Well, he’s gone and done it again. 80 minutes in Aston Villa’s defeat to Rapid Vienna last night Curtis Davies had to leave the field due to a shoulder injury – Davies has had a history of shoulder woes in recent years. There is no news as of yet how serious the knock is (O’Neill speaks of it being a growing concern), but it is a worry with no other senior centre-backs on the books at Aston Villa.

After only just recently scoring in their surprise victory over Liverpool at Anfield on monday this was not the news Martin O’Neill or the fans would have wanted, especially with the team already lacking after Martin Laursen’s retirement last season. Or are they?…

Following Joleon Lescott’s big money move to Manchester City, one man looks like he might have donned the light blue shirt for the last time. Aston Villa have had a bid accepted (rumoured to be in the region of £6million) for current Eastlands captain Richard Dunne, the deal looks all the more likely now with Villa desperate for another centre-back in the squad to provide much needed cover – offering Dunne the captaincy could also go a long way to proving his worth to his potential new team.

Dunne is already priced at £5m in the Fantasy Premier League game so won’t be a standout purchase option in comparison to the rest of the villa defence. With his somewhat uncanny knack at scoring own goals, and susceptibility to the odd red card too – I would put my own buyer beware tag on him. O’Neill is definitely bolstering the ranks though, so if you are looking at investing, then the remaining defenders seem like more suitable picks to me – especially the recently signed up Stephen Warnock. The ex-Blackburn defender is destined to make the left-back berth his own and has been the recipient of a price drop already coming in at £4.9m. Plenty for us to ponder at Villa Park then.
