Scout Notes – Champions League – Wednesday

Ten goals, two hat-tricks and a big bag of mixed fortunes for the English sides on an eventful second night of Champions League action. Here are the notes from an eventful evening in Europe…

Arsenal 6 Ludogorets Razgrad 0

Mesut Ozil (9.5) might have reined in the assists this season, but the German’s 7.7% of FPL owners won’t care if he can continue a new-found taste for goals.

Ozil hit the first hat-trick of his career in the demolition of Ludogorets. He’s also scored three in the league, pointing to a man, and a team, in a very good place at present.

Speaking post-match, Arsene Wenger talked up the playmaker’s goal threat.

“He looks like he’s got a taste to score goals because he runs in behind more. Before, he only liked coming to the ball and providing, but we want him to be a provider and a scorer. It looks like he’s slowly moving towards that better balance.”

Wenger made four changes from the side that beat Swansea City at the weekend, with David Ospina (4.8) given his now standard Euro night in goal, Kieran Gibbs in at left back for Nacho Monreal (6.0), fit-again Francis Coquelin (4.3) replacing Granit Xhaka (5.3) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (5.8) preferred to Alex Iwobi (5.8).

The in-form duo of Alexis Sanchez (11.3) and Theo Walcott (7.9) also scored, as did Oxlade-Chamberlain. Two assists came from substitute Lucas Perez (8.0), while Oxlade-Chamberlain, Santi Cazorla (7.5) and that man Ozil also chipped in – his first assist in ten appearances this season.

Cazorla was the first to be substituted on the night, with Wenger revealing:

“He (Cazorla) got a kick, and I took him off as quickly as possible. He got a kick on the back of his Achilles tendon. In my view, he was limping a little bit so I didn’t want to take a gamble.

Walcott and Sanchez – the current top two in this week’s Captain Poll – were also replaced in the second period, which bodes well for their freshness this weekend. Wenger explained his decision to withdraw the Chilean on 73 minutes:

“I just wanted to give him a breather. He looks alright physically.”

The opposition might have been lacking, but Arsenal currently offer Fantasy talent across the pitch, with five clean sheets and 19 goals scored in their last six matches in all competitions.

They face Middlesbrough at home followed by Sunderland away next.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Gibbs, Coquelin, Cazorla (Elneny 57), Walcott (Lucas 62), Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sanchez (Iwobi 72).
Subs not used: Cech, Gabriel, Monreal, Xhaka.

Barcelona 4 Manchester City 0

Pep Guardiola’s return to the Nou Camp couldn’t have gone much worse, although the emphatic scoreline spoke little of City’s performance and much about a disastrous piece of goalkeeping by Claudio Bravo (5.5).

The man brought in for his ability to play the ball out from the back ended up being sent off for handball outside the area after passing straight to Luis Suarez when the match was still poised at 1-0.

City’s ten men then capitulated, with Lionel Messi grabbing a hat-trick as Barca ruthlessly punished individual errors by the visitors.

From a Fantasy perspective, the match itself was perhaps overshadowed by Guardiola’s decision to leave Sergio Aguero (13.1) on the bench.

His 44.8% ownership will be relieved to hear it was merely a tactical choice – the City coach deciding to pack the midfield – rather than any concerns over his fitness.

“He (Aguero) didn’t warm up but it was okay – I wanted one more midfield player in that position and that was the reason why he didn’t start. I spoke with him and he was good. The decision was made this afternoon. So we are disappointed tonight, but we knew from the beginning it would be a tough group – now we have to focus on Southampton.”

Despite that re-assurance, the mere fact that Guardiola felt he was able to start without Aguero puts a different perspective on matters at the Etihad.

Aguero has hardly been seen as a rotation risk but, having benched him for the last two outings; the City boss has clearly made a statement that casts new doubt on Aguero’s security. It also fired up unwanted speculation about the relationship between the striker and his manager.

Guardiola has more immediate concerns, with Pablo Zabaleta (4.8) sustaining a foot injury. Already deprived of Bacary Sagna (5.4), potentially until mid-November, his side’s defensive fragility won’t be improved by losing another experienced full back.

City trialled a three-man defence in the 1-1 draw with Everton. Unless Zabaleta’s injury is a minor one, Guardiola might have to choose between continuing with that experiment or blooding inexperienced full-back Pablo Maffeo (4.5) against Southampton.

Man City XI: Bravo, Zabaleta (Clichy 57), Stones, Otamendi, Kolarov, Fernandinho, Silva, De Bruyne, Nolito (Caballero 57), Gundogan (Aguero 79), Sterling.
Subs not used: Fernando, Maffeo, Sane, Navas.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

The discussion around Aguero has turned swiftly from Must Have to Don’t Captain to Considering Going Without over this week.

Two benchings have played a significant factor and Ruth NZ’s post lays out how over his career Guardiola has had issues with strikers before. http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/10/19/the-digest-gameweek-8-5/?hc_page=14#hc_comment_14305533

I thought I’d take that discussion to the next stage – a stage that Mark was mocked for on the Scoutcast last season and a stage that no one had ever contemplated back in GWK 1.

That next stage is……drum roll…dropping Aguero.

So if we were to do that what would our teams look like?

I thought I’d have a look at my front 8 and see how it could be improved without Aguero.

The results are in, and I must say I like it a lot.

    Sanchez Walcott KDB Lallana Capoue
    Costa Lukaku Wilson

With Sanchez, KDB, Lukaku and Costa I’ve a captaincy choice every week.

Naturally I’m far too dull to do it.

    But are you?

Have a tinker with your team sans Aguero and tell us what you come up with? Is it better than with your Aguero-ed team?

Dare you ditch the man who we once relied on?

      6 games, 2 non pens, 0 assists.

his best score this season without penalties would have been about 8. for 13mil pens should put the cherry on the icing, not be required to bail him out so often. for a player half the price like milner it's fine to be so reliant.

i'm confused as much as anything, come on kun, snap out of it

It's a slight devil's advocate post....but the way his stock is falling how long will it be before we start seeing sales.

Already today for my regular Radio Yorkshire GWK preview I've been asked to answer that very question of whether we should be looking to dump Aguero.

It looks good on paper but I wouldnt feel safe without Aguero. If he does score 5 again then we're in a mess of a situation and will have to take points hits to chase our rivals. I think right now we're over thinking this and making it harder than it needs to be. Remember Doosra this time last year?

I actually missed Aguero's 25 point haul last year and my major rival in my ML captained him. I did manage to catch up again and ended the season on a decent ranking. So, missing a haul doesn't necessarily condemn you although, it did hurt at the time

I've been toying with wildcarding and dropping Aguero for a few weeks now. Don't quite have the guts to but, assuming I can change my defence as well, I get to the following front 8:

Firmino, Walcott, Sanchez, De Bruyne, Allen,

      Costa, Lukaku, Austin

I am only worried about Aguero being dropped against some of the bigger, more possession / pressing based teams (Liverpool, Arsenal etc) but, I cannot see him being benched against the lesser teams. Although City did look like they missed his finishing last night so, hard to tell.

      Mine would be

Sanchez Walcott KDB Stoke Mid(probably Allen) Liverpool Mid/Alli

      Costa Lukaku Wilson/Austin.

Would prefer Austin but maybe after Soton fixture eases up a bit.
I don't fancy a Liverpool mid to be honest. The points are too spread out to my liking. But they'll be in my watchlist. I would prefer Alli to them.

DON'T DROP AGUERO. he's by far the best player and most explosive in the game. Also will be a huge captaincy percentage weekly no matter who he plays. All that happens is you drop him till he explodes then you panic him back into your team costing you points for a hit or 2

One Rule I've stuck to that always makes me climb up the ranks.

When people start talking about ditching Aguero, now is the time to captain him.

He's far far too good to suddenly become bad overnight.

He'll probably score a hat trick now against South Hampton to prove everyone wrong. especially after the penalty miss and being benched against Barcelona.

Well I'm a guy who plays without Kun as a rule and I must say it is really fun and challenging. So for me your fear of "not having Aguero" is completely unknown 🙂
I agree that if you compare Aguero to any other player he's better, no doubt about it, but this is a game where we managing teams not individuals. In my opinion you can create teams without Aguero that will compete or even surpass the ones with him.
Hell, I play with basically only one striker last three GW (Costa) and I'm sitting at OR 36k, my best so far in 3 years of my career. No Aguero doesn't mean end of the world.

The difference is when you captain him and he scores 5 goals.

Pretty much no one else does that in the premier league. except maybe Sanchez.

One captain on a score like that can jump you up the ranks massively.

The amount of times I've stuck with Aguero when others are dropping him and I've jumped into the top 10k is ridiculous. Biggest differential every season for me.

I just can't picture my team without Aguero or Sanchez.

Like I said before, I agree he's the BEST fantasy asset if compared one-to-one with anybody but his price means sacrifices in other positions in your team. He will score a lot, no doubt about it, probably on Sunday with Saints, but let's say Costa/Austin are doing the same now, Kane is capable aswell, maybe even Lukaku.

Moreover his dull performances last couple weeks causing that captaincy option moves from him to free scoring Arsenal mids at least for next 2 GW, and if you dig deeper in any given GW, there's always somebody who could be considered as good captaincy option, not as "safe" as Aguero, but they are there.
I'm a Pep type of manager, I love midfield, there's ton of points in it.

Not trying to convince anybody to change his/her playstyle, just saying that it is possible to live without Aguero. it's a matter of personal approach to this game, so disscusion about it is a little bit academic but hey, that's what forum is for 😛

Was thinking about ditching during the International break but couldn't get around to actually doing that.

      Front 8 would be
      Sanchez KdB Firmino Walcott Allen
      Costa Lukaku Austin/Wilson

Allows flexibility of playing both the formations 352/343

Also will only be 2 transfers away from getting Kun back if he explodes.
Something like Sanchez or KdB and Wilson out to Aguero and 4.5m mid with Allen as 4th mid.

did it 2 years ago for a whole season and got a top 3k finish.
Team was based around Costa, Ivanovic, Fab, Sanchez, Austin, Silva, Siggy and Kane.
Ivanovic tied up a lot of money that season. Think he started the season around 7m and finished around 9m for a defender!!

If citeh were awful attacking-wise then yeah. The problem is they're not. In fact had Kun been on from the start we may well have been talking about a sensational victory given the way they were cutting through Barca in the 1st half.
Not an obvious captaincy choice each week, but one of the top 3 most weeks, and the best by far some weeks.

I just don't see any draft here that looks much better than an Aguero-ful team, so considering all of the maneuvering to get him out, maximize the cash, and be "only two transfers away" from getting him back in, I would think only someone on a wild card would want to endeavor to complete what might be a series of sideways moves.

Most of these appear to have
      KDB / Sanchez / 8m LIV / 7.5m in the midfield
      Costa / Lukaku / 6.5m as forwards.

Not sure where the big improvement is when compared to the teams with Aguero -- is it basically KDB enabling both Costa and Lukaku instead of choosing one?

I wonder if it is a bit too early in the season for his price to be that big a difference maker since TVs are so similar?

This. Great summary there. I think it's too early to take action on these pep comments. Yes you can have good teams without him but he's the best striker in the league, he's the head of a Man City attack that has looked great at times. I also think he's that price for a reason and would take a much braver FPL manager than I to get rid.

Even leaves enough for 3 defenders like Walker, Kos and say Clyne for a 3-5-2.

      Sanchez, KdB, Firmino, Walcott, Chadli

      + 0.7 to improve defence

Sanchez to Payet/Alli/8-9m gives even greater boost for defence (2.7), which I might badly need when the CS tide turns, as well as an Austin upgrade. Kun (C) this week, will consider dropping depends on the performance.

      I've held off getting Coutinho in for Antonio or a hit for Ibra>Lukaku then Capue>Coutinho exactly for this reason. With 2 FT's next week I might take a hit and move Kun, Ibra and Antonio out for Costa, Lukaku and KdB leaving me thus;

      Firmino Walcott KdB Capoue (Fletcher)
      Costa Lukaku Benteke

With 2.6m ITB to sort Capoue or Fletcher out the following week. Tempting I must say....

Assuming a wild card team with current tv I get:-

      Heaton - Grant
      Bellerin - Rose - Clyne - Amat - Nyom
      Walcott - KdB - Firmino - Fer - Allen
      Costa - Lukaku - Rashford

Significant upgrade in defense with Bellerin coming in for Stones and Rose for Fuchs. Midfield/ Attack remains more or less the same.. So probably still be to rely on Aguero.

who to be the 4th and fifth midfielder?
    A) snodrass and capoue

Snodgrass is the only midfielder approaching viable from those three imo; Capoue / Allen will only chip in occasionally at best in my opinion. But, personally I don't think he's a good enough option for a fourth midfielder:

      - 50% of the players having above 5.0 form are midfielders and out of the top ten, seven are midfielders. This suggests to me to put money into our fourth (and possibly fifth) midfielder especially when rivals will have Lallana, Antonio, Walcott, Son, Sigurdsson as 4th midfielders.
      - Hull looked dire last match and it is far harder to score if your team is playing poorly

I would go Allen over Capoue for fifth midfielder though!

      Let me know your thoughts!

        now my front 8 is
        sanchez payet firmino snod capoue
        aguero lukaku deeney
and i have 2 free transfers
and i don't know who to get and i want to use 1 free transfer at least
so i'm thinking getting allen over capoue as he has a very nice fixture
and bench him this week and next week i'll have 2 ft and play allen

    Heaton, Pickford
    Valencia, Williams, Holebas, Evans, Amat
    Mane, Sterling, Walcott, Snodgrass, Capoue
    Aguero, Ibra, Lukaku

    A. Capoue to Fletcher and save (on this at the moment)
    B. Ibra + Capoue to Sanchez + Diomande (352)
    C. Ibra + Snodgrass to Austin + Ozil (leaves 1m in the bank)
    D. To get my idea team would be a -8:
Ibra + Snodgrass + Capoue + Mane to Austin + Sanchez + Firmino + Fletcher

If your ideal team is option D, then make those moves, but perhaps stagger them. Just do Capoue to Fletcher, or perhaps Capoue & Ibra to Fletcher & Austin, then do the other 2 moves next week for a -4. Snodgrass has a reasonable fixture this week, so save that move for now, and Mane also has a good fixture this week.

Yes, thats the plan, although I'll stagger it out further cos Ibra v Burnley at home next week. Capoue to Fletcher this week then hopefully Mane to Firmino next. By that time though my ideal team will have changed most likely, but at least I'll have an extra 1m in the bank with no worse team

Boring transfer I know, but Capoue will drop eventually

Depends if that price drop will affect you and if you care about it! Saving for 2FTs is always a good idea

Is Son essential? currently I'm going for Wally - Sterling - Firmino - Coutinho (on WC)

He is not. Can you get Ozil or Sanchez for Coutinho?

I can, but I have to downgrade Deeney into Diomande and play Allen every week, worth the sacrifice?

      No way.
Liverpool's fixtures are great. Son isn't even assured of starts, let alone starts up front.
