After opening their summer spending spree with the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal continued to strengthen for the season ahead by snapping up Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle. The right-back arrives on a long-term deal and hands the Gunners a replacement for Bacary Sagna, who left for champions Manchester City under freedom of contract:

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Arsene Wenger
revealed that the Frenchman was his main target to take over from the departed Sagna and underlined the new boy’s attacking potential as key:

“We are delighted to welcome Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal Football Club. He has shown he can perform at the highest level with his club sides and also for France. He is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I’m confident he will fit in very well with us. The obvious replacement for Sagna was Debuchy. He knows what to expect and that’s of course a huge advantage. Debuchy is very good going forward, is very quick in transition. He is sharp in his marking, good with interceptions and quick to go from defence to attack. You feel he always has the desire to go forward, so I believe he will be perfectly suited to our style in that aspect.”

The History

A product of the Lille youth academy in his native France, the 28-year-old made his debut back in the 2003/04 season. Over the course of a decade, Debuchy cemented his spot as a regular at right-back and played a total of 289 times across all competitions, with his threat down the flank serving up 18 goals and 16 assists. A habit for incurring the referee’s wrath was obvious back in Ligue 1, though; Debuchy receiving 57 yellow cards and was dismissed on five occasions before making his way to Newcastle in January 2013.

The Frenchman made 14 league appearances for the Magpies in his debut campaign but failed to deliver any attacking returns for Alan Pardew’s side. Last term, though, he stepped up in the final third and managed a goal and four assists in 29 league games – again, though, his disciplinary record was a cause for concern, with 12 yellows and a couple of dismissals in 46 matches across all competitions for the Tyneside team.

On the international stage, Debuchy has scored twice in 25 appearances for France and, as evidenced by the recent World Cup, has edged past Sagna as Didier Deschamps’ first-choice right-back.

The Prospects

The reported £12m deal certainly bodes well for Debuchy’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead. A look at the statistics shows that Wenger rarely rotated at right-back and centre-half – Sagna, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker appeared in the first XI on 32+ occasions – compared to the uncertainty on the left which saw Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal handed 24 and 13 starts respectively.

After serving up 17 clean sheets in 2013/14 (11 at home and six on the road), Wenger’s backline was second only to Chelsea (18) for shut-outs, conceding a mere 11 times in front of their own fans. Granted, their form on the road against title contenders (leaking 17 goals on their travels to Chelsea, Liverpool and City) may persuade us to bench their main assets for tougher trips but, having started the Fantasy games as a Newcastle player, Debuchy’s kinder price tag strengthens his appeal.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.1 in the Sky Sports game, the right-back is 0.5 cheaper than Mertesacker and Koscielny in the former game – persuading many to snap him up in the hope that Wenger’s side can replicate last year’s resilience.

It’s not just defensive potential that brings Debuchy onto our radars, though. In the season gone by, the Frenchman was third for shots (35) and attempts on target (12) amongst defenders despite starting only 28 matches, whilst a comparison with Sagna also reflects his promise; Debuchy produced an attempt on goal every 74.7 minutes to Sagna’s 201.3, whilst he was also quicker for creating chances by 113.6 minutes to 153.4.

Whilst showdowns against Everton, City, Spurs and Chelsea in the first seven Gameweeks hand Wenger’s side a mixed opening schedule, Debuchy’s points potential at both ends of the pitch could offset any lack of defensive returns and persuade many that he’s worth the early investment.

Some hard decisions need to be made.

Sanchez - in or out? Highest ownership and high price but worth it?
Hazard worth the extra £1m over Fabregas?
Giroud - will he start the early matches?
Erikson - at the centre of most things prediction - true or not?
RVP - got to start under new manager and better than Rooney surely?

Yes. Pens and maybe more attacking, wing play, BPS etc.

Similar comment out yesterday I think, to great success.
I would say Sanchez is a must.
Hazard might just be worth it, he's been the star.
Giroud should, not sure if he'll be in the goals, Sanchez can be selfish.
      Yes on Eriksen.

These are my thoughts on these decisions mate:

Not gonna start with Sanchez myself, I will give him a few weeks to settle in first and then assess whether he is worth it.

I have Hazard over Fabby, think he will play higher up, be more directly involved in attacks and could also be on PKs too.

Giroud should start the early matches I think- I think their early attacking line up will be :
      Cazorla---Ozil---Sanchez
      Giroud

Think Eriksen will play centrally yeah, and even if he dosent he will still be involved in spurs' attacks.

I have Rooney over Rvp curently, don't think Rvp will be 100% at the start, but I will have to see over the coming weeks how Utd. shape up and all the news on Rvp.

Hope I have been of some help! 🙂

Completely agree, although the only way I'm going without Sanchez is if I'm going with Hazard for his first 2 games vs promoted sides.

Do ya not remember the start Giroud had last year Doos? He's a donkey, in the same vein as Dzeko, but both of them will get goals in those teams, more so that they're in the right place at the lucky time.

      IMO

Im going to stick with tried and tested players from the start so I'll go with Ramsey/Ozil and monitor Sanchez over the first few weeks..Could cost me points but I think I'll risk it.

Hazard, for the same reason as above plus I'd imagine he's still on penos.

Gonna start with Giroud for the opening game then prob switch to Bony, Dzeko, Pelle for the next 2.

Eriksen was the first player I picked and the only player that I still have even after all the tinkering. Just strikes me as a Poch kinda player and I think he'll get the best out of him.

RVP will be top dog under LVG so he you have to start with him surely. If things dont go his way at least you have the money to downgrade to literally any other striker in the game. Who even knows how he'll utilise Rooney? In true LVG style he could throw a curve ball and start Januzai/Kagawa/Mata ahead of Rooney..Highly unlikely but who knows. RVP is the safest route.

Liking the team, I don't like Jelly at all, but in this team he can basically be your bench player most weeks anyway. Whether you're comfortable with a 6.0 bench player is another question. I wouldn't be.

Albrighton is good enough for me as my perma-bench

Every season he's been in the PL Dzeko's minutes player have increased. Yet ever damn season we get the same "not sure about his gametime" lark. Don't f**king buy him then, go for Giroud he played 1000 minutes more and managed a whole 2 assists more than Dzeko.

i'll be honest it doesn't check out that well. relies also on fixtures not being top of the table clashes and being ahead of negredo at the time. impossible to see negredo ahead of him given how they both performed in the 2nd half of last season.

think a lot of the theory is simply dzeko does well in away games, so much so you dont really notice home and away with him, almost the opposite of man city themselves

Hey guys, loving the articles on this site! they are great. I have signed up, and made a grav account so I should get a shiny little picture soon!

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, so if it isnt, please let me know where to repost!

I wondered if you kind folks would give me a little bit of a critique on my team.

In previous years I have gone for a top keeper, and a dud one for cheap points, this year I am thinking of trying to swap two based on home/away fixtures.

I am looking at something similar in defence (after reading the article on here) and although I don't know if I have chosen the best options, I am enjoying the challenge to choosing guys to swap with each other.

In midfield I have gone for Shurrle, I know he may not start, but its a heart over mind decision, and I just want to see him succeed, after such a great world cup, Mourinho has to give him a shot!
I have then gone for a mid priced midfield, so as to put money into strikers, and chosen a 3 mid priced with one bargain to rotate in.

Upfront I've gone for what I think to be a simple, this is who i think will be prolific.

    Comments and critique please!

    Krul, Mannone

    Debuchy, Demel+Ward, Cameron+Taylor

    Shurrle, Mirallas, Tadic, DeJong, Albrighton

    Costa, Sturridge, Rooney

Last but not least, who you pick as captain for this team?

      Hey Gazzamaniak, welcome aboard 🙂

This is indeed the best place to put your RMT (Rate My Team) post.

Krul/Mannone is a popular choice for rotation (although I quite like Krul/Foster personally, not quite as good home/away but fixture difficulty wise I quite like it)

Schurrle could be a great differential, worth having a plan B if he seems out of favour though.

Unusual to see such a top heavy team at this stage - everyone else seems to be piling the cash into midfield, I'm not going to tell you you're wrong though - the balance seems to shift quite frequently.

There'll be a captain's poll in the week leading up to kickoff which will help many decide, as it stands though I'd say Rooney from that bunch.

      Back 7 looks fine.

Midfield is poor, Shurrle definitely will not start most games - if he does then transfer him in at that point. Mirallas also not nailed on and poor fixtures. Tadic and De Jong unproven in the PL. You have no premium midfielders which makes it difficult to transfer them in if they go on a scoring spree. I think you need to downgrade Costa or Sturridge and have a play around with your midfielders.

Ok, great help so far guys. I completely see that my midfield is too weak, and not proven. here are my thoughts

Shurrle out, and if he becomes in favour with mourinho, I can bring him in. same with Costa, if he performs, I will bring him in.

So Costa out for Dzeko +2 million

Shurrle out for hazard? -2.5 million

I would like to keep dejong, so tadic and mirallas out for....?

14.5 to spend on 2 (not punty) midfielders

Sigurdsson if he moves back to Swansea looks great value at 6.0, maybe Eriksen to go alongside him? Those are popular choices round here.

There is no single team which would be the template but if you spend enough time here you see that people's teams are made up of broadly the same groups of players. Your team stood out a little mainly due to Schurrle and Mirallas, although Demel is a rarity too.

Best way to be is to soak up the advice but still make the final decisions yourself, sounds like that's the approach you're taking.

for sure thats where I am. but it has been a bit of a reality check about shurrle. he just has my heart you know.....I'm like a lovestruck teenager

*wake up you have exams to study for*

do you think demel is a bad rarity, and Im wondering, if cameron wont start, who would be a good replacement?

Nothing wrong with Demel, just not been a popular pick so far, people get distracted by perceived value elsewhere - he should be very solid.

Cameron is worth monitoring - if he looks likely to start (we'll have a better idea by the end of pre-season) he'll be in a lot of teams. Otherwise Huth is a good Stoke option (albeit 0.5m more)

          Eriksen and Sigurdsson/Arnautovic/Puncheon.

Its different, who knows, it could work! Plenty of goals from your forwards. Maybe one punt too many in midfield. Shurrle would be in everyones team if we knew his minutes, Mirallas hasn't appeared in many teams on here prob down to Evertons tough opening fixtures, Tadic, great fixtures but unproven in this league. De jong the same but fixtures arnt great either. God knows how Albrighton will be utilised.

Rooney, Mata and De Gea for me. Those fixtures are just too good.

RvP destroys the balance of the team too much.

RVP full season without any CL distractions seems too good to leave him out. With Rooney, have to wonder if LVG will bench him from time to time or rotate with Mata

I'm considering Costa for 2 GWs then swapping to Rooney for GW3

      But Sturridge in GW4

I'm shocked at the lack of Yaya love on here. 20 goals was ALOT last season... do we just not think he can replicate that?
I'm so unsold on him and Hazard I'm considering just going without and going for Silva or Nasri instead

this is the team who scored 100+ goals in a season. Fixtures mean nothing in this case IMO

He could well do, but people are right to be skeptical. May not take as many pens with Aguero on the pitch, and probably won't score as many free kicks as he did. Never got more than 6 goals in any other season http://i.imgur.com/fkjgcrw.png

yeah I was looking at the stats too Demi... hard to see him netting so frequently again. Maybe 11 is too much after all.

Dunno but appears to be a 'thing' on this site to not talk about Yaya - too painful for those that opted not to pick him last season until it was too late.

I really want to get Eriksen but when it's put like this, it's hard to justify getting him:

    Sigurdsson Debuchy Rafael Davies

    or

    Eriksen + 14m to get 3 defenders.

As says above, the money has gone in defence.

        Debuchy Rafael Davies = 16m

With Eriksen, i'd have 14m to spend on the three defenders.

    Yaya - Eriksen - Barkley - Siggy - Albrighton
RVP - Diego Costa - Remy

    Hows that look?
