Im Not Marshal Foch Im Not Marshal Foch
Share:

If ever a game summed up a player, surely Sunday’s match between West Brom and Manchester City showed us all the two sides of City’s prodigious striker Mario Balotelli. The Italian rewarded the faith of his manager with two goals in six minutes in only his second start in the Premier League. Unfortunately for Mancini, Balotelli made the transformation from hero to villain with a straight red card in the second-half for a reckless kick during a tangle with Youssouf Mulumbu.

Todays dismissal highlighted Balotelli’s addiction to controversy and for Fantasy Football Managers was the equivalent of an espresso at the end of a drunken meal. Certainly it would have made many managers wary of bringing in a striker who, whilst has obvious talent, still has a hot headed fieriness. Temperamental players are the last thing the majority of Fantasy Football managers want or need.

This game and the display of Balotelli served to ease the pressure which had been building on manager Roberto Mancini who has been looking to stop a run in which had City lost their last three games. Mancini was clearly happy with his strikers performance;

“For me, Mario Balotelli played very well. The referee should not have given a red card, absolutely not. It’s possible we may appeal.”

That will be promising to the ears of those who are looking to bring in the fiery Italian. However it is worth remembering that frivolous appeals can often lead to extended cautions so City, and FPL’s finest will need to tread carefully.

The inclusion of the Italian saw James Milner dropped to the bench and increased the rotation risk around the Manchester City team. From an attacking perspective it is nearly impossible to determine the line-up for the Citizens and going forward investment in Manchester City midfielders and attackers, bar talismanic captain Carlos Tevez, is becoming more of a minefield. Caution and patience is recommended.

Unfortunately this is not something that 1,282 managers displayed this afternoon. That is the amount (and rising at time of writing) who knee-jerkingly transferred in Balotelli today. A large number of those did so during the game. If ever there was a test case in why you shouldn’t do your transfers early then this was it.

-Elsewhere Liverpool overcame champions Chelsea with a first half performance from Fernando Torres which reminded us all why he is so revered throughout the world. Two goals, the second a sublime curling effort, proved too much for Chelsea at Anfield and served to open up the title race. It also exposed how Chelsea struggle without their big hitters Lampard, Essien and Drogba. It was no coincidence that their performance improved in the second half with the introduction of the Ivorian, but for those who have the big striker in their team, a single point was a disappointing return.

Overall this week served up its fair share of headaches, underperformance of key players and low scores across the board. Thankfully we only have two days before the next Gameweek comes along.

I've made a bit of $$$$$$$ on him though.....

I still don't think that it was a bad transfer... I needed to downgrade Tevez anyway to afford some of the midpriced midfielders that have been killing me. Hopefully Tevez doesn't go mental over the next few weeks..

Doubt many people would have predicted him to fire blanks against Spurs and Wolves.

I am the master of disguise.

The defence wasn't the problem today, not at all, and the two goals came from pretty much nothing, although it was mainly Terry at fault for the first goal.

The problem was the midfield, and the inability to keep possession in the first half. Which is hardly surprising because we were relying on Ramires and Zhirkov to create anything from the middle of the pitch.

DB has had it in for the Chelsea defence all season, which is astonishing given how prior to today we'd only conceded three goals this season, two of which were pretty lucky.

P.S. Kalou is wank. I hate him. I can't understand why 4 managers have managed Chelsea and not one of them has realised how shit he is.

Or perhaps they are just scared of getting rid of him because it would annoying Drogba...

Drogba f*cking loves Kalou, along with just about every other African player in the world. It's actually quite annoying that... When we are playing against a side with a relatively high profile African player in it, Drogba spends the majority of the game being all chummy with him.

spot on imo. although yes terry could have done better for the first but when kuyt's pass is that perfect and torres is so quick off the mark there will be problems for any defender.
apart from that i don't see what else alex and terry could have done, although alex distribution wise alex did a couple of mis-hit clearances. ivanovic should have showed torres down the line for the second, especially as it would be sending him onto his left too!
liverpool seemed to target ramires especially in the first half. it's as if they said this is the new guy lets get in his face every time he gets the ball, and it worked.
i like kalou the same way as i like walcott, as an impact sub or a player to play at home against the poor teams.

Ramires' first touch is so poor that his second is most often a 50/50 tackle with an opposition player! Although I'm prepared to give him time after dominate the Arsenal midfield for the last 70 minutes, after a shaky first 20.

Although having Zhirkov in the midfield trio allows us to pepper the opposition right back (Kelly was excellent today btw, Johnson shouldn't walk back into the side) he offers very little other than that. He's an odd player because he never really seems to get involved with the game, which isn't a great characteristic when you're meant to be playing in the middle of midfield.

If Essien had been playing it would have been a totally different game, and part of the blame has to lie with Ancelotti for playing him against Wolves and against Spartak (on the dreaded plastic pitch!) when it was clear for all to see that he wasn't 100% fit.

Malouda was our brightest player throughout the match, and Anelka was better out on the right after Drogba came on, but the first half was so terrible that no matter how well we played in the second - and I genuinely did think that we were pretty good in the second half - we never really going to get back into the game, especially with how resolute Liverpool were.

It seems as though Hodgson has finally got the message across to the players that they are no longer one of the best sides in the league, and if they want to win games it will more often than not be because they've frustrated the opposition, rather than dominating the game from the start.

agree with the rest btw. it's also interesting how when zhirkov plays he spends half the game almost tucking in for ashley cole while cole plays stupidly far forward. i'd rather a centre mid spent the whole time in and around the middle not making ashley cole's job of attacking a bit easier.

Arshavin actually looked decent when he came on today, which is more than can be said about the majority of his performances this season.

If there is any justice then Walcott will be the one to miss out. He was absolutely awful today.

Players you need out - O'Shea Piquionne Anelka Hughes

Players you need in - Bale or VdV, Odemwingie or Carroll, and a more expensive top class defender such as Cashley or Vidic

    Need some help gents.

    Mignolet - Carson

    Elmohamady - Coleman - Simpson - Vidic - Foley

    Fabregas - VdV - Nani - Barton - Dempsey

    Drogba - Chamakh - Odemwingie

I have enough in the bank to do Chamakh> Tevez, but wanted to get Nani out for someone as he is missing this weeks game and VdV will likely also be out.

    Any suggestions?

How much did you buy Nani for? In any case I wouldn't like to ship him as he is utterly central to anything Utd do and probably won't be out for that long.

Fergie will play him at all possible against City imo; don't listen to the mind-game master's deception!

          No worries bud.

Chamakh to Torres is a solid move, but I think Chamakh to Tevez plus getting to keep Nani and 4 pts is better.

Also, regarding VDV, we should know the Spurs line-up before the GW deadline passes.

Fabregas will come good and Wednesday is as good a spot as any. The return of RVP will help matters as well as the sooner Chamakh is removed from the front-line the better for Arsenal in general.

No point anyone beating themselves over captaining Fabregas this week when the only other teams I saw with alternative captains were Drogba, Nasri, Malouda, Chamakh, Walcott, Hernandez, Bale and Berbatov.

Arteta is still around the top10 in for midfielders even though him and Everton have had a slow start (although they've picked up recently). Blackpool (and Adam) will probably struggle in the second half of the season whereas you only expect Everton to get stronger. I know Adam has racked up the points so far but do you really think it will continue??

if arteta had adam's 3 penalties and adam had arteta's 0 then arteta could be 15 points + possible 0-9 bonus better off whilst adam was that much worse off. so in that respect there is a lot of luck involved. i'm hanging onto arteta for now but am coming round to the idea that there is better value elsewhere.

Wasn't that only when he wasn't on the pitch. I don't remember him missing one recently when he has taken them, so I don't see why he'd lose them to anyone else.

Do you reckon Drogs will keep pens from Lamps when he returns? He's a better corner kick, free-kick and penalty taker (although Lamps isn't far behind on the pens front) and surely Carlo must have noticed this. I suppose it's a bit of a waste not having Drogs in the box for corners though.

I'm pretty sure that Saha took one when Arteta was on the pitch at the end of last season, although I think he missed!

I'd be surprised if Lampard isn't on penalties anymore, but only because he's Lampard. Drogba is a better penalty taker than him, but I doubt that will mean he takes them.

Penalty to Everton coming up midweek 😉

        Ps

Dont have it in for Chelsea defence. They are decent overall. But Terry is grossly overated by the masses he is average at best and probably the 3rd best at the club presently and 4th best last year.

Alex is ok buy overated by you 😉

Neither are world class. Which they dont have to be in 99% of games due to Chelsea excellent ball retention and Essien,

Richard Dunne is so much better than John Terry.
Ive had the pleasure (!) of watching him play for us for years .

He has been immense and never ever lost one battle with any forward. None of your messing up like JT does on the big stage.

Sure Dunne has scored the a good few OGs but as a pure defender he is excellent.

Put it this way, Id probably have him above Roy Keane on my best Players for Ireland Ive seen, ...and Im not exactly anti United as you know 😉

He is grossly underated in Engerland.

I bet Dbronaldo thinks that Dunne is brilliant for the exact same reasons that he think Terry is shit.

Seriously go watch any and I mean any game he has played for Ireland and pretty much Villa in the last 2-3 years.

Dunne is everything Terry isnt. Tough in fair way, Honest, Brave, doesnt hog the limeligth in order to make up for short comings on field.

Man I hate Terry and the media love in for him.
His true ability to defend is do far away from media make him out to be.

Is there really a media love in for Terry?! If there is then it isn't nearly as bad as it is for other England internationals...

As for Dunne, don't most Villa fans think that he should be dropped?

Well thats 5, 5!!! we agree on in just England and people claim he is world class 😀

Let me think of the 5th best Leftback in the league...

                Leighton Baines is world class....

Id bet that will be a headline once he has an affair or two 😉

Cole, Evra, Kolarov (apparently), Baines are probably the best four.

i'll give you vidic, only because i think he's as good as terry, i seem to remember mr torres giving vidic a couple of hard times too...
rio not since he was last fully fit.
alex, terry is a better reader of the game and a better passer imo.
              jagielka is basically john terry
dawson is a budget terry, same attributes, just not as good at them.
kompany, potentially brilliant, still a bit raw decision making wise at times
carragher retired because terry rightly kept him out the england team
toure has pace over terry, terry has every other attribute over toure and then some.
dunne is a classic lescott syndrome sufferer form last year. man city ditching him whilst bending over backwards to try and get terry sums that one up.
terry is class, regardless of captaincy or not you don't cement a place in the chelsea and england team for thast long winning silly amounts of personal awards along the way without being a top top defender. the fact he lacks a bit of pace just shows how brilliant a brain (football wise obviously) he has on him

Apple I just dont see it mate.

Ive been watching Terry for years now.
There are so many defenders who do a decent shift dont hog the limelight and never make the mistakes he does.

He was comical last year all the way through and the World cup wsa just a farce which he played a massive part in.

I think you guys (Eng) have far better players playing in smaller clubs.
                Jagielka for one.

along with ashley cole he was england's only good player in the world cup until that germany game. his 'bad form last season consisted of saha raping him for 90 mins in the 2-1 loss at everton, and eto'o getting the better of him, hardly a crime. why would the english media try and make terry's performances seem worse than they really were last year? hmmm what happened last year which a dip in form would make for a better story?

                  Comical last year?!

He was the only ever present in defence for a side that eventually cruised to the title. Sure he made a couple of errors, which the media made a fuss about because they were around the time of the affair, but who doesn't?

Jagielka is not far better than Terry, and he's the only one that even compares to Terry.*

*King and Ferdinand don't count because they're perma-crocks.

                  Apple

Just cos he was England second best player is nothing to write home about. You obviously like him as he plays for your country but there would have been alot of players in smaller nations with less exposure who didnt balls up with push came to shove.

The fact you added to the world cup as a plus for him shows he actualy doesnt seem to need to do anything to get credit.
There were probably 20 better players in the world cup based solely on peformance than JT. But JT plays for England which get massive coverage beyond the UK and 95% of supporters done even watch a game fully.

You could ask 1000 people around the world who had a better world cup Alcarez or Terry and you'd be hard pushed to get 5 votes for Alcarez.

                  His profile helps him immensely.

i couldn't give a toss about his profile, if he's english, what toothpaste he uses, how many under age girls he's sleeping with, how much coke his dad is dealing, how much shoplifting his mum is doing etc. all i care about is what matters and that's how he performs on the pitch. you brought the world cup up so i thought i'd defend him, seeing as england didn't concede a goal (i'm not counting the dempsey goal) until the germany game. even in the germany game the likes of pique, carvalho etc didn't have upson alongside them, and a half fit barry screening them, plus had to play a one off game on the right side of centre back (terry always plays left centre back). which defender isn't going to struggle being left almost alone with a rampaging ozil, klose, and muller running at them?
you are good at baiting me with this arguement as i can never let it slide.

Hey SD, why was Benjani subbed off so early yesterday?

Heard on the radio, on the way back from seeing Forest Green get hammered, that Benjani was subbed off because he tried something fancy and Allardyce hated it. Although it was Stuart Hall giving the match report on the game, so it's most likely a load of rubbish....

I'd love to have them both but haven't the stones to drop Drogba just yet. He's looked useless in the last 3 games (other than a nice nod down for Anelka) but those 2 home games are too good to ignore.

You don't fancy Liverpool to batter Wigan then? I could see a good 0-3/0-4 scoreline with confidence restored and i think Torres could be worth the extra million. Definitely worth getting a short term poll up on the site though, this question will be asked 100 times before Tuesday night (and probably 100 times already!)

Wigan away from home last year was a horrid evening.

i fancy liverpool at wigan. although he's no essien i think james mccarthy has left a big hole in the heart of the wigan side and fully expect liverpool to do something about that with torres likely to be at the heart of that. plus i don't rate gary caldwell so that will help torres too.

it's more a long term thing. they're both bloody good. torres is better, tevez is luckier 🙂 (another nut-meg assist today) and on pens. so in order to save a mil i'd personally get tevez. BUT if you don't need the 1mil elsewhere i'd actually get torres as he's more of a differential.

    Foster, Krul
    Elmohamady, Konchesky, Dann, Bosingwa, Jara
    Adam, Nasri, Nani, Bale, Cahill
    Drogba, Tevez, Hernandez.

I've used my free transfer to bring Tevez in. There's no point in taking a 4 point hit to bring anyone else in is there? If not, who would you guys bench this week?

I am partial to a bit of Everton over-load myself, with Coleman, Arteta and Yakubu but it has worked out ok over the last two game weeks. Cahill plays pretty much as a forward anyway so decent chances for returns from himself and Arteta at home to Bolton. Not sure I would want to keep both beyond Bolton though particularly if Nani and VDV are back on the scene.

Well I was buying alot of shorter term form players, the big guns haven't been firing as much recently so I was building a fund for moments like this gameweek where I plan to bring in Fabregas. Yes, I play this game for fun.

Anyone else find it annoying Kompany is listed as a midfielder when he's a nailed on centre back for City and performing like one of the best players in the league at the moment?

My list of centre backs I believe are better than JT (there are more I personal believe are better but il try to get a consensus 99% of us can agree on )
Hopefully this list will flash to peoples minds the next time he wins a header against SEB and is declared World class (Dont mention the germany game btw as for sky it never existed)

In England : King (When fit) Rio, Kompany, Toure, Dunne, Vidic
Italy : Lucio, Nesta, Thiago Silva, Chellini,Mexes,
        Spain : Pique, Puyol, Carvalho,
        France: Mamadou Sakho
        Germany: Metersacher
        Usa: Marquez

That puts him down in 18th.

Next up the Gerrard list 😉

Its Fifa and Uefa who both wanted women to play in mini skirts and havent paid T&T for World cup 2006 so far.

I think it takes away from your arguement 😉

The fact he plays for 2 of the most recognised football brands in the worlds gives him a huge profile.

Once again the club he played for gains him attention rather than his performances

Carvalho was much the better player in that period.
As for him making the team of the tournament in 2008 (lol). England didnt exactly have to face Brazil etc.

Until you take Dunne off this list I'm not going to take you seriously. And aside from the odd decent game, Toure is nothing compared to the defender he was for Arsenal.

This is so f*cked up anyway. How can you profess to be an expert on each of these leagues, and know exactly how good Mamamdou Sakho is?

I'm going to look at the new football manager game and see how many defenders have better stats for tackling, marking, heading, positioning and concentration and then compile my own list. I'm actually not going to do that, but it would be just as f*cked up as your silly list.

I completely understand that you think that Terry is overrated, and have no problem (I even partially agree) with it, but you must know that this is a ridiculous thing to come up with. Surely?!

I need some bookmark reference to spring out the next time Cech or whoever makes a load of saves etc and Terry gets aload of praise.

I dont professe to be an expert on these leagues but I do watch alot of them on a regular basis and have seen enough of the players to make a sensible call.

Btw how do you Not know who Mammamdou Sakhour is? He was I think the youngest club captain in Europe and has been immense in what I have seen in the French league and Europe .

I actually believe everyone of them are better than him but the lack of exposure is a massive issue.

Of course I know who Mamadou Sakho is, but I would never claim to know exactly how good he is... Nor would I include him in some retarded list about who I think is better than John Terry.

Your argument for Terry being overrated is based on a couple of errors vs Everton and Hull (or someone like that). How do you know that Sakho hasn't been at fault for PSG conceding against the likes of Sochaux and Lorient?

Why do you assume its just based on a few errors last year.

Its based on watching him for 10 years and seeing in a large proportion of games him being taking the cleaners by a host of forwards.

Most games this is passed by Motd and the like as Carv, Cole etc have covered him and prevented the mistakes actually resulting in goals.

I think he is so lucky to have had the career he has had based on his ability to do his main job and defend.

He's been partially at fault for what, one goal this season so far?

I guarantee that if you pick any other defender in the league you can blame at least one goal on them if you really want to.

This isnt based on this year or one game or a slip which results in a goal.

Its based on his entire career. AS i said not all the mistakes results in a direct goal. If he were Welsh we would have heard very little about the lad.

                    eg Collins.

Hi guys. Where you should I invest?

        Options,
Jerome - odem and keep two cheap strikers on rotation. Then invest in rest of team. Bale - Vdv / maybe vidic ect

        Or,
Should I invest more into Attack. Maybe Anela or RVP. If I remove jerome jhabejuat over 10 mil....

        Oppinion welcome!

Guess I'm asking more long term. 2 cheap and 1 10mil+ striker. Or 2 x 9 mill+ strikers. Obviously with two cheap strikers I get to add vidic for dann and vdv for bale ( barring the unexpected) o er the next few GWs. I wouldn't take hits.

To add to Wenger's woes, it turned out Samir Nasri's substitution wasn't a tactical one:

"Samir has a calf problem we will assess tomorrow, we think it's small."
