Eden Hazard is named amongst the subs as Willian fires Chelsea to victory against Dynamo Kiev. Arsenal are hammered in Munich as their injury worries ramp up at the back, Son Heung-Min returns to contention for Tottenham, whilst Daryl Janmaat is expected to be available for Newcastle’s trip to Bournemouth.

Willian Wins it for Blues

Chelsea sneaked a 2-1 home win over Dynamo Kiev courtesy of an own goal and a sublime free-kick from Willian in the 83rd minute. Jose Mourinho opted to bench Eden Hazard, fielding Oscar (left), Cesc Fabregas (number ten) and Willian (right) in behind Diego Costa. Pedro made a return to the subs bench and was called into action at the 79-minute mark, but Branislav Ivanovic didn’t make the matchday squad.

The Scout Says: Willian has undoubtedly been the Blues’ most consistent performer on the attacking front and now boasts four goals and three assists across all competitions. As such, the tireless Brazilian seems certain to retain his starting berth when Chelsea lock horns with Stoke at the Britannia Stadium, though there are question marks over who will fill the other two slots behind Costa going forward. Certainly, given that Mourinho felt compelled to demote Hazard for their crucial Champions League clash against the Ukrainian giants, it would be no surprise to see the 11.0-priced midfielder benched for the second league match in four Gameweeks. With showdowns against Norwich, Spurs, Bournemouth, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford following on from their Britannia clash, Willian – at just 6.8 in FPL – is looking a real differential punt, with a mere 3% ownership.

Defensive Concerns for Gunners

Arsenal were comprehensively outclassed by Bayern Munich as they fell to a 5-1 defeat at the Allianz Arena. Assisted by Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud netted a consolation goal in the 68th minute to starve the hosts of a shut-out. Mathieu Debuchy and Gabriel filled in for Hector Bellerin and Laurent Koscielny, though the latter was fit enough for the bench after sustaining a minor hip problem. Whilst Koscielny is expected to be passed fit for Sunday’s clash with Spurs, Arsene Wenger is far less optimistic on the young Spaniard’s prospects:

“I don’t think Bellerin will be available for Sunday but there is a small chance. From tonight we don’t have any new injuries.”

The Scout Says: Notwithstanding his limited starts this term, Giroud has amassed eight goals for the Gunners in just 869 minutes of pitch time in all competitions. The surfeit of strong options among the full roster of mid-priced forwards has somewhat overshadowed the fact that the 8.7-priced Frenchman has blanked just twice in seven outings (two starts) and faces match-ups against West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City, Sunderland and Aston Villa in the next four Gameweeks. Whilst his injury doesn’t look a long-term worry, Bellerin’s likely absence this weekend is a real blow for his 22% owners after he rose to second in the defender standings on the back of an assist and three clean sheets in the last four. Given that replacement Mathieu Debuchy had a torrid time against Danny Rose in the Gunners’ recent League Cup victory over Spurs, those Fantasy managers who’ve recruited the likes of Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen will feel a little more positive as Spurs look to breach a backline that’s conceded just once in their last four home matches at the Etihad.

Pochettino Handed Son Boost

Son Heung-Min has recovered from a foot injury and is available for selection when Tottenham Hotspur host Anderlecht on Thursday night – although Mauricio Pochettino is yet to decide whether he starts the South Korean winger. Elsewhere in the Lilywhites camp, Danny Rose is touch-and-go for the Europa League clash due to a dead leg but is expected to make the North London derby, while Nabil Bentaleb returned to training but is short of match fitness:

“Sonny is in the squad and in contention. We now have to decide if he plays from the beginning or if it’s better to put him on the bench. Nabil is training well but he’s not match fit yet. Danny is better, it was a dead leg but it’s not a big issue, he still has a chance, but we have a strong squad and if he isn’t 100% maybe we’ll wait until the next game.”

The Scout Says: Considering that Mousa Dembele has scored in back-to-back matches and Erik Lamela notched a goal and an assist in his previous two starts, Son faces a tough task to immediately reclaim his starting berth. Nonetheless, the 7.9-priced forward has three goals in five appearances in all competitions and furnishes Spurs’ attack with pace it otherwise doesn’t possess, providing Pochettino with food for thought. Although Delle Alli has been hugely impressive since his switch from League One outfit MK Dons in the summer, Bentaleb could earn a share of starts alongside Eric Dier, thus lightening the load on the 19-year-old and averting the risk of burn-out. Pochettino could also utilise Dembele in a deep-lying role too, if he chooses to hand Son a quick return to the first XI.

Magpies Optimistic on Janmaat

Newcastle coach Paul Simpson revealed that Daryl Janmaat trained on Tuesday and could be passed for the Magpies’ trip to Bournemouth, having been forced off late against Stoke City with a knee complaint:

“We are hopeful that Daryl is available for the weekend. He just jarred his knee. He has trained on Tuesday but sat out of Monday, which was only a light session anyway.”

The Scout Says: Over the last four Gameweeks, Janmaat managed just a single attempt on goal, marking a significant downturn in his goal threat of late. That being said, he’s displayed strong assist-potential over that stretch, with only three defenders racking up more key passes (six). Janmaat’s 3% ownership will be encouraged by the fact that Newcastle held the Potters to a 0-0 stalemate last time out and now embark on a decent trio of match-ups (bou, LEI, cry). The Cherries encounter looks particularly promising, given that no side has crafted fewer big chances (two) since Gameweek 8.

Who would you bench out of this attacking 8 this week?

    Sterling (AVL A) - KDB (AVL A) - Wijnaldum (BOU A) - Mahrez (WAT H) - Sanchez (TOT H)
    Lukaku (WHU A) - Vardy (WAT H) - Pelle (SUN A)

    Rare long post from me

Still seeing a constant flow of questions about when to play the AOA chip but the truth is, unless you get really lucky it has very little value. The chances of all of your front eight scoring well in the same week is minimal and even then you can bet one or more of your defenders on the bench also scores well. As far as I can see there are only two situations where it is worth playing.

    1) You have a front eight who all have good fixtures and can't decide who to bench.

While this won't guarantee you success and some will likely fail, it will at least ensure you don't bench the one with the highest score, but there is still a chance one or more defender scores better than some of your front eight. Risky if you have three def's also with good fixtures.. and you will still captain the wrong player 😉

    2) You can't field three defenders due to bans, injuries or being out of favour, or your 3rd, 4th and 5th defenders have terrible fixtures. Although it gives you a better chance of at least having eleven players, it's not likely to bring much success if Westwood or Wanyama is your fifth mid. There is also a risk one of your mid's doesn't play, your Bournemouth defender comes in away to Arsenal and you lose your chip.

Best bet for me? Probably wait until you have awful fixtures for defenders and use a freebie to upgrade 8th fwd/mid assuming you don't already have Ighalo or similar.

Waiting for when I can only field 2 defenders for whatever reason, otherwise it'll be used in the final few weeks as a punt.

      10 years, 1 month ago

I was in camp two with only 2 defenders available and luckily with Aguero out I also had a strong front 8 even if the fixtures weren't great.

Next year I might try what Champ did this year with AOA week 1 with 3 x 4.0 bench fodder, followed by Wildcard week 2.

I think the AOA chip is a perfect piece of insurance that lets you go a bit more spartan at the back, it probably allows you to cut your defensive budget by 1-1.5m

I agree, although the measure should be what AOA gets you vs what you would have done (not should have done)

For example, if I'd played AOA last week I'd have got Mahrez (15) instead of Evans (1) or Bellerin (6) as those are the players I was debating. A potential 14 points gained.

If you just look at it and say I should have played Mahrez instead of Payet and saved the chip you'd technically be right but it wasn't something I was ever likely to do.

No, and I'm basically agreeing with your scenario 1.

I was just commenting on the "The chances of all of your front eight scoring well in the same week is minimal and even then you can bet one or more of your defenders on the bench also scores well." bit.

You don't need all of your 8 attackers to have outscored your benched defenders for it to have been worth it, you just need your 8th attacker (the one you would have benched) to outscore your 3rd defender (that you would have played)

You're right. I had a week when i couldn't decide between Diouf v BOU, and Wilson v sto.

I knew everyone wouldn't score, but they were my only dilemma. Could've worked out OK if Wilson didn't get injured within 10 minutes, so i don't regret doing it. Not fussed that my defender ended up with more than Wilson's 1, it's the luck of the draw.

Won't the best time be during a double game week where you don't have to put a single game week player with a good fixture on the bench?

Maybe but then you can't use bench boost or triple captain in the DGW. Which many will want to do.

That's a great post, I had exactly situ (1) last week and considered using the chip as I've got a decent 5 man midfield and upfront have Pelle, Vardy and Ighalo. Instead I bottled it as I thought it was too early in the season to play any chips and benched Iggy who turned in a beauty of a score. Now I'm driving myself crazy scouring the fixtures for a week where the perfect storm will appear before me.......

Absolutely. I have often said that there will be about as many people gain from it as lose out due to playing it. Any net gain would be a chip well/luckily played.

      Completely agree!

Of the chips, AoA was the weakest / least "game changing" I think; it solves a problem only if you want to cut down on hits - I used mine during an injury crisis when I didn't want to go over a -4 hit (I'd never take a -8)

This week I've been seeing a lot of FFSers with ridiculously strong front 8 - I'd just never do it because of the constant benching headaches; you might as well not have such a strong front 8 in my view because you will never get to play them all, and this season is so unpredictable (see Mahrez benchers last week). Probably a better strategy (which I use) is to have a front 7 with a benchwarmer enabler to have a better quality to that front 7 than spreading the cash around the front 8...

However, I'd expect this trend to be abruptly curtailed when Kun comes back.

A point for those deciding between playing AOA Chip this Gameweek or next:

-Will players really come back from the international break in peak form and fitness
-Many will be tired and jet lagged after playing abroad and so could be rested when they return
-We all know that lots of injuries usually take place during intl breaks so you may find yourself on a hit next week which is not favourable when playing this chip

So I personally think playing it this week is much safer and has a higher ceiling for points/less chance of going wrong

I currently have the following team with 2FTs and £0.8m ITB:

    Cech
    Mignolet
    Kolarov
    Clyne
    Cresswell
    Kompany
    Smalling
    Ayew
    Mahrez
    Barkley
    Sánchez
    Mané
    Ighalo
    Bony
    Vardy

I want to free up some cash for buying KDB and Aguero by cheapening my defence. I am thinking of tranferring Kolarov (gonna be a sub after internationals and I already have Kompany) and Cresswell (too much points volatilty) for Alderweireld/Dier and Dan to give me some Spurs and Palace exposure with more money in the bank.

Does this sounds good or is there something else better?

Mignolet+Kolarov to Hennessey and Simpson and you get a lot of cash. Or maybe keep double City and downgrade Cresswell.

Hmmm I do plan to downgrade Mignolet but was saving it for next week or the week after.

Wow! Danny Simpson is dirt cheap! I was tempted by Schlupp but Simpson will gain me an extra million.
