Our Watchlist rankings, which offer player recommendations over the next four to six Gameweeks, have been updated over the last 24 hours. Southampton continue to climb in our estimations, offering Fantasy managers the perfect combination of form and fixtures, whilst a number of budget back-lines come into contention as the premium defences continue to let us down.

Vito Mannone, Tom Heaton and Kasper Schmeichel all rise as budget keepers in this week’s refresh. Sunderland and Leicester have managed just one shut-out apiece but have the fixtures to improve that lack of resilience, with Mannone’s 10-point display against Burnley last weekend underlining his save and bonus point potential; indeed, in spite of keeping his opponents out just once so far, the Black Cats’ number one sits just six points off the summit for stoppers. In the main, though, budget back-lines looks the way to go for the coming month, as the likes of David de Gea and Simon Mignolet drop as confidence in the heavy-hitting defences declines.

In defence, Patrick van Aanholt and Callum Chambers are our choice of the 4.5-priced assets, while Ryan Bertrand retains his spot ahead of Nathaniel Clyne as a slightly cheaper route into the league’s most resilient defence, with the Saints set for four home clashes (QPR, SUN, STO, LEI) in the next six.

Both Kieran Trippier and Wes Morgan enjoy climbs – there are of course, cheaper options in their respective defences, i.e. Michael Duff and Liam Moore – but the former pair offers greater attacking potential. Andre Wisdom is also back on the radar – Joleon Lescott’s installation to the West Brom XI looks to have steadied the ship ahead of three strong home fixtures (BUR, CPL, NEW) in the next six.

The attacking output of Branislav Ivanovic and Leighton Baines keeps them in the top three, whilst Man City’s Vincent Kompany is beginning to figure as their fixtures brighten – he remains the only real assured asset in their rearguard.

Further up the pitch, Dusan Tadic climbs up to second spot amongst midfielders. Southampton’s aforementioned fixtures hand him plenty of opportunities to improve upon a record of two assists so far, whilst James Ward-Prowse’s foot injury absence means the Serbian is likely to dominate dead-ball duties. Furthermore, Tadic also looks set to be the Saints’ number one spot-kick taker, as evidenced by last night’s win at Arsenal.

Angel di Maria’s form is difficult to ignore as he rises up the rankings, though Aaron Ramsey is faltering somewhat, with Alexis Sanchez’ three goals in his last four appearances meaning the Chilean is now pushing hard as the weapon of choice for Arsenal – there’s a slight concern on pitch time but that’s likely to be extinguished. Stewart Downing is one to watch in the mid-price bracket given his new central role for the Hammers, while City’s David Silva also rises as the fixtures soften up for the champions.

Up front, Graziano Pelle is the big climber. The Saints’ fixtures are too good to overlook, and with three goals and an assist in the last three Gameweeks, the Italian is the form attacker for Koeman’s outfit.

Five goals in as many matches ensures Leonardo Ulloa also takes a significant move up the rankings. Leicester’s target man almost sneaks in above Sergio Aguero in our top three but it’s clear that a combination of Pelle and Ulloa with a heavy-hitter such as Chelsea’s Diego Costa looks a viable tactic in order to free up funds in midfield.

A move to “the hole” behind a front two sees Wayne Rooney falter. The United skipper is very close to being replaced by Radamel Falcao in our Watchlist now – we’ll be monitoring him at home to West Ham, but if Rooney remains in a more withdrawn berth, it seems likely we’ll be swapping targets here.

There are few consistent performers below that to tempt us, though Danny Welbeck’s goal and assist last weekend bodes well for his points potential as Arsenal’s schedule lightens considerably from Gameweek 8 onwards. We’re keeping an eye on budget-friendly options such as Saido Berahino, Mame Biram Diouf, Connor Wickham and Diafra Sakho for their ability to provide alternatives in the lower price-bracket, though in all honesty, they face a tough task to improve upon Ulloa’s record as the budget striker of choice.

    Rooney vs. Falcao:

    Rooney:
    Pro's:
-(c) - guaranteed game time, probably 90mins most weeks
-on some corners + on pennas if RvP subbed off
    -Great FPL record
-Involved in most Man U do

    Cons:
-VDG prefers him behind the strikers - so likely to play deeper. No room for him in the box!
    -swings in form
-majority of corners/FKs/pennas taken by others

    Falcao:
    Pros:
-Has scored a lot of goals wherever he's been
-Would think he'd start given what UTD have paid + VDG comments
    -Plays up front/in the box

    Cons:
-Will rotate a bit with Mata/RvP. Lots of 70min subs
    -No FPL experience
    -is more expensive

I can swap Rooney out for Falcao for free. Just no idea whether i should or not.

If you have Roo than keep.

I have balo who I might swap for falcao tho 🙂

Out of the two falcao is better but not worth the upgrade from Roo

I think Di Maria is the only attacking player for ManU to have. Rooney is a link player. Mata will be on the bench. And RVP and Falcao will rotate as well as earlier exits from games at the 60-70 min marks.

Sorry - have not read it , yet
I have been thinking Rooney to Falcao for a while , but MU fixtures turn soon and Aguero , if he stays fit, looks a lot better ?

There is of course the CL factor . So best to sit back and wait

Wait one more week and see. If Rooney plays deep and is not getting enough touches in penalty area, then 70 minutes of tiger force is preferred.

Anyways, you can perhaps get more value up front and use Man United midfielders. For short term, then change back after X gameweeks (probably 5-10).

I love Balo, but I do get frustrated with him because he isn't as motivated as he should be. I like all 3 of those options. Still not entirely sold on Falcao, seems like ADM is the MU attacker to own at the moment. I think Welbz will be solid: Pro = more money for you to spend on mid/def, Con = risk of not having enough firepower up top. I have Aguero in my squad and worried about his constant injury issues. Sounds like he is GTG for the weekend.

After all that typing, my vote is to bring in Aguero if you can afford it.

So Man U back four could be.....

    Rafael - Rojo - one of Blind/McNair/Thorpe - Shaw

Thorpe and McNair have yet to be added to the game as of yet.

That backline screams West Ham goal. Shaw back from injury, Rafael who can't defend, Rojo not convincing, plus a child...or Blind, in which case they have lost their best defensive midfielder.

I know LVG is not a man to admit to mistakes but it is pretty plain that with his centre backs injury problems at least two senior centre backs were a priority in the transfer window. He'll surely look back at that and think that was a major blunder.

Hindsight and all that. 4 options plus a handful of youngsters what were the chances of 3 getting injured along with Blackett's red card last week

          • 12 Years
          11 years, 2 months ago

this. if it was 3-5-2, I'd agree. But he has four senior CBs to fit two spots - Jones, Evans, Rojo and Smalling.. plus Blackett as a promising youngster. Very similar situation to City and Chelsea, really.

Difference is City's aren't known to be injury prone, although it is unfortunate that all three of Evans, Smalling and Jones are injured at the same stage.

Its a combination of injury record and lack of numbers. ManC and Chelsea's defenders are far more injury free.

Very high if you look at Smalling, Jones and Evans injury record. If any team needed to invest more in centre backs it was ManU, people were saying that during the summer. Last season they were injured alot, but they also had Vidic and Ferdinand to fill in. That was weak enough, but by replacing Vidic and Ferdinand with just Rojo they always left themselves open to this situation.

What was he supposed to do if he was unable, for whatever reason, to buy his defensive targets? Not buy the forwards and midfielders?

People can call it a blunder or an oversight, but in reality, if the defenders he'd identified never became available at any price, what were his options?

        1. Lucy.

You get someone in with experience, even if they're not 'the one'. Someone like Ron Vlaar for example. Had a solid world cup, 29 with a year left on his contract. He'd have done a job until he could get his targets in.

It wouldn't have stopped him chasing ADM/Falcao etc.

          1. Lucy.

Or someone like Alderweireld on loan. Solid enough.

We really wanted Rojo and didn't get him but that didn't stop Koeman finding alternatives because we needed some experience at CB.

And how much do you think Vlaar would have cost? I'd say, due to his World Cup and the desperate straits Utd found themselves in, upwards of £20m. For someone Utd don't really want. I'm not sure that would have been seen as great business either.

            1. Lucy.

He'd just been one of the best defenders at the World Cup, everyone and his/her dog knew Utd are desperate. He wouldn't have been cheap.

The rumoured fees weren't anywhere near that much because Saints pursued him - very much to Lambert's distaste - and there's no way we'd have spent anywhere near £20m. I heard £8m from several sources of varying reliability. Moreover, United would have had the reputation which might have encouraged Vlaar to force a move (as much as I hate that kinda behaviour).

£8m for him to go to Southampton? That sounds about right, although I'd guess a little more, perhaps £10m.

United's desperation for signings is akin to knowing City are minted. It'll always drive up the price.

He had 3 CB options, 4 if you count Blackett. He signed a CB they have no european football this season and were already out of the carling cup so why have a squad full of CB's on silly wages. Its just purely bad luck... if he could have sold a few of them before the window shut and got replacements in then thats a different issue altogether

I agree with your second point, the first not so much. It wasn't that they weren't available, all of the best players are under contract and if their team doesn't want to sell, you're stymied.

He's trying to bring in world class players. Something that isn't very easy for a team with no Champs League. Hence the silly wages.

Like how Baines is third on the watch list when he has Liverpool and ManU coming up. Those games will be goalfests. And I don't care if he on on set pieces and penalties. I see Liverpool and ManU scoring at least 3 goals in each game against the porous Everton defense.

Don't think it's worth 7.2 to bring him in knowing he'll probably only score 3-4 more goals this season. If you want CFC def, then get Cahill or JT. I'm sticking with JT as I feel he is due a header soon and a cleanie.

How often do yous take risks with your captaincy ? . I think Costa vs Aguero could go either way. However because Costa is owned by 60 % of the game , most active players own him and I'd say at least 40 % will captain him . Would be in my best interests to protect my rank and captain him ? Or will I get nowhere with such a strategy ?

It is best to gamble with captaincy when the bigger teams are playing each other so they will cancel each other out.
Then if you are wrong you might get away it if you are worng.
Last week I got away with naismith captain. Basically because Costa/Aguero/Rooney did not do well.

Baines has good fixtures in two weeks and could easily get attacking points against Liverpool and/or United. Rooney has a really good fixture and is worth keeping for another week. Can't see that worth it for free, never mind for a -4 hit...

    Hazard (c)

13.8% ownership is just too tasty

If I had him I'd captain him too.

But with 13.8% ownership, just getting his points is tasty enough... Not worth the (c) risk IMO.

I was being facetious. Too many people unhappy that "their" player is not in the watchlist or is too far down.

Well lads, throwing it out there. FPL-wise; Herrera better value/pick than ADM? Discuss.

No. ADM will have games where he gets two or three assists.

He won't outscore him for pts but he might put up a good fight for pts/mill...

Currently but i don't think he can keep the scoring up. (Shades of Ramsey last year) 🙂

Keeping-- chance of an assist in the Derby and home to WBR next and many good fixtures thereafter.
If he blanks next two - then out .

    So, why Tadic over Schneiderlin?

Is there something wrong with Schneiderlin I am missing? Cheaper and doing better so far?

One an attacking player on set pieces and pens, the other is box to box and has only recently found his shooting boots. Safe option is Tadic.

The one player I would have loved to see at Arsenal .

Would be the best CM partnership in the league, their passing and tackling stats alone are frightening.
