Didier Drogba has suffered knee ligament damage in tonight’s Champions League tie with Cluj, as confirmation came in that he had escaped a suspected fracture.

The striker was involved in an awkward challenge with a Cluj defender as he slid in on a Malouda cross. He appeared to be in agony, was treated for several minutes and was then eventually stretchered from the field.

He was apparently taken straight from the ground in an ambulance for x-rays, but it appears, fears of a break have been allayed.

This is still a massive blow for Chelsea who have only just welcomed Drogba back to fitness. Having suffered from key injuries last season, this term has started no better, with Deco and Carvalho still sidelined.

Drogba is likely to be absent for at least two months, which is almost certain to see Anelka handed another extended run in the side having just lost his place. Few Chelsea fans or fantasy managers will be that excited about that prospect however given Anelka’s showings so far this season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
