634x258 Great Expectations

After breaking into the Liverpool first-team under Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13, hopes were high that Raheem Sterling would announce himself as a major contender for our Fantasy teams last season. The youngster’s fortunes suffered at the start of the campaign, though, and while Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge tore opposition back lines apart, Sterling fell down the pecking order – over the first 12 Gameweeks, he mustered just one start and six second-half sub appearances for the Merseysiders.

A tactical tweak from Rodgers brought the teenager back into the first-team frame. Sterling subsequently started 23 of the remaining 26 league outings and was drafted off the bench in the other three fixtures, underlining just how crucial he became as the Anfield outfit finished second behind champions Manchester City after scoring 101 goals.

Key Factors

    • This time around, there seems no doubt Sterling will have a significant part to play. With Suarez departing for Barcelona and Sturridge’s propensity for injuries already forcing him out action, the teenager has so far struck twice during the club’s tour of the US. A series of displays have already persuaded 23% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up the midfielder, with Rodgers enthusing after a recent game against United:

“I thought Sterling was outstanding, a real threat. The intensity in his game, how he presses the ball, and technically he’s very aware for a young player. When he runs at defenders he creates many opportunities. At 19 years of age he’s a young talent and getting better all the time.”

    • Rodgers’ tactical tinkering works in the youngster’s favour. Whether out wide in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or fielded at the tip of a midfield diamond, his versatility ensures he will rarely be kept out of the Reds’ starting XI. With an influx of new signings potentially taking their time to settle, Rodgers will look to the teenager to step up as a key performer from the outset.

    • Further analysis of Sterling’s stats from Gameweek 13 bodes very well. Having cemented his role in the first XI, he produced 106 touches in the box in the final 26 fixtures – third amongst midfielders – and was fourth for shots on target (21) and goals (nine) over that period amongst midfielders. Whilst Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Eden Hazard all scored more across that time frame, the trio relied heavily on penalties or set-pieces to boost their points potential – essentially, Sterling scored more goals from open play from Gameweek 13 onwards than any other midfielder in the league.

    • In spite of his tender years, Sterling has clearly developed over the last two seasons – particularly in front of goal. His shot accuracy of 26.5% in 2012/13 leapt to 48.9% last term, while he’s clearly far more clinical when face-to-face with the opposition keeper; after scoring just 5.9% of his efforts in his debut year, the Liverpool midfielder improved significantly and netted 20% of his efforts in 2013/14. With his successful dribble rate also on the up (from 40% to 59.2%) it’s clear that, as the years progress, he’s ever-improving his output under Rodgers’ guidance.

    • The afore-mentioned lack of game time in the opening few months has ensured Sterling remains out of the premium bracket for now. While a cost of 8.5 in FPL makes him the eleventh most expensive midfield option, that price tag could still provide us with excellent value – it’s possible that, with Suarez gone, Gerrard’s number of penalties will drop significantly and with just 0.5 difference between the pair, Sterling’s more advanced role could elevate him as the main man in the Merseysiders midfield. Bearing in mind all 13 of Gerrard’s goals in 2013/14 arrived from dead-ball situations (10 spot-kicks and three free-kicks), he’s clearly far more reliant on set-pieces.

While I'm here a quick question, if I may. What do we think Jordon Mutch will be priced when he's added to the game? 5.5m? 6m?

Got this this paragraph and then stopped:

"There is certainly a group of classic strikers still around: Karim Benzema, Falcao, Robert Lewandowski, Mario Mandzukic, Edinson Cavani, Gonzalo Higuain. But they're generally considered on the second rung, not quite among Europe's elite"

The only conclusion I can draw is that guy who wrote this clearly knows f**k all about football; is it worth continuing?

...and Mandzukic!? He's hardly even a striker!

But the most important thing is that 1) these are all very different players, if one is "classical striker", then most of the others arent. 2) they are not "second rung", ffs!!! For CF spot, they _are_ the Europe's elite! Show me a better CF than Lewandowski and I show you a Golden Ball winner.

But maybe it's just that what he meant: they're CF's, well, mostly, except for Cavani who has for a couple of seasons now played on flank. So, "classical strikers" in very unusual and wide meaning of "central forward". And then that the wide-playing (CR7, Neymar) or false9 (Messi, maybe Suarez?) forwards seam to score more goals these days? But if that's what he meant, he certainly chose a strange way to put it.

I think by 'elite' he means Messi, Neymar, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic and Suarez - but chucks RvP in there too.
There's no shame in being just shy of that lot. Doesn't mean they're rubbish - just not quite 'elite'.

    Two quick questions:

    1. Are you of the opinion that Southampton will have a decent season, particularly in defense? If so justify.

    2. Is Young now a viable option for the first few GW's (Valencia may be injured for start of season which will do no harm to Young's game-time)?

      1. No. There has been squad disruption from the sales and, even if players are replaced and money is well spent, this will be a season of adjustment.
      2. Definitely. I think he' proven himself in pre-season. No one can predict the exact line up, but you just have to go with your gut. He's my 5th midfielder.

Young is also my 5th mid and will rotate with Siggy.

      1) Yes, in time. Wanyama is a good influence and great to have back shielding the back four, Lovren and Shaw are no doubt losses but neither of them are irreplaceable, Lovren is good but that's it and Shaw is good and has potential but is nothing phenomenal. So, I think if they sign a replacement or two they should be relatively okay. Signed Forster as well which will create big competition for the GK place forcing them to bring their best game. Going forward, Pelle and Tadic are good replacements for Lambert and Lallana, may take some time to adjust but should work out okay.

      2) Yes, unless they sign someone but he's had a good preseason. Should be relatively okay as it stands.

Surely Caulker is an every week player as well?

I'm worried about QPR defensively, but Caulker should get a few goals over the season.

Can't afford Caulker and Ward 🙁

None yet ILF. Just speculation from newspapers.

I doubt we'll really find out, it's not so much that LVG is telling a set list they will leave, more that he's telling them how much gametime they will get at United and, if they are unhappy with that, they can look to sort something out with another club.

I think it'll be a balancing act between which we want to get rid of and which players are attracting interest

For example I think LVG would keep Hernandez but if we are getting offers of 15m+ then he'll seel because we need to cut down the squad size.

Favourites to go must be Fellaini, Kagawa & Nani
Young & Cleverley look like they've earned a bit of time to show what they can do

Had the same issue. I currently have Young as my 5th mid, but could instead upgrade a 4.5 def to a 5.5. Opted for Young, I think there are enough 4.5 defs to have a rotating three and Young is too tempting at that price, he can rotate with Siggy if he plays.
