A five-one battering at the home of your bitter rivals is never something to be positive about, but a 39th minute tactical re-think that day at St James’ Park may ironically prove beneficial to Steve Bruce’s Sunderland in the long-term.

Having favoured a 4-5-1 formation since the start of the season, Bruce hauled off out-of-position favourite Elmohamady and replaced the Egyptian with record-signing Asamoah Gyan, resultantly changing his side’s formation to a 4-4-2 to counter a rampant Newcastle. Since then, Gyan has never looked back.

With Darren Bent succumbing to a hamstring injury, Gyan has taken on the mantle as senior member of a Sunderland strike-pairing that sees him joined up-front by on-loan Man United youngster Danny Welbeck, and since that Tyne-Wear derby, his performances have been sensational. The subsequent three games have seen the Ghanaian as the in-form forward in the Premier League, bagging 4 goals and picking up 5 Bonus Points, a fantastic return of 27 points from his only league starts to date. Even Bent’s imminent return to action will surely do little to limit Gyan’s minutes now, with Welbeck the one briefly benched for the first half at White Hart Lane instead of the £13m signing from Rennes as Bruce began with a 4-5-1 before reverting to two up front for the second forty-five.

Sunderland have a great set of fixtures up next, which reads (EVE, wol, WHM, ful, BOL) and are currently on a run of form which sees them with just one defeat in their last eleven games. In addition, they are unbeaten at home all season, despite facing Arsenal, Man City and Man United at the Stadium of Light.

As the first team to score at Stamford Bridge in the league this season, Sunderland will, undoubtedly, be brimming with confidence coming into the weekend and Asamoah Gyan, priced at £7.2m in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and owned by a mere 2.5% of managers, has already shown the league leaders he has the pace, power and precise finishing to put any team to the sword.

This is a complety different France team though.
They have changed so many things and are being rewarded.

Blanc probably wont even call back Evra at this rate. Capello would never do the same with Gerrard & Co.

Thing is France look like they are building for 2-4 years time and are willing to admit they were wrong before.

Hmmm i dont think you get the idea of "building".
France method of team building with such young players starting from scratch mean they will perform erratically.
Its all part of the process.

If they were beating everyone then it wouldnt be building.
Its all geared towards major tournaments.

Very much like 1994 + when they did exactly the same thing for 1998.

On 5Live lots of callers and pundits are of the opinion that England should follow what France have done.

I think they've forgotten that Domenech was in charge for about 3 very unsuccessful decades and the FA kept forgetting to sack him.

Whereas the English FA are happy to change the manager but each one they appoint continues to pick average players (and compound matters by playing some of them out of position).

I'm tempted to agree that it's time to start again. Terry, Lampard, Barry, Milner, Lescott, Ferdinand should not be picked again (I'm sure we could add a fair few names to that). Let's just bring up the U21's and get them all playing together at the highest level. Enough.

Bit of an over-reaction there JWF. Ferdinand is still the best English CB and with Terry the best combo. Shame that King is always injured. Milner is still a good player, but he needs a move away from that poisoned chalice club.

Yes because away from City he will be able to control and pass the ball.

He is a poor Byran Robson trying to play on the wing who cant score goals or lead a team. And its not 1985 anymore.

Milner's not a winger though.. I know that he started his career on the wing, but the best football he's ever played was in the middle of midfield for Villa last year.

And he's certainly not a left winger. He's too slow, and isn't nearly skilful/clever enough to make a significant impact cutting in from the right.

But he works reasonably hard so people like/rate him.

It can't be an over-reaction if we've been playing this poorly for years. It really has been years. Strangely perhaps, of the names I mentioned above Ferdinand and Terry are the two I stand by the most. We do actually have some reasonably decent young CB alternatives so let's give them a go. England really can't get much worse.

I'm not pretending that the players waiting to come through are ready yet but the point is they may as well play for the first team now and learn to compete against the best (not that the French are the best by any stretch) as the current first-team players have been putting in piss poor performances for too long.

I'd rather loose blooding youngsters than with the current 'cream of the crop'.

I remember when Sven was in charge, doing his dozen substitutions at halftime business, and the reason that came out (and I don't know why more wasn't made of it) was that the sponsors demanded England to always play their 'strongest team'. Presumably this was the sponsors' idea of the strongest team, so Lampard, Gerrard, etc always started, even when everyone knew there was no point. It was only the second half he could experiment.

So changing the manager won't do anything as he will continue to pick the same players, but maybe it's not entirely his fault.

Ya, w/France it was obvious that Domenech was garbage and needed to go long ago, it was only a matter of time for the implosion. The only reason why there was no need to before, was because of a player called Zidane. After he left, they had no chance under their system and needed the revolution. The English FA needs to admit their mistake, cut their losses and rebuild the squad/system from the ground up, otherwise they should just considering withdrawing from the Euros and save themselves the embarrassment.

midfield: Nani, Fabregas, Malouda, VDV, Brunt

    Forwards: Drogba, Carroll, Elmander

looking ahead last week i thought Id have to choose between benching brunt (lowest in value and probably form as well) or carroll (who a couple days ago was thought to be an injury concern but apparrently not now), Im wondering if I need to do what I never imagined doing….benching malouda. Does anyone see this as wise? Im not quite ready to get rid.

it was already in. nani shouldn't have headed it obviously but i reckon it was already over the line. not sure about the rule but unless intending to touch it is enough i would have given that goal still

And you guys can tell from that clip? No way!

How can you say that AP, it was the most stupid thing I've ever seen. Why take the risk if the ball is going in anyway?

I know you feel a need to defend your United boys but that is just crazy

I think I might be able to spot the mistake Nani made.

Ronaldo's tantrums are legendary, but he deserved every flail of this one.

I like the way the other Portugese players rush over to Nani to reassure him he did nothing wrong!

This week I've got to bench one of...
Malouda, VDV, Nani(c), Fabregas, Jarvis, Drogba, Elmander, Carroll

    Any suggestions which one?

I would say Jarvis or Drogba if your feeling brave.

Drogba is my first choice to bench at the mo - not scoring much and playing away to Birmingham, but so loathe to bench that much money!!

And, Jarvis could do well this week with easy fixtures coming up....I'll be uhmming and ahhing until 11:30 Saturday I think 🙂
