Scout Notes – Lingard and Pogba Topple Toffees

Paul Pogba revives his Fantasy stock, though Jesse Lingard’s rapid ascent as a cut-price midfield option dominates proceedings as Manchester United ease through the gears to see off Everton.

Lingard’s sublime second strike for the visitors at Goodison means he now has seven goals and two assists from the last nine Gameweeks.

The reaction from Fantasy Premier League managers has been instant. Lingard is the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 23, with 42,000+ making the move. That has seen his price rise to 6.2 overnight, with a further rise looking likely prior to the next deadline.

Lingard had already proved a popular figure even before his effort on Merseyside.

He was signed by 94,000+ ahead of Saturday’s deadline and was second only to Roberto Firmino for transfers in ahead of Gameweek 21, claiming over 303,000 new owners.

It’s difficult to question the move for Lingard at present. Although shifted from a No 10 position to a role on the left at Goodison Park, he still managed to float into central areas and was only denied a second goal by a superb Jordan Pickford save.

Indeed, since cementing a run of starts from Gameweek 14 onwards, his total of 13 shots on target is matched only by Mohamed Salah among FPL midfielders. He easily tops the United ranks for shots over that period and is also second only to Juan Mata for chances created.

That combined threat and creativity, coupled with a modest price tag, creates a very strong case for inclusion in our midfields at this time, even with competition so fierce.

And yet Pogba also used Monday’s match to highlight that he cannot be totally overlooked.

Restricted to just one penalty area touch in his three appearances since returning from suspension in Gameweek 19, Pogba was given more freedom to join the attack against Everton.

The inclusion of Ander Herrera in the starting line-up allowed Pogba to influence matters in attack and he had eight touches in the box, including two of his four shots on goal.

Pogba ended the match with two assists and a maximum bonus return to deliver a first double-figure score since Gameweek 12. However, he is still without a goal in seven starts.

The Frenchman was sold by 73,000+ ahead of Monday’s match, losing 69,000+ in net ownership over the last two Gameweeks.

The emergence of Lingard will do little to reverse that trend, though with an Old Trafford meeting with Stoke City up next, there is surely an incentive for his remaining 633,000+ manages to sit tight.

Trips to Burnley and Spurs then follow – both altogether more testing fixtures for United’s attack.

United Defence Back on Track

A run of just one clean sheet in seven was halted by the goalless draw with Southampton in Gameweek 21. With another clean sheet achieved at Everton, confidence in Jose Mourinho’s backline is being restored.

David De Gea continues to stretch out in front in the overall goalkeeper standings on 114 points, edging ahead of Burnley’s Nick Pope for points per match (5.2 vs 4.9).

Phil Jones – at 5.6 to De Gea’s 5.9 – is the alternative cover in the United defence.

Surprisingly, the centre-back started again for a sixth successive Gameweek, destroying the theory that he may struggle to chain appearances together over this festive period.

That should reassure us on his prospects from this point on, with a clean sheet against the Potters in Gameweek 24 on the cards.

Jones is currently the most signed defender ahead of Gameweek 24.

However, Mourinho’s new outlook on Luke Shaw also has to be considered. The left-back has now started and completed 90 minutes in each of the last three Gameweeks.

Priced at just 4.9, if Shaw can show that he has cemented a starting role, there is no question that he is another asset to consider.

Concerns Mount for Calvert-Lewin

While United’s assets enjoyed a revival in Monday’s meeting, confidence in Everton as a source of Fantasy talent took a blow.

Wayne Rooney‘s recall to the starting XI failed to produce returns for a player now part of 922,000+ FPL squads. Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was handed a rest with Oumar Niasse leading the Toffees attack.

Calvert-Lewin’s potential as a cut-price third or even second striker will come under scrutiny from this point. He has produced just a single goal in six Gameweeks and, with Sam Allardyce confirming a bid for Cenk Tosun, it’s clear that his role and minutes could soon be reduced.

Everton failed to register a shot on target against United, with Allardyce making it clear that the club is moving to address matters in attack.

“We know where our problems are, the club knew before I got here that was the problem. We’re trying to cure that in this window by getting a frontline that can threaten and score goals.”

In defence, Jonjoe Kenny was also handed a rest after struggling in the 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth in Gameweek 21. It remains to be seen if he is handed a recall over Mason Holgate at right-back for Friday’s FA Cup tie with Liverpool, with a visit to Spurs to follow in Gameweek 23.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It's a marginal yes, in terms of his price. Similar case to Pogba and Phil Jones. They are never as essential as Salah and Kane because you won't captain any MU players now, but their price would be essential for you to form a balance team.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Gameweek 23 early planning

With many of our teams focused on the current double Gameweek it can be easy to forget the coming Gameweek.

Some have played Free Hit chips this week, while others are loaded up on Spurs and West Ham assets at the expense of other players that also have good fixtures.

Here are a few issues that Fantasy managers may consider ahead of the next deadline. Feel free to comment on these and suggest some more as we prepare for a short FA Cup break in FPL proceedings.

    Manchester United assets

With Stoke dropping by Old Trafford, Manchester United arguably have Gamweek 23’s best fixture. Lingard is once again proving his value with a goal yesterday and could be an intriguing differential captain option given the Potter’s porous backline.

Paul Pogba also showed the form in yesterday’s game that his owners had expected. But with Lukaku expected back will the Frenchman be given the same license to roam in an attacking role? His positioning on Monday 15 January will be keenly watched by those looking to offload one of their Spurs assets.

    Liverpool v Man City

This is hard to call. Liverpool are far better defensively at home, while City could be without key players such as KDB. In addition, Mohammed Salah may not have recovered in time, but if fit he has the ability to break down the City backline. This will be a key match for those who have dumped Salah for the double Gameweek as well as those who are looking to invest in Sergio Aguero – who looks to be rotation free in the absence of Gabriel Jesus.

    Cheap defenders.

This looks a great week for those with cheap defenders, which means vital funds can be freed up to invest in premium attacking options. Huddersfield, Brighton, Newcastle, Burnley and Crystal Palace all have favourable ties.

    Time to ditch Everton’s enablers

But not all cheap assets have a good fixture. Everton face Spurs but also long term January looks to be the end of the road for the likes of Calvert Lewin and JonJoe Kenny. Their benching yesterday looks set to be repeated once injured players return and Big Sam dips his toes into the January transfer waters.

What else catches your eye about Gameweek 23 and what are your early plans?

Pogba is more nailed, 100% starter. But I'd say Lingard is minimal risk, say 90% a starter. How can he leave out a player in such goalscoring form and playing with such confidence? There also isn't much threat to his attacking midfield place with Ibra out and Miki horribly out of form.

Five players for Liverpool v City and no United assets at home to Stoke... could be a bad GW.

Could get Pogba or Lingard in for a Liverpool or City midfielder, but City and Liverpool have great fixtures the following GW.

Patience is key, if someone decent comes in then any of the Double assets (6 for me) are disposable.

Spurs are the big draw, annoyingly can see yet another Harry blank against Everton next week, despite Everton looking a bit dodgy.

      Great write up, Jonty.

I also think it's worth mentioning that by the time GW23 comes along, we'll be halway through the transfer window and we may be clearer on whether to hold the likes of Coutinho or invest in Sanchez at Man City. Players like Ing may also have moved by then.

Sure they play Spurs away in 23 but then it’s West Brom, Leicester and Palace at home in the next 4 (with Arsenal away sandwiched in there where Pickford could get two save points easily).

I wouldnt call those bad fixtures. Im holding on Pickford. Also if Everton manage to frustrate Spurs like some other weaker sides did, it would make a Harry Kane blank easier to accept

I never seriously planned to hold on to Son for long, so he's off out for Pogba or Lingard I think. DCL will probably head out for Quaner, too, for future £££

Looks like a "muddle through" gameweek with a lot of the key assets with adverse matchups.

My early plan is to do nothing and save a FT, assuming no injuries or suspensions. This will give me a couple of free's for GW24 to bring back Salah in for Son, and maybe Aguero in for Kane to take advantage of the fixture swing at this time.

I own Lingard, Stoke are the best team to face if you're a top 6 side at home - so far this season Chelsea have beaten them 5-0, Spurs 5-1, City 7-2. Pogba and Lukaku also good options if he's recovered in time, although the best value combo is probably Jones and Lingard.

I'm looking forward to watching Liverpool v City, but there's enough uncertainty about personell for me to be quite satisfied only owning Firmino and Sterling from these sides. Hopefully if Salah is back he won't hurt me too much, at least he shouldn't be highly captained so his EO shouldn't be too high.

      Differentials

A lot of people seem to have jumped off Hazard and Chelsea in general, so if they take advantage of the good upcoming fixtures they could be nice differentials for me as I've still got 3 of them. But other teams are worthy of investment for those looking to wildcard - Arsenal and Leicester have nice little runs coming - Mahrez, Vardy, Albrighton and Maguire look worthy of investment, and an Arsenal defender or Ramsey if he's recovered could be value. Hammers players also worth holding for the time being too.

I don't see DCL as too much of an issue yet, he can sit on the bench for me at his price, plus he's still coming on in everton games at the moment. May wait for the transfer window to shut before sorting out his replacement.

Kicking out Son seems to be a popular theme now. At home v Everton it's an eyebrow raiser. His home record is outstanding.

Partly against the wisdom of the top 10k, I have kept Hazard, Salah and Coutinho. My plans hereafter will be focused on the form of the former, the transfer hopes of the latter and the injury situation of Salah. I think every team is in its own shape and has its own problems now. This is the stage of the game where we seem to know a lot and who differntiates better will prevail.

Edwards, Holgate, Kabasele, ogbonna and Long.

Can't decide between selling Arnie or lingard to a cheap midfielder to fund the above changes? Arnie has Huddersfield,

Surely WC 36 and BB 37? Unlikely to be able to field 11 DGW players in 37 if you've stocked up with DGW 34, unless they are the same teams with DGWs. Especially because FH effectively cancels one of your free transfers.

Don't like GW37 BB, too many teams have nothing to play for, so rotation is rife.

7+ players with a DGW in both GW34 and GW37, would allow up to 15DGW's in GW34 and up to 11 in DGW's in GW37. I don't think 11 DGW'ers in GW37 is essential however, some single GW players with good fixtures and something to play for are likely to be better options.

United could also be set to sign Napoli full-back Faouzi Ghoulam, according to reports in Portugal. The Red Devils are said to be prepared to trigger the 26-year-old Algerian’s £53m release clause, with Napoli already preparing for his exit and close to landing Benfica’s Alejandro Grimaldo. (Record)

MANCHESTER UNITED have been boosted in their pursuit of £54million Napoli left-back Faouzi Ghoulam, according to reports.

The Serie A club are close to agreeing a £27m fee for Benfica defender Alejandro Grimaldo.

If I was Poch, I’d start Kane on the bench, and start Llorente vs his parent club.

If things aren’t working out, bring on the hatty maestro to secure the win. If they are then Kane gets a decent recovery period and fresh for game in less than 48hrs.

Mahrez/Aguero(monitor first), Arnie and Richarlison are all viable and better imo. Pickford fix will change after next gw could be an excellent option.

How much of a dud is Morata?

I held onto him for this run of good fixtures but he's starting to test my patience.

In other words: Son + Morata -> Lingard + Kun (-4)

Not a dud at all. Excellent movement, the right supply he will score many goals

That supply (Pedro and Willian) seems to be taking all the goals right now.

Mr. Hazard is performing but not producing.

Could say the same about Hazard to some extent. Both eclipsed by Pedro and Willian!

That looks good to me - I think Kun is looking a nailed-on starter in the medium term for City now, unless they sign a Bony-character backup striker midseason to take the load off him

    Slightly regretting it now....

      A) Eriksen. Steady, reliable, slightly boring

      B) Alli + Son. Rash, unpredictable and possible no-show

      B is SO you Jaf.

Jafooli. The game hasn't happened yet. Very little to regret.

I was surprised though - stats came out from FFix today and 20% of live teams on Son, 19% Eriksen and 12% Alli for live teams (believe it's teams changed in last 5 weeks cutoff).

So you have the top and bottom owned Spurs players - should be a fun ride 🙂

Hooked me like a line and sinker 😀 I had a bit of a freakout and bought DDG a few weeks ago, so my budget could only stretch to him alongside Kane Arnie and Oggie.

First time I've ever owned Sonny! Suspect he'll be out by next week, though, for Pog/Lingard lol

Initial thoughts on the best move here?

    Adrian
    Ottamendi, Christiansen, Duffy,
    Arnie, Salah, Sterling, Richarlison, Son
    Morata, Kane

    Fabianski; Ogbonna, Kenny, DCL

    A) Kenny -> Jones
    B) Morata -> Aguero
    C) Son -> Coutinho
    D) Arnie / Richarlison -> Lingard

H2H rival has DDG / Jones, so Im thinking A

Why are so many people selling Coutinho? I would be really surprised if he left considering Pool havent been heavily linked with replacements. He has an amazing ppg and is much more consistent than Firmino. Salah also isnt enough Pool cover as we have seen. At least wait till we get more news about him

Mane replaces him, and Lallana is back. The 75m on Van Dijk seems an early replacement (using the funds that will be coming)

Liverpool were trying to get VVD before Coutinho speculation and Mane is nowhere near his top form. Liverpool cant break teams down without Coutinhos creativity

It's because of reactions to the Burnley game - this happens every week if a player is rested. Don't worry about it - your analysis is correct.

If the transfer circus develops I'd change your mind on owning, but without more info as you say I'd hold off acting on anything 🙂
