Wayne Rooney is described as having “a fighting chance” of making United’s opening game of the season against Newcastle according to latest reports.

Rooney was thought to be struggling for that match with a virus allegedly picked up on United’s tour of Nigeria in pre-season. However, Rooney’s condition has now improved and although he is yet to return to full training, that is now looking a possibility next week.

It is thought that he’ll still sit out of the Community Shield on Sunday but could be available for the season kick-off a week later. Ferguson is likely to hand a start to Frazier Campbell against Portsmouth on Sunday or opt for experience and shift Giggs forward to play off Carlos Tevez.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
