Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

  1. Why don't you own Aguero yet?

So I was producing an Aguero stat attack for Mark, though he's already seen the light here it is anyway as I hope you'll enjoy it regardless.

With 90 goals, 35 fpl assists and 106 bonus points, this is Aguero in FPL over 4 and a half seasons:

    2, 6, 17, 13, 6, 6, 5, 2, 11, 2, 6, 5, 1, 13, 2, 8, 2, 2, 2, 11, 2, 7, 1, 7, 2, 19, 12, 6, 2, 6, 8, 2, 6, 2, 9, 11, 2, 2, 2, 5, 1, 2, 11, 11, 2, 9, 0, 2, 6, 2, 8, 12, 5, 2, 13, 7, 16, 8, 18, 2, 15, 1, 6, 6, 5, 4, 12, 2, 1, 2, 6, 2, 8, 7, 19, 2, 8, 13, 2, 7, 16, 1, 5, 5, 11, 9, 5, 2, 2, 2, 2, 12, 6, 6, 8, 23, 5, 6, 6, 2, 2, 5, 2, 25, 6, 2, 2, 2, 9, 2, 16, 12

797 points at 5.86ppg despite averaging only 72 minutes per appearance.

Taking just games where he played more than 60 minutes its 700 points at 6.48ppg.

Looking at droughts, his 5 game "goal drought" at the beginning of the season was his second longest in 9726 minutes of league football.

It was one of only 4 "goal droughts" longer than 270 minutes.

Looking at returns to blanks rates, he has scored 1 point 21 times, 2 points 37 times and 4+ points 78 times, this is a return in 57% of games.

Bear in mind 15% of his appearances were 1 pointers where he either got injured or was returning as a substitute.

Looking at double digit hauls, Aguero has scored 10+ points on 27(!) occasions or almost exactly on 1 in 5 appearances.

In games where he has completed more than 60 minutes Aguero's double digit haul rate rises to 25 in 106 appearances or just under 1 in 4 games.

Looking at Hat-tricks of returns, Aguero has scored 3 goals or assists 11 times, this is a rate of 4 15+ point hauls a season if fully fit.

This is what the best striker in the league looks like in FPL.

This is my problem with the 'debate' Every one knows how good Aguero is. I preferred mark's point as it was at least a bit deeper than the other side which was basically just shouting Aguero over and over. if Smalling was scoring like earlier in the season, the chelsea defence, hazard and Alexis were scoring like last season and De bruyne was scoring on the road too then its a valid debate. with none of those things happening all the saving being made by not having Aguero are not making gains elsewhere

Yep. I think basically I'm just anti template whenever possible and Aguero just seemed the arch-villain in my current crusade.

But, as you say, with little consistency from heavy hitters elsewhere, there really is little choice. Had Aguero stuttered and started slowly, then it might have been different.

That's not been the case. It was always a gamble but now the most important thing is to change tact, quickly.

        • 12 Years
        10 years, 9 days ago

This is the thing, I don't think there is a 'debate' to have on Aguero or whoever the best player in the league is. Last year only 1 person in the top 1K OR made it without ever owning Hazard and fewer than 10 made the top 10K without Kane, so there are people who can manage it but its leaping up the waterfall.

FPL is a game of about 150 decisions over a season and getting more right than you get wrong, but betting against the best player in the league is admitting you're almost definitely getting one of the biggest decisions wrong in the hope you can get lots of others decisions right elsewhere, which I think is a bit silly.

Also for your hindsight heroism comment below I've been banging the Aguero drum since pre-season, had a similar post then, I've owned him for every minute he's played this season, captained him 13 times and stayed here through the lows and the highs. So I'm sorry for sticking by my guns and enjoying when it goes well.

dont take it personally, you should be happy. i think it was a fair comment, the weight of comments in the past fortnight is stronger all round (from everyone!).

don't think it's betting against the best player in the league, that's too simple. aguero has to be the best player in the league to break even given that there's no one within 2mil of him. it's then what he does on top of that, over long spells and with other players taken into account and the captaincy taken into account.

the irony is i actually think those figures actually do aguero a disservice as i think he's a better player now under pellegrini than he was under mancini. one of the factors being pellegrini trusts his body with more minutes and he's the number one pen taker now, before he lost out on a fair few points to tevez. the figures if anything back up mark! for example i've had ighalo, kane and lukaku for 17, 15 and 14 gameweeks respectively now and they've each avergaed 6.5ppg in that time. those numbers actually make not getting aguero a wise decision! but in the last 2 gameweeks it's aguero 14ppg, ighalo 7ppg, kane 7.5ppg, and lukaku 2ppg, so getting aguero is a no brainer.

agree with what people say on captaincy. came away from games earlier in the season when aguero blanked shocked that he did. with kane and lukaku it's just a little surprising, no shocks.

Sorry I just get a bit antsy when people call hindsight on my posts. Of course across the population there's a selection bias of more happy people sticking around to post and I fully understand people who are upset with their scores not wanting to stick around but for me that's the journey of the season. Those with the OR come the end of the season (usually Mark) get the last laugh so just enjoy the ups and downs of the journey for what they are.

The thing for me with Kane, Lukaku and Ighalo is that they may have got 6.5ppg for half a season though I'm pretty sure each has been running a little hot to their own degree. But when's someone's done it for as long as Aguero, and continues to put up the underlying stats, that's just his expected performance.

When it come to finding the best value for your squad, I really believe Aguero has to go well above 14m before you start to question it. In pre-season I said Aguero was good value up until 13.7-13.8m to but that was with Hazard, Rooney and Sanchez all vying for attention. With the performances of the first two dropping off a cliff and Sanchez injured recently, VORP has been dead concept for a couple of months for me. With Sanchez returning the equation comes back slightly but not enough to stop Aguero being my first name on the team sheet.

should also add all these comments are coming last night and today because aguero has got back to back double figure scores. if he stuck to his average of one every five games or his 6.5 points per game then everyone is quiet. there's an element of hindsight heroism in today, but, ginkapo took the biscuit yesterday when getting louder and louder during the second half of the man city game yesterday, peaking with quite a disrespectfully worded comment then disappearing the instant Aguero got his second goal

My team and the players' selling prices (2FT, 0.9m ITB):

    Butland 4.9, Hennessey 4.0
    Alderweireld 5.8, Bellerin 5.8, Evans 4.8, Daniels 4.5, Simpson 4.0
    Silva 9.9, Ozil 9.5, Payet 7.8, Mahrez 6.5, Stanislas 4.2
    Aguero 13.2, Kane 9.6, Lukaku 8.9

    A) Waste a FT, it's perfect

But 30 transfers? We would'nt you just make them all before kickoff? I can't think -116 is intentional.

So my decision to bench Evans over Moreno Daniels and Kosc worked out well 🙁

And not owning Kun Aguero is working out well 🙁

Firmino potential owners, relax. That NOR defence display was completely inept and gifted the goals. I wouldn't be rushing to get him in before LEI. Would prefer KDB at Sunderland, Alli at Norwich and even Mahrez against them.

I know what you are saying but his role is slightly different. He is more likely to get hauled off after 60 than not start imo.

I wisk he was consistent. Always performs in 5-6 games spells and tends to go awol in big games.

Whilst I know that some with low scores will have endured a frustrating gameweek as plenty of players produced the goods I think this has been a fantastic week for FPL.

For a lot of the season we have had a template team that has produced the goods leading to a slightly stale feel to the game (especially those chasing like me) as gambles have consistently failed to pay off but I think this week we finally see options opening up. There is an array of mid-priced midfielders to choose between, with Payet's return and Firmino's emergence offering new opportunities/headaches, whilst Sanchez's likely comeback and Kun's goals mean we're being forced to think again about budget and how we use our cash, with many players also holding the costly Ozil, Lukaku and Kane. Defences are all over the place offering those willing to take a punt a bit of joy whilst the bigger teams struggle. Budget options all over the park continue to offer opportunity to save cash AND score points - Vardy, Mahrez and Ighalo are back on the points trail, perhaps tempting those considering selling them to hold a little longer.

After a number of really successful seasons I've found this year hard-going (OR approx 1m), but I do love a bit of FPL no matter what my position. But I think that this week may prove to be a turning point in the season that many will look back upon as a time where their season either took off (he said optimistically) or started sinking.

Lots of questions to answer, lots of options emerging. Big decisions to come in the next weeks I think. What are the decisions that you are pondering, where do you see your team succeeding/struggling in the weeks to come and which players are posing you a dilemma?

id focus all of my moves with dgw in mind, they have the biggest point swings in a season

Another exciting factor for me - the uncertainty of all the DGWs. Could be early and we hit jackpot OR we could be facing up to a team full of blanks before it happens. A few interesting injuries over the next 10 days during league cup/FA cup ties could make these decisions all the harder. As I say, at the risk of overloading on enthusiasm (I've had a good day...), it feels like a pivotal time of the season.

To answer my own question my big dilemma is in my midfield. With a great front 3 I can only play 4 a week and it's hard to justify losing any of Alli, Mahrez, Ozil and Barkley (great fixtures). I'm pondering losing Stanislas for one of Payet or Firmino with a view to benching Mahrez for a difficult upcoming 3 fixtures, but am aware that he is a dangerous player to leave on the bench, particularly with leaky Pool at home next. Alternatively I could ditch Mahrez for Payet/Firmino/Sanchez but know that I may well want him back in 3 weeks when Leicester's fixtures look very tasty indeed.

It's these kinds of dilemmas I've not had enough of this season - and I'm loving it!

So many great players around this season that there's a bit of guesswork involved. The best player in tonight's game walked away with only a couple of pts...but he was still a top pick.

Absolutely. Equally Kun was 2 hits of the woodwork (1 him, 1 Delph) away from a mega-score. Still a good (C) choice but could have been incredible. Fine margins!

              Nice post.

If you want to roll the dice and gamble, buy a strong 5th mid and bench Mahrez and his high ownership.

If you want to stay with the crowd and see your rank not rocket up or down, keep Stan and stay boring

Thanks. Based on my rank I really need to start gambling a bit more but I've been burned repeatedly this season. That's why I feel a bit more excited now, it feels that Mahrez-esque players will continue to bring in a decent number of points without being outstanding (perhaps controversially I would also include Ozil and Alli in this group) but other options are emerging that could smash them out the park... If you can pick them.

For my gamble I had been considering working towards having a decent number of Stoke, Leicester, Sunderland and Swansea players for good fixtures between GWs approx 27-32 and hope that they can give me a bit of an edge. It might be a bit suicidal but if it comes off it would be great. HOWEVER seeing the potential of some players it is becoming increasingly hard to see where I can create space to fit them in...

I'd disagree slightly. Barring the obvious (Aguero 13m 12pts), alot of the highly owned, cheaper players (basically top 10k template) returned to form this week with ighalo, vardy, mahrez all returning points after a run of blanks.

It could still be a turning point as you suggest though, if it turns out to be a bit of red herring or anomolous for these players and the more expensive 'big hitters' find some consistancy over the 2nd half of the season

Interesting and good point. But your post made me realise something else.

Perhaps it is BECAUSE some of the template players returned to form that I feel encouraged. It gives those in the top 10k reason to hold them longer, even if they aren't fantastic picks. In previous seasons I've been fortunate enough to be in some great positions but have at times been guilty of holding on to star performers for a bit too long as you even build up an attachment to them. Looking at the next 3 games for instance I would say that while some points are possible, Ighalo, Vardy and Mahrez don't have brilliant fixtures. But you know for sure that those holding them will think a little bit longer and harder before shipping them off. Perhaps holding them will be correct, but as someone pointed out above, if you're willing to take a punt elsewhere you could see some serious rank climbing going on.

Exactly. The high-scoring consistency of the budget players took an element of decision making away from the game, making the template unbreakable. With TV becoming a factor again at least now there a possibilities for the chasers to make inroads, with some good (lucky?) decisions

award points for winning pens, deducting points for conceding pens

I think winning a pen should be an assist because is in some cases, that player was going on to score/assist himself.

I like the idea of deduction of points for giving away pens. Like a -1 or something

Nah set piece assists are better. Mahrez, Sterling, Sanchez would get tonnes of points just for getting fouled! And over complicates things

I'd quite like points for pen wins and BPS points for X fouls drawn. Outright points for free kicks won would be too much,

I think to fairly reflect performances, the BPS should be exclusively used to dish out points. This brings rewards to all areas of the game (defensive midfielders for example) and removes perceived undue variation. For example a very threatening player with no final product or a player who has played very poorly and scores a fluke.

Although I understand that so much is subjective and some people would prefer only the true 'hard' stats.

Sanchez generally takes a while to get back into the swing of things after a long layoff. Firmino is also cheaper. He's your man

Really struggling this week what to do for the best so some sage advice very much appreciated. 2ft 3m ITB

              Butland Hennesey
              Toby Bellerin Simpson Dawson Sagna
              Ozil KDB Alli Mahrez Payet
              Aguero Lukaku Ighalo

              A. Ighalo-Kane, Dawson-Targett (or downgrade a different defender?)
              B. ighalo-Kane, KDB-Firmino (potentially swapping one dgw player for another)
              C. Anything else you might suggest.

I think Ighalo is great value but Kane against Norwich could be rewarding and Ighalo has some tough fixtures coming up

              Thank you kindly 😀

Sagna looks an obvious one to shift but with Sunderland next and a potential dgw (same with KDB) it's a real dillema hence my indecision

I'm actually thinking about switching to 3-5-2 and benching Ighalo. I got him at such a cheap price, plus I'd quite like him in GW27 when other players have blanks.

With two games tomorrow and midweek fixtures, early transfers could hurt this week.

Going to lose 0.1 and still want PAYET badly but even with two FT, I know I should wait.

Plus, we will know more about potential DGW soon.

I know FFS Mark has given in and gone for Aguero, but does anyone know who his other two transfers are?

It was Vardy. Zouma, & KdB, to Agüero, Targett & Alli

Surely Hart wont concede to PVA?

Anybody can concede to anybody this season. It's a great season for attackers but really a bit meh for defences.
