The Coutinho crossroads, the easy Sigurdsson option, the ongoing contest between Hazard and Sanchez and back peddling on Aguero. This and more form the key issues in and around Gameweek 13.

Coutinho blow could be a turning point…
With unconfirmed reports this evening stating that Philippe Coutinho will be sidelined until January, it’s likely that were on the verge of witnessing of a significant wave of change for both Liverpool and our Fantasy squads.

Jurgen Klopp’s side must learn to adapt without their principal architect. They have the talent to absorb losses, but having struggled to overcome the recent absence of Adam Lallana; this latest setback will be a huge concern to Klopp and Reds supporters alike.

Coutinho could dictate a match, prompting attacks with incisive runs and passing, as well as providing a significant threat from range and, this season, raiding the box. He’s a huge loss.

We can’t yet be clear on Klopp’s likely “Plan B”.

Lallana’s return could be a key factor and, from the noises today, that appears imminent – maybe even for Gameweek 14’s trip to Bournemouth.

Fantasy managers will clearly ship out Coutinho and be forced to study the impact on what remains of Liverpool’s attack.

The potential of Lallana, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane could be damaged by his absence, or even enhanced if Klopp builds a new system and distributes Coutinho’s duties.

It could even bring a new asset to light with Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi, Georginio Wijnaldum and Emre Can perhaps cementing a starting role and handed greater responsibility in providing and scoring goals.

Sigurdsson is tailor-made….
Coutinho’s absence appears almost syncronised with the ascent of Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson who, having performed well above his mid-price valuation in recent weeks, now appears to enter an irresistible spell, where form perfectly overlaps with fixtures.

Already earmarked as the obvious replacement for Liverpool’s Brazilian, Fantasy managers have been handed a clear route to follow; one that liberates funds for further spend elsewhere, increasing the transfer traffic heading in the direction of Spurs’ Harry Kane.

But Pedro has us thinking…
While Sigurdsson is the path of least resistance, Chelsea’s Pedro is performing at a level which ensures we perhaps need to carefully consider our options for filling the Coutinho void.

The threat from Willian over the busy schedule will always loom over the Spaniard. However, given his current form and the pivotal role he’s played in Chelsea’s stunning run of results, Pedro appears cemented as Antonio Conte’s first choice on the right of his front three.

Currently priced at just 7.3 in the Fantasy Premier League, he screams out as a potential bargain differential – particularly for those missing one or both of Eden Hazard and Diego Costa.

The Sanchez vs Hazard argument isn’t over yet…
And that brings us to a contest that seems destined to rage on.

Indeed, Pedro plays his part in this, undermining Hazard’s appeal somewhat by offering that cheaper and in-form cover of Conte’s attack.

Pedro’s sublime goal against Spurs was the first blow to Hazard in Gameweek 13; Sanchez’ brace on Sunday the second and most damaging.

We saw cries of frustration from those who, following Hazard’s haul against Everton, sacrificed Sanchez in the trade.

We knew that the Chilean was always capable of burning us as a result of such a move and yet, the tables could easily be turned week on week.

Hazard’s fixtures from Gameweek 15 remain vastly superior and, if the trade enabled Fantasy managers also to swoop for Marcos Alonso, Sanchez will surely be required to go on delivering consistent double figure hauls over the Christmas period.

An explosive asset, Sanchez is not renowned for his propensity to deliver goals over four consecutive matches as Hazard has achieved already this season.

However, equally, we have seen Hazard lapse into prolonged dips that provide a series of blanks and, after failing to return over his last two Gameweeks and with a trip to the Etihad next, this is a debate that seems destined to run and run.

Walcott may yet have a say…
Just as Pedro is a factor in Hazard’s stock, so Theo Walcott influences our thinking on Sanchez.

While the gap between the Chelsea men is 2.9, Walcott can be acquired for 3.5 less than his team-mate Sanchez.

Can he possibly provide compensation for Sanchez’ future hauls?

That’s a key question. We know that, as it stands, Walcott appears destined for his best season in Fantasy terms. His starting role seems more secure than ever, his output and underlying stats re-assuring.

He may get benched at least once in the coming month but, as we have seen in past seasons, like Giroud, Walcott can be a more than capable impact sub.

Sanchez is surely peerless as cover of Arsenal’s attack, but 3.5 is a significant slice of funds that can be used to augment the squad for a vital and unpredictable Christmas spell.

Shut-outs are just gravy for McAuley…
Tony Pulis will not be content with West Brom’s clean sheet tally.

Three shut-outs is a humble collection for a side so disciplined and drilled to restrict their opponent.

But while that casts some doubt on Baggies’ defenders as Fantasy assets, Gareth McAuley seems immune to such concerns due to his undeniable and seemingly unstoppable threat at set-pieces.

Pulis sets his team up to win points from dead-ball scenarios, and McAuley is clearly his key weapon.

Defences know this but seem unable to prevent him from being a factor.

The Aguero jitters are over….for now…
We were prepared to carry out the unthinkable and evacuate Sergio Aguero. But, typically, the Argentine was never going to make it an easy decision.

His two-goal return at Burnley was somehow conjured from a disjointed Manchester City display; Aguero converted scraps into goals and points without the class of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva as a supply.

That was enough to force some to reconsider, the injury to Coutinho only compounded matters, freeing up funds that enabled a move for Kane or Costa without sacrificing the City striker.

We might be settled on Aguero for now, but the jitters remain and will likely return in a few Gameweeks time.

Such is the price gap between Aguero and a chasing pack of strikers, we will likely always feel the need to check that he justifies selection.

A run of blanks, a minor injury or even indication that he’s part of Pep Guardiola’s rotation plans could trigger more doubt. It appears to be a unwanted feature of our season.

Lukaku has regressed to old ways…
While Aguero is cause for debate, there is perhaps little argument on Romelu Lukaku.

Many of us always felt that his early season form and consistency may have a shelf life.

Admittedly, I was more positive – convinced that he may be on course for a 25-goal campaign. Sadly, I appear to have been proved wrong: regression has set in and, as is so often is the case, Lukaku has been unable to overcome Everton’s slump in form to keep his tally ticking.

Sales were underway weeks ago; Sunday’s third successive blank which saw the Belgian muster just a single dead-ball effort on goal ensured they would accelerate.

With Kane’s tempting fixtures dangled before us and Coutinho’s plight making funds available, the case to retain Lukaku appears flimsy.

Austin won’t let us settle on Defoe…
In opposition to Lukaku and Everton on Sunday, Charlie Austin took less than a minute to heighten the alert on his potential.

It appears to be a straight fight between Austin and Jermain Defoe, two experienced marksmen gagging for international recognition, for our third striker slot in a 3-4-3.

Defore deserves more time having toiled in a defensive display at Anfield and, with the obliging Leicester City rearguard next to the Stadium of Light, there’s every reason for optimism.

But Austin could yet operate at a higher level – Southampton have the potential to raise their game once their Europa League schedule is disposed of, while the fixture list suggests that Austin could thrive and out pace Defoe.

We’re already convinced on lucky charm Cedric…
There’s perhaps less debate surrounding the appeal of Cedric Soares as a Southampton asset.

Re-installed in Gameweek 12, Claude Puel’s defence has already kept back-to-back clean sheets on his return and, rather spookily, they are yet to keep a shut-out without the Portuguese named on the teamsheet.

That’s likely to be a convenient coincidence rather than a solid theory but, regardless, we’re already convinced of Cedric’s potential.

The pair of bonus points in Southampton’s win over Everton, surpassing Virgil van Dijk in the Bonus Points System (BPS), offered another reminder of the value that the 4.9 option can offer.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

All this 'can't afford Aguero' stuff is complete gash. I have 5 bigguns' in my team rounded off in attack by the best value pick in the game(Chaz Austin) and the cheap midfielder of the moment(Zaha). OK defence needs a change but I still have the money for it tied in some cr**per called Fuchs and takes a couple of moves. My team value isn't event that lit' compared to some of the stingy b****rds on ere'.

Kind of similar team to mine, but we haven't owned Alonso for example, who got 6 clean sheets in a row.

Basically I agree, but people are playing with different tactics.

Yeah, no Alonso is a bugger but you can find value in defence all the time, most of the consistently successful FPL teams are always top heavy with one heavy hitter max.

Yeah I agree. wildcarded for GW12 and left out Alonso.

Fairly content with my team now, although 1/2 WBA defenders need to be sorted after Watford
          Heaton, Pickford
          McAuley, Evans, Nyom, Holebas, Kingsley
          Sanchez, Hazard, Siggy, Snodgrass, Allen
          Kun, Kane, Austin

You need to do something about that West Brom defense surely, maybe take McAuley out as he provided the goals/price rises already and he's unlikely to find the back of the net as consistently as he has. I have Nyom and am pretty happy. Great team by the way, though not sure about Allen as a 5th mid seems a bit pricey...

              Cheers.

Yep definitely need to do something. Just took a punt on tripling up in 3 game weeks after wildcard. So far an average of 6 points per game per player, so hoping for it to continue one more game. Good chance of a CS against Watford in my opinion. Bet365 even says it is better than Soton's away at Palace, so trying my luck again 🙂

I agree that Allen is too expensive/a bad option for 5th. But with Burnley at home and probably being back in #10 role I am keeping for one last match.

My plan is Allen -> cheapie + Evans -> Cedric next week.

              Thanks.

I think Cedric looks like great value at 4,9, but waiting a week to get him, as I see Soton conceding away at Palace.

Also Alonso is looking like a very good player, but not sure if I can afford him.

Will be looking closer at who rotates well with WBA and Holebas...

Are you holding any WBA defenders for their good run GW 20-27 (excluding GW 21 Spurs)?

Cedric looks like the prime option with fixtures and attacking threat. I think i'm sort of accepting that i've missed the train on Alonso and moved on, could be a bad move but it's better to look at value and keep your front 8 'balance' settled. Will be holding Nyom while he's nailed on at 4.3 but Evans might go, 0.2m is a lot in my defence 😛

Haha yeah I have sort of given up on Alonso a bit. Should have gotten him in on the WC in GW 12 if I really wanted him.

Yeah if Nyom keeps playing he is great value in my opinion. Evans should have gotten attacking returns against Burnley to be fair, but I think he is the first one to go in my team as well. YC magnet as well. Have an AOA-chip to play, so will be keeping at least 2 WBA refsfor GW 20-27. Plus McAuley has a chance of scoring against anyone.

haha yep that 0.2 can mean a lot 😉

Had some discussion on this a bit earlier: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/11/28/this-much-we-know-gameweek-13-4/?hc_page=8#hc_comment_14531368

My personal eye test of watching Fer this season is that he's becoming a bit of a menace in the box, and the stats do actually seem to confirm his seriously underappreciated potential. Remember, he has 6 goals in 13 games so far this season, despite only playing 969 minutes so far. It actually gives him a better pts per minute ratio than Gylfi.

Here is something that really surprised me for started. Fer is actually preferred by the bonus points system so far, despite having 4 fewer FPL points. He's averaging 21bps/90 mins, compared to Gylfi's lower 18.3bps/90 mins. This is no fluke either, and it seems to be a take on the Antonio-Payet theory. Gylfi seems to be the chief assister and has more long-range shots, whereas it's actually Fer who is the more attacking from a shots perspective. Fewer long-shots and on various shot maps you can see he's pinging many shots from very close quarters, which is directly translating into that high goal tally he has so far:

    - Gylfi 1.59 chances created per 90. Fer just 0.37
    - Surprisingly, Fer is completing ~36 passes a game, vs Gylfi at just 21, so this may be related to the lower Bps/90 for Gylfi. Average pass length is similar too so it's not just lots of short-passes.
    - Gylfi 3.51 shots per 90, Fer at 2.32
    - But, Gylfi shots in the box per 90 is 1, Fer has 1.58

There is a slight question mark around Gylfi's playing position. The shooting stats are skewed upwards by his deployment into the false 9 position, whereas Fer has been fairly more consistently playing within the core midfield ranks. Of course, that might continue anyway, although Llorente is a factor.

TL:DR, Gylfi is the premium option, but for those with cash strapped teams, Fer is not what I would call a pounds-per-point downgrade at all.

Lately there's been a lots of difference in opinions on who is essential

The thing is you cant fit all the big hitters You just have to go with a certain combination and hope for the best

Depending on budget If you have 4-5 from below

      - Hazard Sanchez KDB Firmino Mane Aguero Kane Costa Ibra

And 2 from below you will be fine

      - Austin/Defoe -- Eriksen/Siggy/Walcott/Pedro -- Fer/Snoddy/Zaha/Phillips--

      Agree ?

5-2 with a decent defence. (Alonso cedric pieters evans amat)

Maybe its because i chose Zaha from second list. Zaha could become fer in 2gw;s if he looks threatening and nailed

No. The 7.0m strikers are too fixture-bound and the 5.5m mids are a complete lottery. A 4-4-2 structure is better. Have 6 attackers you want rather than 5 you want and 2 you are stuck with.

Disagree on 7m strikers. Austin and Defoe are great 3rd strikers and will continue to offer value thorughout the season

Agree on 5.5 mids. Likes of Zaha Fer Phillips and Snoddy are loterry

if you dont lke 5.5 mids you can get mids from 7-8 m range but that means you have one less big hitter 😉

Not sure I agree they are a "lottery" if you stick with them through 5-6 gameweeks of strong fixtures. Add Chadli / Stanislas / Redmond, to a lesser extent even Moses, etc. and there are a lot of 5m-6m midfield options that can outscore a similarly priced defender over the long run.

But it doesn't work that way.

Look at Redmond, he had 10 pts in GW1, 9 in GW8 and 9 in GW9. Every other week 3 or less. Where's the sequence? You couldn't even have got GW8&9 because one of those was away at City and the fixture run was whu lei BUR mci CHE - not a run of strong games. It was hard for anything but a dead team to get those GW8&9 points.

Or look at Snodgrass. Hull's kind fixture run (when many were getting Snodgrass in) began in GW8. Admittedly he missed one game through injury but he has averaged 3.5 points per game in that period.

Theoretically what you say sounds nice. In practise those kinds of player are very unpredictable.

Disagree. If you own a 4th mid, play him. I don't rotate. De Roon is my 5th mid. If I own Redmond as a 4th mid, that means I believe he has the ability (in this day and age, all teams do) to score against anyone. So I play him every week, in that slot, even against City and Chelsea. Sure, if he blanks 3-4-5 times in a row I may shift him and miss the points, but if you WATCH the games (as I do) and a player looks confident / creative / attacking I am fine with being patient.

I'm not taking about rotation. I'm taking issue with what you actually wrote.

You talked about having them for "5-6 gameweeks of strong fixtures". Redmond's main points came in the middle of 5-6 gameweeks of tough fixtures, didn't they? At the very time when you might well have switched him for Snodgrass (as many did) who has averaged 3.5 points per game since then.

These types of player are quite unpredictable. The equivalently priced defenders are less unpredictable and offer just as high an upside. There are other reasons why I'd prefer 4-4-2 right now but that is one of them.

Fair enough - I have played the game for 12 years and most years prefer to use 4 or 5 midfielders so always need to find someone in the 5m-6m range to make the economics work.

Players like Joy Barton historically one season, Kevin Nolan, even Mahrez last year, etc. can fit the bill and I think that someone like Redmond (perfect example) can do so as well for long stretches. It comes down to active management vs passive management in certain areas. Many people ignore the back four and focus on attacking players when making transfers (priority order) but ignoring a 4th midfielder who passes the eye test (like a Redmond) and focusing elsewhere isn't a bad strategy. I understand your emphasis on the volatility but at the end of the day Snodgrass is on penalties and free kicks, on 4.7 ppg, and had a 14pt game one week after Redmond's "hard" fixtures (Chelsea/ManCity) - so if you made that switch, you would have benefitted from a 14pt explosion - good enough for 3+ gameweeks... Agree to disagree and you make very valid points, but the game is all about timing, and these mid priced players, when on form (or set piece duties like Snodgrass) can provide significant upside that defenders can't for the same budget.

                  Agree as well.

perfect example can be zaha. he got retuns against mci liv at home and lei and bur away which are tough fixtures

he;s looking confident and with his current form he can be a good option over december period against any team

Hmm interesting. Not a big fan of expensive defence though especially this season where defences cant keep cs

Or Valencia from GW16. Or Clyne. How about Alderweireld? I'd far rather base my team on players like that than messing with the likes of Snodgrass and Austin.

Austin? Proven PL goalscorer and in form - tremendous third striker option (don't own him myself) but he will surely outscore even the most goalscoring defenders. Guess it's just personal preference for me to always play 3 at the back and look for explosive mid/forward scores as it's rare (other than the years of Baines which are long gone, etc.) to get explosive scoring defenders.

...which he won't start all of. But hey, it's opinions, right? Austin is OK if you must have a striker around 7.0m. I think you are better with Anichebe and an extra 2.2m to play with to create a good 4-4-2 myself.

I had Aguero, Lukaku and Anichebe last week.

Selling Lukaku and it's really hard to find someone else I want. I think Kane is too expensive and Costa's yellows still worry me. Agree that the likes of Defoe and Beneteke are too fixture dependent, and that Austin will probably miss GWs 16 & 19.

I even considered 4-5-1 with Aguero, Anichebe, Barrow, a huge midfield and all-star defence.

I know that CSs are rare this year but players like Alonso and Brunt are just as good in attack as a £5.5 winger / centre-mid from a bottom-half team.

Go for Costa if you have enough in the bank for a free transfer from Lukaku. You won't regret it by Xmas, even if he does miss a game.

You're probably right. I was happy with Lukaku instead of Costa until a couple of weeks ago, and I've been looking at the Spurs and City games and thinking surely he'll get booked in one of those.

The fact that he can avoid YCs if he wants and so his playing style seems to be deliberate - rather than him getting too emotional - makes me think less of him TBH (not that this matters in FPL).

                  Interesting discussion.

If I may ask how your ideal 4-4-2 team look like? How many rounds will it take for you to achieve this lineup and how many hits would you have to take?

Few teams are set up for 4-4-2 in their current state and reverting simply cost more transfers than staying within the same formation. Without knowing the current team I think it is really difficult to determine best formation. However, I think I agree that more heavy investing in defence is the way to go through christmas.

I brought in Jenkinson for last GW only to find to my horror that Debuchy had replaced him. Now that Debuchy and Bellerin are side lined I'm hoping he might get a run out.

Transferred Coutinho & Walcott & Kane, fairly happy with those moves.

Keeping Fuchs and Gündogan as the former is still involved in much of the Foxes attacking play and hoping they tighten up against Sunderland, Bournmouth & Stoke. The latter surely can't be completely out of the picture at Man City for a PP of 5.4?

Sergio and Chaz upfront, the latter is a great poacher and the former needs no explanation

      Your thoughts much appreciated.

He should start he's one of their best players but Ake seems to be first choice at centre-back, and this has pushed Francis to right-back. Isn't Francis captain?

I'd love for Adam Smith to play right midfield again this week but that would mean dropping someone like King or Stanislas.

I thought the same but it basically came down to AUSTIN/SIGGY vs KANE/PHILLIPS. It was a very tough decision.

I chose the latter because I can captain Kane 2 or 3 of the next 4 gameweeks and can always get Siggy in the near future if he keeps scoring as have both Walcott and Firmino in his price range.

if you already had Costa I can see why it's a tough decision, that's for sure..I didn't and was replacing Lukaku (and had Austin)

got it, yes. Already had Costa. was very tough and chose for (C) option. Inevitably Aguero will get injured and I'll bring Austin or Ihenacho in then I guess... ha.

Nope. 2 of them plus one of Austin/Defoe is the way to go

Your midfield or defence must be somewhat light if you go with those 3 upfront

He did last weekend. Pulis said he was keen to get Chadli back in but couldn't when the team had been playing so well. Chadli was fit and on the bench.

Ah okay. Completely missed that. Just thought Pulis was trying to ease Chadli back into the game. Although I guess this is slightly different, when it won't be changing a winning side that just battered Burnley 4-0, but a side that drew against Hull..

good point but Pulis LOVES out and out wingers and bought Phillips this summer to do just that. He's fast / direct / in his prime - very similar to the Stoke wingers under Pulis years ago (ETHERINGTON / PENNANT) and even Crystal Palace under Pulis (Puncheon was tremendous under Pulis). He loves that direct style (Pulis) and I believe Phillips will continue to benefit and thus provide value.

                  1) Maturation as a player
                  2) In a better side w/ Pulis tactics focused on wide play as top priority to attack,
                  3) Prime of his career at age 25 in terms of physical attributes
                  4) Wingers historically inconsistent - by the nature of the game they are on the periphery (look at Walcott/Iwobi even) but when they grab a goal or assist they can get confident for 1-2 months and really run at people - he may be in that moment right now.
                  5) Scored 8 goals in the Championship last year, wouldn't be surprised if he finished with 6-7 in the Premier League this year (4-5 more) which at 5.2M or whatever he is would be tremendous.

Cheers. May have to reconsider Phillips GW20-27 then. Just wrote him off because when I analyzed his stats and threat with Chadli it showed his involvement increased by a lot in the games without Chadli this season. Can't really write that off to maturation as a player, but you could definitely be right.

Fair enough - haven't looked at the stats as much as watched the games. Both approaches are solid. I am giving him 3 more weeks (Watford, Chelsea, Swansea). A "medium" game, a "hard" game, and an "easy" game. If he impresses me enough and continues to play 90 mins per even with Chadli's return, I will keep him regardless of output. If he is subbed early, and blanks three times in a row, can always make a switch in 17 as he has ManU/Arsenal in 17/18, but ManU without Bailly/Smalling aren't amazing at the back so who knows...

True. To be honest I didn't watch a lot of WBA games in the beginning of the season so had to rely mostly on stats 🙂 Watched the last where he has been looking very good.

We will see. I will be keeping an eye on him for the next game weeks and if he, as you say, keep up his performances and returns, I will definitely be looking at him in GW20.

McAuley has scored 3 goals this season compared to Holebas 2 and 1 assist, so if you are only looking at attacking potential, play McA...

Also better chance of CS, less likely to be subbed or get a yellow card.

I know statistically McAuley has more goals, but he's not as attacking as Holebas, who's playing as a wing back. McAuley won't score headers in back to back games, will he?

Agreed he is not positioned as high on the field as Holebas, but returns are returns.
Don't like the argument that he can't score back to back games. Because you just rolled a dice and got 6, the chance of the next roll being a 6 is still 1/6. I get your point, but don't think it is a valid one tbh. You can argue that Watford is a better defence or that Pulis is more inclined to rely on set pieces playing away than at home.

Go with your gut of course although I think it wouldn't be the logical choice.

They made Stoke look like Barcelona for much of it, score could have been much more lopsided. And Britos is suspended next match _and_ other defenders could miss with injuries. Hang on to your West Brom players for gw14.

        Foster (Pickford)
        Cedric Walk Evans (Holebas Amat)
Haz Sanchez Firm Allen (de Roon)
        Kane Aguero Austin

0.1 ITB, would love to upgrade Allen to Siggy though and possibly get in Alonso

I have Aguero, Austin and 5 across the middle: Haz, Sanch, Firm, Chadli and now Alli.

Nobody has Alli and I think it's a fair differential into Spurs for coming fixtures. A definite huge gamble as absolutely everyone will go for Siggy and Wallly.

Jeez, looking ahead to GW 15, I have no idea where I'm fitting Chelsea in? Nothing in the bank too. The only one possible transfer seems Kane to Costa but I just brought Kane in. Have to keep Kun for the leicester. Juiciest fixture in a while for Kun.

      Firmino Mane Wally Siggy
      Kane Kun Austin

Mane has West Ham at home. So good that fixture. Wally to Pedro better?

      The route back to Sanchez

      Arsenal fixtures from GW18 read:

WBA CPL bou swa BUR WAT che HUL

Slightly nervous times going without Sanchez here if he is still starting up front. Looking at CHE and LIV fixtures over the same time period:

Chelsea: BOU STO tot lei HUL liv ARS bur
Liverpool: STO MCI sun mun SWA CHE hul TOT

Liverpool's fixtures become slightly more mixed with three very tough home games and United away.

My route back to Sanchez could be

Walcott > Sanchez - worth two FT?

        I mean

Walcott > sub 6m midfielder and Firmino > Sanchez

looks good - have you owned Siggy the last 4-5 weeks or is he a new acquisition? If you've managed to keep Ibra for his last few games where he delivered, then that's a nicely set up side. Weak at the back of course and don't love playing Anichebe or Capoue every week but otherwise solid...
