On a day when team news will be fired at us at the usual rate of knots, Alex Ferguson has piped up early this morning with perhaps the most reassuring bulletin we will get all day.

“Wayne Rooney is fit, there is nothing wrong with his knee”

Ferguson’s statement will come as a welcome boost for Rooney owners who were no doubt contemplating a switch to Fernando Torres in the light of reports this week that the United striker was struggling with an ongoing knee problem. There is of course still a chance that Rooney will be rested for the trip to Bolton although that seems unlikely given the current Premier League situation.

Looking at Rooney’s fixtures in comparison to Torres, there does appear to be some merit in making the switch regardless of Rooney’s presence in tomorrow’s lineup. In some ways then this news makes that decision that little bit more difficult.

United will also have Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes available to them. Ferguson must now decide how and when to use their experience given that United take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League Quarter-Final on Tuesday.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
