Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Raheem Sterling

After breaking into the Liverpool first-team under Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13, hopes were high that Raheem Sterling would announce himself as a major contender for our Fantasy teams last season. The youngster’s fortunes suffered at the start of the campaign, though, and while Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge tore opposition back lines apart, Sterling fell down the pecking order – over the first 12 Gameweeks, he mustered just one start and six second-half sub appearances for the Merseysiders.

A tactical tweak from Rodgers brought the teenager back into the first-team frame. Sterling subsequently started 23 of the remaining 26 league outings and was drafted off the bench in the other three fixtures, underlining just how crucial he became as the Anfield outfit finished second behind champions Manchester City after scoring 101 goals.

Key Factors

    • This time around, there seems no doubt Sterling will have a significant part to play. With Suarez departing for Barcelona and Sturridge’s propensity for injuries already forcing him out action, the teenager has so far struck twice during the club’s tour of the US. A series of displays have already persuaded 23% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up the midfielder, with Rodgers enthusing after a recent game against United:

“I thought Sterling was outstanding, a real threat. The intensity in his game, how he presses the ball, and technically he’s very aware for a young player. When he runs at defenders he creates many opportunities. At 19 years of age he’s a young talent and getting better all the time.”

    • Rodgers’ tactical tinkering works in the youngster’s favour. Whether out wide in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or fielded at the tip of a midfield diamond, his versatility ensures he will rarely be kept out of the Reds’ starting XI. With an influx of new signings potentially taking their time to settle, Rodgers will look to the teenager to step up as a key performer from the outset.

    • Further analysis of Sterling’s stats from Gameweek 13 bodes very well. Having cemented his role in the first XI, he produced 106 touches in the box in the final 26 fixtures – third amongst midfielders – and was fourth for shots on target (21) and goals (nine) over that period amongst midfielders. Whilst Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Eden Hazard all scored more across that time frame, the trio relied heavily on penalties or set-pieces to boost their points potential – essentially, Sterling scored more goals from open play from Gameweek 13 onwards than any other midfielder in the league.

    • In spite of his tender years, Sterling has clearly developed over the last two seasons – particularly in front of goal. His shot accuracy of 26.5% in 2012/13 leapt to 48.9% last term, while he’s clearly far more clinical when face-to-face with the opposition keeper; after scoring just 5.9% of his efforts in his debut year, the Liverpool midfielder improved significantly and netted 20% of his efforts in 2013/14. With his successful dribble rate also on the up (from 40% to 59.2%) it’s clear that, as the years progress, he’s ever-improving his output under Rodgers’ guidance.

    • The afore-mentioned lack of game time in the opening few months has ensured Sterling remains out of the premium bracket for now. While a cost of 8.5 in FPL makes him the eleventh most expensive midfield option, that price tag could still provide us with excellent value – it’s possible that, with Suarez gone, Gerrard’s number of penalties will drop significantly and with just 0.5 difference between the pair, Sterling’s more advanced role could elevate him as the main man in the Merseysiders midfield. Bearing in mind all 13 of Gerrard’s goals in 2013/14 arrived from dead-ball situations (10 spot-kicks and three free-kicks), he’s clearly far more reliant on set-pieces.

Currently have a front 8 of

    Ramsey, Mata, Lamela, Siggy, Henderson
    Bojan, Rooney, Costa

I have 3.5m ITB after some defensive tinkering, where would you invest this?

My initial gameplan was a 3-way rotation for two spots between Siggy, Henderson and Bojan, but perhaps with the extra money, downgrading Henderson/Siggy to Albrington and upgrading Lamela and Bojan with the 5m would be a better plan.

I had gotten used to mentally filtering the RMTs out, and then allowing a few of them through the filters if there were a bunch of comments on them, but now there's none.

Some RMTs cause great discussion, but most just create noise around here, I can see why some would want them removed but I don't think this is a perfect solution.

I guess I'm just sceptical about how many RMT posts will be answered throughout the year, I can't see many of the regular posters that don't post RMTs go over to that article just to help out any newcomers who still have Crouch and Torres in their team 😛

Good improvement for the time being though and god knows I wouldn't be able to come up with any better 😀

Currently have Taylor/Cameron and Coloccini/vAanholt rotating. But question marks over Cameron's game time as well as CS capabilities of Sunderland and Newcastle.

Are there any other 4.5/4.5 rotating pairs that are more nailed on and defensively sound that I'm not seeing?

I have pretty much the same rotating combos as you (though I am punting on the 4.0mil Swans DFer). I think Cameron will keep the right back spot. He's the better player no doubts, and some weeks we might see him in CM which will be nice.

As for Newc & Sun, it's not ideal, but I can't find many better. The only option that looks better on paper is Mariappa/Rio, but they both arent exactly nailed on and we're already taking a risk with Cameron. So I'm sticking with the Sun/Newc combo as there is a chance that some weeks Cameron will be a no show (and for me my Swans guy too). So I'm liking that I'll definitely have DFers to fill in for them

Rio is nailed on in as far as his fitness will allow.

He's been on a special training program for years, and will not be able to play 2 games in a week. He's been like that for ages now. So I'd be careful over choosing him

The Sun claim Swansea will move for £6m-rated Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk once Chico Flores is sold. Probably rules out Bartley as a viable 4.0m option then.

Zidane is the greatest of all time. Lamps and Gerrard as CM but nowhere near good enough to be compared with the greatest, especially stevie

Hard to say with CM being such a varied position though. Tardelli exceptional at what he did

Xavi's trophy cabinet sways many but not me. You have to give more weight to individual skills that trophies. Remember he was on noone's of best midfielders pre 2008 and he had been around for quite a while. He was brilliant from Euro 2008 to maybe the end of 2010 season thats all. Then there was a monumental decline. I wouldn't put someone who had 2 great years on my all time list just because he won so much.

        Viera
        Zidane
        Ballack
        Lamps
        Gerrard
        Scholes
        Pirlo
        Mathaus

are all way above Xavi imo

My tinkerings over 2 weeks has yielded this team , I think I will kick serious a*s this season!

    Lloris (4m gk)
    Debuchy P.Jones, Bardsley(Duff, Wisdom)
    Ramsey, Sanchez, Hazard, Siggy, Lamela
    Rooney , Jovetic (Zamora)

Should I worry abt Jovetic's game time?
If yes, what do you think abt a punt on soldado revival under pochetino ?

    Thanks!

I like that team a lot. I prefer De Gea over Lloris because of the first 7 fixtures for Man U.

I would worry about Jovetic playing time. His status is too unnerving for me.

Thanks for the reply, basically I am banking on serious improvement defensively under pochetino , but just can't guess the first choice defence, vertonghen is injury prone .

Now that I have mentioned it, I realized Belgian centre back to be fragile.

Don't like your strikeforce. I would downgrade sanchez to Ramsey and put Jovetic to Lukaku

        Do you like Soldado?

    Option A or B

    A) Sanchez, A Young, Sigurdsson, Bojan (rotate 3-5-2 and 3-4-3)

    B) Ramsey, Jovetic, Sigurdsson, 4.5 mid (stick with 3-4-3)

Why Fabricio Coloccini's place in the Newcastle United defence should not be guaranteed

    http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/lee-ryder-fabricio-coloccinis-place-7572813

Fabricio Coloccini will start the season in the heart of Newcastle United’s back four.
But the Argentine is just as vulnerable - or should be - in terms of being dropped if things don’t go to plan in the opening few games of the season.

New to Twitter and I have a quick question: If you add someone to a private list can they see that you've put them on it?
