Hall of Fame Analysis – Part Two

After looking at the strategies used by those in the top ten of our latest Hall of Fame refresh, this second part delves deeper into their player selection and will reveal their current template XI.

For those unfamiliar with the Hall of Fame, this is a ranking system applied to everyone who takes part in our Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues – both the free and members league. Managers’ performances are then traced to give a Hall of Fame rating.

The Live version is updated after each Gameweek and can be viewed by Members via this link.

The career version, which shows the standings at the end of each season, is free to view here or via the HoF tab in the main menu.

If you would like to know more about the Hall of Fame we have included a quick guide in this article. Alternatively, you can view this movie to listen to Mark and Rate My Team’s Chris Atkinson talk you through it.

Let’s now take a look at the current top ten HoF managers’ players and the template that has emerged from this elite group.

Goalkeepers

With only one top-ten manager group without Sunderland’s budget stopper Jordan Pickford (4.1), it is clear that the veterans are keen to gain as much value as possible in goal to protect funds to invest heavily elsewhere.

Even the 4.8-priced Burnley stopper Tom Heaton and West Brom’s Ben Foster are too expensive for the majority of managers: both feature in just three teams.

Hull City’s Eldin Jakupovic (4.0) is also owned by a trio of managers, while Stoke City’s Lee Grant (4.1) has been picked by just one of the HoF’s top managers.

But this may be a position many of the top ten may need to refresh.

Vito Mannone has returned to action for the Black Cats’ reserves to provide stiff competition to Pickford, Grant’s place looks far less assured now that Jack Butland is back in training, while Jakupovic has warmed the Hull bench since Gameweek 6.

Number one placed HoF manager Ville Ronka’s safety-first tactics extends to goalkeepers as he is the only one of this group to have selected both Heaton and Foster.

However, with some movement likely in this position, it would be no surprise to see Heaton’s ownership increase among the top ten over the coming Gameweeks.

Defenders

The search for value extends even further into defence: none of the top selected players cost more than 5.0.

Swansea City’s 4.1-priced defender Jordi Amat is the favoured pick, featuring in nine sides, though the arrival of Bob Bradley has seen him drop out of the starting XI, rendering the Spaniard an inactive benchwarmer.

The next most popular, with seven selections, is Watford wing-back Jose Holebas (4.8), who is suspended for Gameweek 12.

Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren (5.0) – whose price had dropped to 4.9 earlier this season – is the third most selected and found in six squads, while AFC Bournemouth’s Adam Smith – another player suspended for Gameweek 12 – (4.7) sits in four.

The joint fifth most popular, with three selections each are also at the lower end of the price scale, with Manchester City’s John Stones and Everton’s Ashley Williams priced at 5.0 and 5.1 respectively, and Stoke’s Erik Pieters costing just 4.5.

Premium defenders are rare selections among the HoF elite, with Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny (6.5) picked twice and his team-mate Hector Bellerin (6.6) claiming just one owner.

Marcos Alonso (6.0) could soon change that.

The Chelsea left wing-back, who scored and earned a clean sheet in Gameweek 11, is currently owned by two of the top ten.

With Gameweek 15 marking a significant shift in the Blues’ fixtures, there is a strong chance many of these Fantasy stalwarts may opt to invest in either the Spaniard or his team-mate Cesar Azpilicueta (6.1), who has earned FPL bonus points in four of his last five Gameweeks.

Midfielders

Alexis Sanchez (11.3) is one of only two players to feature in all the top ten squads. However, the Arsenal midfielder’s dominance may be short-lived.

A hamstring problem sustained during training for Chile this week has sparked significant sales, with Eden Hazard (10.1), who scored 19 FPL points in Gameweek 11, set to be the most popular replacement.

Five of our HoF top ten have already made at least one transfer during the international break, with the Chelsea winger expected to be their likely target.

The next most popular midfielder is Roberto Firmino (8.7), who sits in all but one of the HoF leaders’ sides. In six squads he is also paired with Philippe Coutinho (8.7), as this group seek to double up on Liverpool’s assets as a key strategy for success.

One squad has paired Firmino with Sadio Mane (9.0), while another has slotted in Adam Lallana (7.1) alongside the ‘false 9’.

Significantly, just one manager has a single Liverpool midfielder, tenth placed Chris Greene, who has opted for Mane as his only cover of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.

Joe Allen is the budget midfielder of choice with five votes.

The Stoke midfielder’s price slumped to 4.8 in Gameweek 6 and with a hike to 5.4 has already ensured he is a profitable recruit to the HoF leaders’ teams.

Ilkay Gundogan (5.8) has emerged as a challenger to Allen.

The Manchester City midfielder, who scored four times in two appearances across all competitions prior to Gameweek 11, is owned by three managers. The same number have Arsenal’s Theo Walcott (7.8) in their squads.

When it comes to benched fifth midfielders, Watford’s Etienne Capoue (5.0) and Darren Fletcher (4.4) of West Brom, are the key choices, with two selections apiece.

Nathan Redmond (6.0) is the final midfielder to mention; along with Lallana, he features in one of the ten ten squads.

Forwards

A far narrow pool of talent has emerged in attack, with three names dominating matters.

Like Sanchez, Sergio Aguero (13.1) features in every team.

The City striker’s captaincy potential is clearly the main draw, with all ten of this group handing him the armband in Gameweek 11.

Romelu Lukaku (9.8)’s consistency has also been a key factor, with the Belgian featuring in eight out of ten teams. Since his first start in Gameweek 3, Lukaku has delivered attacking returns in six out of nine Gameweeks.

Notably, Charlie Austin is by far the most popular third striker.

He sits in five squads, having cost as little as 6.2 in Gameweek 6, before rising to his current price of 6.7.

In the two teams that employ a 3-5-2 strategy, Adama Diomande (4.6) is the non-playing forward.

Other third strikers featured are Crystal Palace forward Christian Benteke (7.6), Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson (6.6), Watford’s Troy Deeney (7.1) and Marcus Rashford (6.8) of Manchester United, who all claim a single selection.

Chelsea’s improved fixtures in Gameweek 15 may see some of the HoF leaders turn their attention to Diego Costa.

Surprisingly, the Spain international is owned by just one of the top ten, despite scoring nine goals this season, amassing 73 points.

Top Ten HoF Template

Goalkeepers – Pickford (Heaton/Foster/Jakupovic)

Defenders –Amat, Holebas, Lovren, Smith (Stones/Williams/Pieters)

Midfielders – Sanchez, Firmino, Coutinho, Allen (Walcott/Gundogan)

Forwards – Aguero, Lukaku, Austin

Thoughts on tripling up on Liverpool midfielders within a 352?

What to be missed by tripling them?

Hazard, Arsenal mids, City mids, etc.

Too much risk if Liverpool unluckily have a bad day.

Given their fixtures I think it's a viable strategy

Something like Haz, firm, Cout, Lallana, Allen/Snod looks a good midfield in a 3-5-2

Viable. I don't see Mane as better than Hazard or KDB/Sanchez/Theo though. If you can afford one of those and all 3 Liverpool mids then go for it. Lallana is nice, but I think there are a few better options

As far as the eye can see. I plan my defence quite far ahead, in aim to minimise transfers required.

Mids/Fwds probably look about 10 weeks ahead or so, just to keep an eye on potential targets, but in terms of actually getting players in, only 4-5 weeks

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

    HoF Leaders' Template and Beyond

How many of the HoF template team do you own?

Which are you looking to move on and who comes in in their place?

Are you like them and perhaps worried about budget goalkeepers losing their place?

Will you, as we suspect they already have, go for Chelsea options, across many positions? Or are there current differentials that are being overlooked that in a few GWKs time could be part of the template?

As a recap here's the HoF Top 10's template

    Goalkeepers – Pickford (Heaton/Foster/Jakupovic)

Defenders –Amat, Holebas, Lovren, Smith (Stones/Williams/Pieters)

Midfielders – Sanchez, Firmino, Coutinho, Allen (Walcott/Gundogan)

    Forwards – Aguero, Lukaku, Austin

I've spent 16 (16!) points this week on getting a 4 5 1 formation. Big hitters in midfield and decent defenders, two dummies as striker bench fodder with Kun up front. Wondering if this'll be a success because just can't find value in the forwards..

9 of my 15 are listed there Jonty. Differentials mainly KDB, Defoe and Spurs & Arsenal defence. Will probably look to swap KDB to Hazard by GW15, which gets me closer to their template, as will getting Alonso in for one of the big defenders I guess. Not that I'll be making those moves to chase the template, more the points.

I have 11 of those players, plus Mustafi, Evans, Hazard & Fletcher. So, a pretty template team really.

"Template" often carries negative connotations but more me it's only a good thing. There are so many variations of a template team that the odds you'll have an identical team to one of your direct comtetitors is highly unlikely.

my next transfers over the next few GWs may be
      Sanch & Allen ------> Cout & Walcott
      A.smith & Mustafi --------> Alonso & 5.0 DEF

Currently own 8 from that template (11 if I include the players in brackets). I've already done Walcott to hazard - did it straight after the Chelsea Everton game to avoid price rises. Looking to move on alonso in the coming weeks.

Currently trying to figure out how to get coutinho in for a lpool double up but would mean either getting rid of Sanchez or downgrading Lukaku.

10 of my 15 listed. I go Hazard in for Payet before the last GW and have gotten Alonso in for Bellerin this GW.
The one from that template that I don't own and am quite scared of not owning is Coutinho!
Lukaku's fix turning soon and if he starts to look a bit hit n miss will find a way to bring Kane in I think! Prob gonna captain him this week though in saying that 🙂

11, but hoping Sanchez to Hazard will be a popular transfer so I have 12. The main differences to my team are in defence where I have Friend, McAuley and Grant. If Pickford keeps his place then I will transfer Grant to Pickford when Butland is back.

I had 12 last week, now "only" 10, after making Sánchez and Smith 》Hazard and Alonso.
I think/hope that my differential vs HoF top 10 could be my defence: Koscielny Alonso Walker Holebas Amat

Your defence will be the same as mine, except that I have Azpilicueta instead of Alonso.
My attack is similar to the HoF template apart from having Costa and Hazard instead of Aguero and Sanchez.
I also hope that sacrificing Aguero and Sanchez for a strong defence will prove to be a good differential - it was last week when I scored 94.

IMO next week's template is more important than last week's, so we should be trying to anticipate the new template rather than trying to catch up with the old one.

Jonty - have you done this analysis in previous seasons?

Mainly curious whether the obvious lack of investment in keepers/defence is a reaction this season to large midfield options and Kun's high price or a common theme over the seasons?

Cheap gk (4.5) is the norm most seasons. There's always a heaton. Cheap defenders also the norm early on. I think tho there's been a greater focus on price tho because of the need to spend heavy in attack. There's no Mahrez or Alli this season.

I had 9 but I did 2 transfers so I'm left with 7. Doing pretty well by my standard. 50K rank overall.

      The difference are

      ..Amat -> Kingsley. Smith->Azpi Lovren->Walker
..Sanchez > Ozil. Firmino > Sterling Walcott > Hazard
      ..Aguero > Costa

For me. My differential is Ozil. And maybe Sterling to some extent. Not really worried atm of budget GK losing their place because I have foster and West Brom's fixtures are good for the next 5. And Mannone is still pretty cheap at 4.3.

I'm gonna risk it this year. Not gonna go Aguero. Betting on the funds from him can offset his returns. I know I'm gonna be on edge every gameweek. But hey. That's part of the reasons why we play this haha.

I own 11 of the template and also have 2 Chelsea (Hazard & Alonso). Of the other 4 HoF template, I am not looking to get any of them in. The goal is to look forward rather than back, which means considering the likes of Kane in for Lukaku if funds will stretch that far.

Re budget keepers, I am not worried that Heaton will be dropped any time soon; if Pickford does get replaced by Mannone then I will probably just play Heaton for as long as it makes sense.

I remember quite a few people were surprised at the time that he had chosen Liverpool as he was a great prospect. Fair enough, he was inconsistent at Inter but he was still young.

My point was generally that the best player in the league this season (debatably) was so cheap in a market where players go for £100m plus.

For sure, more viable options available = more skill required
But it's looking like my only reasonable way of getting in Coutinho and I'm certainly worried about his ownership

When Sanchez runs out on Tuesday we'll have to conduct some DNA testing just to be certain it's him, our transfers rely on it.

    • Atimis
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 5 months ago

      Rate my plan 😀

      Currently:
      Pickford/Grant
      Walker/Holebas/Cameron/Amat/McAuley
      Cout/Wally/Firm/Hazard/Allen
      Kaku/Austin/Kun

      In 4GW time:
      Walker > Alonso, Grant > Heaton/Valdes, Kaku > Costa, Cameron > some cheap def, Allen > ?

      Any thoughts ? Cheers !

Things are going to change a lot before then I'd wager, not least prices.

Moves look solid but I'd keep Walker.

I've got the same first 4 defenders + Lovren and most likely sticking this week. After Walker's appearance for Eng I'm definitely going to hold for now. Hopefully Cameron recovers and slots back in at CM...

I like it atimis, this is the kind of forward planning you need to do to ensure your team stays in good shape. I am also going to drop Lukaku after he plays Watford in 4 weeks to handover the baton to Kane or Costa who have nice fixtures. For your cheap defender maybe look at Swansea because their coming fixtures are very nice. Maybe van der horn who is a big lad and scored last week is a good shout for 4.3m. Also Cedric for Southampton is very attacking if you can afford 4.9m. Maybe snodgrass is a good pick if you want to replace Allen, on all the set pieces for hull

Which of these front 7s would you prefer in a 3-5-2 ??

      A) SANCHEZ, Hazard, Mane, Allen, LALLANA
      ------------------KUN, Lukaku

      B) KDB, Hazard, Mane, Allen, FIRMINO
      -----------------KANE, Lukaku

      sanchez,firmi,Cout,capoue,redmond.
      aguero,lukaku,rondon

      Playing AOA,
      A. Bellerin > Alonso (no hit) (hope Sanchez and Rondon both get fit)
      B. Bellerin,Sanchez > Alonso, Hazard (-4) (hope Rondon gets fit)
      C. Bellerin,Sanchez,Rondon > Alonso, Hazard, Austin (-8)
      D. Something else
      Also ,
      1. DO the transfers now
      2. Do the transfers later in the week.

This is supposed to be a fact piece so aurmising who these "top" players are likely to bring in is really wrong imo.

You could end up misleading a whole host of players to bring in the likes of Heaton who going by the number of saves he has had to make is not likely to be getting many cs. If it wasn't for his two very unlikely cs against utd and Liverpool he'd be way down the list near foster and with the fixtures coming up I'd back wba and foster to be getting a lot more cs than the likes of Heaton.

In short these guys at the top are there not because they follow the herd all the time they look past the numbers the likes of Heaton had to the reason why and realise maybe it is not worth wasting a transfer on him
