Im Not Marshal Foch Im Not Marshal Foch

If ever a game summed up a player, surely Sunday’s match between West Brom and Manchester City showed us all the two sides of City’s prodigious striker Mario Balotelli. The Italian rewarded the faith of his manager with two goals in six minutes in only his second start in the Premier League. Unfortunately for Mancini, Balotelli made the transformation from hero to villain with a straight red card in the second-half for a reckless kick during a tangle with Youssouf Mulumbu.

Todays dismissal highlighted Balotelli’s addiction to controversy and for Fantasy Football Managers was the equivalent of an espresso at the end of a drunken meal. Certainly it would have made many managers wary of bringing in a striker who, whilst has obvious talent, still has a hot headed fieriness. Temperamental players are the last thing the majority of Fantasy Football managers want or need.

This game and the display of Balotelli served to ease the pressure which had been building on manager Roberto Mancini who has been looking to stop a run in which had City lost their last three games. Mancini was clearly happy with his strikers performance;

“For me, Mario Balotelli played very well. The referee should not have given a red card, absolutely not. It’s possible we may appeal.”

That will be promising to the ears of those who are looking to bring in the fiery Italian. However it is worth remembering that frivolous appeals can often lead to extended cautions so City, and FPL’s finest will need to tread carefully.

The inclusion of the Italian saw James Milner dropped to the bench and increased the rotation risk around the Manchester City team. From an attacking perspective it is nearly impossible to determine the line-up for the Citizens and going forward investment in Manchester City midfielders and attackers, bar talismanic captain Carlos Tevez, is becoming more of a minefield. Caution and patience is recommended.

Unfortunately this is not something that 1,282 managers displayed this afternoon. That is the amount (and rising at time of writing) who knee-jerkingly transferred in Balotelli today. A large number of those did so during the game. If ever there was a test case in why you shouldn’t do your transfers early then this was it.

-Elsewhere Liverpool overcame champions Chelsea with a first half performance from Fernando Torres which reminded us all why he is so revered throughout the world. Two goals, the second a sublime curling effort, proved too much for Chelsea at Anfield and served to open up the title race. It also exposed how Chelsea struggle without their big hitters Lampard, Essien and Drogba. It was no coincidence that their performance improved in the second half with the introduction of the Ivorian, but for those who have the big striker in their team, a single point was a disappointing return.

Overall this week served up its fair share of headaches, underperformance of key players and low scores across the board. Thankfully we only have two days before the next Gameweek comes along.

me neither, which is perhaps setting me up for egg on my face, but the reports on the man city website seem to make it pretty clear silva played in balotelli over the top and he did the rest. not even a mention of yaya

          The Guardian says:

"Balotelli, showing great upper-body strength, then held off Gabriel Tamas to control David Silva's through-ball and score the second with a shot on the turn from just inside the penalty area."

So fingers crossed on the Silva assist being given.

just sent my first ever email to fpl towers. next thing you know kygiakos' will be mistaken for Ryan Babel!

Hi, I'm sure I'm not alone brining up this issue, but you never know so here goes. It seems the press association have managed to get 6ft 2 Ivorian Yaya Toure mixed up with 5ft 7 Spaniard David Silva (or sexy little chipmunk) as my sister calls him. In doing so the assist for Man City's second goal today was given to Yaya Toure for a pass David Silva made. This error has filtered through onto FPL unfortunately. Had it been John, of Jedward fame, who made the delicious pass over the top of the West Brom defence, and the press association gave the assist to Edward I could understand the mistaken identity. These two ludicrously paid individuals however are easier to tell apart.
Thanks for your time, and keep up the good work.

the debateable issue about the assist was whether balotelli loses possession of the ball or not in turning tamas, throwing an uninvolved yaya toure into the mix was baffling

He didn't lose possession though did he? His first touch was possibly not quite as he meant it (amazing if he did) but Tamas never got a touch. It's sure to be given to Silva.

my midfield next week: gerrard, milijas, silva, arteta, n'zogbia. copywrited. as soon as nani is back he's in for arteta. andy's post about arteta being an 8.2mil charlie adam was a much needed wake up call.

          +1

Arteta is still around the top10 in for midfielders even though him and Everton have had a slow start (although they've picked up recently). Blackpool (and Adam) will probably struggle in the second half of the season whereas you only expect Everton to get stronger. I know Adam has racked up the points so far but do you really think it will continue??

if arteta had adam's 3 penalties and adam had arteta's 0 then arteta could be 15 points + possible 0-9 bonus better off whilst adam was that much worse off. so in that respect there is a lot of luck involved. i'm hanging onto arteta for now but am coming round to the idea that there is better value elsewhere.

Wasn't that only when he wasn't on the pitch. I don't remember him missing one recently when he has taken them, so I don't see why he'd lose them to anyone else.

Do you reckon Drogs will keep pens from Lamps when he returns? He's a better corner kick, free-kick and penalty taker (although Lamps isn't far behind on the pens front) and surely Carlo must have noticed this. I suppose it's a bit of a waste not having Drogs in the box for corners though.

I'm pretty sure that Saha took one when Arteta was on the pitch at the end of last season, although I think he missed!

I'd be surprised if Lampard isn't on penalties anymore, but only because he's Lampard. Drogba is a better penalty taker than him, but I doubt that will mean he takes them.

Penalty to Everton coming up midweek 😉

        Ps

Dont have it in for Chelsea defence. They are decent overall. But Terry is grossly overated by the masses he is average at best and probably the 3rd best at the club presently and 4th best last year.

Alex is ok buy overated by you 😉

Neither are world class. Which they dont have to be in 99% of games due to Chelsea excellent ball retention and Essien,

They are decent but poor in real terms compared with how many view them.

I wouldnt probably have Terry in leagues top 10

            Let me see....

Alex, Vidic, Rio, Jagielka, Ivanovic, Carragher, Dawson, Kompany, Toure, Dunne,

Richard Dunne is so much better than John Terry.
Ive had the pleasure (!) of watching him play for us for years .

He has been immense and never ever lost one battle with any forward. None of your messing up like JT does on the big stage.

Sure Dunne has scored the a good few OGs but as a pure defender he is excellent.

Put it this way, Id probably have him above Roy Keane on my best Players for Ireland Ive seen, ...and Im not exactly anti United as you know 😉

He is grossly underated in Engerland.

                Why Dunne?!

I bet Dbronaldo thinks that Dunne is brilliant for the exact same reasons that he think Terry is shit.

Seriously go watch any and I mean any game he has played for Ireland and pretty much Villa in the last 2-3 years.

Dunne is everything Terry isnt. Tough in fair way, Honest, Brave, doesnt hog the limeligth in order to make up for short comings on field.

Man I hate Terry and the media love in for him.
His true ability to defend is do far away from media make him out to be.

Is there really a media love in for Terry?! If there is then it isn't nearly as bad as it is for other England internationals...

As for Dunne, don't most Villa fans think that he should be dropped?

Well thats 5, 5!!! we agree on in just England and people claim he is world class 😀

Let me think of the 5th best Leftback in the league...

                Leighton Baines is world class....

Id bet that will be a headline once he has an affair or two 😉

Cole, Evra, Kolarov (apparently), Baines are probably the best four.

i'll give you vidic, only because i think he's as good as terry, i seem to remember mr torres giving vidic a couple of hard times too...
rio not since he was last fully fit.
alex, terry is a better reader of the game and a better passer imo.
              jagielka is basically john terry
dawson is a budget terry, same attributes, just not as good at them.
kompany, potentially brilliant, still a bit raw decision making wise at times
carragher retired because terry rightly kept him out the england team
toure has pace over terry, terry has every other attribute over toure and then some.
dunne is a classic lescott syndrome sufferer form last year. man city ditching him whilst bending over backwards to try and get terry sums that one up.
terry is class, regardless of captaincy or not you don't cement a place in the chelsea and england team for thast long winning silly amounts of personal awards along the way without being a top top defender. the fact he lacks a bit of pace just shows how brilliant a brain (football wise obviously) he has on him

Apple I just dont see it mate.

Ive been watching Terry for years now.
There are so many defenders who do a decent shift dont hog the limelight and never make the mistakes he does.

He was comical last year all the way through and the World cup wsa just a farce which he played a massive part in.

I think you guys (Eng) have far better players playing in smaller clubs.
                Jagielka for one.

along with ashley cole he was england's only good player in the world cup until that germany game. his 'bad form last season consisted of saha raping him for 90 mins in the 2-1 loss at everton, and eto'o getting the better of him, hardly a crime. why would the english media try and make terry's performances seem worse than they really were last year? hmmm what happened last year which a dip in form would make for a better story?

                  Comical last year?!

He was the only ever present in defence for a side that eventually cruised to the title. Sure he made a couple of errors, which the media made a fuss about because they were around the time of the affair, but who doesn't?

Jagielka is not far better than Terry, and he's the only one that even compares to Terry.*

*King and Ferdinand don't count because they're perma-crocks.

                  Apple

Just cos he was England second best player is nothing to write home about. You obviously like him as he plays for your country but there would have been alot of players in smaller nations with less exposure who didnt balls up with push came to shove.

The fact you added to the world cup as a plus for him shows he actualy doesnt seem to need to do anything to get credit.
There were probably 20 better players in the world cup based solely on peformance than JT. But JT plays for England which get massive coverage beyond the UK and 95% of supporters done even watch a game fully.

You could ask 1000 people around the world who had a better world cup Alcarez or Terry and you'd be hard pushed to get 5 votes for Alcarez.

                  His profile helps him immensely.

i couldn't give a toss about his profile, if he's english, what toothpaste he uses, how many under age girls he's sleeping with, how much coke his dad is dealing, how much shoplifting his mum is doing etc. all i care about is what matters and that's how he performs on the pitch. you brought the world cup up so i thought i'd defend him, seeing as england didn't concede a goal (i'm not counting the dempsey goal) until the germany game. even in the germany game the likes of pique, carvalho etc didn't have upson alongside them, and a half fit barry screening them, plus had to play a one off game on the right side of centre back (terry always plays left centre back). which defender isn't going to struggle being left almost alone with a rampaging ozil, klose, and muller running at them?
you are good at baiting me with this arguement as i can never let it slide.

Just looking up on the leading goal scorer in EPL.
Found some interesting stats about when they score for people who like a bet.

    Player 1st Half/2nd Half
    Malouda 6/1
    Tevez 2/5
    Nolan 5/2
    Bent & Berbatov 2/4
    Kalou 2/3
    Elmander & Carroll 1/4
    Dempsey & Walcott 3/1
Cahill, Nasri, VDV & Nani 2/2

Plenty of Home/Away Goals & 1st & Last scorer too. Interesting stuff for your bench options.

Hows this for the next GW?

    Al-Habsi

    Jagielka, Bosingwa, Simpson

    Arteta, Fabregas, Barton, Nasri

    Tevez, Drogba, Yakubu

No United players which is a little bit of a risk but happy to be without any of 'em until GW14. The two transfers (4 point hit) are
    Adam out Barton in
    Berbatov out Tevez in

Any good? I fancy an Arsenal backlash against Wolves

For the next two GW though Blackpool have avl and whm I think they will lose both of those. Arsenal have wol and eve, I'll bin Nasri for the eve game and possibly look to bring in Essien/N'Zogbia or something.
Unless of course he will be rested V Wolves, then he's out on his arse.

nolans the main set piece boy

He really isn't Jafstar. Barton takes all freekicks and corners and Ameobi penalties. United will have a tough time beating City and I think Tevez will be back to haunt them.

i didnt say united are gona rape city

i said dont be surprised if they get a result and with berba leading the line with hernandez he may very well get points

Berba has done sweet naff all for too long for me, I was lucky in getting him in for his hattrick but now he's just overpriced litter. Patience gone I'm afraid.

I think Barton is the better long term pick. Nolan is Rob Lee II

Anybody thinking towards west ham forwards? Two good fixtures coming along. Is Piquionne or Cole worth considering?

I wish you could only play 2 defenders as i would drop O'Shea.

But out of my front seven then Adam is the one i may drop out for Albrighton.

        Adam Fabregas Bale Arteta

Team in link except take Shawx out for Coleman. I've 1.1m in the bank and thinking of getting rid of Chamakh or Nasri. Which one and for who? Why did Nasri come off?

nasri came off cz hes pants..plus he seemd to pick up a bit of a knock earlier on when he took his shoe and shinpads off

id get rid of chamakh...merely because hes done nothing and RVP looks more likely to step in

Great decision making in the last couple of weeks.
    GW10: Dempsey>Fabs (-4)
    GW11: Vaughan>Brunt(-4)

Those two moves did cost me 34 points, love this game 🙂
