa/champions league before transferring any players in/out despite risking 0.1 mil rise/drop.

Sanchez for me. I think if any team should have double mids it's Liverpool. Sanchez will score steadily but Liverpool points are far more spread out and given their similar goals tally to Arsenal it's safer to have two of theirs.

picked Sanchez ever since he arrived in Premiership.
have gone without this season and brought in Walcott 3 weeks ago.
I always try and balance the team with certain amounts of cash for defs, mids etc.
Way I'm seeing it at the moment is Walcott + Firmino+ Sterling out weighs Sanchez + 2 lower priced starting mids. maybe wrong way of looking at it.

3.5m diff is too much money to have tied up.

    30. Ruth_NZ
      • 9 Years

Both have to be considered on their own merits.

When starting regularly, Walcott is a 9.0m+ midfielder for 7.8m. So that's simple. He's in.

Sanchez is a deadly performer when playing centrally, less so when wide. There looks to be no doubt that he's currently Wenger's preferred #9. So he's in too until such time as Giroud and/or Perez start to get games in the PL.

Arsenal have virtually qualified for the KO stage of the CL already. So there should be no rotation issue on that score. Looks likely that 'squad' players will get their gametime there.

That makes 'both' the answer. 🙂

Hmmm... I have been thinking about getting both (currently just have Sanchez) but after chatting with some of my Arsenal fan colleagues I'm holding off from getting Theo for now. None of them rate him at all and they were more upset by his misses this gameweek, than they were happy about his brace. So I'm not sure if his recent points are at all sustainable.

I may well live to regret the decision though!

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 9

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 11am tomorrow (Tuesday) and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 2pm by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 83m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article on Tuesday, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual the day before the first match of the Gameweek.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

    Foster
    Williams Vertonghen McAuley
    Antonio Sterling Walcott Firmino
    Ibra Kun Benteke

    Jaku Capoue Amat Souare

Been below average 3 of the last 4 GW. Currently at 23pts this GW.

    Any suggestions?

    Better option:

    A) Antonio to Son/Siggy

    B) Antonio & Snodgrass to Alli & J.Allen (-4)

    Too soon bring Siggy in?
Son surely a rotation risk one more IT break after GW11.
Alli seems to be the safer bet right now.

    Pickford - Foster
    Baines(!) - Valencia(!) - Smith - Evans(!) - Amat
    Sanchez - Mane - Antonio(!) - Snodgrass - Capoue
    Aguero - Costa - Benteke

    Few questions in regards to this team;
    1) Obviously some sort of a defensive change is required, Valencia/Baines/Evans to Holebas looks tempting.

    2) Antonio feels like dead weight atm but has a tasty fixture. With other options such as Walcott, Siggy and Son doing well surely I should get rid?

Based on the above, I'm very tempted by Valencia/Baines > Holebas and Antonio > Walcott for a hit. Thoughts?

Save FT or cash in on Capoue > Fletcher for 0.5?

    Pickford (Foster)
Mustafi - WIlliams - Collins (Amat, Evans)
Sanchez - Mane - Sterling - Antonio (Capoue)
    Aguero - Lukaku - Austin

Baines was supposed to be fit this gw as per Koeman's presser but still didn't play. Time to dump him as he's obviously being overlooked for reasons other than fitness?

No, he's surely not a priority transfer out this week. If it happens again, then yes. Oviedo didn't exactly have the best of games. Worth seeing if he gets back in the team, Burnley is a good fixture for him.

    3. The Man Pastore
      • 9 Years

I don't think it is due to any other reason than fitness. I just don't think he was 100% and Koeman didn't want to rush him in. I would personlly wait for more news this week.

great question. Been thinking this too. He's playing a similar role, but getting forward more regularly.

I think he's worth a punt as a fourth mid - but the only problem with that is that it is inflexible.

As a fifth mid he looks great, especially if you have a small injury or a suspension to another player in your front 8. Certainly gives more options than Capoue currently.

He is better than Capoue, more attacking role and better stats.

I dont see him as a viable 4th long term but you could rise his form and fixtures for a few games.

Teams with Capoue 4th mf have got a bit lucky as its an easy swap without a team restructure and associated hits.

    5. KDF
      • 7 Years

I posted last week that I believe Allen is Capoue MK2, if he continues to play in the 10 role then he will get points way above his cost (4.8). I am not convinced he is going to get a load of goals but he will be heavily involved.
Stoke have good fixtures and the beauty is if Bony gets sharper in front of goal then all of a sudden there are some potentially serious assist points.
