A five-one battering at the home of your bitter rivals is never something to be positive about, but a 39th minute tactical re-think that day at St James’ Park may ironically prove beneficial to Steve Bruce’s Sunderland in the long-term.

Having favoured a 4-5-1 formation since the start of the season, Bruce hauled off out-of-position favourite Elmohamady and replaced the Egyptian with record-signing Asamoah Gyan, resultantly changing his side’s formation to a 4-4-2 to counter a rampant Newcastle. Since then, Gyan has never looked back.

With Darren Bent succumbing to a hamstring injury, Gyan has taken on the mantle as senior member of a Sunderland strike-pairing that sees him joined up-front by on-loan Man United youngster Danny Welbeck, and since that Tyne-Wear derby, his performances have been sensational. The subsequent three games have seen the Ghanaian as the in-form forward in the Premier League, bagging 4 goals and picking up 5 Bonus Points, a fantastic return of 27 points from his only league starts to date. Even Bent’s imminent return to action will surely do little to limit Gyan’s minutes now, with Welbeck the one briefly benched for the first half at White Hart Lane instead of the £13m signing from Rennes as Bruce began with a 4-5-1 before reverting to two up front for the second forty-five.

Sunderland have a great set of fixtures up next, which reads (EVE, wol, WHM, ful, BOL) and are currently on a run of form which sees them with just one defeat in their last eleven games. In addition, they are unbeaten at home all season, despite facing Arsenal, Man City and Man United at the Stadium of Light.

As the first team to score at Stamford Bridge in the league this season, Sunderland will, undoubtedly, be brimming with confidence coming into the weekend and Asamoah Gyan, priced at £7.2m in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and owned by a mere 2.5% of managers, has already shown the league leaders he has the pace, power and precise finishing to put any team to the sword.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

It's a bit unfair playing Henderson and Gibbs who are no where near ready. Jagielka is rubbish at right back and Lescott is rubbish at Centre Back, surely they can swap. The next thing that needs to happen is the wide men need to tuck in, we need to crowd then out.
Gareth Barry, what has happened to his career, he was a good player at Villa. Gerrard as usual trying to force low percentage passes.
The only good thing is Andy Carroll.

He wasn't a good player at Villa, and nor was Milner....

Barry and Henderson are doing absolutely nothing to stop Nasri dictating the game. He's made so many runs off the back of them that have gone completely untracked. Gibbs started poorly, but most of the French play has come down the left and Jagielka is no right back.

The only reason Carroll is the one good thing is because we bloody hoof it up to him every time we manage to get on the ball!

          Its all really subjective though.

What is good? Milner wasnt playing Xavi last year.
And remember he was part of the Villa side that got thumped by 7 at stamford bridge and got a lesson by Arsenal in passing.

He is competent ,average at best. Trouble is International football is more Xavi than Steve Sidwell.

Ridiculous, he scored 12 in 49 last season in centre midfield for an average Villa side almost single-handedly at times taking them to Wembley twice.

Hasn't got going at City, like Barry. There are reasons for this, signing for a team of individuals generally doesn't help matters.

He's a different player to Xavi, Iniesta etc.. and we'd all love one of those but he was effective last season.

How many were penalties and how many were against cannon fodder like Wolves, Bolton, Hull, Pompey last year?

Besides why shouldnt we compare him to Iniesta when they play the same position.....

He hasnt got goin at city cos he is out of his comfort zone. Strange how the likes of Tevez, Kompany , Hart have all played well in this team of individuals.

I'm not sure how playing for Man City who are in the Europa League - as were Villa, and competing for the top 4 - as were Villa for much of last season, is suddenly playing out of his comfort zone.

We can compare him to Iniesta - he isn't as good. All I was questioning were the comments; 'He wasn't a good player at Villa' and 'average at best', I disagree with both, stated my claim, let's move on.

Come on what. Both of them were good players, Milner still is. Barry was the driving force behind Villa becoming a top 6 side.
