The Community Round Up

The Chelsea and Aston Villa double Gameweek 1 proved to be this week’s biggest news as the community was deafened with the sound of ripped-up draft teams. We take a look back at the subsequent discussions and the other hot topics to catch our eye in the past seven days, and keep up to date with the latest from the community leagues taking place this summer.

Hottest Topics

Chelsea looks to the main source of investment for community members during this early double Gameweek, with few keen on Aston Villa’s assets. Lateriser21 was on hand to come up with a solution for those looking to acquire a trio of Blues options, the game’s two most expensive players Gareth Bale and Robin Van Persie, and avoid an early wildcard. However, this task will become much easier should Bale’s rumoured move to Real Madrid become reality.

Among those urging caution before investing in Villa’s assets was Triggerlips. He warns that for every double Gameweek player we invest in, the likelihood of points hits grows as both Chelsea and Villa are set to miss Gameweek 3.

Thinking of picking up a West Brom player? Maybe you will reconsider after reading Dino’s critical assessment of their chances. It proves grim reading for Baggies fans and those considering Nicolas Anelka as a cut-price striker option.

Second season syndrome was the inspiration behind this detailed post from Demi, who has analysed those players who may be primed for a far better second season in the Premier League. A certain Aston Villa striker is amongst those he suggests could have an impressive 2013/14 – perhaps investment in the midlanders’ attacking assets for the double Gameweek may not be a bad idea after all.

Meanwhile, Gimli Son of Gloin has taken an epic trek through the main captaincy options to help those looking at heavy hitters over the first few weeks. SW6’s Home and Away analysis was another post to catch our eye, especially his look at West Ham’s shockingly poor away form.

Finally, Camzy was on hand to wrap up some other key decisions that have been vexing the community over the last week, such as Anelka versus Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez as a cheap striker option. Whether to invest in Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet and a non-playing goalkeeper, as opposed to picking up two rotating keepers, was another key question analysed in this post.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for midfielders over the week. Man City, owned by Messimerized, went on quite a shopping as they acquired the duo of David Silva and Javier Martinez. Meanwhile Fulham, under PeppieandFelix, still lead the game, with Norwich, led by The Shadow, and 4vets’ Liverpool inching closer to the lead. The deadline for submission of bids on strikers is Saturday 23.59 hrs BST. Anyone interested can still sign up here.

Meanwhile, FFS UEFA’s leagues returns for another instalment this coming season. Click here to sign up.

  1. Di Canio's attacking full back strategy

Interesting quotes here from Di Canio about the roles of fullbacks this season for Sunderland...

    "...
And the Sunderland head coach says that playing at full-back will involve a far more attacking remit under the blueprint for his new-look side.

“Now we’re playing in a different way, he’s started to understand that as a left-back he becomes like a winger,” added Di Canio.

“With the system we’re going to use this year, both full-backs often during the game will become wingers...
    "

now at present this doesn't mean much as the two current full backs are both listed as midfielders anyway--Colback and Gardner...but with Sunderland currently in the market for two full backs these quotes could become more interesting especially should they be added as 4.5 defenders like most of the other Sunderland defense.

Yeah Di Canio loves his overlapping full backs.

Conversly, expect the wingers to be somewhat restrained as they need to do their share of defending too.

Im struggling here guys. Looks good on paper but its never that straight forward is it.

    De Gea

    Mertesacker / Vidic / Luiz

    Lampard / YaYa / Wilshere / Snodgrass

    Aguero / Benteke / Lukaku

SUBS: Vorm / Shaw / Garrido / Barkley

      Any cash left?
I like it but ai'd have Mignolet before De Gea.
Lampard and Yaya look overpriced to me, Lampard cos other players are more guaranteed to play and Yaya cos theres more offensive players for the money or 0.5 more.

Front line should do well i think, assuming Aguero is first choice that is, I dont know how things are shaping up in that City frontline...

No cash. Thanks for a response pal.

Ive tried to go with the old guard a bit. Not hugely familiar with the new gen of foreign imports. Jovetic / Paulinho etc etc. Lukaku is a doubt for me, I think Aguero is more likely to play than ROmelu to be honest. Just cos it torres hes up against.

Yaya is a BP magnet and 1st choice on my sheet. Lampard is a differential with so many on the Hazard / Mata vibe. Coutinho & Michu look good but 9m is steep.

The key as ever is balance and a good first GW to get the ball rolling.

I reckon Lukaku will start once Rooney doesnt arrive, Mourinho likes big powerful centre forwards and Lukaku is gold anyway. Torres is not even close to what he was although I was never really conviced by him tbh.
I see your reasoning for everything but if Lampard aunt first choice its hard to see where the goals will come from in midfield.
its defo a refreshing team tho, avoiding the bandwagons!

Last year this was the case but, a sample size of 'one' season isn't enough to draw a conclusion, is it?

I mean, perhaps two years ago all the top players coupled it with the Jan WC...

Who knows; is there a way we can look back to see if there's an actual trend of when the Top 1000 players use their WC?

    The3rdTurd
    • 13 Years
    10 years, 9 months ago

Warning: long and stat-filled post below about the new bonus system. If either of those things bother you, here’s the short version:

    • I’ve recalculated how the actual FPL baps would have been allocated for each individual fixture in the 2011/12 season.
    • Graphical results in three separate places:
    http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/FPLbonuspointsystemcomparison201112/Gainlossinbaps?:embed=y
    http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/FPLBonuspointbreakdown201112season/bonusindexbreakdownbyplayer201112season?:embed=y
    http://i.imgur.com/tq3iCxH.png?1
    • Goalkeepers come out of it pretty well. 4 of the top 7 gainers in actual terms were goalkeepers, with Krul leading the way with a gain of 17 bonus points.
    • Defenders do poorly. 8 of the top 10 losers were defenders, with Collins losing 12 points and Glen Johnson losing 11 points.
    • Mids and forwards were more of a mixed bag although overall they did a bit better and the few defensive mids I picked out definitely seem to do a bit better. To pick out 2 extremes, Joe Allen gained 14 points and Walcott lost 10 points.
    • The top three ranked players in each game on average scored 14.5, 11.1 and 9.1 points under the new bonus system
    • The biggest contributing factors to the bonus index are (in descending order) playing time, pass completion, key passes and goals.
    • Crosses, errors leading to goals or attempts, offsides, tackles lost, winning goals and shots off target all have a fairly negligible effect, and fouls conceded has a moderately large negative effect.

    The long version:

Most of the statistical analysis I have seen of the new bonus system has tended to focus on how the overall PPI index scores over the season match up against the overall bonus point system scores over the season as a whole, as published on the FPL site. This process obviously has its flaws given how the actual bonus points are allocated within each fixture rather than based on an aggregate index over the season.

However I have worked out a way of recalculating how the bonus points would have been allocated in the 2011/12 season for each individual fixture, which should give a more accurate insight into how the new bonus system will work in the forthcoming season.

I’ve done this using the Opta stats for the 2011/12 season made publicly available under the Opta/MCFC Analytics project about a year ago. This dataset has very detailed stats for each of the 539 players who got game time in all 380 matches that season. Crucially, it includes virtually all the stats which form part of the new bonus point system, which has made it a relatively simple process to recalculate the bonus points allocated in each game.

I say ‘virtually all’ because annoying the stats for big chances are not included in this dataset. Under the new system a player is allocated 1 bonus score for creating a big chance and loses 1 bonus score for missing a big chance. This means my recalculated baps won’t be 100% accurate, but since big chances form a small part of the overall recipe under the new system (2 stats out of 28), I think my figures will still be reasonably accurate. To put this error in context, there are on average around 1.5 big chances per game, of which around half lead to a goal.

There are a couple of other limitations: firstly I would have preferred to do this exercise on the 2012/13 data, but the MCFC Analytics project has only provided data for the 2011/12 season.

Secondly, many of the players who accrued playing time in 2011/12 are no longer playing in the Premier League and are therefore no longer in the FPL database. What this means is that for these players I can calculate their 2011/12 baps under the new bonus system, but I can’t compare them against their actual 2011/12 baps because these are no longer available to us. This is obviously no good to me as it’s the comparison between recalculated baps and actual baps that provides the real insight. However my reduced dataset still extends to 240 players where I have a valid comparison, out of the 539 total players which is a hit rate of 45%.

This also means I don’t have figures for players like Cazorla and Vertonghen who didn’t play in the Premier League in 2011/12.

I’ve converted the results into a Tableau viz which can be found here: http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/FPLbonuspointsystemcomparison201112/Gainlossinbaps?:embed=y&:display_count=no and a chart which can be found here: http://i.imgur.com/tq3iCxH.png?1

The data can be filtered using the checkboxes on the right hand side. The first tab shows the +/- bonus points gained or lost comparing the old system to the new (a positive figure means they do better under the new bonus system). The second tab shows absolute bonus points earned for each player under the old and new systems and the third tab shows the total new bonus index scores for each player for 2011/12 compared to 2012/13.

In a separate viz I have done an analysis which shows how each player’s total bonus index score over the season breaks down into the contributing factors. This is interesting as it shows firstly which of the stats contribute more towards the overall bonus index scores and which stats are less relevant, and secondly how this changes based on position and player: http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/FPLBonuspointbreakdown201112season/bonusindexbreakdownbyplayer201112season?:embed=y

That’s enough from me, sorry for the length. See bullet points above for some key findings I’ve unearthed, but I’d encourage people to play around with the visualisations and would welcome any insights you can see in the data.

      Krul +17
      Vorm +15

Swansea, Newcastle rotation was golddust back then. Fulham, Liverpool and Sunderland were also big guns then. So it would appear that just go for CS's + saves with your keepers and they should roll in baps too.

Migs at pool will be the equivalent of Migs at pool. Swansea didnt have Lucas mopping up the ball and preventing opposition shots. Liverpool keepers really do have less to do.

The other thing for me is last season Liverpool either won dominantly 5-0 or lost horrifically 0-5. Neither of these cases is a 0-0 in which a keeper could thrive.

Reina would have had 13 extra bp in 2011/2012 ginks.

In 2011/2012 pool had 4 cs and 9 wins 2-0 or less (four 2-0), they also had six 1-1 results and he made no penalty save.

In 2012/2013 pool had 5 cs and 8 wins 2-0 or less (zero 2-0), they also had three 1-1 results and he made 1 penalty save.

In conclusion last season I would estimate reina could have got 13-15 bonus extra under the new system.

While juusi or bego might have got a few more each I don't think we would have benefited from them all due to three of stokes 12cs (to 2-0 or less) coming v arsenal home, liverpool away and spurs away and three of wham 10cs to 2-0 or less came in city home, pool home, toon away. If you missed all of those you might have missed out on 18 of the extra accumulated bps of bego nd juusi rotating.

              Anyone any thoughts?

In 2010-11 Liverpool had 14 CSs (including three 2-0 wins, four 1-0 wins and one 0-0 draw), and four 1-1 draws.
In 2012-13 they had 15 CSs (including no 2-0 wins, two 1-0 wins and five 0-0 draws) and three 1-1 draws.
So if Reina got 1 BP for each 2-0, 1-0, 0-0 or 1-1 result then he would have got 13 BPs in 2010-11 but only 10 (plus extra for the penalty save) in 2012-13.

Sorry, looking at the wrong year.
In 2011-12, Liverpool had 11 CSs (including four 2-0 wins, one 1-0 win and four 0-0 draws) and five 1-1 draws.
So Reina would have got 14 BPs in 2011-12.

Apologies Red my post above should have read four 0-0 results and five 0-0 results instead of 4cs and 5cs.

Going on the3rds graph reina would have actually been due an extra 13 in 11/12. I think the gk would be very unlikely to get bp in a 2-0 and based on the3rds comments beliw the 0-0 could be giving you 3bp for your gk so he would have done better last season than 11/12.

This is all moot however if the3rd has not picked up on bps for defenders for cs as per observation below by b&b

This is epic but I've got one slight problem with it. Wasn't the 11/12 FPL season was done by the man in the stand? For this reason we can't really compare the effect the change in Bonus system will be as there already has been a change. Mind you, I'm picking at a very small hole. Fantastic work!! I really like the bonus stat score breakdown. This can really be utilised.

      Cheers

      Epic stuff the3rd.

Am I right in thinking the big gainers are those who lost out through shots off target and the big losers are defenders who did well from blocks and clearances as well as all players that are not likely to get 90mins and players with poor crossing accuracy?

That's probably fair. Certainly shots off target seemed to be penalised disproportionately highly under PPI, whereas under the new system it's only minus one point for each 3 shots off target.

Likewise Applebonkers always used to moan about how blocks were rewarded too much under the PPI system and it looks like they've scaled that back now.

Time to search members are for strikers and attacking mids with most shots per 90mins last season so for the biggest winners.

Don't see much positive for non scoring defenders here except maybe those good for interceptions and good distribution maybe? What do you think on defenders?

If you have all this data, is it easy to compare baps against final result for each position of player? aka do keepers tend to get baps in 0-0's only?

Could you say in what kind of games Vorm & Krul would have got more baps? Some examples if possible.

Sure, so I've filtered by spreadsheet on Vorm, and to give one example he picked up all 3 bonus points against Liverpool on 5 November 2011. This was a goalless draw and according to Sky Sports he was their man of the match:

        http://www1.skysports.com/football/live/match/237982/report

Read the match report and it says he made save after save. Looking at my stats, he made 2 clearances, 25 recoveries and 5 saves. His total bonus point score was just 8, which was very low for a player taking away the maximum baps (as I said in my post, the average score for the number 1 ranked player in a game was 14.5, and 8 would normally not even be enough to get 1 bonus point).

His 8 points were made up of 2 for playing, 4 for the clean sheet, 1 for recoveries and just 1 for saves.

Vorm also picked up maximum bonus points on 17 December 2011 against Newcastle. This was another goalless draw (I'm seeing a trend here...)

          http://www1.skysports.com/football/live/match/238032/report

His bonus point score was 9, made up of 2 for playing, 4 for the clean sheet, 1 for clearances, 1 for pass completion % and 1 for saves.

So another low scoring game meant a low scoring bonus index all round.

Krul would have picked up 3 bonus points against QPR on 12 September 2011. Guess what? the score was 0-0.

            http://www1.skysports.com/football/live/match/245404/report

This time his bonus score of just 7 was enough to take the maximum bonus. Given that just turning up, playing 90 and keeping a clean sheet gets you 6 points, it's not surprising that the maximum bonuses were shared with a few others - Ryan Taylor, Faurlin and Kenny also all scored 7.

            Thanks.
I guess we should find a goalkeeper from a boring low scoring/low conceding team this season. Real shame that Tony Pulis is gone 🙂
Maybe Ruddy should do well this season, at least bonus wise... 6 goalless draws, 10 clean sheets last season...
Not sure if these baps would be enough to outweigh the lack of cleanies in comparison to Mignolet though. Besides, 5 goalless draws for Liverpool last season...
I think I'll still go for Ming.

Agree with this (on both counts).

When I filter on Everton, only Howard has a blue BPI bar for clean sheets...

Looks like this will explain the points drop for defenders when the expectation is that defenders will benefit more from the new BAPs system?

With the scale and ambition of this work it is practically impossible to avoid some errors. Fantastic effort all the same.

OK, this *is* an error in my figures, based on a quirk in the underlying dataset: for some reason, the field for clean sheets is only populated for goalkeepers, all other players are showing a zero in this column.

Not a problem I thought, since I can use the 'goals conceded' column as a proxy for clean sheets by just tweaking my formula. However it turns out the 'goals conceded' field is also populated only for goalkeepers. I also thought about using (lack of) goals scored by opposing players in the same fixture, but this won't take into account playing time, e.g. when a defender does a Demel and is subbed off before his team concede.

Plan B is to merge the clean sheet data from the members area into my main dataset (I can add in the stats for big chances missed while I'm at it; big chances created doesn't appear in the members stats so I still won't be able to include that one).

This may take a while, firstly because some player names appear differently in the respective datasets and I need to manually make them consistent in order for the data merge to work; secondly because I need to run the members table once for each gameweek of the season. I'll then need to recrunch most of my numbers and update the Tableau viz's.

Even then I don't think it will correct the error 100% because I can only run the members table gameweek by gameweek, which means for DGWs I won't be able to split out the data for each game.

Nonetheless the end result should be a much improved analysis so it's probably worth doing.

Thanks for flagging up the error.

This analysis is perfectly doable with Member's Area data for the 2012/13 season.

If only it was possible to data dump better from there. But each and every stat required is there (including Big Chances stats).

The problem is only being able to select 10 elements per table, and then having to refresh for each GW, works out to copy pasting 1140 tables...

That's precisely why I went back to using the 2011/12 data. The source I had was all neatly laid out in a spreadsheet without having to do any tedious cutting, pasting and changing of filters in a web table.

In theory I could use the big chance data in the members area to fill in the gaps in my dataset, but this is still pretty tedious when I'm dealing with over 10,000 rows of data.

However, if you're offering to do this...

      Updated analysis here:

      http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/FPLbonussystemreview2011-12seasonversion2/Bonusindexscorebyplayer?:embed=y

Changes from the previous version: stats for clean sheets and goals conceded have been corrected for defenders and mids; big chances missed are now included, so of the 28 stats making up the new bonus system, only big chances created is missing due to a lack of availability of that particular stat.

Overall, the main contributing factors remain unchanged – playing time, pass completion, key passes and goals make up the biggest contributors in that order. At the other end of the scale, fouls conceded is the biggest negative factor followed by goals conceded.

However this presents a somewhat distorted view for two reasons. Firstly because it includes bonus point scores for all players, including those who have no hope of actually scoring bonus points, and secondly because playing time is something which all players on the pitch get points from, which means it’s not really a contributing factor it’s more of a required precondition for scoring baps.

I’ve therefore shown a separate tab which shows the bonus score breakdown by contributing statistic for only those players who scored baps in each game, and excluding bonus scores arising from playing time. This shows that goals scored is far and away the biggest factor, more than twice as important as the next biggest factor (key passes), with pass completion and clean sheets rounding out the top 4 factors (although this varies when you filter by the different positions).

On an individual basis, defenders do much better than in my original analysis – Assou-Ekotto, Rangel, Jagielka and Kompany would all have picked up at least 10 more baps if the new system had been in place, thanks to the inclusion of clean sheets.

Goalkeepers are much more of a mixed bag and fare a lot worse than my original analysis (not surprising since the error in my first version was that they earned clean sheet points where their fellow defenders didn’t). The best gainer was Reina with a gain of 5 baps; Krul would have picked up additional 4 baps and Cech would have lost 6.

Of the midfielders, Lampard, Mata, Adam and Dembele (to pick out some of the highest gainers) all would have done better under the new system. Surprisingly, Walcott would have lost 13 of his 19 baps. Looking at his breakdown, this seems to be due to poor pass completion percentages and recovered balls.

Do you think walcott might improve (or regress less) if big chances created was included?

It's certainly as close as I can get, unless someone can find a decent source of big chances created stats for 2011/12.

I can't say for sure if Walcott might have benefited from this. A quick google didn't reveal much, but I found a couple of snippets:

          Firstly here:

          http://espnfc.com/blog/_/name/tacticsandanalysis/id/1410?cc=5739

about half way down the page it lists the highest individual players for last season for big chances created. Cazorla appears in that list (with 15) but Walcott doesn't.

          Secondly here:

          http://www.7amkickoff.com/2013/suarez-was-both-the-most-clinical-finisher-in-the-league-and-the-most-wasteful/

where it says both Cazorla and Walcott exceeded 30 big chances created.

😕 Make of that what you can.

I thought about reposting this as a new item, but decided against as I don't want it to seem like I'm spamming the place with this analysis and I know there are quite a few people here who haven't the slightest interest in this sort of post. Being in the community article gave the original post quite a boost in upvotes, so I reckon/hope people will have seen this too.

Nah no way Barkley will replace Coleman or Mirallas, both outstanding players for Everton last season + fairly young and do a completely different job than Barkley. He is more likely to replace Osman who is 32 now. At 4.5M he could be worth a punt for a cheap mid.

How's this looking for a first draft?

    Mignolet
    Mert, Zabaleta, Walker
    Walcott, Hazard, Snoddy, Kagawa
    Benteke, Lukaku, Sturridge

Subs: 4.0 goalie, Collins, Shaw, Britton

Should I have RVP or Bale? (obviously waiting on Bale situation)

It's a good start but a few issues.

      - Zabaleta may have competition for City's RB slot with Richards back.
      - Walker isn't worth the 6.0m imo, and with Spurs current centre back situation, I don't see them picking up too many CS's from the start.
      - Kagawa's prospects rely heavily on Rooney leaving Utd or not.
      - Sturridge hasn't played a single game in pre-season so as things stand, he's a doubt for GW1.
      - Also Britton is a very boring 4.5m player. I'd much rather take the risk with Thomas of Palace.

Britton is a waste of a midfield spot, I'd wait and see on Kagawa and Walker is too expensive in my opinion. If you want to spend that much on a defender Enrique is a better pick.

All in all a sturdy team though.

GW1 team with an early WC in mind (will need restructure to bring in RVP). I'm assuming Bale is leaving...

    Mig

    Baines Koscielny Luiz (4.0 4.0)

    Silva Hazard Coutinho Walcott

    JRod Lukaku Dzeko

(I'm on board the Dzekowagon, if it loses steam Berba instead)

Have people thought about what their likely Gw1 -> Gw2 transfer move is to be?

I've been concentrating so much on the first week, I haven't really though through the options, and now I'm a bit stuck. Thinking of losing Lukaku, I guess.

Losing a Chelsea defender will be popular before United.I can see Lukaku scoring at Old Trafford

I can't even see him playing....Mourinho has made plenty of noise about using experience in the bigger games when talking about Terry's and Lampards game time....i'm reading the same for Torres over Lukaku for that game ...possibly...

After Lukaku scored a hatrick in 45 minutes against united last year united will be shitting themselves, not a chance he doesn't get at least half an hour in this game.

Mou is making a lot of noise but most of it is meaningless.

Jeez Spurs have a host of quality mids costing from £7.5m (eg Dempsey, Lennon) through the likes of Siggy and Paulinho at £7m through to quality players like Dembele at £5.5m. So anyone any clue who the starting 4 might be if Bale goes?
