Im Not Marshal Foch Im Not Marshal Foch
Share:

Lets take a bit of a journey down memory lane to month ago, to the end of Gameweek 3. If like me you can’t remember what you did yesterday let alone a month ago, allow me to remind you – this was the last international break. Like them or loath them this period saw a large majority of Fantasy Football Scout managers (attempting to) improve their teams using the incredibly useful but oft wasted perk of the game – the Wildcard.

The benefit of utilising the Wildcard during an international break is the amount of time it allows you to make the most of price increases, as well as giving you added time to weigh up the pro’s and cons of bringing certain players in. The gap between Gameweek 3 and 4 saw a number of managers do just that as well as providing the opportunity to remove the dead wood which they’d spent the summer collecting. The end of Gameweek 7 sees another international break and an opportunity for those who thought better of utilising it back then to have a little fiddle with their teams and hopefully create the much sought after “perfect team” (that is until they hate their team again).

Not only does the international break seem like an ideal opportunity to improve Fantasy Football teams but it comes off the back of an incredibly average week for a lot of managers. Under performance of key players and the form of others have seen heads turn and in the cutthroat world of Fantasy Football that means changes. For others who’ve used up this fantasy perk, this week has given food for thought about the transfers they need to make to sort out their teams. Changes need to be made and for many these changes will involve players wearing the red of Liverpool.

Fantasy football fans need to be re-educated and retrained and this writer is no exception. With all due respect to Blackpool, before the season started, the proposition of a home tie for any team against the Tangerines, on paper, looked a banker. But Blackpool bar a couple of games against Arsenal and Chelsea have excelled. Call it the “Hull” factor, scoff at the thought of them staying up, but the fact remains for now it would appear dangerous to back a team against them. On the flip side for sorry Liverpool it looks difficult to back them against anyone.

Many people brought in Liverpool players this week, namely the big guns Gerrard and Torres, for the game against the t’other pool in the league. Many more will be getting rid of them over the next couple of weeks. Coming second and fourth in the Captain Poll this week a number of people would have expected a big return from the two lads in red. Certainly those with Gerrard will ultimately be relieved that they managed to get anything out of the game at all and for those with Torres nothing much can be said to console those who captained him. 1 point doubled to 2 makes you feel a bit sick.

Many will look to dump Gerrard for Fabregas to coincide with the Spaniards expected return from injury, others will look to the Dutch master Rafael Van der Vaart who has made a blistering start to his career in a Spurs shirt. For those with Torres the question seems to be – “who on earth do I get?” Certainly for the minority that don’t have Drogba, this would be the obvious choice. Otherwise the obvious would suggest the dependable Tevez or the consistent Mr Bent.

There’s always a temptation to retain “expensive” players as they make you feel safe. Form, however, is far more important than reputations in Fantasy Football and players like Torres unfortunately are lacking in the former. Why not take a look at lower priced options who have been performing well and who are sitting atop the FPL form guide at the moment. The resurgent Johan Elmander at Bolton has been in impressive form of late with 4 goals and 2 assists already this season. With three home games in the next four for the Swede, now may be the time to downgrade from a bit hitter and free up some cash to move around the team. An alternative is the incredible cheap Luke Varney. With 2 goals and 3 assists in his last 5 games its hard to ignore the ex-Championship journeyman. Remember this is Knee Jerk so take it with a pinch of salt but at 4.5m and like Elmander with three home games in the next four, it may well be worth a look.

Fantasy Football can often be won and lost on punts and whilst, in previous years, it would have been hard to imagine calling bringing Torres in for a home game against Blackpool as a “punt”, it may be better to move away from so called “big” players to the smaller, but seemingly more fruitful bargain buys, if gains are to be made in this most inconsistent of seasons.

For those playing the Oz EPL.

Moved up to 16th & 54th overall. The league moved up 2 spots to 12th overall. François Bozizé top scored yet again. Biggest risers this week were Y.Toure, Piquionne, Walters, VDV & T.Cahill who all rose 1.4 million, I managed to buy the 1st two even though Yaya was a failure.
Biggest droppers were R.Johnson & a heap of Liverpool & Arsenal players who all dropped over 1 million.

Price changes only happen once a GW. Trading hard early in the season to get a good team is important. My team still sucks but I try & bench the rubbish. Have to get the cheap performing players early before they rise quickly. You have a 3 game buffer before they rise.

I have 2 free trades this week. They will be spent in midfield & a possible new keeper making a hit depending on Fabregas. Nani is the only MU I want. Malouda, Bale & Gerrard are the players that could leave my team.

I'd edge towards Alcaraz, Arteta & VDV.

From a personal point of view, I am looking to hold onto Malouda until after the Wolves game; then I'll probably get rid. Bale is also becoming expendable (although he made 6 key passes with no end product v Villa) with VDV now hogging the limelight.

Planning to do this over the nex few weeks. What do people think of:
    O'Shea->Elmo
    Hart->Foster

I can then afford to upgrade Malouda to Cesc when he returns. But it means I can't get VDV for Bale. Thoughts? Any cheaper guys worth getting in my team?

Getting in Fabs is more important than VDV particularly with Arsenal having 3 home games in the next 4. Those moves look fine.

I dumped Hart before this gw - not enough cleansheets from City to warrant that investment.

You mean avoid doubling up on Brum defence? I hear ya, I guess it comes down to Malouda and Davies vs. Arteta and VDV. Both seem decent enough for the long haul but I quite like the thought of Arteta as a differential, surely it is only a matter of time before he starts to pull in the double digit returns?

Chelsea have the best free kick takers, all with their own abilities.

Frank Lampard's free kicks are powerful and accurate.

Didier Drogba's are powerful and dip viciously.

Why are people getting rid of Malouda? And why in a rush to bring back Fabs so soon?

Malouda will probably outscore every other midfielder in FPL over the whole season. Fabs probably gets himself injured again the week before he has his next tasty home game, creating another mad rush to fill his place.

Possibly lower as 45, 50 = weekly 250K. Not sure how many entered here.

Apart from not having fab, I'm pretty happy with my team at the mo, I think i'll give him to around GW10 before I attempt to get him back, any thoughts on who to drop for fab or indeed any other suggested improvements?

    Robinson, (Carson)
    Mummy, Konchesky, Dann, (Perch, Jara)
    Arteta, VDV, Malouda, Nani, (Ferguson)
    Drogs, Tevez, Berb.

Downgrade Berba and then take your pick from that midfield to give the chop. That's gonna be everyone's problem. Good luck.

      PS: Dump Konchesky asap.

i think i'll give konchesky a few more weeks. I think liverpool need to start from the basics and reckon we could see a few clean sheets.

          2. Livpool cant keep a CS vs blackpool at home so I think the odds of keeping a CS vs Ever/Bolt/Wigan/Stoke away and Chelsea at home are close to...Id say ZERO

Good move. Elmo is the best inv i have made this year. I'm seriously considering playing him every game now. He really plays a very advance role in the Sunderland team.

    Krul Foster

    Coleman Alex Oshea Mummy Givet

    Nzogbia Fab VDV Nani Albrighton

I think I have an Ok defence, and have One attacking Players from the 5 Best attacking teams
    Drogba
    Fab
    Nani
    Tevez
    VDV.

I also have Alex and the plan was to cash in the profits and downgrade him. Luckily he scored this wekend and might rise another 0.1m.

Chelsea have some tough games coming up and I believe Bosingwa might be back after the Int break. He came of with cramp yesterday and maybe he gets rested?

I am a big fan of Alex and consider him their best CB.....But what Ancelotti thinks is what matters..

And Re: fixtures,if they can keep a clean sheet vs Arsenal ,they are good bet to get a CS against any one in the league
