After recording 11 clean sheets across the first 22 Gameweeks, including three shut-outs in their last four fixtures, the Manchester City defence is once again drawing the attention of Fantasy managers.

Could you do one to include Chelsea and Spurs, with a few others like WHU,STK,WBA?

  4. Otamendi v Stones

Nice piece, and it’s worth considering that whilst Stones is yet to score in the league this season, he has 3 goals in the Champions League. Otamendi has scored 5 goals in 26 games in all competitions this season, or 0.19 goals per game. In the 16 matches where Stones has started and played 60+ minutes this season, his 3 goals almost exactly match Otamendi's rate at 0.19 per game.

It's also worth noting that in pre-season, where Stones and Otamendi started three games together, playing 60+ minutes in each, Stones grabbed two goals to Otamendi's one, which was itself assisted by Stones.

Another advantage to owning Stones is his excellent discipline. He hasn't picked up a single booking this season, whereas Otamendi served a one-game suspension after reaching five yellows by GW11. In total, Otamendi has 33 yellow cards in 118 appearances for City, roughly one every 3.6 games, whereas Stones has only been shown a single yellow card in 60 matches at the club, which came on his third appearance for the club, back in August 2016.

If Stones is anywhere near nailed, Stones +1.0 is clearly better - I don't think it's really up for debate tbh

I wonder how their bonus potential compares? I thought Stones has always been a little averse when it comes to picking up the baps. I’m probably wrong, it’s just something ve got in my head about him.

      1. Ludo
        • 10 Years

There's a useful comparison in the article, and I don't think there's much in it. Stones gets 6 BPS for 90% pass completion (he's rarely below 95%) and 30 passes by half-time every game, whereas I think Otamendi has missed out on it a few times, so that's one thing in Stones' favour, though Otamendi's definitely improved his distribution under Pep this season.

Stones also doesn't lose nearly as many BPS for fouls and yellow cards as Otamendi, as above, though Otamendi has also improved in that respect lately - just one booking in 10 since he returned from suspension.

I think Otamendi probably has the slight edge with his CBI, though, which isn't too surprising, given that he's more of a proper old-school centre back than Stones, in terms of doing the less elegant types of defensive work.

Ok nice one. It does look a lot closer than I thought then. I definitely prefer Otamendi myself but the extra 1.0 can go an awful long way. It all depends on each individuals team I suppose.

The final advantage is that Otamendi has a lot of football in his legs from this season, whereas Stones is fresher, and younger. If either of them are rotated with Kompany it will be Otamendi I feel.

Best nailed on budget defender other than Kenny? AND, would anybody consider swapping Ota for Alonso? Not sure whether it’s bias making me want to make the change, or the fact I think come the end of the season Alonso will finish on more points.

The important thing here is to look at data which best mimics what we want to project into, and that's not pre-season and it's not the champions league. It's also not the most recent data as Otamendi had a different partner. The data from the first 12 games in which they both features alongside each other in central defence is more useful imo. It tells us this:

Otamendi destroys Stones in almost all respects

      Goal attempts: double
      On target: double
      Touches in opponents half: double
      In final third: triple
      BPS: thrashes

If we work on the assumption that Stones and Otamendi were pick up where they left off then these stats suggests if you unlock the free cash by trading down you're likely just trading up to about...

      Points per game:

      Stones: 5.2
      Ota: 5.8

Ota's discipline has improved in the last 10 games and had he been as disciplined in the first half of the season we'd be looking at about one point per game difference.

So my best guess is you're trading about .75 points per game for your cash

I owned Stones last season, and again earlier in this season due to his goals in pre season and CL. It was frustrating when Otamendi was scoring in the league and Stones wasn't, but more frustrating and not linked to stats, is when he gets injured. For that reason Otamendi is worth the extra money.

Nice piece, but surprised there was no mention of Kompany. Have to think he'll get some matches if and when he's fit. Who's he more likely to come in for? Or will it be a switch to 352?

I'm not sure how much of a factor Kompany will be until the end season. If City keep progressing to the CL end stages and they have the title won, then yes, it will be a concern.

In the short-term, there's no doubt that Otamendi is due a rest. Not sure how soon that will come though.

Yeh I genuinely think Kompany has gone from no.1 to no.3 in Pep's mind throughout the season. However, like you said, in the latter stages with City still in all the cups, Kompany could get matches into the less-important prem matches.
City could have it wrapped up with over 5 matches left

most of them are pretty nailed.. don't think any new signing would replace them immediately (except a Man Utd LB/LWB signing) and they won't be cheap on FPL too..

No, but for example a 6.0 LWB/LB would be great value regardless of other options (especially considered Joe's is 5.7 now and still as injury prone as ever).

Third jinx in a row when I've taken a hit for a premium defensive asset!
Jones - got injured v hud
          DDG - conceded v wba
          Ota = watford

          BAH

This week I'm bringing in Lingard I think, so avoid like the plague.

Always a chance at set pieces for Ota, even at Anfield. If you saw Burnley's goal this week...

Which double up do you prefer?

    A) Otamendi + Stones
    B) Alonso + Chrisensen
    C) All 4 defenders

I have Ota and Christensen right now.

I will bring in Alonso but Christensen is good value if he plays.

Think maybe Dunk, Duffy or Lascelles.
Burnley worth a look from mid Feb after they finish their trio of tough home games.

Lets see how Spurs perform today and in what lineup first. Back in the 3421 Eriksen could be a great shout, and Vardy seems to like scoring in tougher fixtures.

Really want Alonso but only way to get him would be to lose Hazard which I’m not keen on..

Messed about a bit came up with this for a -12

    Christensen - Alonso
    Otamendi - Stones
    Janmaat - Masuaku
    DCL - Quaner

Sounds silly but sets me up nice long term..

    Any thoughts appreciated

Only take a hit if you'll actually make points from each individual move. The last two are just admin, throwing away points for no reason. Not worth it.

-12 is never a good move... İ want Alonso too, but in all fairness I dont think he is.essential.. Christensen will.cover the cs and the extra 1.6 could be spend as wisely on upgrading other options.. For now I will settle for for Christensen though
