Im Not Marshal Foch Im Not Marshal Foch

Lets take a bit of a journey down memory lane to month ago, to the end of Gameweek 3. If like me you can’t remember what you did yesterday let alone a month ago, allow me to remind you – this was the last international break. Like them or loath them this period saw a large majority of Fantasy Football Scout managers (attempting to) improve their teams using the incredibly useful but oft wasted perk of the game – the Wildcard.

The benefit of utilising the Wildcard during an international break is the amount of time it allows you to make the most of price increases, as well as giving you added time to weigh up the pro’s and cons of bringing certain players in. The gap between Gameweek 3 and 4 saw a number of managers do just that as well as providing the opportunity to remove the dead wood which they’d spent the summer collecting. The end of Gameweek 7 sees another international break and an opportunity for those who thought better of utilising it back then to have a little fiddle with their teams and hopefully create the much sought after “perfect team” (that is until they hate their team again).

Not only does the international break seem like an ideal opportunity to improve Fantasy Football teams but it comes off the back of an incredibly average week for a lot of managers. Under performance of key players and the form of others have seen heads turn and in the cutthroat world of Fantasy Football that means changes. For others who’ve used up this fantasy perk, this week has given food for thought about the transfers they need to make to sort out their teams. Changes need to be made and for many these changes will involve players wearing the red of Liverpool.

Fantasy football fans need to be re-educated and retrained and this writer is no exception. With all due respect to Blackpool, before the season started, the proposition of a home tie for any team against the Tangerines, on paper, looked a banker. But Blackpool bar a couple of games against Arsenal and Chelsea have excelled. Call it the “Hull” factor, scoff at the thought of them staying up, but the fact remains for now it would appear dangerous to back a team against them. On the flip side for sorry Liverpool it looks difficult to back them against anyone.

Many people brought in Liverpool players this week, namely the big guns Gerrard and Torres, for the game against the t’other pool in the league. Many more will be getting rid of them over the next couple of weeks. Coming second and fourth in the Captain Poll this week a number of people would have expected a big return from the two lads in red. Certainly those with Gerrard will ultimately be relieved that they managed to get anything out of the game at all and for those with Torres nothing much can be said to console those who captained him. 1 point doubled to 2 makes you feel a bit sick.

Many will look to dump Gerrard for Fabregas to coincide with the Spaniards expected return from injury, others will look to the Dutch master Rafael Van der Vaart who has made a blistering start to his career in a Spurs shirt. For those with Torres the question seems to be – “who on earth do I get?” Certainly for the minority that don’t have Drogba, this would be the obvious choice. Otherwise the obvious would suggest the dependable Tevez or the consistent Mr Bent.

There’s always a temptation to retain “expensive” players as they make you feel safe. Form, however, is far more important than reputations in Fantasy Football and players like Torres unfortunately are lacking in the former. Why not take a look at lower priced options who have been performing well and who are sitting atop the FPL form guide at the moment. The resurgent Johan Elmander at Bolton has been in impressive form of late with 4 goals and 2 assists already this season. With three home games in the next four for the Swede, now may be the time to downgrade from a bit hitter and free up some cash to move around the team. An alternative is the incredible cheap Luke Varney. With 2 goals and 3 assists in his last 5 games its hard to ignore the ex-Championship journeyman. Remember this is Knee Jerk so take it with a pinch of salt but at 4.5m and like Elmander with three home games in the next four, it may well be worth a look.

Fantasy Football can often be won and lost on punts and whilst, in previous years, it would have been hard to imagine calling bringing Torres in for a home game against Blackpool as a “punt”, it may be better to move away from so called “big” players to the smaller, but seemingly more fruitful bargain buys, if gains are to be made in this most inconsistent of seasons.

Well with GW7 over and another win over my rival, i'v put my thoughts towards who i'm going to be taking out/bringing in later in the week and put a template below of what my team may look like for GW8.

    Hahnemann
    Shawcross Samba Elmohamady
    Fabregas(C) N'Zogbia Nani Nolan
    Drogba Carroll Tevez

    Foster Albrighton Dann Konchesky

    Bale > N'Zogbia
    Gerrard > Fabregas

    Dann Mummy Alcaraz Toure Salcido
    Toure Bale Malouda VDV Nani
    Carroll Barbetov Drogba

Any other GW4 wildcarders now feeling smug about their cashflow? I've just brought VDV in to make the following team:

    Krul
    Alex / Konch / Jones
    Fabs / Malouda / VDV / Nani
    Drogs / Berbs / Carroll

Injuries permitting, that midfield could score big time all season. As long as Berbs keep his form going, then him and Drogs could be in for the long haul. My only real concerns are Konch and Carroll.

(Yes, my benchwarmers are all bargain basement, but Barton, Jara and Gohouri have all shown they can score points)

My choice was Berbs + VDV or Tevez + 6.4m or less midfielder. I'm willing to bet the former will score a lot more points.

My other goalie is Mignolet, who rotates home games with Krul. I like the look of Sunderland at home (though I appreciate Gordon could come in).

The top 4's (apart from Arsenals maybe) defences have always done well. There will be freak weeks when they don't perform but at the end of the season, it'll be Chelsea, Utd, City defenders at the top of the charts. It's just trying to find the bargains in those eh? Not sure Boswingwa will get back in frankly.

I don't know what to make of things really AP..2 new defenders are nervy and just not up to it at this level, especially the old bloke. Keeper situation has been SOOO obviously shite since ye spanked us 4-2 in the 04/05 season when both Almunia and Lehmann were dire at the time. It's unforgiveable this hasn't been sorted since.
Still, if Cesc was playing today then we would've definitely scored 1 or 2 imo as we had so much of the ball..Theo and RvP being out would hurt any team too..Wilshere,Nasri are positives. Im not comparing him to Vidic cos he is not good enough.
But he has been pretty good not world class for years now.

To write him off and say he aint up to the level is hard on a lad who has played at this level for years and higher.

For the new lad the comment is spot on. Vidic also "slipped " last week as Elmander bullied him which happens to every player but lets not knee jerk into an overall impression based on one game.

These players had competent careers outside of England.

John O shea, Evans, Brown are no more than Competent.

                    No, it doesn't.

I'm basing him on being the most, possibly second most experienced defender after Verm, in the arsenal team, hence you could compare him to Rio, Vidic, Alex, Terry. The gulf in class is massive, even if he has managed a few international matches.

He was bought to be the experienced head.

Anybody think Fabregas will drop 0.1 before the next deadline?

Just did Gerard to fabs and bale to nani for a 4 point hit wit zero left in the bank. It felt right and if I left it another I probably wouldn't be able to afford it. I'm very confident it was the right call... Just hope no injuries come my way!!

I want to do something similar, but will need to spend an extra 4 points to do it- and after Nani's rise last night, the other transfer will be for a rubbish player.

Buggu, can you please re-read what you said above please about nani? ok, i actually try to defend you on here a bit, cos sometimes, you make a half decent point, but telling people to take out nani this week is the mark of a true halfwit.

Now either you love all the stick you get (youre currntly on course to get in the dictionary like Homer Simpson-

      To pull a Buggu;

to return to a website and cherrypick from random predictions that you made the previous seven days and claim undue credit, and in the process wreck the heads of the people you're trying to impress

Now, how bout copping on and giving YOURSELF a break, and not post such blatant nonsense, and you wont get as much stick on here all day whenever someone mentions a prediction and they mention BUGGU BUGGU BUGGU!!

Unless you like it when peole give you stick and like bad and good attention, like a certain Ronaldo afficionado, in which case,.....carry on.

Even when you offer advice like you did to Buggu you have to drop in some form of offensive name call on the lad. Its extremley bad form to call someone mental/crazy /cretin when all they do is talk about playing or not playing a player.

Slow reply to all if either are still reading. But Microkorg is a lot of fun and you can definitely just use it to dik about without having to know too much about synthesis.

I think a lot of musicians use it because it's great for live performances. In the studio people tend to use more software based stuff. But for hooking up with Garageband it's spot on.

Got Joe Cole in at the start of the season as thought he was gonna be a big hitter, got a red card straight away but his performances in Europe made me justify bringing him back in on his return, even captained him for a game. Not sure what my strange obsession is with Joe but surely he's gotta go now.
