Jamie Carragher’s 450th Premier League appearance was definitely one to forget last Sunday, with the centre-half suffering a dislocated shoulder in the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham. His replacement Sotirios Kyrgiakos may have been on the end of a rollicking from Carragher for being slow to get warmed up to replace him, but with the Liverpool vice-captain now reportedly sidelined for up to three months and a long-lasting calf injury still keeping Daniel Agger out of the running, you can be sure that the big Greek will be ready and raring to go in this unexpectedly prolonged run at the heart of Roy Hodgson’s defence.

It is the Reds favourable upcoming fixtures (AVL, new, FUL, blp, WOL, BOL) that make Kyrgiakos such a particularly alluring prospect. After a torrid start to the season Liverpool have finally -albeit at a stuttering rate- started to climb the Premier League table and Hodgson must surely see a promising pre-2011 run as the perfect opportunity to get their season back on course and draw a line through what has been a problematic year for the Anfield men.

At a colossal 6ft 4in, Kyrgiakos is always an aerial threat and has scored two goals in just six games so far this season, finding the net in both his Anfield league appearances. With the club still awaiting Fernando Torres’ bravura performance, Joe Cole having a frustrating period with form and niggling injuries and Steven Gerrard temporarily sidelined, they will rely on the lofty Greek to be a menace in the box at every given set piece.

Priced at just £5.1 million on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Kyrgiakos could be the ideal bargain defender to allow you to spend your budget on a big money move in midfield or attack. Also something of a Bonus Points magnet, he’s been awarded the maximum three points on two out of his five full appearances, which -considering the current lack of clean sheets knocking about- perhaps gives him the nod over similarly-priced team mates Paul Konchesky and Martin Skrtel for anyone considering Liverpool defensive cover.

His Fantasy ownership, a mere 1.1%, only adds to Kyrgiakos’ appeal, suggesting he could well just turn out to be the perfect “differential” over the next few Gameweeks as the season heats up for the Christmas period.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Same, it's not half as bad as that weekend when most of the games were called off last season. Over the next couple of months it's meant to be worse though so expect lots of postponents and lots of DGWs. 😀

Try http://www.metcheck.com/ - A League 2 groundsman put me on to this site - apparently it's the one that the majority of groundsmen use. Gives you an hour-by-hour forecast for the next week or so for your chosen location/postcode.

The other thing is that the scan was on Tuesday but the results have not been released. Makes me wonder if it was better than feared and they want to keep the element of surprise?

Englands bid looks stronger by the hour. Fingers and toes crossed. Anyone else get the feeling that when Fabregas was bigging up the Spnish/Portugese bid he was actually talking about Barcelona?
Russia should not even be in anyones thoughts, purely because they have a problem with racism that they cannot (and probably don't care to) control.

Our bid could be stronger than Chuck Norris, we haven't given and 50k handshakes to the voting comittee, so we won't win.

After seeing that Panorama programme and what they said FIFA's demands were to the governments, I'm not sure if I want the World Cup to be held here. I would happily go to Spain or Holland to watch some of those games. the latter wouldn't be a whole lot harder than going up to, say, Sunderland.

agree about russia. for me it has to be england, no better place for football and they're fully equipped and can use the stadium improvements. plus, after the olympics they'll be set. everyone including myself would love to travel to the birthplace of football for a world cup. it's been 44 years, far too long.

Im debating the fact that Eng should get it based on fan base and history, Which Holland can also point to and who havent had it before.

And Russia is a massive footie nation too. Im all for spreading the game the places it hasnt been before.

                      Yes.

Not that it has anyting to do with what we are debating.

I guess 2mor when they all "vote" the central question will be

Can we give the world cup to Holland ? ...."well have they lived in England" No

                      Ok they are out....etc.

                      Its England on that basis.

it would be holland/belgium- the joint country thing is the only drawback for me, but holland would be great no doubt. no way i'd put russia before england, holland or australia- russia is last place imo. largely due to the racism thing, but also because it's so big and spread out making travel more costly and difficult between the cities. it's also very very expensive, more so than england because of their inflation rate.

Russia isnt expensive and I speak from experience.

The travel would be an issue but thats sorted when they put in the bullet train.

And remember its FIFA who decides so anything to do with racism etc wont be a factor for them. Which is of course a large issue in Russia. But its an issue elsewhere also.

Anyway Id support Holland, Australia and then Russia. If England wasnt hosting the Olympics and didnt host a tournament only 14 years ago then my opinion would be different.

Racism in Russia is a non issue, it didn't stop UEFA awarded the Euros to Ukraine/Poland. Also DB's argument against having the Olympics and World cup close together hasn't stopped Brazil getting both over a shorter time frame. Finally Holland/Belgium have hosted a major competition, the Euros, more recently than England.
It's about who would host the best World Cup. Giving it to Russia, would mean it has everything to do with money and corruption. The infrastructure there is terrible.

You're right there. couldn't give a toss about olympics though. when we were bidding for wc 2006 i knew we wouldn't get it cos it wasn't enough time since euro 96. 22 years should be a fair enough gap i reckon.

Power corrupts and corrupt people seek power.

I dont see why Australia. Russia etc shouldnt be given ago.

Even Holland who have a massive history and fan base deserve it more.

If we don't get it i'd be a massive advocate for holland, didn't they host a euro's not too long ago with belgium? that will probably count against them.

FIFA overall don't wanna be seen to be favouring any countries, so they can be as corrupt as possible without anyone getting angry enough to investigate them and make millions on the sly!

I think the USA shouldnt be able to hold 2022 either as they had it in 1994, 6 world cups apart, which wasnt all that long ago!
              However Qatar is a joke!

USA shouldn't be able to bid at all. It's just too damn big. Not practical for a major sporting event.

                I agree about Usa.

If you dont give new countries a go then football will never evolve.

Having it in SA this year was excellent. Football will grow massively in Africa now.

Qatar is not a joke for wanting to hold it. Should the ability to hold it be based on ability .

Cos if it is then the same countries will always have it.

There has to be some rational for hosting a world cup.
For me a major one is if a large country with a huge fanbase hasnt hosted it before then it should be allowed to be given a go.

And by deserve it I mean say for example Holland who have a huge History should be given a go. They have a big fanbase, facilities and arent also hosting the olympics.

As I said below I think the WC should be spread around where it hasnt been before.

I don't know why every country should be given a go.

Why give it to Qatar when they still enforce Shariah law? If a country has civil rights issues, or other such problems, including Russia problems with Chechnya, why should they have it?

i live in the u.s. and honestly would rather it be somewhere like holland or australia instead. it's too commercialized b.s. and so spread out and big like russia making traveling for those outside of the u.s. difficult and expensive. plus, most of the culture here is spread out between the other major sports and can care less about the football culture, let alone fully embrace it. the only city i've been to in the u.s. that truly loves and appreciates football as a whole is new york.

Am I mad? Unless Dann gets hurt tonight, my transfer this week will not be getting rid of coleman, or drogba. Instead im dropping VDV, for another injured player. Insane right. Im making 3 moves in the next two weeks:

      VDV out, Gerrard in

      then Drogba/Coleman out, Rooney/Kolarov in

im losing .1 if i dont do the vdv/gerrard swap tonight. Im gambling on postponements either being 1 (BPL for which i only have 1 player) or virtually all, which means we are all screwed together anyways, so phuck it, Im rolling the dice. Team would look like this:

      Robinson

      Cole, Kolarov, Konchesky, Dann, Simpson

      Gerrard, Malouda, Nani, Cahill, Brunt

Rooney, Elmander, Carroll .1 left in bank, 106.5ish in the team

      thoughts? prayers?

Protection comes in when the [i] flag gets removed. VDV was flagged yellow last week, the flag came off on the 28th and his protection 'may' have started then. He then got injured on the 29th and his flag went red. So it's not because of the injury that protection is applied - it's because he apparently got better on the 28th.

Once protection is applied it stays for 8 days (estimate) - regardless of whether he gets injured in that time. The only time he becomes 'unprotected' is when the 8 days are up.

It's a bit of a grey area as the latest estimate on FISO is that a player has to be yellow or red flagged for 2 days for them to be eligible for protection - and VDV was yellow flagged on the 26th and it was removed on the 28th - so I have no idea whether he is protected or not. I would advise all those who have him and will be affected by a 0.1 drop to sell him tonight as there is a more than even chance that he's not protected.

If this is the case then his price may not drop very much at all, because most of the people selling him will do so this weekend. Once the protection is removed all those sales will be taken into account (including those made already) but he will only drop 0.1 and then the "clock will be reset". Someone please tell me if this is a load of rubbish!

I don't get the whole protected thing either - got stung by Tevez and Nani rises recently whilst allegedly protected - TM has it right when he says ignore protection if you really want a player and 0.1 isn't critical (or he says something like that, anyway)

Im virtually certain he will drop tonight because the protection was for the previous knock and he wound up featuring anyway. Since he didnt miss a game, i dont feel the protection is vaild, he will most definitely be protected after this red flag injury is removed weeks from now, but if you want to make a move and it hinges on whether VDV may or may not drop, id say be prepared for the drop.

I'm no expert but my 2 penneth =

VDV got to go (for Nasri or Pedersen)
Boateng - might well play so not a priority to tinker with
Adam - will def play so long as game is on so other transfers more urgent
Alex - need to get rid asap - Kolorov?
Coleman - would get rid but not a priority now
Drogba - agree but will play so not an urgent transfer out

Key is to keep an eye on weather for GW and make sure you have 11 playing (by taking as few hits as poss)

Just my thoughts, anyway - hope this helps

Need to get rid of VDV, and possibly Fabregas. I guess I'm in the same boat as a lot of people on here.

I'm thinking one of five options this week:

      1) VDV and Fab ---> Bale and Lampard (or Malouda)
      2) VDV and Fab ---> Nasri and Malouda
      3) VDV and Fab ---> Bale and Nasri
      4) VDV ---> Nasri only
      5) VDV ---> Bale only

Any thoughts? I realise people have been debating who to replace VDV (and maybe Fab) all week. What are you doing?
