United undone by a Baggies bounce back. Liverpool’s slide continues. City’s momentum is maintained and a Drogba-less Chelsea fail to blow the door down at Villa. Here’s another round of notes from the Gameweek weekend…

Mark Hughes handed Diomansy Kamara a first start of the season against Spurs at the Cottage; with Mousa Dembele also returning to the side this meant that Clint Dempsey reverted to a midfield role. This obviously dents Dempsey’s Fantasy potential but also makes his starting role less secure given that Damien Duff will be vying for a start on his return from a calf injury. Having said that Dempsey enjoyed a very decent day at the office, laying on the assist for Kamara’s opener and proving a constant threat to the Spurs defence – no player had more shots on goal (5) in Saturday’s games. Dempsey, Mousa Dembele and Kamara all offer mid-price potential as Fulham embark on a decent run of games (wba WIG AVL).

It’s also worth noting that Hughes opted to keep Chris Baird at right-back, leaving both Stephen Kelly and John Pantsil on the bench. Baird moved to a central midfield role when Danny Murphy was forced off through injury with Kelly introduced at the back. Baird may now be set for a run of starts – he is available for 4.7 in the Fantasy Premier League game.

In the same match Gareth Bale was kept in the left midfield role by Harry Redknapp with Benoit Assou-Ekotto starting at full-back. Redknapp shuffled his pack with Roman Pavlyuchenko and Sandro both starting, ousting Peter Crouch and Jermaine Jenas to the bench. Rafael Van der Vaart was again played up in support of the lone striker and was once again prominent, earning two Fantasy Premier League Bonus points. While Bale contributed his several key passes, one of which led to the belated assist for Tom Huddlestone’s goal, he played second fiddle to Van der Vaart in Bonus point terms. The Dutchman made almost 50% more passes and fired in 3 efforts on goal; Bale failed to register a single effort on Schwarzer’s goal.

Charles N’Zogbia will have soared up many a watchlist as result of his brace at Newcastle. The inevitable 3 point FPL Bonus also gave him returns in that area for a third consecutive match, confirming that his Bonus magnet from last season is well truly operational. Priced at just 5.4 in the Fantasy Premier League game following a drop from 6.0, he appears to present superb value. Fixtures over the next three could be a lot worse (BOL ful bla) which will only promote his bandwagon further.

Steve Gohouri suffered an injury in training on Friday and that saw him miss Wigan’s trip to Newcastle with Steven Caldwell starting in central defence. Antolin Alcaraz recovered from his own injury to start against the Magpies. It was interesting that Martinez chose to drop Rodallega to the bench with Ronnie Stam starting on the right of midfield in his place. With Rodallega out of the side, N’Zogbia’s FPL Bonus prospects look even stronger.

Andy Carroll missed a sitter late on and earned a booking but did come away with the assist for the late equaliser from Fabricio Collicini. Carroll was heavily involved however and may need Hughton to have the conviction to move to a 4-4-2 to unlock his true Fantasy potential. The Newcastle boss chose to start Peter Lovenkrands, rather than Shola Ameobi, in place of skipper Kevin Nolan who was injured in training on Friday. Ameobi’s goal may see him alongside Carroll against West Ham and Sunderland over the next two Gameweeks.

Marouane Chamakh rewarded those Fantasy Managers who had kept the faith with his biggest points haul of the season. Chamakh’s dubious assist for Arsenal’s opening penalty was boosted by a third goal of the season and a 2 point Bonus. That performance was timely given the threat now posed by a fit-again Nicklas Bendtner. It remains to be seen just how Arsene Wenger will juggle these two but with Robin Van Persie also due back in early November, it’s clear that Chamakh is in danger of losing pitch time – unfortunate considering Arsenal have two decent home games (WHM NEW) to follow the trip to City in Gameweek 9.

Ryan Giggs suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of the win over West Brom and will now be out for an “extended period”. That’s bad news for Alex Ferguson who has problems on the left of midfield with Ji Sung Park missing out this weekend with a knee injury. This could open the way for some “out of position” or bargain Fantasy potential within the United midfield. If Park is unable to return then Ferguson will either need to play without a natural wide player or start with Gabriel Obertan (4.5 Midfielder) or Bebe (5.5 Forward). He could even consider pushing Patrice Evra forward and starting O’Shea at left-back with Rafael remaining on the right. Clearly the situation on United’s left needs monitoring.

Bolton’s 2-1 win over Stoke saw Kevin Davies amongst the FPL Bonus for the fourth time this season, the 3 points giving him his third maximum haul. Our Members can get a view on just how Davies earns this recognition by analysing his Distribution and Influence statistics and it’s clear that, when Bolton prevail, Davies will likely be amongst the points. With fixtures continuing to look decent for Owen Coyle’s men (wig LIV TOT), we should see more profit for recent England call-up.

Martin Petrov’s starting role could be under threat however, Coyle would not have been happy with the careless flick that led to the corner for Rory Delap’s goal. Petrov was subbed on 64 minutes and Matt Taylor may be on the verge of a first start on the left of midfield very soon.

Gerard Houllier started the Chelsea game with Ashley Young on the left flank and Stewart Downing on the right, with Stephen Ireland bombing forward to support John Carew in attack. The shuffle was prompted by the absence of Marc Albrighton through illness and must put further doubt on the young winger’s starting role. Ireland is clearly suited to the role “in the hole” and Houllier will also have Gabby Agbonlahor fit as an option soon, allowing him to move to a 4-4-2. It looks likely that Young will end back in a wide role, casting real doubt over Albrighton’s security as a budget Fantasy signing.

Everton’s fine 2-0 win over Liverpool continued their change in fortunes. They’ve now kept three consecutive clean sheets which will surely start to earn their key defenders – Leighton Baines, Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka, some increased Fantasy recognition. Following a trip to Spurs, Everton a decent run of games on which to build on their current form (STK blp BOL).

Seamus Coleman is perhaps the key target right now. He put in a strong performance on the right of Everton’s midfield, surely cementing his starting role in this position for the foreseeable future. As we’ve mentioned in several articles of late, Coleman is classed as a 4.4 Defender, and his showing in the derby match will see him enjoy a big rise in our Watchlist rankings as he becomes a hot-property for Fantasy Managers, regardless of the fact that Everton travel to White Hart Lane next. With clean sheets so hard to come by, a 4.4 defender playing in a right-wing role for a side showing decent defensive form, is clearly an offer that’s hard to refuse.

Mikel Arteta’s fine second-half strike also promoted his stock. That was his second goal of what has been a quiet Fantasy season so far and surprisingly the Spaniard saw no FPL Bonus return with Distin and Tim Cahill hogging those. Both Arteta and Cahill are now firmly in the top 10 midfielders in the FPL – not bad considering neither have been recognised as key Fantasy signings to this point. Arteta suffered a knock late on and was replaced – that obviously requires monitoring.

Injuries to the Toure brothers saw Roberto Mancini shift to a 4-4-2, drafting in Emmanuel Adebayor alongside Carlos Tevez. The brief “experiment” failed to convince. City were undoubtedly second best until the introduction of David Silva for Adebayor which saw a shift in the system and the ignition of City of Tevez in particular. His brace of goals in the 3-2 win took him top of the goalscoring charts and has him trailing Didier Drogba by just 6 points. Tevez has scored goals in his last four starts for City and has brought in 8 Bonus Points in that spell. For many Fantasy Managers, those stats and his form will have him rank as the “essential” striker behind Drogba. Juggling that pair with a the array of high-scoring midfield assets is the the dilemma for Fantasy Managers now.

David Silva’s showing will raise his profile and hand Mancini further selection headaches going forward. His goal oozed classed and there’s no doubt that he is tuned into the Tevez wavelength. Fantasy Managers just have too many attractive options right now but Silva’s progress needs tracking – particular by those who are unable to draft in team-mate Tevez.

Charlie Adam brought in 2 more FPL Bonus Points – despite the defeat to City. He has now gathered more Bonus than any other midfielder and, having also notched an assist for Harewood’s goal, his returns remain strong and well worth the current 5.3 price tag. Charles N’Zogbia’s emergence this weekend may see him share investment with the Wigan man, but with decent fixtures to come (bir WBA EVE avl whm WOL bol), Adam will surely go on returning points and attracting new suitors.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    I have 8 transfers I'd like to make - any advice over what period I should do them? Transfers are

    Jaask -> Gilks
    Alex -> Mummy
    Foley -> Coleman
    Etherington -> Arteta
    Bale -> VDV
    Nolan -> Fabs
    Rooney -> Berbs
    Carroll -> Varney

    Would leave a team of the below (likely subs in brackets)

    Foster, (Gilks)
    Mummy, Coleman, P Jones, (Williamson), (Jara)
    Fabregas, Arteta, Nani, Malouda, VDV
    Tevez, Berbatov, (Varney)

      United's line up is far from certain on Wednesday night so I would not include Berbatov or Nani in there, it is hard to look beyond Messi or Villa with their fixture at home to Kobenhaven, so Villa/Messi out of that lot

    Cheers for the help back a few pages,

    looking at it, you are right hunter, the only options are blackpool and manchester city

    So any ideas on reliable websites to try and get tickets from or is it only the official ticket offices that are worth looking at?

    So, relative success with WC this week, made a mistake on Rooney (I know, but it was fun before I saw him on the bench), am tempted to hold off on move this week depending on whether we see Mr Rooney tog out on Wednesday night, if he plays, I would be tempted to leave him in this week and see/hope if he starts at Stoke, if not, what move would people suggest?

      dunno, i think hes been rested against everton for his own sake

      and now west brom ,as they didnt think they would need him and he was out of form,

      lets b honest the man is talented, fergie was being a little bit cheeky, he thought his second strike force would walk over them and they should have in the first half. but when the going got tough he brought rooney on

      rooney will start against stoke for me

        wouldn't be so sure with all this speculation, I think he needs to start on Wedneday night to give him a chance to get off the mark from open play. Alot will depend on SAF's team selection on Wednesday I believe, agree with DB, Drogba looks like the best move this week but will eat into my "Cesc money"

        Fergie wasnt being cheeky.

        He was fed up of Rooney's attitude so he dropped him and made up an injury.

        It wasnt anything to do with underestimating WBA

        Even if it was Chelsea at the Weekend I reckon he would have left Rooney on the bench.

          all this speculation is blown completely out of proportion, rooney is going nowhere in january
          He is uniteds best player, dont let form cloud that
          if it was chelsea, the only way he would have left him on the bench was playing a 5 man midfield.

          it was an easy decision to drop him for wba, it gets a lot harder to do it twice in a row , especially with the speculation surrounding it now.

          but i do agree, drogba against wolves, lovely little captain there

          all i am saying is rooney cant and wont be left out of the fold too long!

    Can anyone explain why it is that clubs don't invest £25 each per member of staff on flu jabs? Every year huge numbers of players miss weeks with flu, with some games being called off (which must cost bundles)

    Like a few people who have posted here today, so far I have not taken any point hits, but am considering taking a -8 this week. Planning Sagna > Jara, A. Johnson > N'Zog and Chamakh > Tevez

    This leaves me no Arsenal cover this week, but was thinking Alex (unsure how much he'll play now Bosingwa back and Ivanovic playing well as CB) for Coleman to free cash for Etherington for Nasri (poor mans Fabregas)?

    Comments or suggestions for alternative changes would be welcome?

      8 point hits are big hits. The only one I'd suggest is Alex to Coleman, but would wait until after Tottenham away.

        Again, they're away to Tottenham this weekend, so why would you bring him in if he's going to concede? Unless you can only put 10 out.

        More importantly I don't think they want him at the prize they'd have to pay?

        Who would Rooney oust from the current Barca side? He'd probably sell lots of shirts and make them an even more popular club, but I don't see how he would improve the side in other ways than giving them depth.

            Rooney wont play in any other country, he really is a home boy. So which other clubs would he go to? It's all just a load of paper talk and no matter how bored you are, you shouldn't fall into the trap.

              Every paper is reporting it though. it's pretty clear that Wayne's agent has been a busy boy this week.

              This is a post from Sean Ingle (guardian.co.uk's sports editor):

              "I think you'll find this isn't the media driving this story, but Rooney. With a strong nod from the player/his representatives this story wouldn't be over the front and back pages ..."

                  hmmm I don't know, I think you could make a good case both ways.

                  Without Rooney, who have they got going forward who'd be in the same class as someone like Drogba, Malouda, Van Persie, Fabregas or even Tevez?

                Every paper is reporting it because it's United and it's Rooney. I'm just reading the mirror online now and they are reporting things as if they have been in the same room with SAF and Rooney. That's the quality of reporting we're talking about here.
                This is the same man who put an arm around Cantona and Ronaldo. Think about it, it's completely unfeasible that either United or Rooney would want to part company at any time in the near future.

                  I hope you are right Granville, I don't see the sense in it either, but it's easy to forget that Rooney is 24, and probably slightly retarded, wouldn't surprise me if his agent is behind everything here. Rooney is low on confidence and being kicked around the media, and at home, he has created the problem to be fair, but I am not sure Wayne Rooney knows what Wayne Rooney wants at this stage

            Fabregas will go to Barca its just a question of when. Cant see Rooney ever goin to Barca if he were to leave for abroad i could only imagine him at Real as Jose is a big admirer and they are in the market for a striker. Surely this will all blow over and I cant imagine SAF letting him go to City or Chelsea.

    this week

    scholes to nzog
    van damme to bosingwa

    next week

    malouda to fabs
    figueroa to simpson

    thoughts? and feel free not to comment on my captaining of scholes, gut instinct certianly let me down this time!!!

    My injury list this season (and desperate attempt for sympathy):

    Injured:
    Harper, Dawson, J Thomas, Koncheski, Fabregas, Drogba, Etuhu, Toure, Arteta?

    3 match ban:
    Jaask

    Unexpectedly dropped:
    A Johnson

    Unexpectedly benched:
    Malouda, Alex, Carroll, Fabregas

    Imprisoned:
    Carroll?

    Is it just me or is that utterly horrendous?

You should join alright... one of the few leagues I'm in where he actually has the money received to pay the manager of the month. None of this "honour system" crap! €500 for the overall winner too...

    i can't see the tweets so i will post this anyway, even if the tweets render it useless.
    drogba and alex aren't in the chelsea squad for tommorow. although both a pretty much back to full fitness it was seen as a needless risk after his virus to take drogba to a freezing moscow, and also a needless risk to play alex on the plastic pitch. but kalou does travel and is ready to start if needed.

    So was looking through my history and seems my captain has done something everyone of the 8 weeks so far which is pretty good & Lucky.

    My 8 week total is
    16, 26, 18, 22, 20, 18, 12, 24 = 156 .

    Average of 19. 5 points a week so far from my (C).

    Drogba, Tevez & Fabregas all are essential.

    For those who are interested, here is my new, about to be, wildcard team:

    Al-Habsi / Krul
    Elmo / Alex / Simpson / Gohouri / Coleman
    Nani / Malouda / Fabregas / VDV / Albrighton
    Drogba / Tevez / Varney (potentially Ameobi)

    Two things are holding me back -
    1) It seems a bit reckless to use a Wildcard this early
    2) Lampard might bite me in the @rse.

      varney has massively surprised me so far. he's got pace to burn.
      midfield and attack is humpalicious, not so sure about the defence. it is very possible in any given gw that alex, gohouri and coleman will all be on the bench for their clubs.

        Yeah the return of Bosingwa worries me, but I just think Alex has done enough surely to keep his CB place. I might downgrade him back to Samba then spread the money around a little more evenly but that means missing out on a Chelsea defender. Coleman and Gohouri are certainly worrying, though in the short term I can see Coleman doing reasonably well and getting the odd price rise allowing me to trade him for a 4.5'er

            The only Sunderland player apart from Elmo I would want is Bent - and I can live without him having Drogba and Tevez
            Wolves dont have ANY good fixtures - they are going to struggle all year
            Man U I still have Nani, so I'm happy enough with that as the rest are so inconsistent at the moment.
            Chelsea will do well against practically anyone, I only have VdV from Spurs and I think he will do well more often than not. The three Newcastle players will be benched on their tough matches - or I may swap Krul for Mignolet in the hope he keeps his position.

              I think Newcastle's games are terrible from GW14 - GW21, you can't bench three Newcastle players throughout that period so use your wildcard then, in order to sell them all.

              I don't see the problem of getting in a Wolves midfielder for GW13 - GW19, if Wolves are going to pick up any points at all this season, it will be during this stretch that they do it.

                Well, easy peasy Mignolet comes in for Krul and I can imagine Simpson's price rising to 4 before too long as everyone will want a 3.9 defender so when that happens I'll trade him out 🙂

                  Up to you man, but your wildcard smells a bit like reacting to the last gameweek or two. It's surely better to use it when you need to ship a 4/5 players out due to bad fixtures coming up, and bringing in 4/5 players that have good fixtures.

                  Just get in Tevez for now, you don't need to worry about all the other changes.

              Having Drogba and Malouda etc it is not good if they win 2-1 or 2-0 etc, you need loads of goals from both.

              Chelsea as a team, will still get results in these fixtures, but can you see both Malouda and Drogba getting mammoth scores away at Birmingham for example?

              For 10.4M and 13.1M, you need these boys to be playing in whippings like the first 5 fixtures of the season, not sharing the points with Lampard in a 2-0 win.

                  Sharing points with Lampard...

                  Frank will be back, and Anelka and Kalou might score too.

                  Malouda has had one good score in the last 5 matches.

                  The fact is that Malouda and Drogba won't get as many points from GW14 - GW19, and I don't think they will get enough to justify their value. At least one is being sold in my GW14 wildcard.

                  They aren't going to win 4-0 every game, but they will score more goals than anyone else this season so having two of their major attacking players is a necessity in my opinion

                    10.4 + 13.1 = 23.5M tied up in fixtures where their output is good but not great.

                    Why not just keep one of those to cover yourself, and re-invest the money gained from the other to buy a different big-gun with better fixtures.

                    You can then use your January wild card to get Mal and Drogs back in

      Wasn't it mentioned on here that Gohouri might lose his place to Caldwell returning?

      Albrighton's days may be numbered, I know he was sick for the match at the weekend, but I brought him in on WC last week and am regretting it slightly already, if Ireland put in any bit of a performance, and considering that he was a big signing for the club, Albrighton's days could be numbered, particularly when Agbonthewhore is coming back too.

      I think one of Drogba or Malouda is enough now, and I think with Drog on set pieces he shades it for me, downgrade Malouda to Arteta (if passed fit this week) and use cash to upgrade Varney to Carroll/Elhmander etc

      Nice team other than that

      i used my wild card first week and am currently top 15,000

      imo better to use early and get good players while they are cheap- an dyou get another one in jan so there's a buffer.

      I am sticking to a max 4 point hit each week and is working well so far.

      Like your team- but would get bosingwa while he's cheap if you can.

      Lamps can wait- but think you'll need to engineer both him and fabs in there at some point.

      I am considering dropping drog maybe for van p at a later date

      Looks nice Attila, though would Ameobi let you do Albrighton -> Adam?

      I wouldn't worry about Lamps, if he comes back and starts stealing Malouda's points, it should only be 2 transfers to get him in. In terms of timing, I don't think there's ever a right or wrong time. The next 2 week gap is what, end of Feb? Obviously no point waiting for that. Just use it when you think is best.

      Thanks for the pointers all. Maybe a risky move, but short term I may replace Alex with Bosingwa allowing me to upgrade elsewhere with either Gohouri or Albrighton the likely change.
      I just think I can't go on blithely ignoring Tevez, I'm still winning my private league but the people behind are catching up quickly thanks to him. Plus if I wait any longer I probably couldn't afford this side as Tevez etc are bound to increase in price. Doesn't feel right using the Wildcard just yet but ignoring Tevez has cost me red arrows for the last three GW.

        Ok does this look any better?
        Al-Habsi / Krul
        Elmo / Bosingwa / Simpson / P.Jones / Jara
        Nani / Malouda / Fabregas / VdV / Adam
        Drogba / Tevez / Ameobi

              hmmm i liked the other one with coleman and alex. just would have swapped gohouri for a 4mil defender who will start. and besides i think al habsi and gohouri is too much latic in the attic.

          My suggestion would be Bramble rather than Elmohamady - I'm sure you'll hate it, but I have researched it. Also, Iwould not have Jara in my team, even at gunpoint ...

            Bramble? BRAMBLE?! *vomits blood* Never! I am a Newcastle fan you know? I have seen what Titus can do?! Naah he's not that bad but why swap a Sunderland 'defender' with attacking potential for one with none?

              Because, in my researched opinion, his attacking potential is a myth. It is true that he is king of the clouds, but that is more likely to benefit Bent or Henderson than himself ...

                But still he has SOME attacking potential, Bramble has ZERO. Plus he has potential for Bp (see last week) again Bramble has zero. Between an OOP defender and a defender I'll go with the former every time.

                  agree with merrymichael the wine guru on this one. bramble is a decent goal threat, assured a start and always good for a few bps.

                    To counter that, I went with Mignolet and Krul. Their fixtures are good... and yes Gordon may be back soon but only 0.5m extra for a good gk with a team not conceding much!

              Secondly, Bramble has shown that he can score a goal or two, and offer an assist - this, Steve Bruce will encourage, imo ...

      Damn, I'm to late to tell you that no one is interested.... Would be a massive fail saying it now after getting so many replies...

      Good team, apart from the ringer up front. You serious about Ameobi? Won't he be back on the bench if you play 4-5-1? Just talk to me about the Carroll/Ameobi situation in general, I'm intrigued....

        Hard to know given today's events. He has been warned numerous times about his off-field antics maybe now he will pay the price.
        In terms of potential as a player then Carroll is better than Ameobi, but watching him again against Wigan is just sooooo frickin frustrating. He is just a fraction too slow to score more than 10-15 goals per season, he kept NEARLY getting on the end of some great balls into the area. I think Ameobi has played well (and scored) when he has been used this season, I think in light of Carroll being a shitehawk off the pitch there is every chance that Ameobi will be given the main striking role. However the fans at SJP appear to be so caught up in the idea of a local boy wearing the Number 9 again that it may keep him in the side longer than is wise.
