Im Not Marshal Foch Im Not Marshal Foch
Share:

Lets take a bit of a journey down memory lane to month ago, to the end of Gameweek 3. If like me you can’t remember what you did yesterday let alone a month ago, allow me to remind you – this was the last international break. Like them or loath them this period saw a large majority of Fantasy Football Scout managers (attempting to) improve their teams using the incredibly useful but oft wasted perk of the game – the Wildcard.

The benefit of utilising the Wildcard during an international break is the amount of time it allows you to make the most of price increases, as well as giving you added time to weigh up the pro’s and cons of bringing certain players in. The gap between Gameweek 3 and 4 saw a number of managers do just that as well as providing the opportunity to remove the dead wood which they’d spent the summer collecting. The end of Gameweek 7 sees another international break and an opportunity for those who thought better of utilising it back then to have a little fiddle with their teams and hopefully create the much sought after “perfect team” (that is until they hate their team again).

Not only does the international break seem like an ideal opportunity to improve Fantasy Football teams but it comes off the back of an incredibly average week for a lot of managers. Under performance of key players and the form of others have seen heads turn and in the cutthroat world of Fantasy Football that means changes. For others who’ve used up this fantasy perk, this week has given food for thought about the transfers they need to make to sort out their teams. Changes need to be made and for many these changes will involve players wearing the red of Liverpool.

Fantasy football fans need to be re-educated and retrained and this writer is no exception. With all due respect to Blackpool, before the season started, the proposition of a home tie for any team against the Tangerines, on paper, looked a banker. But Blackpool bar a couple of games against Arsenal and Chelsea have excelled. Call it the “Hull” factor, scoff at the thought of them staying up, but the fact remains for now it would appear dangerous to back a team against them. On the flip side for sorry Liverpool it looks difficult to back them against anyone.

Many people brought in Liverpool players this week, namely the big guns Gerrard and Torres, for the game against the t’other pool in the league. Many more will be getting rid of them over the next couple of weeks. Coming second and fourth in the Captain Poll this week a number of people would have expected a big return from the two lads in red. Certainly those with Gerrard will ultimately be relieved that they managed to get anything out of the game at all and for those with Torres nothing much can be said to console those who captained him. 1 point doubled to 2 makes you feel a bit sick.

Many will look to dump Gerrard for Fabregas to coincide with the Spaniards expected return from injury, others will look to the Dutch master Rafael Van der Vaart who has made a blistering start to his career in a Spurs shirt. For those with Torres the question seems to be – “who on earth do I get?” Certainly for the minority that don’t have Drogba, this would be the obvious choice. Otherwise the obvious would suggest the dependable Tevez or the consistent Mr Bent.

There’s always a temptation to retain “expensive” players as they make you feel safe. Form, however, is far more important than reputations in Fantasy Football and players like Torres unfortunately are lacking in the former. Why not take a look at lower priced options who have been performing well and who are sitting atop the FPL form guide at the moment. The resurgent Johan Elmander at Bolton has been in impressive form of late with 4 goals and 2 assists already this season. With three home games in the next four for the Swede, now may be the time to downgrade from a bit hitter and free up some cash to move around the team. An alternative is the incredible cheap Luke Varney. With 2 goals and 3 assists in his last 5 games its hard to ignore the ex-Championship journeyman. Remember this is Knee Jerk so take it with a pinch of salt but at 4.5m and like Elmander with three home games in the next four, it may well be worth a look.

Fantasy Football can often be won and lost on punts and whilst, in previous years, it would have been hard to imagine calling bringing Torres in for a home game against Blackpool as a “punt”, it may be better to move away from so called “big” players to the smaller, but seemingly more fruitful bargain buys, if gains are to be made in this most inconsistent of seasons.

Funny one that. I love most sports but don't really like rugby and although I never miss an England cricket match I don't follow Couny cricket at all. Love football, golf, Eng cricket, boxing and F1 the most.

I'd agree with spending less on defense. Try get two strong bases from Chelsea & Man City then get half decent rotation cheepies. Also I'd lose Gomes for Robinson or some such 4.5 goalkeeper.

    Foster (Carson)
    Oshea, Richards*, Konchesky* (Faye, Jones)
    Malouda, VDV, Bale*, Nani (Adam)
    Drogs, Tevez, Caroll

    Already done Essien > VDV

With Bale, Richards, Konchesky set to go down tonite...I was thinking:

    1. Richards > Alex (subject to rotation with Boateng, Zabaleta)
    2. Konchesky > Mummy (got to sell LFC players - defence is a shambles)
    3. Bale > Dempsey/or any one else at 7m (or should I keep Bale???)

OR 4. Richards > Alcaraz (so that I can put that cash towards Fabregas replacing Bale)

I appreciate your thoughts in advance.

Just a small bit on Chelsea (tenner on at 10/11) bad weekend all round. Worst bits include:
      Ben Arfa's double legbreak
Wigan hammering Saints in the Grand Final (legend Keiron Cunningham's last game too)
Spending most of yesterday morning and afternoon driving the porcelain bus.
Hope next weekend is an improvement!

I know what I'm about to say may be not popular on her but... In order for me to get Fabs, I need to get rid of say VDV and Nasri? My question would be would Fabs at 11.8 get more points then alternating those two because if you get Fabs, you would need to play him every week. With him not getting play time and being a bit 'fragile'. Is he truly an essential???

When he plays he is essential most certainly. I think it shows with the amount of games he has played this season and the amount of points he has already acquired. If no one gets cropped (who's in my team) over the break he'll be brought back into my team.

right, i think im gonna use the wildcard.. ive gotton the knee-jerk.. topping all my leagues but its very tight at the top

im ranked in the 48k mark not too bad.. need to get the likes of tevez, vdv nani in..

anyone know best way to use it like what players are best to try msake fundes from meaning who could possibly rise by 0.2 before next round of matches? or will i just get in who i want

You needed to do it yesterday to get the most from the double risers. Toure, Nani, Odemwingie and VdV already went up last night

Bale looking set for a drop - Not wise to transfer this early on an international week but if you only have the exact change you have no choice. Will you be gutted if Bale drops and you can't afford the transfer?

Decent week, Alex's screamer saved me!
Got two weeks to think about it (sigh...) but here's my team:
    Foster Krul
    Alex Konchesky Hughes Shawcross Jara
    Gerrard Malouda Bale Davies Barton
    Drogba Tevez Carroll
    1.2 in the bank

    A. Gerrard => Fabregas
    B. get Nani in for WBA game (Konchesky downgrade and Bale out, 4 point hit)
    C. bring in a different Man U player as a straight swap for Bale (possibly Scholes?)

It's more between A and B I guess...but what do you all think?
P.S. I would do A next week if not this one, Fabregas is going to be a must have!

    Cheers

    Hi all,

Played wildcard, so tweaking feverishly away.

Worth Nani>Fergusson? It'd allow me to significantly upgrade the defence. Jara>Alex, Foley>O'Shea, maybe even Elmo>Konchesky.

It'd leave me with no exposure to Utd's attacking points though.

            Just checked the Chelsea sight....

The game will best be remembered for the thunderbolt by our Brazilian centre-back which wrapped the game up with five minutes remaining. He left the field shortly afterwards with an injury.

'Alex has got a slight problem in his thigh, I don't know whether it was from that rocket that he hit late in the game or what but he just has a little knick and we hope he'll be okay.

I am going to bring in Alex...thoughts boys???

No doubt. Gerrard was lucky getting the points he got the last few GW's, and Liverpool have a serious problem.

The problem with Bale is the Spurs strikers, he's had a bit of bad luck. Saying that though I got VdV in for him due to the set pieces and pennys
