Earlier in the season Dimitar Berbatov almost prompted me into using my precious Wildcard. A sublime hat-trick at home to Liverpool sent the pulse racing and the urge to tinker seemed overwhelming. The Bulgarian looked irresistible and, having been handed a modest price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, almost essential.

Thoughts gathered, I managed to keep the knee from jerking and my Wildcard remained intact. I spent the Gameweeks that followed thanking my lucky stars that I’d resisted as Berbatov, without the influence of Wayne Rooney alongside him, struggled to recall similar form. He proved to be anything but essential.

Today, the day I actually did throw my FPL Wildcard into the ring, the Berbatov bomb exploded once more. Five goals in a 7-1 mauling of Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford will grab the headlines on day when the Premier League went off the rails – 36 goals in total – not a clean sheet in sight. Madness…

Such insanity can be problematic for Fantasy Managers. The irony of such an avalanche of goals and such an individual performance on the day I play my Wildcard is not lost on me. In many ways I’m relieved; my tinkering itch has been well and truly scratched in the last 24 hours – the urge for more squad surgery is exhausted.

For others, probably thousands of others, Berbatov’s incredible performance and record FPL points haul will doubtless lead to one of the biggest bandwagons in memory. Tonight the scalpels will be out, hurried calculations will be made, points hits considered, more sleep lost. Berbatov has once again caused a big stir in our community. Not bad for a player who is often accused of failing to break sweat on the pitch.

And no, I didn’t sign Berbatov with my Wildcard but I’m happy enough regardless. My day and my Wildcard was anything but spectacular, but I’m content enough to opt out of the frenzy that Berbatov will cause and for that, I’m thankful.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    good morning vietnam.

    berbatovberbatovberbatovberbatovberbatovberbatovberbatovberbatov

there, got that out of my system. Heres my berbatov plan. dont buy. watch his price skyrocket. wait 9 weeks as he scores once. watch his price plummet. buy right before his next hattrick. captain him until he does. get rid.

    the perfect berbatov plan.

( I realize I have to include a disclaimer that this comment was tongue-in-cheek. No, its no the perfect berbatov plan, but thanks for considering telling me how/why that wouldnt work.)

Loved seeing berbs price drop overnight. I guess thats one example where fantasy truly doesnt mirror reality. Imagine netting five goals and taking a pay cut later that evening.

Strauss and Cook take a bow.

Draw looking very likely now, but a couple of early wickets and we could see a collapse and an easy Aussie run chase.

    Hey lads,

Living in Brisbane (originally from UK) and been to all 4 days at the GABBA so far. Nice to see us thumping those boneheads today!! Hehe.

Anyway, 'football freeends' (Inbetweeners), please suggest any potential changes to my team for upcoming fixtures. I was thinking of Kolarov replacing Coleman as I have 5.3 to spend.

    Foster, Jaask,

    Konchesky, Coleman, Bardsley, Jones, Dann

    Malouda, Nasri, VDV, Nzog, Nani

    Carroll, Piquionne, Drogba.

    Thanks in advance.

PS, If my bro reads this.... you're a little pubehead.

Your strikeforce would be my first worry.

      Piquionne has to go.

--> Piquionne > Bent (Great fixtures), Torres, Rooney, Tevez

Doubled up on BIR in defence with bad fixtures? Monitor Colemans starting role, I'm keeping hold of him, he has been dropped to the bench before and could easily come straight back in.

--> Dann > Kolarov for me.

      Midfield is good.

Thanks man. Assuming Drogba starts scoring at some stage, I was thinking strikeforce looks ok. I think there is merit to having a strong midfield this season and playing 2 strikers only.

Thanks re, Dann. I may swap him for Kolarov instead of Coleman, who may indeed get back into the Everton team.

And I have only one Birmingham defender, unless you mean Foster.

In my opinion you should remove Coleman instead of Dann. Both have difficult fixtures with Everton facing Chelsea and Man City away in next 3. And at the moment Birmingham are more solid defensively than Everton. Plus Dann is sure shot starter while Coleman is not. I doubt Coleman starts more games given return of Rodwell and Anichebe and with Everton injuries clearing up.

It's 25-1 for a reason. Result was likely with the cracking pitch. Test cricket is great on Betfair. Backing then laying results or vice versa equals easy money if done right.

NUFC has released a statement in response to the stormage: “Staff at Newcastle United are doing everything they can today to ensure that despite the heavy snowfall, tomorrow’s Barclay’s Premier League game with Chelsea can go ahead as scheduled. Aside from the task of making the pitch area playable, health and safety concerns are being addressed too. The club is working closely with Newcastle City Council and extra staff have been brought in to help make public areas in and around the ground safe and accessible.”

      So, keep your hopes up.

You have 5 points to get if no game. Cole & Carroll can easily get that. Plenty would benefit from no game. I only have Drogba(c) in that game but my bench is pathetic & emergency captain is useless.

Berbs would be the ultimate knee jerk, not that it's a bad thing. Berbs always plays better with Rooney around. Against Blackpool it's a toss of a coin, but in the long term it's Rooney, being on pens and some free kicks and less of a rotation risk.

There was a phantom assist just as shocking last week. Varney heads the ball on to Harewood who slots home. FPL replied to tell me the ball came off Hahnemann's gloves not Varney's head, which was total nonsense.

I imagine FPL will probably give Zog the assist in the end, but anything is possible. These people are consistent in their infuriating inconsistency.

Givet got injured in his last game & possibly was given more time to recover. I have him too & hopefully he will get his place back.
      Chimbonda isn't up to it.

I think Givet wasn't 100% (at least I'm hoping) and hopefully after yesterdays performance he will regain his position. Chimbonda gave United at least one goal.

I saw the nzog controversy and I thought it quite clearly was touched away by the defender and then deflected off the other defender into Cleverly's path. That would not be an assist. I don't have charlie but nobody else in my leagues really have him either. I don't know I thought it was pretty clear cut.

Seriously, it wasn't touched away by the defender - it looks like it was from the main camera angle but when they show it from a camera behind the goal it was clearly poked away by N'Zog.
