There’s good news from Anfield at last, as Rafa Benitez looks set to have his rotation options slashed with the transfer of both Alvaro Arbeloa and Andrea Dossena looking imminent.
Arbeloa is set to rejoin Real Madrid for a fee in the region of £4.5 million, while Dossena appears to be on his way to Napoli for a similar fee. Those moves would drastically reduce the competition for places in the Liverpool full-back positions, particularly at left-back. A welcome development for us fantasy managers…
With Fabio Aurelio struggling to make the season kick-off, it would appear to leave Emiliano Insua and Daniel Agger to compete for a starting role on the left. Glenn Johnson has the right-back role sewn up, although Philipp Degen will provide cover for both the right and left full back roles and Chris Mavinga is also in the mix at left-back, although he is vastly inexperienced and unlikely to figure in the league.
With Insua ranking as one of, if not the cheapest Liverpool defender available across the various fantasy games – it’s his chances of starting at left-back that look key. Aside from Johnson and the injured Aurellio, goals and assists are notoriously hard to come by from Liverpool defenders – it’s all about clean sheets. Insua could yet represent a relative bargain source of those, should Rafa commit to giving him a run in the side. Then it comes down to the length of Aurellio’s absence with Rafa recently confirming that the Brazilian would not be absent for six months as rumoured. Instead Aurellio is said to be out with his knee injury for just two months. That should see him make a return in September at the latest, giving Insua the opportunity for 5-6 starts before compeition for places hots up further .
