Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 16

We begin our look ahead to Gameweek 16 with the launch of our Captain Poll and an assessment of the key candidates for the armband.

The 857,000+ (15.9%) of managers who handed Harry Kane (12.8) the captaincy at the weekend were again left bitterly disappointed following his failings in a bruising 1-1 draw with Watford.

Indeed, since topping our Gameweek 13 poll with a whopping 40% support, confidence in Kane appears in steep decline. The striker has failed to figure in the top two poll spots ahead of Gameweeks 14 and 15.

Nevertheless, Kane still marginally leads this week’s poll and has to remain a major consideration for a home fixture with Stoke City. Despite Spurs’ recent struggles, the striker has still fired a league-high 21 shots from his last four Gameweeks, though that includes just two attempts at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

Stoke’s defence is perhaps more of a factor. While Kane and Spurs have been frustrated by teams successfully defending in numbers at Wembley Stadium, the Potters’ rearguard has conceded 30 goals this season; only West Ham (32) have shipped more. Mark Hughes backline have also surrendered 12 big chances in their previous four away trips – no side have allowed more.

Once again, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (10.8) will be a key rival to Kane at the top of our poll.

The Belgian put forward a convincing case for the captaincy with a brace and maximum bonus returns in Gameweek 15. His underlying statistics from the 3-1 win over Newcastle United were also staggering – nine shots, with seven inside the box, offered further evidence that the No 10 role has transformed his goal threat.

Hazard has five goals and assisted a further three over his last six starts, while the aforementioned West Ham defence will be stretched to contain a player who has produced two of his three double-figure returns in away matches. Hazard also delivered in the corresponding fixture last season, finding the net in a 2-1 victory for the Blues.

Alvaro Morata (10.8) is another Chelsea asset poised to profit from the London derby. A point-blank header against the Magpies was the Spaniard’s third goal in five starts and with five of his nine efforts arriving in away matches, Morata will also be backed to punish the Hammers.

The Gameweek 15 poll leader – Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (9.9) – will again garner heavy support.

He faces a Merseyside derby with Everton at Anfield having been put in the shade by Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino in the 5-1 win over Brighton on Saturday.

Salah’s 53% ownership had to settle for just an assist from the south-coast victory, but with eight goals in his last seven Gameweeks, they will remain confident of an improved haul for the Toffees visit.

Everton have the third-worst defensive record this season, shipping 28 goals, though the influence of new manager Sam Allardyce could be a factor in Sunday’s encounter.

Back-to-back clean sheets will also give them confidence and could temper interest in Salah and differential captaincy options Firmino and Coutinho.

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s attack could also attract votes ahead of a visit to Southampton.

While suffering defeat to Manchester United in Gameweek 15, the Gunners impressed with 33 shots, 19 from inside the United penalty area.

Alexandre Lacazette (10.3) eventually beat the majestic David De Gea in the United goal and now tallies three strikes and an assist from his last five Gameweeks. However, with just one double-figure score to his name – back in Gameweek 6 against West Brom – the Frenchman’s credentials as a viable captain option remain in question.

Aaron Ramsey is another in Arsene Wenger’s ranks to consider. The Welshman has provided attacking returns in all but one of his last seven starts, including two double-digit hauls.

Similarly, Alexis Sanchez (11.8) has four goals and an assist over his last seven Gameweeks, including a pair of 10+ scores. He remains a potentially powerful differential as part of just 2.7% of squads.

However, Mauricio Pellegrino’s side are making progress. They ran out 4-1 victors over Everton last time out at St Mary’s and, over their past four home matches, have allowed just a single big chance, fewer than any other home defence.

Meanwhile, the potential on offer at both Manchester clubs is perhaps reduced by Sunday’s other derby clash.

Man City’s rotation in attack continued in Gameweek 15, rendering both Sergio Aguero (11.7) and Gabriel Jesus (10.4) as risky armband options. However, the midweek Champions League fixture with FC Shakhtar Donetsk could yet offer clues on the likely starters at Old Trafford.

The City midfield perhaps provides greater security, with both Kevin De Bruyne (10.2) and David Silva (8.2) appearing assured starters against United.

But Raheem Sterling (8.3) and Leroy Sane (8.8) are the more explosive options.

Again, Wednesday’s teamsheet will be key to deciphering Pep Guardiola’s plans for the pair, although both will be expected to be named on the teamsheet to provide key threats to the United defence.

Paul Pogba’s dismissal at the Emirates Stadium means that he misses Sunday’s encounter, which leaves Romelu Lukaku (11.4) as the sole Red Devils representative in our poll. But with one goal from the previous eight Gameweeks, his form hardly warrants attention and is reflected by continued heavy sales in the FPL market.

Our poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 16 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Kane CLEAR favourite at 3/1 in the "Two score two or more goals" market this weekend (Salah next best at 5/1). Paddy et al obviously a little fearful that he's found his shooting boots somewhere.

He's not in my team, either.

I wonder what the odds of him scoring a brace or more were against Watford, or in fact any poor defensively team he has played.

Until Tottenham start to look like a decent team again I will be not be confident of Kane scoring twice, even though he looks OK - if a little fatigued. I think they've mentally written off the Premier League and will not be themselves again until they've finished their ECL campaign. (and Toby is back)

Someone talk me out of doing Sane to Martial -4

    Sane:
Not on form, City aren't scoring 5 goals a game anymore and on 4 yellow cards. Fixtures aren't great either and seems to be stuck to the touchline.

    Martial:
Think Mourinho has finally realised that he is United's best attacking player. On good form, playing almost down the middle (imo his best position) and fixtures couldn't be much better. Seems to be somewhat "nailed" too.

        This

No Pogba will mean a major tactical change for mourinho vs city which could involve a few spanners in his team sheet.

If he plays well, yes. He started brilliantly this season but his form and starts are not consistent. No Pogba seems to have v negative effect on goals per game of MU

I understand why you may want to do it, but I cannot see martial outscoring Sane.

But definitely not worth a -4.

Wait until next week, but then city have Swansea so Sane could easily get a double digit haul then......

In the long term I think Martial will start more than Sane tbh. I'm not expecting the hit to pay off this week (might even backfire) but Martial looks amazing this season.

So is Lacazette injured or not? Does anyone know the full details, as I'm getting mixed info. I know he started against Man Utd but there's still rumours he could miss games. But with Arsenal's fixture list looking nice for December, I want some Arsenal attack in there.

    Hi Experts,

    Need a piece of advise.
I am planning to use WC and planning to invest heavy on my Midfield with 4.5ish Defs and under 6.5ish Forward line of Austin,Bony,Calwert-Lewin.

MF : Hazard, Sanchez, Salah, Eriksen, DeBruyne

I just did some research in order to find out how would that have returned me in last 5 GWs and the results are:
    GW 15: 33
    GW 14: 37
    GW 13: 30
    GW 12: 51
    GW 11: 29

Currently I have invested heavy in DF & FW with the players like
    Alonso,Vertonghen, Walker, Jones
    Aguero,Kane,Morata

What do you reckon, should I stick with current team of heavy investment in DF & FW or switch to heavy MF team.

    Thanks in advance.

      just some balance

you can lose Kun, Walker, Vert, maybe Jones (although i hear he is back in training so maybe hold), and then upgrade mids

Heavy mf but not that heavy. There's better value than Sanchez and Eriksen atm (e.g. coutinho) and the rest of your team would be absolutely dire with those 5!!

All you need is balance. Trends move throughout the year, don't follow them to their grave e.g. if defs are doing well don't pile in on 4 expensive ones, forwards are doing well don't get 3 premiums, in the end you'll be stuck with bad scores when the trend changes. Be balanced and you'll find your does are more consistent.

    Starting team at the moment:

    Azpilicueta
    Daniels

    Salah
    Sterling
    Hazard
    Loftus-Cheek
    Kane
    Morata

    Bench:

    Elliot
    Jones
    Kenny
    Diouf

Any thoughts on what players to potentially bring in..?

I do the love the scoutcast and it is the main FPL scouting I do all week - and I must give a shoutout to Jonty for bringing it to life and making it what it is.

But... you can really tell he is a journalist by trade - spouting a load of varying sensationalist headlines each week without ever taking into account what he said in the previous weeks or addressing why his previous view was completely wrong! And the others never hold him to account for it, despite his constant reminder of Mark's WC!

Pure tabloid FPL, but I love it!

    1. Deulofail

Yeah this site is a hobby for all its contributors (often a serious hobby). But it's not exactly streamlined to make the maximal improvements to our FPL minds and scores. Just a place to hang out to pedal stories and opinions. The kind of thing we humans are already addicted to anyway 😀

100% I listen to the scoutcast every week, but I feel like it needs more Luke. I find his opinion very interested as it is often against the gain and a bit maverick. The others are very template imo.

Agree completely. His teams have an x factor which is needed to win any game, take for example his triple Saints defence at the start of the season. Mark is always going to have a better HOF rating, but is too conservative to win FPL imo.

Scoutcast is good but i think they need to change clean sheets and Captains thing.
In those 15min ex. they can pick some questions from live chat and make it more interesting and get more views.

I like it but when that part comes i dont watch it,we know which defenders we gonna play and who to (C).
Maybe they can throw in something new to shake things up.

ML rival I'm chasing has abandoned Spurs to hop aboard the Hazard and Morata express...makes me very tempted to tactically bring back Eriksen for Sterling (FT) to try and gain some ground...bold, doomed to fail or worth the punt? Cheers 🙂 1FT 1.3 ITB.

I'm quite sure a team based on Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs (and ignore City) can compete with the City-go-round...Spurs won't continue to score so few for long...

I want City cover, so is this the way to do it:
Alonso-> Kenny or someone around the 4.5 mark
    Gross-> Sterling

Brought in Hazard...how does this look?

    Courtois

    Mee/Daniels/Kenney (Naughton/Mbemba)

    Salah/Silva/Richarlison/Hazard/RLC

    Morata/Kane (Niasse)

How does scoring differ from fpl to Telegraph? Do you need to load up more on defenders? 4/5 at the back?

    1. Deulofail
      • 8 Years

Don't need to do anything 🙂

Most people play 3 or 4 defenders a week, but a playing 5th defender is advised at this time of the year due to possible rotation.

I'm a huge fan of Kane, i have him and i have no imtentions of selling him but i can't understanf why are people going to cap him over Haz.

Spurs are awefull at the moment with Kane also not in his best form, and the whole Spurs team looks exhaushed.

On the other hand Chealse looks excellent with Haz playing maybe best football of his life.

Haz gets extra point for goal, CS and is a BPS magnet. If Haz scores one goal he'll probably end up on 10/11 points while even if Kane gets brace he'll be on 13 points.

Yes, Kane can score 3-4 goals on his day but is it worthed to wait for that day week after week...

I'm starting to question his fitness tbh. His form is down, Alder is out and Spurs look a bit jaded. I've talked myself out of capping Salah the last 2 weeks for Kane, and it was a disaster!

Haz cap with Salah vice next week

my reason: i don't have Hazard

Haz is firing atm, but we know from the past he can equally have patches where he does nothing for 8 weeks, in between bouts of points frenzy

      1. @persecuted_by_mods

New position, strike partner that is mobile and good at assisting and intricate play, penalties = get hazard

Free roaming Haz is the best Haz. Especially when he's positioned as a striker too.

Captaining mids is always a better option too. CS points and someone like Haz who's on the ball so much when he's roaming is gold. Kane needs a brace to haul baps

yep fair point, tbh just not sure how to fit him in my team, who to lose from a team that i'm quite happy with, definitely keeping Kane though, i think him and Morata the only big strikers worth having atm

Yes, those patches where he does nothing for weeks after getting a huge score are well known...but i feel that this is a different Hazard. He significally increased numbers of shoots per game and his new n.10 role looks amazing

And if Hazard gets 3 assists he'll only be on 14 points compared to Kane getting 13 for a Brace. It's more complicated than this because of the probabilities of these happening, but it's so easy to justify our decisions post-hoc. If you spent the next hour reading reasons why Kane is the best choice, you would probably change your mind 😀

i'd like to have both in an ideal world, maybe i should do alonso/sane out (have sterling and azpi) , haz + affordable defender in?

              Sane+Alonso >> Hazard + 4.5ish defender, that's the move I'm looking at as well.

The only problem is that both combinations will score about the same in the long run!

Assuming you have 1FT I would consider getting Coutinho in for Sane. Otherwise selling Kane and upgrading Shaq (and leaving money in the bank for next week). Otherwise save

Shaqiri has been the only good buy of my season! That is the big debate - Sell Kane or keep. If I sell I could afford Haz and Cout in the mid.

I would save, mainly because I'm not sure who you would downgrade to fund Sane -> Hazard.
