Im Not Marshal Foch Im Not Marshal Foch

Lets take a bit of a journey down memory lane to month ago, to the end of Gameweek 3. If like me you can’t remember what you did yesterday let alone a month ago, allow me to remind you – this was the last international break. Like them or loath them this period saw a large majority of Fantasy Football Scout managers (attempting to) improve their teams using the incredibly useful but oft wasted perk of the game – the Wildcard.

The benefit of utilising the Wildcard during an international break is the amount of time it allows you to make the most of price increases, as well as giving you added time to weigh up the pro’s and cons of bringing certain players in. The gap between Gameweek 3 and 4 saw a number of managers do just that as well as providing the opportunity to remove the dead wood which they’d spent the summer collecting. The end of Gameweek 7 sees another international break and an opportunity for those who thought better of utilising it back then to have a little fiddle with their teams and hopefully create the much sought after “perfect team” (that is until they hate their team again).

Not only does the international break seem like an ideal opportunity to improve Fantasy Football teams but it comes off the back of an incredibly average week for a lot of managers. Under performance of key players and the form of others have seen heads turn and in the cutthroat world of Fantasy Football that means changes. For others who’ve used up this fantasy perk, this week has given food for thought about the transfers they need to make to sort out their teams. Changes need to be made and for many these changes will involve players wearing the red of Liverpool.

Fantasy football fans need to be re-educated and retrained and this writer is no exception. With all due respect to Blackpool, before the season started, the proposition of a home tie for any team against the Tangerines, on paper, looked a banker. But Blackpool bar a couple of games against Arsenal and Chelsea have excelled. Call it the “Hull” factor, scoff at the thought of them staying up, but the fact remains for now it would appear dangerous to back a team against them. On the flip side for sorry Liverpool it looks difficult to back them against anyone.

Many people brought in Liverpool players this week, namely the big guns Gerrard and Torres, for the game against the t’other pool in the league. Many more will be getting rid of them over the next couple of weeks. Coming second and fourth in the Captain Poll this week a number of people would have expected a big return from the two lads in red. Certainly those with Gerrard will ultimately be relieved that they managed to get anything out of the game at all and for those with Torres nothing much can be said to console those who captained him. 1 point doubled to 2 makes you feel a bit sick.

Many will look to dump Gerrard for Fabregas to coincide with the Spaniards expected return from injury, others will look to the Dutch master Rafael Van der Vaart who has made a blistering start to his career in a Spurs shirt. For those with Torres the question seems to be – “who on earth do I get?” Certainly for the minority that don’t have Drogba, this would be the obvious choice. Otherwise the obvious would suggest the dependable Tevez or the consistent Mr Bent.

There’s always a temptation to retain “expensive” players as they make you feel safe. Form, however, is far more important than reputations in Fantasy Football and players like Torres unfortunately are lacking in the former. Why not take a look at lower priced options who have been performing well and who are sitting atop the FPL form guide at the moment. The resurgent Johan Elmander at Bolton has been in impressive form of late with 4 goals and 2 assists already this season. With three home games in the next four for the Swede, now may be the time to downgrade from a bit hitter and free up some cash to move around the team. An alternative is the incredible cheap Luke Varney. With 2 goals and 3 assists in his last 5 games its hard to ignore the ex-Championship journeyman. Remember this is Knee Jerk so take it with a pinch of salt but at 4.5m and like Elmander with three home games in the next four, it may well be worth a look.

Fantasy Football can often be won and lost on punts and whilst, in previous years, it would have been hard to imagine calling bringing Torres in for a home game against Blackpool as a “punt”, it may be better to move away from so called “big” players to the smaller, but seemingly more fruitful bargain buys, if gains are to be made in this most inconsistent of seasons.

i put carroll in my team because he is a very good striker for 5M.

even if he drops 7 times, he will still be a very good striker that cost me 5M.

i think you are too money focused

All it takes is him to score 2 goals and get some BP and he'll be flying back up so I'm not worrying as of yet.

just wilcardrd myself..feeling happy about it.. got 2 weeks to structure my team.

got the likes of nani, tevez, johnson vdv in gonna keep a close eye on any possible double risers.

my main problem is the whole bale v vdv ive had bale since the start and just got vdv in. i dont think i can keep them both i wish redknapp would play bale as a winger then i wouldnt bother with vdv

Caroll to me is a waste. Everyone thinks he's good because of that one match, and Newcastle lost a lot of attacking creativity with HBAs injury sunday.
For Caroll's price I see Odemwingie (although a difficult next match) or Dembele (probably back for next match) as better options.

atilla, feel gutted for newcastle tonight. the penalty that never was and the one that was completely altered the outcome of the game. i've not heard one person say ameobi's wasn't a pen which says it all really. as fort he tevez one well the tackle was debateable, but it being outside the area wasn't. now you have lost potentially you're best attacking output in ben arfa for basically the season. the only way it could have got worse is if tiote got injured too. my full sympathy is with hughton

Yeah it was an awful hard day for them. Particularly the Ben Arfa injury, I really want to see him in a Newcastle shirt again he looked great. Plus I have to give the lads bravery massive respect - a double leg break and he still waves to the fans from the stretcher.
The refereeing was abysmal today, it happens now and again but jeezas he wants talking to.
There were some positives though, I thought we played pretty well and Tiote was absolutely immense (retarded that he was overlooked for BP). Gutierrez was a fantastic outlet too and Barton behaved himself.
A bad day all round though, Ben Arfa is a huge loss.

Fellow WC, buy these players. Based on highest gains above 8%, these are players who could make the magic .2 increase:

      Rafael Van der Vaart
      Ahmed Elmohamady
      Carlos Tevez
      Johan Elmander
      Matthew Etherington
      Charlie Adam
      Alex
      Antolin Alcaraz
      Ashley Cole
      Didier Drogba
      Joe Hart
      Luis Nani
      Adam Johnson
      Peter Odemwingie

Keep them till morning of the 16th or change as soon as the .2 rise happens.

PDM, I missed 12 GW's of that season where I didn't make a trade or change a player. I managed 1712th pretty much from Xmas & had the bandwagon players when I used my WC around Xmas. I had cheap strikers & a great defence & midfield. To me that season was the easier of all due to Ronaldo, Vidic, Everton defence etc. You won CYKI that season & did quite well in the next season so you can manage a team but take too many risks & don't stick to the basics anymore. You have become the next FRAN when it comes to FPL. 😉

True, but he wasnt in the top ten
            10) Cromwell (controversial)
            9) Lord Horatio Nelson (should be higher)
            8) John Lennon *bleurgh* but better than Bono
            7) Elizabeth I
            6) Sir Isaac Newton
            5) William Shakespear
            4) Charles Darwin
            3) Lady Di *bleurgh*
            2) I.K. Brunel

                  😀

Never realise how much he is really loved there until I watched the World cup with some England fans in a pub in Turkey.

Suffice to say they so no problem with him being part of the squad as he is a "legend"

My friend (Russian dude) was nearly attacked after the USA game for suggesting they (The fans) would enjoy it the WC more if they went with a more carefree approach and didnt expect to win the whole thing

....He then suggested they would do well to get beyond the last 16 and a riot nearly began 😀

But ya Beckham would win it of that I have no doubt.

So far I've stuck with Chamakh, as my reasoning goes "he's playing every match for one of the most offensive teams, even though he's not a top class player, he's bound to score a lot of goals in that position". Add to that the price of 8.0 as he was at the start of the season, he seemed a sure bid. Now I'm starting to feel I might as well swap him for Odemwingie or Dembele, and get some more money for other positions.. What do you guys think? Is my original reasoning still true, or is e.g Chamakh > Dembele and another 2.6 "cash" better?

Exactly , VDV is much more appealing than Bale , and having both not really an option.
Im sure some weeks Bale will score a few points , but so will the Ethringtons and Adamses , and they all cheaper than Bale

You have to pick one. You can't chop & change. I'd stick with Odemwingle if you only want the 0.2 then will sell him for a profit before GW8. Whoever you replace him with may have also risen making the 0.1 useless.

Cheers. I didn't want to chop and change, just wanted to make sure I had the most chance of getting the profit in. I understand that I need to get my desired final players in before they go up. Might stick with Odem anyway.

Just did Bale > Etherington .. it leaves me with enough cash to do Grandin > N'Zogbia next GW given that their value doesnt change.. Can do it now but trying to avoid the hit.. will leave me with a front line of:

        Arshavin Malouda Etherington Nolan N'Zogbia
        Drogba Tevez Berbatov

I know 1 has to benched every week but it kinda gives more flexibility..

I guess you don't rate a team that has 5 clean sheets from 7 in defence. Konchesky might be leaving my team soon as Pool are hopeless in defence again. Reina has to have a blinder for a CS.

from an article in the independent:

Hughton's decision to keep Andy Carroll in reserve for the first time this season was curious given the expectation of an England call-up, though the manager said a virus had reduced his striker's performance levels.

          10 to 10.1 then drops to 10 = 10.
          10 to 10.1 then drops to 10 thens drops to 9.9 = 9.9

keegan and butt in the espn studio and all the match of the day guys have said it was a fair tackle. as if him coming through unnecessarily with his other leg and needlessly catching ben arfa's standing leg is irreleevnt. de jons is so quick, powerfull and explosive over 5 yards this will happen A LOT more in his career unfortunately. i give players the benefit of the doubt if it's a one off as these things happen but de jong has broken many a limb in his young career

Just noticed you used your WC in GW6. Funny how the week you WC can affect your team big time. You try to get a good score that week & in the next few GWs & choosing a tricky week equals having to fix your team quickly. Glad I picked GW4 for mine, suspect the teams that used GW4 will benefit the most.

just read back a few of the pages and read a couple of 'hey guys everyone told you torres was a bad captain choice bla bla bla. it was obvious he would get nothing etc etc'

        BULL SH*T!

he stung me too AB. he wasnt a bad choice, he could have knocked a few past blackpool, but its just bad luck. tevez was always likely to get 1 goal, torres could have got 3. that was the gamble, and it backfired, but i'm certain we will bounce back next week

joe cole and n'gog could both have had a hattrick that game, torres would inevitably taken at least one of those chances. all it showed was he couldn't score in 8 minutes.

I never believed it for a second. I'm not going to come on and brag about how smart I was for not buying him, let alone captaining him, but I really thought from the beginning that there is no more expensive risk in FPL right now this side of Arshavin and Rooney.

For 11.5, there are just too many way more solid options than a slightly injured guy in terrible form on an abysmal team pklaying against a more than formidable side that feels they have a lot to prove. People point to his performance last week, but considering one of those assists shouldn't have even been allowed, he stays at the same kind of risk.

Tough luck for you, and it certainly isn't as bad as they are saying, but even you have to admit that the odds weren't exactly in your favor.

we will never know as he didn't get to play more than 10mins.
in his last 5 home games he scored 9, 19, 13, 9, 7 with liverpool struggling just as much and torres just as fit.

Are we ignoring the 1 point when Arsenal was there? Granted, he didn't play much, but it certainly factors into consideration of his fitness.

I really don't think we can pretend he was as fit this year as he was at the tail end of last. Liverpool's, I 'll grant you, but not his. The world cup jacked him up: if it hadn't, he'd have been a much better option. Based solely on his performances since the drop off in quality, as it stood before this gameweek, he is nothing but a big 11.5 million question mark.

i apologise last 5 starts. fair enough take his last 2 home games THIS SEASON. 9, 7. both against better defences than blackpool. the price is irrelevent as he was only bought for this game and the one before.
my beef is with people posting how it was foolish captaining torres as if he played 90 mins and did nothing

No one can know your transfer plans as far as when you intend to remove him, so that's a bit of an irrelevant argument if you ask me. At the same time, most disagreed with the three bonus points he got against WBA, and you know as well as I that the 7 in Sunderland surely should have been 4, and would have been had it been most other teams. Very little to inspire confidence considering that price tag, even if you are ditching him right away.

I am far from saying it was foolish, and I agree they are idiots if they are going to act like it was obvious he was going to get injured. But I will say that its impossible to deny, given form and fitness, that having him in your team was a very big risk.

p.s he was the bookies' favourite to score at any time this weekend, so in the most literal sense of the word 'the odds' were in my favour

Yes, probably most of the last bookies who said Blackpool wouldn't get in the double digits in points this year.
