Amr Zaki needs a goal, both to help lift Wigan and to help repair his reputation with fantasy managers. Sadly, there are doubts as to whether that goal will come this weekend as it’s been revealed the Egyptian is carrying a number of knocks, in addition to suffering from flu.

According to statements from his “personal advisor” the Wigan striker took the field against Arsenal with flu and then went on to suffer a bang on the ribs. He’s also still carrying the after effects of a calf injury….

I’m not sure what to make of this. The cynic in me says that this is the Zaki camp providing some excuses for the recent lack of form which has seen his goals dry up and Wigan struggling.

It baffles me as to why Bruce would select a “sick” Zaki against Arsenal with Camara available and the knowledge that his side would be facing the Gunners youngsters. With Wigan floundering for league points, I’d be surprised if Bruce would jeopardise having Zaki available at St James’ Park this weekend by putting the Carling Cup tie with Arsenal first.

Today we got more details on the possible Zaki deal involving his Egyptian club Zamalek who are insisting that they will be looking for the “highest bid for the player”. Zaki’s “personal assistant” is likely to making more than one appearance in the coming months then as potential deals for the striker are discussed. A bad run of form is certainly not in the script for either the player or Zamalek.

I’ll keep my ear to the ground but right now, we have to consider Zaki a doubt going into the weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
