Arsenal’s emphatic 3-1 victory over Chelsea back in Gameweek 19 seems to have provided a psychological shot in the arm to a team searching for their first piece of silverware in five years. After stylishly sweeping aside the reigning Premier League Champions, the Gunners have since bossed matches against Birmingham (a 3-0 victory) and Man City (a game they deserved to win). They are now within 4 points of leaders Manchester United and seem to be the biggest rivals to Sir Alex’s men, given Chelsea’s torrid form and City’s inconsistency. The triumphant display against Chelsea also saw the return key players Cesc Fabregas and, namely, Robin Van Persie – who made his first start of the season.

This new found buoyancy and restoration of proven talent will give Arsene Wenger’s men a significant boost into the second half of the season and the foundations to tackle what, on paper, appears to be a kind run of fixtures (whm, WIG, EVE, new, WOL/STK, che) which includes an immensely attractive double Gameweek spent at the Emirates.

The return of highly influential Van Persie is a timely and one would expect him to be in amongst the goals and assists, in a run that could make or break Arsenal’s title hopes. Of course, Marouane Chamakh remains a factor having enjoyed an encouraging start to his career at the Emirates, and there is a possibility that one of the two strikers will be benched, with Wenger currently favouring a five-man midfield. But with the Frenchman opting for Van Persie in the crucial clashes with Chelsea and Manchester City, this seems a clear signal of his intent.

RVP hasn’t had the chance to prove his worth this season having only managed to scrape together a handful of Premier League appearances, but if previous seasons are anything to go by then the Dutch international will soon enough show his ability. The player is as much as a provider as he is a goalscorer, in the 2008/2009 season (one in which he managed to stay relatively injury free) he clocked up 11 goals and 10 assists, and his all round authority was not unnoticed as he collected 27 bonus points on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

A key component in Arsenal’s attacking ploys and a factor at set-plays, now could be the right time to transfer in Van Persie. With a current FPL ownership of just 3.5%, he could be a key “differential” and once he has hit some form, his value of £9.5 million will surely increase as swarms of Fantasy Managers take interest.

The caveat is of course the Dutchman’s history of injuries. Van Persie has suffered badly in previous seasons from a catalogue of setbacks – ankle, thigh, foot, hamstring and knee – Van Persie has suffered problems with them all. The 2008/09 season saw him start 24 league games – he’s never got close to bettering that total in this, his seventh year in the Premier League.

Although his valuation is high for a player who has a rickety injury record, many Fantasy Managers will have funds available in the bank as Carlos Tevez seems to be one of the only high-priced forwards displaying a degree of consistency. If you do opt for Van Persie though prepare to wince at every incoming tackle and make sure you’re stocking some bubble wrap for those glass legs.

Is it worth making a 4 point hit to transfer in Fabregas this week?

Well i can't see tevez being dropped for him, for any games, but he may play up top with tevez, which would mean a change in formation.

He won't be nailed on every week IMO

Cant decide if Tevez is worth bringing in this week.

Would likely mean benching him the week after if I bring in a MUN fwd.

Tevez is a frustrating player to own. He has it in him for a double digit gameweek, easily. Seems to score big in purple patches.

Not a believer in benching expensive players myself.

          Disagree.

This is a move they had to make. Gates down by 9000. You cant let that happen.

He alienated the fans after the Wolves game and undoubtedly had lost the dressing room too. Look at the way they've played at home and away recently. They couldn't give a toss.

Take a look at what John Henry did for a perennial underachieving Boston Red Sox team and then tell me that the owners don't have a clue!

He's a terrific manager but sometimes you go to a club and its just a bad fit.

Case in point is Ian Holloway. Terrible spell at Leicester City, gets them relegated, then goes to Blackpool and everything works out and he gets them into the prem.

Everyone who manages that club has too solve the problem of the elephant in the room - Gerrard. With luck, Liverpool will really suffer now, to reward them for their hubris - I certainly have lost all respect for the club.

I think he's in touch with LFC fans so you'll see that reflected in the team.

I reckon Agger will come in for Konchesky and Kyrg may get a look in too.

Skrtel is best player to invest in now, but LIV defence may be a genuine player again now in FFL terms.

it is official that Hodgson has gone.

Got to see now what happens with Konchesky. I get the feeling Agger will now be the LB.

They should be a much better team, at least for the last few weeks as I suspect they'll play for Dalglish. They clearly couldn't give a rats ass about playing or putting any effort in under Hodgson.

Kyrgiakos may also come into the reckoning again now. Could be exciting times.

Don't underestimate the power of a new manager, especally one that the fans will instantly get behind and the players evidently want to play for.

It could be a massive fail of course, but there is every possibility that, at least for the next few league games, this gives them a jolt in the arm.

And since when was listening to the fans (your customers in a busines sense) and acting on the feedback you recieved been a bad thing?

torres will probably be at a new club, by gw 24. it's one to keep an eye on anyway.

Also, will you be planning on using your wildcard, as you've planned for 1 or 2 transfers for each Gw, in the time that the wildcard expires. What's the point in that ?

Or have you already used your wildcard ?

    Need some advice.

Thinking about doing Cashley -> Hangeland and MGP -> Fabregas/N'zog this week, for a 4 point hit.
And next week Hahnemann -> Kingson/Stockdale?

    Cheers!

Good moves, Hahnemann to Begovic/Fabianski if you can afford either!

        Hm, maybe that.
But was thinking Kingson or Stockdale because of the DGW..

have kuyt and malouda in my midfield, also have vdv, adam and nani
was thinking of fabs for kuyt for gw23 and gerrard for malouda for the doubles in gw24, do ye think tho i should keep kuyt and have 7 dgw players instead of 6? it would mean not getting fabs til gw25 tho

    Hi everyone,
I am thinking of playing my wild card this week and these are my thoughts for the 'perfect' taking into consideration the upcoming gameweeks...your thoughts would be appreciated.

    Kingson Gordon
Evra Sagna Cole A Coleman Skrtel
    VDV Nani Brunt Nasri Adam
    Tevez Drogba/Van Persie Varney

    and for following gameweek (G24)
    Drogba/Van Persie out for Torres
    Tevez out for Rooney/Berbatov

Kolarov may or may not play either. And I think you've gotta have some Arsenal attacker in there somewhere really.

Malouda to Fabs is the likely option. Wildcard for GW24 is the question or just take a -4?

Well, I've played mine this week and got rid of a lot of dead wood (Krul, Konch, G. Johnson, Jara, Kolarov, Cleverley, etc.).

You can set your team up pretty nice for GW 24 right now. No need to go mental on the DGW players really, given Arsenal are home to Wigan & Everton are home to West Ham.

But if you could get away with a 4 point hit, I'd probably go for that in all honesty. You may want to WC come GW26 or 27.

Last two weeks my ranks have been 2.3M & 2M. It's been a horror few weeks TM! I jumped aboard the Liverpool players at the start of their "good run of fixtures". Didn't quite turn out that way. 🙂

🙂 Just seen this on another footy website, made me chuckle...

    Lawro, Lawro Nonsense
'Writes' Mark Lawrenson on the BBC in his FA Cup predictions: 'You just cannot back Liverpool away from home at the moment. In nearly all their games on the road this season they have just not been at the races and they do not seem to have any confidence at all. They looked a bit better going forward against Blackburn on Wednesday but their defence let them down badly.'

'You just cannot back Liverpool away from home at the moment', Lawro? Is that why you backed them to win 2-1 at Blackburn in midweek and indeed have tipped them to get at least a point in 10 out of their 11 Premier League games away from Anfield this season? Yes?

Other gems from Lawro this week include 'I think Houllier is doing an okay job' (five wins in 19 games) and 'Glanford Park is not an easy place to go' (they have the worst home record in the Football League and have not won there since August).

Keep up the good work, Lawro

    What a tit...

    Hodgson gone eh, shocker.

At least Kenny will get the best out of Poulson, Ngog, Lucas, Konchesky, Kyriagos, Babel, Shelvey, Maxi, Cole.

    Oh wait.....

Any Arsenal Fans out there. Kills me to say as a MU fan but think they will go on a run of tons of goals and pts. With Wildcard this week, I have Fabs already. Was thinking of Djourou as a cheap defender. Is he now definate starter or rotation material. Also is RVP or Chamak the likely starter

Not sure on Djourou. He's a certain starter until Vermaelen gets back, and could be rewarded with more starts if he keeps up his good form. Wenger's been talking him up a lot recently, so it's a very real possibility.

RVP will get the monopoly on games, but I can see rotation. Arsenal have a lot of matches in the next couple of months.
