Scout Notes – Kane Falters in Dismal Double

Double Gameweek 22 finally brings to a close a frenetic period of Fantasy action, but it’s an unhappy end for those who go big on Spurs striker Harry Kane.

Picking through the bones of Spurs’ 1-1 draw with West Ham last night makes for depressing reading for most, if not quite all, FPL managers.

Chief draw of the double Gameweek was Kane, who went into it with back-to-back hat-tricks and came out the other side with three measly points from 112 anti-climactic minutes.

Illness hit the striker over Christmas, but that didn’t dissuade close to 428,000 managers making him the second most popular buy of Gameweek 22.

More than 24% then captained him and 121,000+ played their Triple Captain chip – leading figures for both – only for Kane’s inconsistent Wembley form to bite one and all.

His eight goals in 11 home appearances looks strong, but he’s actually failed to find the net in seven of those matches.

When he scores at Wembley, he generally scores big. But not last night – despite having seven shots, five of which came in the area, against the Hammers.

All is not lost for his 43.5% ownership as Spurs entertain Everton and then travel to Southampton next.

Those match-ups have persuaded more than 100,000 managers to bring him in already, making him the second most purchased player ahead of Gameweek 23 even though the FA Cup third round has to be endured before that.

A spiteful three-match run (MUN liv ARS) then follows at the end of January, which will most likely require a re-evaluation of the various Spurs assets brought in to capitalise on Gameweek 22’s double fixtures.

Kane might well survive that purge, but the chips blown and transfer hits taken to bring him in this week have hurt many now, and could have knock-on effects.

Son shines bright on the night

Across the two teams with double fixtures, no player scored more points than Spurs midfielder Son Heung-min.

His equalising goal against West Ham earned him two bonus for nine points on the night and 12 for the Gameweek.

Andy Carroll, with a brace in Tuesday’s 2-1 win over West Brom, was the only other double Gameweek player to score so many points, but his 0.6% ownership meant the effect of all that was negligible.

Not so Son, who was Gameweek 22’s most bought player, with 498,000 transfers-in.

That took him to 12.6% ownership, and his ever-growing army of managers have certainly reaped the benefits of some excellent home form.

Son has now scored in six of his last seven matches at Wembley and is also enjoying a consistent run in the team, starting in nine of the last ten fixtures.

While the availability of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama gives Mauricio Pochettino the option of shifting to a 3-4-2-1, potentially putting Son’s start at risk, the idea of Spurs lining up without the in-form South Korean seems remote.

Son (8.1) is up to 99 points for the season, which puts him just outside the top ten scoring midfielders and only three points shy of team-mate Dele Alli, who is 0.9 more expensive.

The England international blanked last night, as did Christian Eriksen, but both are in strong enough form – the Dane has produced returns in six of his last eight matches, Alli has two goals and four assists in four – for managers to hold onto them for the next two attractive fixtures at least.

At the back, Spurs have kept back-to-back clean sheets just twice all season, and West Ham’s one shot on target put paid to their chances of that happening again on Thursday.

Those upcoming Everton and Southampton fixtures look like an excellent opportunity to make it third time lucky, but Spurs’ defenders remain relatively expensive for the returns they’re delivering.

The cheapest among them, Kieran Trippier (5.3), is also the most vulnerable to rotation, and so it proved last night as the ex-Burnley man was rewarded for his nine-point showing in Tuesday’s win at Swansea City with a place on the bench against the Hammers as Serge Aurier once again took his place.

Their most owned defender, Ben Davies (13.4%), started consecutive matches for the first time since Gameweek 16, thanks to an injury to Danny Rose.

Fantasy managers will be hoping that situation continues for the next two Gameweeks, if not much further forward than that.

Injury terminates Arnie’s hopes

Spurs players dominated the transfer market for Gameweek 22, with Marko Arnautovic the only West Ham fly in that particular ointment.

The midfielder was third for transfers-in (368,000+) on the back of a consistent spell of form under David Moyes during which he’d scored five times in as many matches.

Arnautovic kept things ticking over with an assist in the win over West Brom, only for a hamstring niggle to rule him out of last night’s match and scupper the double Gameweek plans of 8.8% of FPL managers.

But unless the issue is a serious one, his form and West Ham’s fixtures (hud BOU CRY bha WAT), make the Austrian one to keep for now.

Pre-match, his manager had this to say:

“Marko has got an injury as well. He’s been really important to us, but he’s not fit to play tonight.”

The fact that Carroll was unable to cope with the quick turnaround in matches suggests that the target man’s minutes could be managed by Moyes, with Arnautovic again used as the central striker over at least some of those favourable fixtures. Carroll has played four successive matches just once this season – between Gameweeks 4-7.

Another midfielder who enjoyed a surge in ownership this week was Manuel Lanzini.

Some 68,000+ managers bought into him, more than doubling his ownership, and he produced an assist for Pedro Obiang’s spectacular opener last night.

The Argentine now has five assists from his last six starts and is another well-placed to capitalise on the Hammers’ forthcoming fixtures.

At the back, Angelo Ogbonna and Arthur Masuaku both enjoyed decent Gameweek 22 investment, but produced only four and three points respectively.

It was left to goalkeeper Adrian to bring in slightly better returns, his seven saves at Spurs helping him to six points from the two matches.

He now has three clean sheets and seven save points from his eight appearances since replacing Joe Hart.

At 4.3, he remains a very viable rotation partner for Burnley’s Nick Pope, particularly when the Clarets host both Manchester clubs across Gameweeks 24 and 26.

    Festive Rough with the Smooth

With the festive four game mini-season now over I thought it’d be good to do a special rough with the smooth this time around and find out how you did over this period (Gameweeks 19-22).

Feel free to include your key highs and lows from this period – which I suspect for many will involve the recent dismal Double Gameweek and a certain Mr Kane.

Here’s how the Scoutcasters did over Gameweeks 19-22 with hits taken into account.

    Az – 314. Up to 728
    Granvile -311. Up to 48,223
    Jonty – 292. Up to 5,070
    Andy - 275. Up to 51,639
    Mark – 270. Up to 26,980

Sold Kane before City game. Looked like the right decision when he blanked and Rooney hauled on the MNF. Two terrible GWs later and my season was pretty much derailed thanks to Kane. Got him back for this week and the obvious blank followed. People call Lukaku a troll but quite honestly Kane is a lot worse.

Have only had two captain returns since GW10 with the last one coming in GW16. So 6 captain blanks in a row now!

Two greens in a row now thanks to my late WC. Team is in good shape so still hopeful that I can make it to top 10k from my current 610k.

Triple spurs attack along with Salah Courtinho and a total of 12 points from 5 defenders and GK was abismal, Captain Son saves the day. Gone from 20k too 60k in 3 weeks but considering how bad my team has done I’m happy overall.

      312 points - Up to 14,179 from 63k

Interesting choice - Free hit chip in GW22
Reason being- (Already had Kane and Ogbonna) Did a free transfer from Lingard to Son then a hit to bring in Alli for Coutinho. I then wanted MORE dgw players, Mahrez and my team wasn't looking the strongest.. Free hit netted me 80 points against my original team which would have got me around 43. 37 extra points for free hit feels ok but i'm still unsure if it will hurt me in the BGW. I will have to navigate it carefully.

A measly 262 points after two hits.
Smooth: Oversleeping on New Years day, with 2 free transfers to bring in Kane. Instead, no transfers, with Salah still captain from week 21. Cue vice captaincy going to Sterling's 9 points, and Murray's 8 points and Hazard's 10 points still in team both of whom would have gone for the Kane swap.
Rough: More or less everything else

        572k to 369k. 262 points including hits.

GW 19 and 20 were great, Kane captain and the triple Liverpool attack of Salah, Coutinho and Firminho.

21 and 22 were awful. I went all in on the double gameweek. Triple captain Kane. Took out Pogba and Hazard for double gameweekers. Only one of my three West Ham players ended up playing twice.

I've not been enjoying it this season, I've struggled to catch a break and have been actually looking forward to international and cup weeks to watch football without worrying about who got the assist! Although I am sure I could salvage a respectable position, I have previously finished 5k and 10k so this isn't much of a motivation. Also I am shortly starting work on an 18,000 word Masters dissertation so I can't really justify the distraction unless I was in with a good chance of a personal best finish.

Good luck for the rest of the season!

72 (-4) points, but could have been so much better with all players blanking last night and a serious opportunity to make inroads in my mini leagues. Up to a frankly rubbish 650k rank but shoots of recovery after a terrible first 10 game weeks.

KDB first sub was nice and brought in and (c) Alli. Also changed my mind about Kane at the last minute with the illness news and didn't take the planned big hit to bring him in. It worked out well.

Last night's 1-1 draw was worst possible result and a shame that I rage transferred hazard out before injuries to KDB and Salah occurred or i'd have kept him and subbed Salah for Alli.

      335 (-4) over the last 4 gameweeks. I went from 283k to 22k.

My "rough" moment was when I lost 7 points from Zeegelaar and Richarlison in the last 5 minutes against Swansea, but it was more of a sacrifice as I've been following Swansea for over a decade. Kane (C) for the DGW was a bit disappointing, but I felt he had to be captained in case his illness was nothing.

The smoothest part that's been different from earlier in the season is the immediate success from transfers and captains. Sterling, Kane and Salah have given 45 captaincy points the last 4 GWs. I've transferred in Jones, Sterling, Lingard, Arnautovic and Son, and immediately gotten 44 points in the first GW of having these players. The players I brought out only scored 5 points, and RLC, Kolasinac and Coutinho have even gotten injured.

I enjoyed how patience has worked out. Kane and Alonso have given some massive hauls lately, and they are 2 out of 3 players I've had throughout the whole season. I kept Gross for the Watford game despite looking to ship him out, and he bid me farewell with a nice 11 pointer.

Lastly I've been massively benefiting from my luck with avoiding Chelsea players. I could never afford to bring in Hazard, so I decided to get in Coutinho for the festive period. Morata's injury and 4 yellow cards made me bring in Firmino and completely ignore my plan to potentially sell Kane. I could've possibly had 60-70 points less this period if Morata wasn't certain to miss out against Huddersfield.

GW19 I was 643k now I'm 250k. The best transfer I made in this period was Silva > Sterling who has got me 34 points. Worst thing I did was triple captain Kane. Made some poor transfers too.

      GW19 - Tarkowski > Ogbonna
      GW21 - Lowton > Robertson
      GW21 - Kane > Morata

Took an 8 point hit in GW22, played triple captain chip and did:

      Hazard (10 points) > Son (12)
      Morata (2) > Kane (9 inc TC)
      Firmino (1) > Aguero (6)

Taking the hit into consideration, I've only gained 6 points.

First two GWs were great. Arnautovic particularly was a nice differential back then, the last two were average, but still very happy.
The only rough was not owning Alonso, (have Christensen instead).Would have been in a great position if I had him.

288 points increased my rank from 671,000 to 244,000. A hit or two too many, but I feel I learnt a bit from it. GW 20 my first ever 100 point plus single gameweek. Double was a disappointment but my single gameweek players got me through - Murray, Lingard, Maguire, Alonso, Sterling.

Looking to push on and make a late run for the top 10,000 as with last season.

1.24 million to just inside 500k over that period...

Back to back tons in GW19,20 but summing up the season back down a snake in 21 and 22.

      Last week I did a -12:

Morata, Cout, Firm, Salah to Kane, Alli, Arnie, Kun = 3 to 24 = +9 point profit.Hits can work if you see long term issues...

So I have to get Salah back (probably for Alli) and sorry to give up the Fab 3 in general, but there is too much to factor in with Couts right now. Think the team now is well equipped bar fitting in Alonso somewhere to get to my target 100k mark. A fifth top 7k finish is now gone sadly...

but captaining Kane cannot be "rough"; nothing else was more reasonable and forced...
whereas not triple captaining him can be "smooth"... he is that of a maniac...

      Rough; Kane(TC)

Smooth; Alonso, what a move that was getting him in for Xmas. Vertonghen, Adrian outscored my other keeper Foster, Ogbonna outscored Mee during the Double both brought in on wildcard. Mostly got XI out thanks to ensuring playing subs.

Gone from 50k going into Xmas to 14k coming out the other side. Wasted my TC chip, but in the scheme of things does it or will it matter..

324 (-12) Probably my best result in 4 festive Gameweeks. OR from 19,119 to 2406.

Smooth - 3 captain picks with 17,14,13 points, 11 clean sheets in 4 Gameweeks, brought in Alonso for Azpi, Firmino in just before his 3 consecutive double figures. Only Salah this Gameweek was my only player not to play in the festive period and I managed that with Niasse still in my team.

      No roughs for me really.

All in all, I'm extremely satisfied with my team in the last few Gameweeks.

      277 points went from 105k to 55k
Smooth taking out dann before he gets injured keeping faith in Kane and captaining him for both hattricks taking a 12 point hit and ended up 11 points better including the hit and bringing in alli and son
Rough gameweek 21 only 9 starters and gameweek 22 getting rid of de Bruyne and missing out on points and getting rid of salah and hasn't dropped in price. By far the worst part is using my triple captain chip on Kane this week obviously I knew the risks of him not starting but the potential was huge which is why I end up taking the risk. All in all happy im in top 100k as that was the goal I set way back in gameweek 12 to be inside top 100k by gameweek 22

264 (-8) over the four weeks, pursuing Kanexit and getting him back and captained for GW22. Thankfully the rest of the team did ok and I'm slightly up from 142k to 136k OR.

My big disappointment has been me "helping" my seven year old son (whom I desperately want to do well) in his first FPL season. I advised him to use his first wildcard in GW19 to sell his all-time favourite player Kane and get him back in GW22 and TC him. He did all this and dropped from 334k to 667k, with 212 points in these four weeks. I think in future I'd better just let him get on with it himself - he was 18k OR after GW9!

Rough mostly, sold Kane for the City game and missed his hat tricks, bought back for the Double.

Kane now has averaged me 4.2 points per game (including captains) compared to 9.6 (without captains) when I don’t own him.

On the other side a failed Double was paid back, my 8 point hit took out Caroll (2) Hazard (10) Coutinho (0) and Morata (2) =14 for Kane (6) Arnie (5) Son (12) Lanzini (6) meaning a massive plus 7

Net 248 with a rankings boost of 70k and slightly ahead of d1sable now. Finally bit into the Salah bug which was the highlight and captained him in 20 & 21 but it came at the expense of not owning Kane. Consolidated position in most MLs which is the real smooth of this period as many people fell behind. Closest rival had a defensive double on United while I had it on Chelsea which was sweet.

Roughs: Injuries to key players like Morata in GW 19 and Kane, Vardy, Salah, Elliot, RLC, Cresswell this week alongwith DCL going out of favour is the big sour point. Could have been a much better festive period had this had not happened.

      Rough :
      1. Took punt on Sane (C) over obvious Sterling (C)
      2. Forgot the deadline, so Pickford 10 pointer remain on the bench, missed Daniels' transfer also.
      3. Not having ManU/ManC defence also doesn't help.
      4. DGW Captain Kane
      5. Arnie missed a game, Lanzini/Masuaku didn't deliver

      Smooth :
      1. Hazard (C), Salah (VC) served me well.
      2. Holding on Kane with Captaining for 2nd hattie was wonderful.
      3. Sterling/Firmino deliverred
      4. Wanted to ditch Haz, but did Salah instead for DGW, 10 nice differential points.
      5. Son points also come as handy, also Vert cleanie.

Net 227 over the 4 GWs, 4 red arrows as I fell from 226k to 392k and can't even blame it on selling Kane, just didn't captain him for his hauls and did for the DGW.

Injuries galore - Austin, Smalling, Christensen, Elliot, Naughton, Silva, KDB, Kane and Salah - resulted in hits and when I take them they never ever pay off. Hadn't taken any hits until GW19 and then 4 in 4 weeks in desperate attempt to avoid the slide.

Particular highlights were rage selling Hazard and buying Silva for a hit only for him to go back to Spain, then selling for another hit only to see him return from Spain. Replacing 'injured' KDB with Eriksen seemed a hit that couldn't lose, it did.

Christensen and Smalling missing left me without Man Utd and Chelsea defensive coverage which hurt massively when they kept clean sheets. Why on earth I thought Kabasele was a decent budget option god only knows.

My first time posting, but I felt compelled to share, given the roughness of my festive period...

I ended GW18 ranked 65,023. I'd owned Kane all season, but only been fortunate enough to catch one of his hauls with an armband - a decent season so far, with a touch of what if.
Following the Scoutcast with Jay Eggersdorff, and with the impending blank looming, I opted to cash in Kane to enable me to replace the absent David Silva with KDB, and upgrade a defender to Jones, for an 8 point hit. No blame lies with any scoutcaster, I knew the risks and took the gamble, but six goals in two games was beyond my wildest worst case estimations!
To compound the misery, his replacement, Lukaku yielded 5 points over 3 games, and I brought Kane back in for the double. Thankfully his flag removed any temptation to triple captain.

I'm now ranked 359,096, and in much need of a big gameweek to reignite my enthusiasm for the latter half of the season.

Pitiful 238 points. Two red arrows and two green arrows, taking me from 1.5k up to 1.3k. Not a good season so far.

Rough: only captained Kane once during that period and it was the DGW; still have Abraham and Kabasele in my squad; Morata's misses; Ogbonna netting 5 points over the period; lost serious ground to ML rivals.

Smooth: Salah (C GWs18-19, VC in for Hazard in GW 20) providing 33% of my points those weeks; didn't take any hits.

Roughs: Brought in Adrian for Pope for the blank gameweek so that I would have a further two FT's for the DGW. Of course Elliot didn't feature and Pope kept a clean sheet, meaning i played goalie-less in GW21.

      304(-48) = 256 ... not much worked out, 2 good weeks and 2 bad weeks - OR up from 1.5M to 1.04M
Didn't have Kane except the DGW

Gw19 ... KDB and Haz both blank .. 2 x 6 pointers on the bench ..save by Sterling (C) but a bad week
Gw20 ... KDB and Haz both poor ... 3MCI, 3LIV and Alonso bring in the points ... just 4 points on the bench

Gw21 ... KDB and Morata (C) both blank .. joined by Firmino, Cout, Sterling all blanking for 12 points in total (for all 5 including Captain doubling) .. saved by 24 points from the back 4, but another CS sitting as 1st sub ... a bad week

Gw22 ... FH played ended up with 71 ... okay but disappointing (McClean goal cost 9 points, choosing Vardy or Mahrez was costly)

The real killer was GW21 when having a full squad, no TOT/WHU deadwood and Stoke visiting Chelsea it should have been a stormer but ended up on 55(-12)

Smooth: Got rid of Kane for a hit and got three green arrows even missing his hatricks

Rough: Got him back in for a hit for the DGW and lots all the gains I made.

313 (-12), so largely smooth. Got 92, 102, 54 and 63 pre-hits in the Gameweeks. Did well with the captains Sterling, Kane and Salah. Not so well with Kane in DGW, but also had Alli and Son. OR went up from 92k > 21k.

      339 (-4) from 19-22 (following 85 in GW 18), 135k to 2k in 5 weeks.

Rough: Captaining KDB in GW 19 over Sterling, Salah, Firminho and Kane.

      294pts. Dropped to 43k gw19 but up to 9k gw22.

Low selling Kane for two hattricks and losing big hitter cs due to injuries and rotation.

High - being vindicated for selling Kane and keeping hazard.
Also not playing fh chip as it would have only excited 77pts for the dbl gw but I got 82 pts with my own team and no hits.

Granville didn't need any hits - his Wildcard was that good.

I wasted one hit - Sane for GW19 was an error but worth a shot - gambled on a revival and it didn't happen. The others I'm very happy with.

Lingard and Alonso came in for two of them and the other was a DGW hit which is forgivable and was in profit (Arnie and Son for Richarlison and Sane).

Without the Alonso and Lingard hits, my GW22 would have really suffered, and I've saved funds on players who are now getting heavy transfer traffic. If I didn't take a hit on them over Xmas, I'd certainly be considering it now, so I reckon I did them at the right time.

It comes down to the value of a 4 point hit. If it shows points profit and also saves 0.2 on players that turn out to be long-term targets, then I reckon hits work. I'd say that's the case for Alonso and Lingard for sure. Son and Arnie? Maybe, we'll find out over the next 2 GWs.

Probably B but all 4 players worthy of consideration currently.

Personally I have least faith in Lingard maintaining this form but I thought the same about Josh King last season and that didn't work out well for me. Ok players on hot streaks are my nemesis.

if Alonso was a 7.2m midfielder you'd buy him in a flash, Lingard i'm not that keen on but seems good value for now, an alternative to Richarlison/Gross

things may change, but there will always be something that happens that means swapping players around, i think if you have players that are right for short/medium term then you get the immediate rewards, and if they turn out to be season keepers that never leave your team then that's a bonus

Saw a few comments on here that Jay was right on scoutcast about this DGW. how exactly is that? he got kane back for a hit so presumably he thought kane would do well but the DGW would be a let down otherwise

Son and alli, probably the two most popular picks on here after kane both got double digit scores. spurs kept 1 cleanie. west ham were a disappointment, although arnie would have done okay had he not missed the 2nd game

Happy enough with green arrows despite the terrible DGW but I think some changes are in order. Where should I focus attention though?

    DDG, Elliot
    Alonso, Vertonghen, Otamendi, Ogbonna, Duffy
    Sterling, Salah, Son, Arnautovic, Carroll

    B) Vertonghen, Arnautovic >> Jones, Lingard (-4)

Go for a bargain basement boy, and invest the diff in a second or third top defender who averages 6+ ppg for 6-7M, also leaving a little money for midfield. 4-5-1 is really not bad right now.

    Hazard / Salah / Alli / Son / Arnie

    Kane / DCL / Quaner

Defo need some of that Man city attack... I'd go Sterling/Jones

      1. Look at his face!

A, but you'll still need City forward.
What about Cout + Morata > Sterling + Aguero?

    A) Arnautovic + Mbemba (non playing defender)
    B) Lingard + Dunk

Bench likely to contain Quaner, Ogbonna, and one of the above...

      I'd play Ogbonna

    Worth having Kane/Mahrez (-4) or Morata/Hazard (-8)?

Really want to get Alonso into my team even for a hit. Who should I get rid of from this dismal bunch?

    A) Gomez
    B) Kenny
    C) Mee
    D) Daniels

I got rid of Kenny, but would happily get rid of any of those. Get rid of the most expensive, never know when might need the extra 0. Whatever.

    DDG
    Alonso, Otamendi, Mee
    Son, Sterling, Lingard, Arnie*, Salah*
    Kane, Firmino

    (Elliot, DCL, Kenny, Mariappa)

    GW23: Kenny -> Jones?
    GW24: Firmino, Son & DCL -> Albrighton, Quaner & Aguero (c) (-4)?

    Cheers

    Ryan Adrian
    Otamendi Jones TAA Lascelles Dunk
    Sterling Eriksen Alli Arnautovic Lanzini
